W: Good evening, bookworms! Welcome to Reading with Susie. I’m Susie Watson, spending this early autumn night with you and the book of this week: Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. This book is a memoir written by Mitch, and it talks about how he reconnected with his old sociology professor Morrie, who was diagnosed with ALS, a deadly disease which makes the patient eventually unable to breathe. The book records the author’s weekly visits with Morrie, where Morrie shares his unique insights on love and life and gradually became the author’s life mentor for years to come. The time I spent reading this book was mostly emotional but thought-provoking. In my mind, this book is well-written and absolutely worth reading. It is short but full of wisdom. Most importantly, this book will make you reconsider your priorities in life. I also want to recommend a list of books that share similar or relevant topics with Tuesdays with Morrie. If you’re interested in getting the list or giving your thoughts, feedback and comments on this book, you’re welcome to contact me via email at readingwithsusie@mail.com or any social media account of this program. My husband made a little two-story house that mirrored our own in color and design for our Little Free Library, while I carefully selected books from our shelves. The idea resonated with (引起共鸣) us immediately – instead of loading boxes into the car for yet another used book sale, we could simply walk them to the curb (路边).
Fifteen or so years later, it’s safe to say that thousands of books, as well as the occasional DVDs, CDs and jigsaw puzzles have been shared through our little library. Situated on a bustling (热闹的) street just a few blocks from a subway station, our little library sees dozens, perhaps hundreds, of passers-by each day.
Many of those who use our library do not hesitate to share their love of this neighborhood resource. One gentleman regularly stops by to pick up books for a nearby retirement home. At other times, we have received cards and gifts, including chocolates and even a personalized sketch (素描) from a local artist.
Like the people who use our library, the books that come and go reflect the broad diversity of our city. Arabic, French and Russian books are staples among the dominant (占支配地位的) English-language books. I’ve even collected favorite books of mine in languages I don’t understand, simply for the joy of adding another edition to my collection. Surprisingly, our library hasn’t solved our book storage problem – if anything, we now have more books than ever before.
I have heard some complaints (抱怨) that Little Free Libraries do not always serve the purpose of building community and may compete with our public libraries and independent bookstores. This has not been our experience. We continue to buy more books than we need and we are fiercely loyal users of the public system. Our Little Free Library has enhanced our love of reading and has connected us to a community of book lovers in the heart of our busy neighborhood.
24. Why did the author and her husband create the Little Free Library?
A. To make friends with book lovers. B. To deal with their unwanted books.
C. To prepare for used book sales. D. To make use of community resources.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. People’s love of the library. B. People’s contributions to the library.
C. The friendships between library users. D. The author’s impression of her neighborhood.
26. What do the books of the Little Free Library reflect about the neighborhood, according to the author?
A. Storage issues. B. Cultural diversity. C. Reader’s preferences. D. People’s reading habits.
27. According to the author, how has her Little Free Library impacted the community?
A. It has weakened public libraries to some extent.
B. It has encouraged the rise of independent bookstores.
C. It has strengthened neighborhood connections.
D. It has become the key community meeting place.
BABC
25. A。从文章第3段“Many of those who use our library do not hesitate to share their love of this neighborhood resource.”
26. B。从文章第4段“Like the people who use our library, the books that come and go reflect the broad diversity of our city.”
27. C。从文章最后1段“Our Little Free Library has enhanced our love of reading and has connected us to a community of book lovers in the heart of our busy neighborhood.”
C
Recent videos claiming that a school in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, serves pre-made meals to its students have sparked heated discussions across the country. People doubt if pre-made meals, despite being convenient, are healthy and nutritious enough for growing teenagers.
Pre-made meals refer to half-finished or finished dishes that are already cooked or prepared, according to the China Cuisine Association. There are several types of pre-made foods, including ready-to-eat food, such as canned food or cooked food in packages, and ready-to-heat or ready-to-cook food, which requires heating or cooking before being served.
Many people tend to think that ready-to-heat and ready-to-cook foods are less nutritious because they usually need to be kept in freezers or refrigerators.
“Actually freezing does not cause a loss of nutrients,” Liu Junya, a 33-year-old dietitian in Beijing, told Teens. “Nutrient loss typically occurs during the heating or frying (油炸) process.” Vitamins from the B group and vitamin C found in meat and vegetables are heat-sensitive and can be lost during the process. By being heated or cooked twice or more, “pre-made foods can be less nutritious than freshly prepared and cooked foods,” Liu said.
Meanwhile, “many pre-made food companies prioritize taste over nutrition,” said Liu. This leads to higher levels of salt and sugar in the food, which may lead to health problems, such as high blood pressure or diabetes (糖尿病) in the long term.
Additives (添加剂) are also a major concern related to pre-made food. In China, there are strict standards for food additives. Currently, China’s food industry has well-developed techniques to preserve pre-made food without the excessive use of additives. Some food can be sterilized (消毒) and then sealed (密封) after cooking, followed by low-temperature storage, allowing for a longer shelf life. However, it’s essential that customers buy pre-made meals from qualified food companies or supermarkets.
