What would other kids say when they found out my parents can’t hear? And I wanted Evelyn to visit my house one day, then she'd see how different my house was. My parents use a video phone so they can use sign language to communicate with callers. We also have a light on the wall that flashes when the phone or doorbell rings, and our TV is always set to show the captions (字幕). Would Evelyn think my house is strange? When darkness fell, Dad drove us to the brightly lit school, which looked different at night. It felt different, too, as we walked down the hallway to my classroom. We stopped in front of the notice board in the hall. “Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud. She does that when she's excited, because she can’t hear herself. Some older kids turned to stare at us in surprise and I wanted to hide. Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced my teacher to my family and explained that my parents are deaf. “It’s nice to meet you.” Mom said, signing. Some of my classmates were watching us and whispering. Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom standing by the door. “Hi, Amy,” Evelyn said suddenly. I turned around, “Hi.” “I didn’t know your parents are deaf,” she said. “Yeah.” I couldn’t think of anything else to say. “And you can talk to them with your hands? That's so cool!” “You think so?” I asked, feeling relieved Evelyn nodded. “It’s like a secret code. Would you teach me some words sometime?” I smiled. “Of course.” Then I got my parents’ attention. “Mom, Dad,” I said, signing, “I’d like you to meet my friend Evelyn and her mom.” 24.How did Amy feel about her first Open House at the beginning? A.Worried. B.Surprised. C.Excited. D.Strange. 25.Amy’s house is different because ________. A.there is no doorbell on their door B.the TV is always set to show the captions C.her parents use video phones to talk with each other D.there is a light on the wall to make the house brighter 26.Amy felt relieved at last because ________. A.her classmates said hello to her family B.her mother was very happy to see her picture C.her friend thought it cool to use sign language D.her teacher walked over and talked to her family 【答案】24.A 25.B 26.C 【导语】本文主要讲述作者因为父母是聋人而感到羞愧自卑,但因受到好朋友的影响从而改变了心态的故事。 24. 根据“but I was worried”可知,一开始有点担心,故选A。 25. 根据“And I wanted Evelyn to visit my house one day, then she'd see how different my house was...and our TV is always set to show the captions (字幕)”可知,艾米的房子是不同的,因为电视总是设置为显示字幕。故选B。 26. 根据“And you can talk to them with your hands? That's so cool!”和“‘You think so?’ I asked, feeling relieved (如释重负).”可知,艾米终于松了一口气,因为她的朋友认为用手语很酷。故选C。 C We rely on our memory for sharing stories with friends or learning from our past experiences. Yet evidence shows that our memory isn’t as consistent as we’d like to believe. There are countless reasons why tiny mistakes might happen each time we recall past events. And whenever these mistakes happen, they can have long-term effects on how we’ll recall that memory in the future. Take storytelling for example. When we describe our memories to other people, we might ask ourselves whether it’s important to get the facts straight, or whether we only want to make the listener laugh. And we might change the story’s details depending on the listener’s attitudes. It isn’t only the message that changes, but sometimes it’s also the memory itself. This is known as the “audience-tuning effect”, showing us how our memories can change automatically over time, as a product of how, when, and why we access them. In fact, sometimes simply the act of repeating a memory can be exactly what makes it easy to change. This is known as “retrieval-enhanced suggestibility”. In a typical study of this effect, participants watched a short film, then took a memory test a few days later. But during the days between watching the film and taking the final test, two other things happened. First, half of the participants took a practice memory test. Second, all of the participants were given a description of the film to read, which contained some false details. Participants who took a practice memory test shortly before reading the false information were more likely to reproduce this false information in the final memory test. Why might this be? One theory is that repeating our memories of past events can temporarily make those memories malleable. In other words, retrieving(找回)a memory might be a bit like taking ice-cream out of the freezer and leaving it in direct sunlight for a while. By the time our memory goes back into the freezer, it might have naturally become a little misshapen, especially if someone has influenced it purposely in the meantime. These findings lead us to wonder how much our most treasured memories have changed since the very first time we remembered them. Remembering is an act of storytelling, after all. And our memories are only ever as reliable as the most recent story we told ourselves. 27.The writer takes storytelling for example to prove that ______. A.it is impossible to change the listener’s attitudes B.it is important to describe our memories directly C.we can make other people laugh by telling stories D.we may change our memories according to the listener 28.What do you know about memory from the passage? A.Our memories can change our personalities. B.Our memories can correct mistakes on their own. C.We can take a practice memory test to strengthen our memories. D.We can reproduce the information while repeating our memories. 29.The word “malleable” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ______. A.reasonable B.valuable C.changeable D.controllable 【答案】27.D 28.D 29.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了我们的记忆并不像我们想要相信的那样一致。 27. 根据“And we might change the story’s details depending on the listener’s attitudes.” 根据“There are countless reasons why tiny mistakes might happen each time we recall past events.” 根据“By the time our memory goes back into the freezer, it might have naturally become a little misshapen, especially if someone has influenced it purposely in the meantime.” C。 D Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the society. Progress shows a person’s ability to change the way he is living at the moment. Progress must lead to a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only if people choose to accept technology and find new and more efficient (高效的) ways to move forward. However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who missed the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and whenever they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or to see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication tools, such as mobile phones and iPads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally. A personal visit carries with its additional feature of having to be in the person’s presence for as long as the visit lasts. With efficiency also comes mass production Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today. Factories have improved efficiency. Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy (精确) than any human hand. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handicrafts (手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item. Nevertheless, we must not make the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view. In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old. It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to think again about their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created. 30.Progress can benefit people when they are willing to ________. A.live a better life than before B.look for more efficient methods C.change the way of living at the moment D.accept technology and find ways to move forward 31.Why does the writer talk about handicrafts in Paragraph 3? A.To explain supply can increase the demand. B.To stress efficiency may have a negative effect. C.To suggest factories should improve efficiency. D.To show handmade objects may be of low quality. 32.What is the last paragraph mainly about? A.Progress can meet the needs of daily life. B.Technology can be used in different ways. C.A new past can be created by making progress. D.People’s attitude decides the use of technology. 33.What can we learn from the passage? A.Technology can make the old products new. B.Technology may cause fewer personal visits. C.Technology can lead to higher quality in production. D.Technology may reduce people’s contact with others. 根据第一段中的“All these, however, remain true only if people choose to accept technology and find new and more efficient (高效的) ways to move forward.” 根据第三段中的“For example, many handicrafts (手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.” 根据最后一段中的“It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. ”并通读本段可知,本段主要讲述人们的态度决定了技术的使用。故选D。 33.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“With the communication tools, such as mobile phones and iPads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally.” Modern Technology Helps Protect Disappearing Art, Culture in China Traditional Chinese art and culture are finding new life on the Internet thanks to the effort to protect the country’s history for a new generation. The project, called ChinaVine, is a collaboration (合作) among the United States and China. Through ChinaVine, the group is sharing Chinese customs and culture using modern technology. “Many Chinese traditions are centered in the countryside, but people are moving to cities as China becomes an economic powerhouse (经济强国),” explained Kristin Congdon. Folk traditions are changing or being lost because people move to the cities for work. The Chinese view their traditional culture as an important part of China’s history. “The traditions that have been practiced for generations should be protected.” said Congdon. To help people learn about China’s cultural heritage (遗产), ChinaVine’s designed a website. Students and professors have explored Chinese villages. They took descriptions and pictures of disappearing art forms for the project. They’ve visited some towns that seldom see visitors, and recorded documentaries (纪录片) of locals as they create their art and share stories of their culture on the website. Batchler, who is studying Piano and Language, joined the ChinaVine team, said he made a life-changing first trip to Beijing in January to research traditional Chinese music for ChinaVine. During the trip, Batchler had the opportunity to share one of his performances from the China Conservatory (音乐学院) of Music, where he will return to study music after he graduates from UCF in May. “ChinaVine inspired me,” Batchler said. “The project is all about people from outside the culture, like me, who come inside to describe it. I have explored the Chinese villages for nearly six years. We travelled around 30 villages and made many resources. ChinaVine hopes anyone who has an interest in China can contribute (做贡献) to the project using social media.” All the website’s materials are open resources, and it means that its texts, photographs, videos, and other media can be freely used by teachers and learners. “We want to continue to add resources to the website and develop our partnerships in China so that the English-speaking world can learn more about the Chinese,” said Congdon. 34.What is the group doing through ChinaVine? 35.Why did ChinaVine design a website? 36.How long has Batchler explored Chinese villages? 37.Would you like to share Chinese customs and culture using social media? Why or why not? 34.The group is sharing Chinese customs and culture using modern technology. 35.To help people learn about China’s cultural heritage. 36.For nearly six years. 37.Yes, I’d like to. A.her classmates said hello to her family B.her mother was very happy to see her picture C.her friend thought it cool to use sign language D.her teacher walked over and talked to her family C We rely on our memory for sharing stories with friends or learning from our past experiences. A.reasonable B.valuable C.changeable D.controllable D Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the society. Modern Technology Helps Protect Disappearing Art, Culture in China Traditional Chinese art and culture are finding new life on the Internet thanks to the effort to protect the country’s history for a new generation. 提示词语:share, a good listener, respect, helpful 提示问题:·How did you communicate with others? ·What have you learned from the experience?
