America's Best Towns to Visit
This summer,we're looking at cities where you'll find small-town tones and plenty to see and do
for a few days or more. Here are our four picks:

A small city best known over the years as an industrial, ore ()-shipping port on the Great
Lakes,Duluth is now gaining a reputation as a shelter from the climate crisis. Its summers are
typically quite mild thanks to its setting alongside Lake Superior. The hilly city offers a series of
lakeside attractions and a dynamic neighborhood showcasing handmade goods.
·0 bispo
If you're dreaming of a relaxed,old-fashioned California atmosphere, the expensive Bay Area
and traffic-heavy Obispo might not be the best choices. But there is a place that brings back the
laid-back feel of 20th-century Califoria. Here, you can enjoy activities like wine tasting and hiking
without large crowds. The beautiful natural surroundings, with the Pacific Ocean nearby, are the
perfect finishing touch.

The Rift House primary school in Hartlepool gives all its children free breakfasts,PE kits and

更
charitable project led by another local head, which was launched last week and aims to deliver
10,000 new beds to children in the Tees Valley in the next three years.

则
Mark Tilling, head of a secondary school in Hartlepool, has worked with local businesses and run
fund-raising events to raise f70,000 to get the Tees Valley project off the ground. He has partnered
自
with Zarach,a local charity, which has given thousands of beds to poor children. The fact that this is
needed at all makes Tilling angry."In the 21st century,we shouldn't be talking about kids without
food or beds,"he said."How do we get good results for children in school if they don't have beds to
sleep in?"
In the Tees Valley project, schools will refer families that they know are in need of a bed for their
kids.A lot of those they will be helping here are the working poor, who aren't on benefits and don't
have any services supporting them. Each new bed the charity gives out, designed to last the child for
eight years, also comes with a duvet ()bedding,new nightclothes and toiletries.McGrath, the
project leader, explained,"Some parents don't have a washing machine to wash bedding,or they may

Climate change is increasingly challenging the world of sports, with rising temperatures and
extreme weather conditions threatening the existence of sports events globally.Athletes like triathlete
Pragnya Mohan have been forced to relocate their training to cope with unbearable heat, while others,
including discus thrower Sam Mattis, face extreme temperatures during competitions.Such
conditions not only affect athlete performance but also pose a threat to the continued existence of
certain sports.
At the UN climate summit in Baku, experts underlined the urgent need to address climate
change's impact on sports.Events are being interrupted by unusual weather patterns,as seen in the
Paris Olympics, where triathlons were delayed due to water quality issues from heavy rain.In
response, some sports organizations and clubs are beginning to take action.Soccer clubs have joined
forces to reduce emissions and engage fans in climate awareness, emphasizing the role sports can
play in advocating environmental responsibility. These efforts illustrate the crucial role that organized
sports can have in promoting and supporting sustainable practices.
新课标卷英语第5页(共12页)
However,large-scale efforts can sometimes seem less impactful due to conflicting priorities and
the financial interests tied to major sports events. These factors hinder real progress in sports-related
climate advocacy and reveal the complexities involved in combining global sports practices with
environmental initiatives.
Climate change is also increasing the costs associated with sports, widening the gap between rich
and less rich athletes. As certain regions become unsuitable for training due to weather extremes,
athletes face increased travel and training expenses, creating a widening socioeconomic divide. To
adapt, sports events are shifting to cooler times or new locations. However, these measures only
partially address the broader issues.Technologies like air-conditioned stadiums, used in the Qatar
World Cup,provide temporary relief but are not sustainable.
As sports wrestle with climate change, athletes and organizations must innovate to reduce their
environmental footprint.A joint effort is essential to make sure sports can continue to boom in a
changing world, offering fair opportunities while promoting sustainability, with an emphasis on
long-term,impactful solutions.
28.Why are Pragnya Mohan and Sam Mattis mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To demonstrate physical challenges world athletes face.
B.To praise their achievement in reducing climate change.
C.To display their excellent performance in competitions.
D.To show the bad effects climate change has on sports.
29.What does the underlined word"hinder"mean?
A.Discover.
B.Achieve.
C.Deny.
D.Block.
30.What might be the impact of climate change on sports?
A.It narrows the skill gap between athletes.
B.It raises the training costs for sports events.
C.It promotes equality among sports participants.
D.It increases the number of international events
31.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A.Innovative technology is key in sports competitions.
B.Cooperation is needed to ensure the sports'survival.
C.Organizations should offer athletes fair opportunities.
D.The solutions made now are short-term and low-impact.

