Blooming Baroque, Ludwigsburg, Germany
The Blooming Baroque garden show in Ludwigsburg, Germany, has been welcoming visitors since 1954. Visit the 18th-century palace between March and November and you can not only see displays filled with flowers, but also watch different kinds of birds and visit gardens, climb Rapunzel’s tower and get lost in a giant hedge maze (树篱迷宫).

Tulips explode across the gardens, with more than 800 different varieties. After you’ve wandered through the gardens, you can hire a bike at the main gate and then ride through the endless rows of picture-perfect flowered rainbows. The show runs from March 21 to May 10.
Temps de Flors, Girona, Spain
Girona’s medieval centre is transformed into a living gallery as flower carpets and special sculptures explode throughout the city centre each May. The Girona A Cappella Festival invites music lovers to engage all their senses as the sound, smell and sight of spring fill the city for 10 days in May.
Normandy Tulip Festival, Vendcuvre, France
The French garden of the 18th-century Vendeuvre Chateau in Normandy springs to life in April, as over 30,000 tulips, narcissi and grape hyacinths awaken. Open afternoons throughout April between 2 p. m. and 6 p. m.

Is modern fruit cultivated (培育) to be sweeter than in the past? The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated. Some of the most powerful evidence that fruit is sweeter than before comes from zoos.
In 2018, it was reported that Melboume Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet that it was causing tooth decay (蛀牙) and weight gain. The monkeys at the zoo were provided with a lower-sugar vegetable-based diet instead of bananas.
Among fruit cultivators, the word “quality” is now routinely used as an equal for “high in sugar” (though firmness, color and size are also considerations). In 2010, in an article looking at ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using “molecuiar (分子的) approaches”, a group of plant scientists of the Republic of Korea wrote that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding”. Modern apple varieties, the scientists noted, were on average sweeter than older ones.
Cultivation isn’t the only reason that modern fruit is sweeter; there’s also climate change. Research from Japan found that since the 1970s, with rising temperatures, Fuji apples (which were already a sweet variety) have become significantly sweeter and softer. The lead researcher, Toshihoko Sugiura, said that “if you could taste an apple harvested 30 years ago, you would feel the difference”.
It is sometimes claimed that the sweetness of modern fruit is not due to higher sugar content so much as the fact that the bitterness and sourness of wild fruit have been steadily cultivated out of it. There’s a grain — but only a grain — of truth in this. Studies of wild apples do indeed suggest that some ancient varieties were just as high in sugar as a modern Pink Lady or Honeycrisp. The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples, whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness.
24. Why did Melbourne Zoo stop giving fruit to most of its animals?
A. The animals preferred a vegetable- based diet.
B. Modern fruit did great harm to animals’ teeth.
C. The sugar content of modern fruit is lower than before.
D. The flavor of modern fruit was not good for the animals.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The sugar content is breeders’ first priority.
B. Sweeter fruits are just a result of natural selection.
C. The sweetness of modern apples is equal to the average of older ones.
D. Molecular approaches are adopted to add the sweetness of modern fruit.
26. What do studies of wild apples in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Apples of old species tasted less sweet.
B. The sugar content of wild apples varied greatly.
C. The sweetness of modern apples is of the same level.
D. Fruit is sweet because bitterness in it has disappeared.
27. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Modern or Old: Which Is Better? B. Modern Fruit: Sweetness Is Quality.
C. Fruit Is Sweeter: It’s Not a Misconception. D. Melbourne Zoo: Animals Stop Eating Fruits.
C
It is halfway through October. The sun arrives early and I stare out my window, feeling shame for invading the privacy of the homeless woman who has settled across the street. I am not sure when she first appeared, maybe a month ago. Each morning I watch as she gets out from the narrow space between the two large buildings across from mine.
She wears the same dirty, badly torn dress every day. I can see she fights to pull herself up into a standing position. She fails on the first two or three tries, but determination always wins out. She remains leaning against the wall for several long minutes, appearing to gather the necessary strength needed to pick up her possessions — all packed into five plastic bags. With tears in my eyes, I watch as she places her feet pointing outward to avoid falling. Her steps are measured and cautious as she slowly makes her way to the corner and disappears.
When I first noticed this woman, I went across the street and offered her 20 dollars, but she turned her back to me and pretended not to see me. The expression on her face was one of shame, causing me to feel guilty for invading her privacy. The next night I bought a hotdog and a Coke, and left them in the spot when she was not there. Feeling like a spy, I watched as she ate the hotdog like a starving cat that had not eaten for days.
I too often find myself complaining about life, but when I look out my window and see the old woman, I feel the need to apologize for my foolish pride in not realizing how fortunate I really am.
There are many poor people in my town. I have become familiar with many of their faces, and then suddenly they disappear. I know that one day the old woman will be gone and I will have no idea where she is. I fear that day.
28. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A. Life is tough for the homeless woman. B. Poverty causes the woman’s poor health.
C. The woman doesn’t care about her appearance. D. Possessions mean much to the woman.
29. Why did the woman refuse the author’s 20 dollars?
A. The money didn’t help much. B. She didn’t like the author.
C. Accepting money was guilty. D. She felt her dignity was hurt.
30. What lesson does the author learn from the homeless woman?
A. Complaints can sometimes make life worse. B. He should appreciate his present life more.
