Looking back, Geoff Banks of Devon, England can hardly even remember how he first started writing to his American friend, Celesta Byrne.
Geoff and Celesta were given each other’s names and addresses as part of a school pen pal program back in 1938. They’re both now 100 years old, and a lot has changed in the past 84 years: their age changed ;their appearance changed; but one thing has not—they still use the traditional way to contact.
“I honestly struggle to remember something, but I was talking to Celesta recently and I think it was something to do with an American school’s scheme,” Geoff said,” They matched us up with Americans for a pen pal relationship, and somehow I ended up with this letter from an American girl, and we’ve just kept corresponding (通信) ever since.”
Geoff and Celesta’s relationship never turned romantic, but they shared a lot over the decades. They kept up their correspondence through World War II, sending updates about their families, friends, and work. In 2002, they finally got a chance to meet in person during a trip to New York City. Two years later, they met up again, but ever since then they’ve gone back to pen and paper.
Recently, they’ve switched to digital forms of communication to stay in touch. Their children have helped them set up email accounts. “I’ve known this new thing called Zoom, I think, now to chat with her, but I leave all the technology to younger people. Deep down, I refuse to use Zoom. Writing to Celesta has been a source of great satisfaction for me over the years,” said Geoff.
Celesta says their relationship is “like people who live next door”. “You know how they’re doing, you say a few words, and then you both go to work,” she explained. “She’s always been there to write to, even if it was just birthday cards and Christmas cards.” Geoff added.
4. What do Geoff and Celesta insist on doing over the 80 years?
A. Sending cards. B. Writing to each other.
C. Enjoying telling jokes. D. Struggling to remember things.
5. What do Geoff Banks’ words in Paragraph 3tell us?
A. When they ran a scheme. B. Why they liked writing.
C. What they both liked to do. D. How they got in touch.
6. Which of the following can best describe the relationship between Geoff and Celesta?
A. stable and romantic. B. harmonious but short.
C. close and lasting. D. difficult but satisfying.
7. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a way to make friends.
B. To teach us skills of writing letters.
C. To tell us a tale of lifelong friends.
D. To stress the power of technology.

Last winter I enjoyed a brief adventure in Guatemala. Over a period of 12 days, I explored through the jungle to watch the sunrise and danced in the street during the holiday parade. But looking back on that trip, what I remember most vividly is a New Year’s Eve in Guatemala City, at a lifeless hotel. Rather than a countdown to midnight, I counted down the hours until my departure.
Nothing special happened during that night. Rather, the big role this hotel plays in my memories can be explained by a psychological principle called the recency effect. “The recency effect helps to account for our tendency to remember the ending part of a sequence of events with far more clarity than the rest, ” said Dr. Mary Poffenroth, a biopsychologist.
She says it arises from our short-term memory’s inability to hold on to more than a small amount of information at once. So while there is no magic formula to create lovely travel memories, employing the recency effect can turn a good trip into an unforgettable one.
Dr. Stephanie, a Neuroscientist, says that while you can strategically set off the recency effect at a trip’s end, you may have multiple opportunities to create lasting memories all along the way by breaking it up into smaller chunks.
Keep in mind that the recency effect can also backfire. “Ending an amazing trip with stressful flight delays, lost luggage or feeling unwell might be enough to overshadow the entire experience, resulting in remembering the trip as awful instead of joyful, ” Stephanie said.
To avoid disproportionately (不成比例地)spotlighting the final days, Poffenroth has created a trick: She amplifies (增强) earlier days in a trip to keep her memories well-rounded. “I collect little bits that will remind me of that day: a subway ticket, a seashell, a cardboard drink with a pub’ s logo on it. ” Then, as she is packing on the last day, “I go through all my little found treasures and spend a few moments recalling each one, ” she said. “This gives me a sense of closure for that chapter of travel and makes the experience memorable. ”
8 How did the author feel about the New Year’s Eve in Guatemala City?
A. It was boring. B. It was eventful.
C. It was relaxing. D. It was cheerful.
9. What do we know about the recency effect from paragraph 2?
A. It is based on a psychological principle.
B. It is widely used to create lovely memories.
C. It highlights the final part of a series of events.
D. It makes up for the inability of short-term memory.
10. What does the underlined word “backfire” mean in paragraph 5 ?
A. Be avoided to some extent. B. Be applied extensively.
C. Produce undesirable consequences. D. Pose unexpected challenges.
11. According to Poffenroth, which of the following may help travelers have good memories?
A. Share travel experiences. B. Recall the final days of a journey.
C. Purchase as many souvenirs as possible. D. Purposely gather reminders of a journey.
D
In March, 2023, a group of computer scientists published an assessment of a new chatbot with artificial intelligence (AI). The team’s report drew global attention to one test in particular: We have a book, nine eggs, a laptop, a bottle and a nail, and please tell me how to pile them onto each other in a stable manner. This is a tough puzzle. Earlier versions of the chatbot gave silly and unreasonable answers. But the new chatbot’s unique answer helped set off the current global wave of AI advocacy and anxiety. It fueled debate about how large language models (LLMs) were able to perform creative tasks.
By 2022, LLMs were being trained on as many as 17 trillion words of human-generated text, mainly from the Internet. It was certain that the new chatbot was exposed to functional fixedness (功能固着) problems in its training. The researchers were of course aware of that and invented the “eggs and laptop” puzzle to prevent the new chatbot from dishonestly copying an answer from the Internet. LLMs used language statistics only. No one had said how to pile these nine eggs on top of each other ever before. The extreme rarity of those words would tend to prevent LLMs from talking about piling eggs in unrealistic ways. One of the researchers that tested the new chatbot thinks it’s likely that an LLM trained on trillions of words creates a world model, and this is what gives it the “magical” extrapolation (外推) properties.
Are LLMs truly original or are they just plagiarists (剽窃者)? The two statements may not be as different as they seem. There’s nothing entirely new under the sun. Edison did not invent the light bulb but improved it. Most so-called creators apply knowledge from different fields to a problem and arrive at a solution. It’s more a matter of making relevant connections than of inventing something completely new. If LLMs are indeed acquiring the ability to make relevant connections, that would be a historic but discomforting development.
12. What do we know about the new chatbot’s answer to the puzzle in paragraph 1?
A. It was silly. B. It set people thinking.
C. It drew little attention. D. It highlighted language innovation.
13. Why did the researchers invent the “eggs and laptop” puzzle?
A. To copy online answers. B. To stop the chatbot cheating.
C. To train humans to use language. D. To expose the chatbot to functional problems.
14. What does the author convey in the last paragraph?
A. How an invention came into being. B. How Edison became successful in history.
C. Why Edison invented something entirely new. D. Why an invention required effort and opportunity.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Will Robots Replace Humans? B. Can Robots Develop Smoothly?
C. Can AI Come Up With Anything Original? D. Will AI Solve Magical And Difficult Problems?