Future astronauts could enjoy a nutritionally perfect diet made from bacteria ()brought up
on broken pieces of asteroids(小行星),to produce a kind of milkshake..
新课标卷英语第6页(共12页)
琴国扫调全能王
While astronauts on the International Space Station have experimented with growing salad leaves,
the vast majority of food consumed in space is transported from Earth. This would be impossible for
more distant,longer-lasting missions,so Pearce,a scientist, decided to try using bacteria to change
carbon-containing compounds(复合物))from asteroids into eatable food..
They have yet to carry out this process using real asteroids, but Pearce and his team have
performed similar experiments using bacteria to break down plastic from leftover army supplies. To
do this, they heated the plastic in the absence of oxygen, and then fed this to a mixture of bacteria
that eat carbon.
The collective bacteria end up looking"something like a brown milkshake",says Pearce. While
that might not sound too appetizing, the bacteria are remarkably well-suited for human needs."We
did a nutritional analysis and it turned out to be almost a perfect food,"he says.
If the idea is sound,a 500-metre-wide asteroid similar to Bennu, which NASA visited in 2020,
could feed between 600 and 17,000 astronauts for a year. The exact number would depend on how
efficiently the bacteria can digest the asteroid's carbon compounds.
A fully operational asteroid food project will require an"industrial-sized super machine"in space,
but the researchers hope to test the idea on a smaller scale in the coming year, starting off with coal
and then moving to space rocks that have fallen to Earth, which they are currently working on a
proposal for.
"There is definitely potential there, but it is still a very futuristic and exploratory idea,"says
Professor Annemiek."It is good to think about these things, but in terms of technique, there is still
quite some development necessary before these methods can be used."
32.What can we learn from the experiment?
A.It has already been conducted on real asteroids.
B.The final product is unappealing but nutritious.
C.The plastic is heated in the presence of oxygen.
D.The bacteria can be used to make novel plastic.
33.What do the numbers listed in Paragraph 5 indicate?
A.The experiment is practicable.
B.The size of Bennu is big enough.
C.The new idea is of great potential.
D.The bacteria have some limitations.
34.What is Annemiek's attitude towards the idea?
A.Ambiguous.
B.Disapproving.
C.Objective.
D.Satisfied.

We all have down days, but a long-term lack of motivation can impact your mental health.
Break out of the blahs (with these four tips to help you get motivated.
Find your why to stay motivated. It's easier to stay motivated when you know why you're doing
something.Ask yourself what your reason is for wanting to accomplish this goal.36 Whatever it
is,connecting with your"why"gives you a deeper sense of purpose and helps you stay focused
when things get tough.
37 If you're working in a dark or noisy space,it can be hard to focus and get things done.
Sometimes,a change of scenery is all you need to spark (some motivation.Even small
changes can help you feel more energized. The people you surround yourself with can also have a
big impact on your motivation. If you're feeling low, talking to someone who supports and
encourages you can help lift your spirits.38
Break down large goals to stay motivated.A big project or goal can feel depressing. If you look
at everything you need to do and think,"Where do I even start?",that's usually when motivation
disappears.39 The trick is to break things down into smaller and more manageable pieces.
Instead of focusing on the entire project, take one small step at a time.
Focus on progress, not perfection. One of the biggest motivation killers is the pressure to be
perfect. When you expect everything to go just right,it's easy to get discouraged if they don't go as
planned.Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on making progress.40 Remember that
everyone makes mistakes or faces setbacks. What matters is progress. So don't be too hard on
yourself when things don't go exactly as expected.
线
A.Create a supportive environment.
B.Visualize the benefits of good habits
C.People often say practice makes perfect.
D.Trying to tackle it all at once can make you feel stuck.
E.Even small steps forward are better than standing still.
F.Maybe it's to advance your career or learn a useful skill.
G.In contrast, being around negative influences can empty your motivation.