C. More is to be done to make life meaningful. D. We should all apologize for ignoring the poor.
31. Which of the following words best describes the author of the text?
A. Optimistic. B. Sympathetic. C. Determined. D. Easy-going.
D
Many people are familiar with the horrible image of wildlife — including sea turtles, dolphins and seals — trapped in abandoned fishing nets. The main issue behind Nylon-6, the plastic inside these nets, carpet and clothing, is that it is too strong and durable to break down on its own. So, once it’s in the environment, it exists for thousands of years, littering waterways, breaking corals and killing birds and sea life.
Now, Northwestern University chemists have developed a new catalyst (催化剂) that quickly, cleanly and completely breaks down Nylon-6 in a matter of minutes — without generating harmful byproducts. More importantly, the process does not require poisonous solvents (溶剂), expensive materials or extreme conditions, making it practical for everyday applications.
Current methods to dispose of Nylon-6 are limited to simply burying it in landfills. When Nylon-6 is burned, it produces poisonous pollutants such as nitrogen oxides. Although other labs have explored catalysts to degrade Nylon-6, these catalysts require extreme conditions (such as temperatures as high as 350 degrees Celsius), high pressure steam (which is energetically expensive and inefficient) and / or toxic solvents that only contribute to more pollution.
To bypass these issues, the researchers looked to a novel catalyst already developed in the lab of Tobin Marks, the leader of the research. The catalyst takes advantage of yttrium — an inexpensive Earth-abundant metal. When the team heated Nylon-6 samples to melting temperatures and applied the catalyst without a solvent, the plastic fell apart — returning to its original building blocks without leaving byproducts behind. In experiments, Marks and his team were able to recover 99% of plastics’ original building blocks.
“Our research represents a significant step forward in the field of polymer recycling and sustainable material management.” said Marks. After filing a patent for new process, Marks and his team have already received interest from many potential industrial partners. They hope others can use their catalysts on a larger scale to help solve the global plastic problem.
32. What is Nylon-6 according to the text?
A. A chemical that causes wildlife extinction. B. The strongest plastic invented in history.
C. A material that is hard to degrade. D. The nest used to trap sea creatures.
33. What is the feature of the new catalyst?
A. Eco-friendly. B. Zero-waste. C. Carbon-free. D. Time-consuming.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The use of yttrium. B. The anticipated result.
C. The research objectives. D. The experiment process.
35. Which of the following could be the best title?
A. Tapped Sea Creatures Deserve Due Attention. B. New Catalyst Found to Degrade Plastics.
C. A New Method to Address Pollution. D. Ocean Pollution Settled for Good.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Every time I put on my seat belt, check my mirror and turn on the engine, I type in the address of wherever I’m going into my phone. 36 Without the guide of GPS — the Global Positioning System — not only would I be lost, I’d feel lost. It makes me wonder: Is there anything I can do to improve my navigation (导航) skills? The answer is yes. Here are some steps you can take to boost your sense of direction.
37 If you’re not pressed for time, give up the automobile navigation and try to find your way around town. Next time you go for a walk, go down a road you’ve not walked. Or take the scenic route to your favorite bar. This works if you’re walking, biking or driving. Then see if you can make it back home without a GPS.
Use landmarks to direct yourself. 38 To identify your position, the experts suggest picking a few landmarks in town to help navigate yourself. The ideal landmark is large and far away, like a big sign, a highway, a tall building or a bridge.
Be curious about your surroundings. Whether you’re going somewhere new or to a place you’ve been to many times, it’s helpful to just turn around and see what the view looks like behind you. 39 This gives you visual reminders on how to get back.
Use memory tricks to remember where you are. People with a good sense of direction know their streets. If you aren’t such a person, you can try an expert navigation method. Commit street names, landmarks and routes to memory by using tricks to lock things in. 40
A. Take your time to map your town.
B. I have a terrible sense of direction.
C. Turn off your GPS and get lost on purpose.
D. What landmarks will you recommend to visitors?
E. This is especially helpful when street names are abstract.
F. Not sure if you’re north, south, east or west from home?
G. Looking at your surroundings can help you remember your route.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It took a day’s drive, but distance was beside the point. I always enjoyed long journeys in my father’s car with my family. However, things went different that time. We were moving to a new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down, for my father had a new job there. My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my father. She looked excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new school life. Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and meeting new classmates and teachers, which I was not good at.
On my first day at the new school, I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks. I missed my old friends terribly and wished I could go back to my old school. Feeling lonely. I often spent time alone during breaks and after classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room. I missed the good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging.
As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in. I was shy and found it difficult to strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling of being an outsider. I only had words with my desk mate, Alex, when necessary. Things took a turn for the worse when I knocked off Alex’s water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle immediately and apologized to him. He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me. Soon I found we were avoiding each other.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答.

