I seldom kept my things tidy and in order, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started shouting. She shouted back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so busy with my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression was such disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

C
“I spilled soup all over the table, but it wasn’t my fault.” “I got into trouble at school, but it wasn’t my fault.” Such statements are often heard. “It’s not my fault” is a common response for so many people and especially teenagers. Parents complain that they’re tired of “excuses”.
The reason why variations of “it’s not my fault” are so popular is that they remove guilt, blame and anger. Those emotions may come from others’ reactions or our own thoughts. In the case of adolescents, they are often trying to escape from responsibility and punishment.
Some teens would benefit from decreasing their self-blame Those who blame themselves for things that they can’t control tend to be highly self-critical and are more likely to be anxious.
Many teens overly rely on “it’s not my fault”. However, overuse of the phrase can result in feelings of helplessness to control their own lives. Besides, “it’s not my fault” focuses a teen’s attention on what is done as opposed to what needs to be done. In trying to get them to assume responsibility, many parents attempt to convince their children that something is their fault, but this approach tends to be ineffective. A more effective approach is to face up to drawbacks and actively find solutions to them.
People may not have caused all their problems, but they have to solve them anyway. Getting stuck in sharing blame often keeps people from moving forward effectively. What will a person do if he is pushed into a deep lake? He could certainly stay in the water, yelling, “It’s not my fault.” However, that is not going to get him out of the water. At some point, he needs to swim to shore, regardless of whose fault it is.
Like most things in life, freeing ourselves from blame has its advantages and disadvantages. The question isn’t what is “right”, but what is the most effective in moving forward.
8. Who is likely to rely on “it’s not my fault”?
A. A highly self-critical teenager. B. A teenager unwilling to admit a fault.
C. A teenager facing up to his responsibilities. D. A teenager anxious about uncontrollable things.
9. What is the author’s advice on getting teens to assume responsibility?
A. Persuading them to admit their fault. B. Letting them focus on what has been done.
C. Making them deal with the mistake actively. D. Helping them analyze the reason for the mistake.
10. Why does the author raise such a question in paragraph 5?
A. To suggest we face up to drawbacks actively.
B. To show handling problems should come first.
C. To explain why teenagers get stuck in sharing blame.
D. To analyze what kind of problems are caused by others.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To help teenagers face mistakes properly. B. To help teenagers identify personal value.
C. To tell parents how to educate their children. D. To tell children to do self-reflection positively.
D
We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive. Conditioned as we are to passive learning, it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay(传闻) and rumor.
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word, to another person. That person, in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it. Then the two written statements are compared. Typically, the original message has changed.
That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping it with their own personal style. Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors: A statement of opinion by one writer may be restated as fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another; and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.
12. According to the passage, active learning may occur in ________.
A. reading scientific journals
B. listening to the teacher in class
C. doing a chemical experiment
D. watching news programmes on TV
13. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Classroom. B. Newspapers.
C. Active learning. D. Passive learning.
14. The game Rumor is mentioned in Paragraph 4 in order to tell readers that ________.
A. playing games can make people more active
B. people tend to like telling lies when playing games
C. a message may be changed when being passed on
D. people may have problems with their sense of hearing
15. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Scholars and authors can’t be trusted.
B. Passive learning may not be reliable.
C. People like spreading rumors in daily life.
D Active learning is more Important than passive learning.

My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past; about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week’s suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him.