It is hoped that regulations on pre-made meals can be strengthened to better ensure nutrition and hygiene (卫生). This way, “pre-made meals will be more accepted by the public,” Liu said.
28. What can we learn about pre-made meals from the article?
A. They are typically costly and tasty. B. They are rich in sugar, salt and vitamins.
C. They taste better than homemade food. D. They are already partially or fully cooked.
29. According to Liu Junya, when does nutrient loss typically occur in pre-made foods?
A. During freezing. B. During cooking. C. During packaging. D. During sterilizing.
30. What is one of the key recommendations for consumers regarding pre-made meals?
A. Buy from reliable sources. B. Check the cooking instructions.
C. Keep pre-made meals frozen. D. Pay attention to the additives used.
31. What does Liu Junya think of pre-made meals?
A. They are a convenient choice for all. B. They are suitable for daily consumption.
C. They can be nutritious if properly regulated. D. They are best avoided for long-term health.
DBAC
和第五段“By being heated or cooked twice ... foods’”可知,营养流失通常发生在烹饪过程中,故选B。
30. A。根据倒数第二段“However, it’s essential that ... supermarkets.”
D
The beautiful skill of leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣) in Tongren city, Guizhou province, has made Guizhou embroidery one of the main types of embroidery in China.
Leaf-vein embroidery dates back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and has been used to share messages among various ethnic groups in southwestern China.
Yang Li, a master of this craft, has combined traditional embroidery styles from the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in her work on leaves, mixing traditional design with modern techniques. Leaf-vein embroidery holds high value as a collectible art due to its complex process, which includes choosing and drying the leaves, then creating and embroidering the patterns.
Yang noted that in the past decade, only around 20 people in Tongren have been able to fully complete the whole leaf-embroidery process on their own. Because of the long, hard work involved and the low number of high-quality pieces made, it’s challenging to keep this traditional skill alive. “I have introduced this style to universities, communities and villages and chosen skilled embroiderers to learn leaf-vein embroidery, but very few have kept going,” Yang said.
In 2011, she opened a processing center, creating jobs for more than 500 women, including women from villages and people with disabilities. As a result, almost every embroiderer now has a collection of handmade items that could fill a museum. “I feel a duty and a sense of urgency. In my lifetime, I must improve and pass on this craft,” she said. In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou Embroidery Intangible Cultural Heritage Industry Base and has since used social media to share leaf-vein embroidery through short videos with her student, Yang Xinyu.
“Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure,” said Yang Xinyu. “As a young person inspired by my teacher Yang Li, I am committed to carrying on this craft and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to continue its legacy (传承).”
32. What is stated in the article about leaf-vein embroidery?
A. It has a history of more than 1,500 years.
B. It can now involve modern techniques.
C. It is widely practiced across Guizhou province.
D. It became popular during the Song Dynasty.
33. Why is it challenging to maintain the leaf-vein embroidery skill?
A. It requires rare materials. B. It relies on older artisans.
C. It has little artistic value. D. It demands great skill and effort.
34. What has Yang Li achieved through her efforts?
A. Introducing embroidery courses in colleges. B. Simplifying the embroidery process.
C. Increasing demand for embroidery products. D. Providing jobs for disadvantaged groups.
35. Which of the following best describes Yang Li?
A. Positive and modest. B. Creative and responsible.
C. Determined and careful. D. Generous and humorous.
BDDB
B。根据第三段“Yang Li, a master of this craft, has combined traditional embroidery styles from the Miao, Tujia... mixing traditional design with modern techniques”可知,叶脉绣如今融合了现代工艺。
33. D。根据第四段“Because of the long, hard work involved and the low number of high-quality pieces made ...”
34. D。由第五段“In 2011, she opened a processing center, creating jobs for ... and people with disabilities”可知,Yang Li通过她的努力为弱势群体创造了就业机会。
Keep reading to discover common walking-form mistakes and learn how to walk correctly.
Looking down
36 . Walking with your head down can have a negative impact on your walking form. Whatever your neck does, your back follows. This makes you feel tired. Decide not to check your phone and make sure your ears are right above your shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles.
37
Weight-bearing exercise like walking is good for your muscles, bones, and joints, but high-impact exercise can have a negative impact if overdone. Even though walking isn’t high-impact, slapping (拍打) your feet down hard can cause stress on your connective tissue and joints. You can limit the stress by landing “softly,” rolling through the foot from heel to toe, staying tall and lifted through the core, using forward and backward movement through the arms, and keeping your hips even while you walk.
Overstriding
In an effort to speed up your pace, you might find yourself taking longer steps, rather than faster ones. 38 . Overstriding increases stress on the ankle, knee, and hip joints (髋关节). Instead, focus on faster foot turnover, soft landings, and feeling light through the core (核心).
Not engaging your core
You may not have spent time thinking about it, but your core is surprisingly important for supporting correct walking form. It keeps you upright, moves energy around, and helps with balanced movement. 39 . Check your posture: roll your shoulders back, align (使成一条直线) your ears with your shoulders and hips, and draw your belly button toward your spine (脊柱).
Forgetting to use your arms
While walking mainly exercises the lower body, your arms are important too. A 2020 study found that limited arm movement makes you walk slower and take smaller steps, making the exercise less challenging and burning fewer calories. 40 .