W: I’m heading to London next month.
M: My home city… How exciting!
W: I was hoping for some advice! I’ve already booked tickets for the Tower of London and the London Eye. I’m also considering a boat trip down the Thames.
M: Do it! It can be so interesting, particularly if you get a good tour guide.
W: Okay! I mustn’t overspend, though. My air ticket costs enough! Any cheap or free activities you’d recommend?
M: Plenty! I suggest Buckingham Palace, where you can watch the changing of the guard. Plus, Borough Market is the place to go if you’re hungry. If you want a taste of London’s street culture, then go to the Southbank Skatepark. It’s near the Thames, so you can visit it right off the boat.
W: Good tip!
M: Many of the big museums are free to visit. Personally, I love the National Portrait Gallery.
W: Why?
M: Each piece there carries specific historical backgrounds, character stories, and cultural meanings. It provides an important window and rich resources for people to understand British history and culture.

W: Welcome to the Nightly News at Nine on Channel 29.I’m Dana Spry, filling in for Robert Smith. The top story of the day is an unusual one for Miami. Do you remember the modern art piece that everyone has been talking about? Yes, it’s the banana taped to the wall at the Art Basel Gallery.Well, David, an artist from New York walked into the gallery yesterday, took the banana from the wall, and ate it. He said his performance was called “Hungry Artist”. The artwork was originally sold for 120 thousand dollars. The strangest thing about this story is that no legal action will be taken against David. Another banana will simply be taped to the wall. The art gallery director said that the price of the artwork was for the idea, and the banana was meant to be replaced. It makes sense, because pretty soon that banana is going to go bad, right, folks? Stay tuned for traffic, weather and politics coming at you in that order right after this commercial break.

【答案】24. B 25. D 26. B 27. C

C. Determined. D. Easy-going.
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. B 31. B

【答案】36. B 37. C 38. F 39. G 40. E
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了提高方向感的几个步骤。
36. 根据上文“Every time I put on my seat belt, check my mirror and turn on the engine, I type in the address of wherever I’m going into my phone.(每次我系上安全带,检查后视镜,发动引擎,我都会在手机上输入我要去的地方的地址。)”和下文“Without the guide of GPS — the Global Positioning System — not only would I be lost, I’d feel lost.(如果没有全球定位系统(GPS)的引导,我不仅会迷路,还会感到迷茫。)”可知,作者每次出行都要依靠GPS,如果没有GPS的引导,作者不仅会迷路,还会感到迷茫,这说明作者的方向感很差。所以选项B“我的方向感很差”符合语境。故选B。

【答案】
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you a couplets writing activity I joined in last Friday. The event took place in our community center, where people gathered to learn about writing traditional Chinese couplets for the New Year. We started with a brief introduction on the history and significance of couplets. Then, a skilled calligrapher demonstrated the technique, and we each got to try our hand at writing our own couplets.
I learned a lot about Chinese culture and the importance of New Year traditions. It was a fun way to connect with my neighbors and express my creativity. I hope you can experience something similar someday!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
However, I was assigned to pair up with Alex to design a poster. Reluctantly, we started working together. I was worried that working with Alex would be very difficult because of our previous relationship. But to my surprise, as the work progressed, we found that we shared many common interests. We put a lot of efforts into the drawings and texts, and finally we completed a quite outstanding poster. Alex seemed to forgive me. He appreciated my efforts and began to care about my feelings. The teacher highly praised our work and our classmates were amazed at the picture on the poster.
Alex proudly introduced that the fantastic picture was drawn by me. I smiled shyly but happily as my classmates crowned me and gave me a thumbs-up. Slowly but surely, I started feeling more comfortable in my new school. I made new friends, including Alex, and began to participate in activities in and after classes. By the end of the school year, I had fully adapted to the new environment. Moving to a new town was not only challenging, but it also opened up a world of opportunities and new experiences for me.