My parents decided to drive me to the countryside for relaxation (放松) after a busy month. Then, on a Saturday morning, my dad started his car and we set off with great expectation.
Before long, we left the noisy city and came to the mountains. There were few vehicles on the road and the trees alongside were pretty. We felt so excited! As a few hours passed we drove onto a narrow road. And minutes later, we found a river not far away from the road. The beach was very wide, and we wanted to have a rest there for a while. So my dad turned our car and drove towards it. Soon, we were driving on the sandy beach. Our car wheels were struggling in the increasingly soft sand. But my dad wanted to get closer to the river.
Before he regretted it, our car had got stuck in the sand. My dad tried to turn around or move back but the car didn’t move. We were trapped in the middle of nowhere. What was worse, it began raining We got out of the car and tried to push it, but failed. We were tired and our hair and coats were a little wet. But the car only sank further into the sand.
Anxiously, we walked to the road, hoping to stop a vehicle for help. But after waiting for a long time, there wasn’t one vehicle passing. Just when we were helpless, we saw a farmhouse not far away. “Can they help us? I asked. My dad was doubtful. Still, we reached there, and found it was a big family. They seemed poor but friendly. My dad told them our problem and begged them to help us pull our car out.

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last Friday.
We were tasked to draw or paint something that impressed us most. Inspired by the fantastic scenery, I decided to create a watercolor painting of the small bridge over the park’s pond, surrounded by blooming flowers.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded by nature not only sparked my creativity but also offered a much-needed break from the usual hustle and bustle of school life. I felt a deep sense of peace as I painted.
In a word, it was not just an art class; it was a moment of connection with nature that I truly cherished.
Yours,

To our surprise, they nodded without thinking. They quickly found some ropes and tools. And they all, including a sixty-year-old man, two tall sons, their wives and several cheerful children, followed us. When reaching the beach, some of us pushed the car while others pulled it out with all strength. We tried hard, but the car didn’t move. Just then, my father saw that many faces of this family were covered with sweat, but they didn’t leave. Finally, after we tried many times, the car was pulled out of the sand.
My dad was so grateful that he handed some money to the family to thank them. However, they refused. Instead, they invited us to have a meal and offered to dry our coats. At their insistence, we returned to their home again, where the women went to prepare the meal while the men lit a big fire using firewood. The family offered us clean coats and hung our wet ones near the fire. We sat around the fire, and soon felt warm. Later, we enjoyed their delicious meal. That experience made me know that there are many helpful people who don’t expect anything in return.