A. Landing heavy
B. Let your arms move freely for a better workout
C. Your arms aid walking more than your legs
D. Relaxing your stomach can help you walk with good posture
E. Failing to engage it can lead to poor posture and long-term problems
F. If you tend to check your phone while walking, it’s time to put it away
G. The action is natural, but when it comes to walking form, it’s misguided
FAGEB
37. A。根据上下文可知,设空内应为小标题,根据设空后段落里“Weight-bearing exercise ..., but high-impact exercise ... if overdone”、“limit the stress by landing ‘softly,’”等可知,本段主要围绕走路时脚部落地太重的问题,故答案为A。

A research paper reported that the Chinese paddle-fish (白鲟) has been declared extinct.
The species, reaching up to seven meters in 56 (long), became a popular target for fishermen. In the 1970s, 25 tons of paddle-fish 57 (harvest) per year on average. But the construction of the Gezhouba Dam changed the habitat of paddle-fish 58 (absolute). Populations of the fish continued to decrease in 1981, but nobody had yet figured out 59 terrible the situation was. The researchers said the fish had become functionally extinct by 1993, 60 (mean) there were not enough fish to meaningfully reproduce.
Pan Wenjing, 61 is an ocean expert with Greenpeace East Asia, told The Associated Press the extinction of the Chinese paddlefish is “ 62 huge loss” for nature and the Yangtze River is experiencing major environmental damage.
“The ecosystem of the Yangtze River is close to 63 (it) breaking point due to human activities in past decades,” Pan said. “The paddle-fish’s extinction should serve 64 a wake-up call to protect other freshwater species. We have the responsibility 65 (balance) the needs of humans with the needs of life in rivers and seas. Humans should not live alone on this planet.”
56. length 57. were harvested 58. absolutely 59. how 60. meaning 61. who 62. a 63. its 64. as 65. to balance
故填were harvested。
故填who。
故填a。
故填as。
故填to balance。

Dear fellow students,
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Students’ Union
Dear fellow students,
More and more students come to school with smartphones, which makes it difficult for them to concentrate on their studies. On behalf of the Students’ Union, I advocate that we should not bring smartphones to school.
Some students become so addicted to smartphones that their academic performance is seriously affected. In addition, smartphones take up time that could be spent with friends, leading to less emotional connection. Worse still, a growing number of students are caught cheating in exams with smartphones to boost their marks.
Only a complete ban on smartphones at school can stop the harm they cause. Together, let’s say No to smartphones at school!
Students’ Union
A Precious Birthday Present
Holly was confused as she opened the birthday present from her best friend, Susan — it was a twelve-by-eighteen-inch dark blue carpet. Her “thanks” was hardly heard as Holly tried hard not to show her disappointment.
The next morning, I carried a kitchen rubbish bag outside only to find Susan’s carpet lying there. I immediately reached in and pulled it out of the rubbish can. After giving it a brushing, I brought it into the house and put it away.
Before Holly’s birthday, Susan had been a regular visitor in our home. But suddenly I realized it had been nearly three weeks since we’d heard the mention of Susan’s name. I missed her warm smile very much.
“Susan invited us to go to her house after school tomorrow.” Holly said as soon as she arrived from school. From her voice, I sensed she was pleased by the invitation.
We were traveling along the winding country road that led to her house the following day. On the way Susan talked nervously about her foster mom (养母) and the seventeen cats they had taken in and cared for. When we came to a stop, Susan’s foster mom— who introduced herself as Glenda — gave us a warm welcome.
Susan guided us through the house. She proudly showed us her room, which was only decorated with used furniture. I followed Susan’s foster mom, Glenda, into the kitchen. After clearing a small area, Glenda poured us each a cup of black coffee with her trembling hand. Then she began to relax as we drank our coffee and chatted about her cats.
Her eyes shone as she showed her fondness for Susan. But her expression turned blue when she referred to the girl’s past. In a short time, I came to respect this warm-hearted woman who had opened her home to a young girl and attempted to make a difference in her life.

As daylight began to fade, we offered our thanks for the visit and said goodbye. Holly sat quietly in the car on the way home, pressing her forehead against the window as if lost in thought. All the way we didn’t say even a single word. No sooner had we come to a stop in the driveway than she threw open the back door and flew straight to the side gate of our house. I followed her silently and my throat tightened as I observed my daughter standing by the rubbish can looking inside. Soon she puffed (喘粗气), paused for a second or two, and walked inside, seeming slightly anxious and irritated (生气的).
“Is this what you were looking for?” I asked her in a gentle voice as I drew out the carpet from the cupboard and placed it in front of her. She gazed at me with absolute surprise, which soon turned to wild joy. “Thanks. Thank you mom, but...” She nearly screamed out when I threw open my arms and hugged her tightly just as she did with the carpet. I could see tears shining in her crystal eyes, a drop or two splashing onto the dark blue carpet. Magically, what she once didn’t even want to refer to now turned out to be her precious birthday present.

A. It has weakened public libraries to some extent.
B. It has encouraged the rise of independent bookstores.