通过阅读分析文章第一段内容“I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.(我从来不讲究整洁,而我的室友凯特却非常有条理。
根据文章第二段中的“Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!”(Kate走进房间。很快,我听到她在尖叫:“把你的鞋子拿走!为什么在我床底下!”)”可知,作者的鞋子在Kate的床底下使Kate很生气。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段末尾句内容“All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.(突然,一种温暖的同情在我的心中升起)”可知,在看到Kate接电话后的状态后,一种温暖的同情在作者的心中升起,于是她收拾起东西。 故选A项。
通读文章可知,文章为分总结构,末尾段落点明主旨要义“Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.
Why was Kate angry that evening?
A. She couldn’t find her books. B. She heard the author shouting loud.
C. She saw the author’s shoes under her bed. D. She got the news that her grandma was ill.
确定关键词为“angry”,利用寻读法定位到文章第二段中的“Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!”(Kate走进房间。很快,我听到她在尖叫:“把你的鞋子拿走!为什么在我床底下!”)” 原句中并未出现angry,但“screaming”以及直接引语中使用的感叹号已然告知了“angry”的程度。通过原文可知,Kate生气是由于作者将鞋放在了她的床底下。C.选项She saw the author’s shoes under her bed.
Some teens would benefit from decreasing their self-blame. Those who blame themselves for things that they can’t control tend to be highly self-critical and are more likely to be anxious.
B 9. C 10. B 11. A
根据第二段“The reason why variations of “it’s not my fault” are so popular is that they remove guilt, blame and anger. Those emotions may come from others’ reactions or our own thoughts. In the case of adolescents, they are often trying to escape from responsibility and punishment.(各种各样的“这不是我的错”之所以如此受欢迎,是因为它们消除了内疚、责备和愤怒。这些情绪可能来自他人的反应或我们自己的想法。就青少年而言,他们常常试图逃避责任和惩罚)”可知,那些不愿意承认错误的人很可能依赖于说“这不是我的错”。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In trying to get them to assume responsibility, many parents attempt to convince their children that something is their fault, but this approach tends to be ineffective. A more effective approach is to face up to drawbacks and actively find solutions to them.(为了让孩子承担责任,许多父母试图让孩子相信有些事情是他们的错,但这种方法往往是无效的。更有效的方法是正视缺点并积极寻找解决办法)”可知,关于让青少年承担责任,作者的建议是让他们积极地处理错误。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“People may not have caused all their problems, but they have to solve them anyway. (人们可能不是所有问题的始作俑者,但无论如何他们必须解决问题。陷入互相指责的困境往往会阻碍人们有效地向前发展。如果一个人被推入深湖中,他会怎么做?他当然可以呆在水里,大喊:“这不是我的错。”然而,这并不能把他从水里救出来。在某种程度上,他需要游到岸边,不管这是谁的错)”可知,作者提及这个问题是为了表明首先要解决问题,而不是追究谁的责任。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Like most things in life, freeing ourselves from blame has its advantages and disadvantages. The question isn’t what is “right”, but what is the most effective in moving forward.(就像生活中的大多数事情一样,把自己从责备中解脱出来既有好处也有坏处。问题不在于什么是“正确的”,而在于什么是最有效的前进方式)”可知,把自己从责备中解脱出来有好处也有坏处,但问题的根本不在于什么是正确的,而是什么是最有效的前进方式,结合上文中对“不是我的错”这一流行陈述的好处和坏处的分析,并用提问的方式表明无论谁的错,都应该先要解决问题,不断前进,所以本文的写作目的是帮助青少年如何正确地面对错误。故选A项。
D. Active learning is more Important than passive learning.
C 13. D 14. C 15. B

He had been in so much trouble over the years He expected his teachers to know about his past; about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school.

On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, walking with his hands in his pockets. That image immediately brought back memories of the boy throwing a tantrum in class the other day. Yet I managed to restrain my anger this time. These past few days, I had been building a wall between us with blame and punishment, so I thought to myself that maybe I should try another way. “I want to apologize for the quarrel that we had in the middle of class, and I’m really sorry if it hurt your feelings,” I said, finally breaking the ice.
A spark of surprise flashed across his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with wide eyes. It was clear that he had never heard an apology from a teacher before. “It is I who should say sorry,” he murmured, his face burning with shame, “I should have learned to control myself.” With a smile, I stepped forward and patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go back to his seat. In the days that followed, Tyler didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an active part in class discussions. I had never expected “understanding” could make such a huge difference — it turned one of my worst teaching experiences into perhaps the best one.
