In the following years, Li and his wife lived a quiet and comfortable life by farming. But a sudden rainstorm in 1980 washed away their land. Therefore, he decided to plant trees to make a living and protect the local environment.
Seeing he was strong-willed, his wife decided to go up into the mountains with him.
Life in the mountains was very hard. There was no electricity and mosquitoes were everywhere. There were no vegetable fields, so they had to pick wild vegetables to feed themselves. That’s around 1 in 10 people in the world. 2.5 billion people don’t have clean toilets. If we drink dirty water or we can wash our hands when we go to the toilet, we can catch diseases.
In some countries, children walk far every day to get water! As a result, they can’t go to school to get an education (教育).
In 1993 the United Nations decided that March 22nd is the World Water Day. On this day every year, countries around the world hold events to educate people about the problems of dirty water. And they also tell people clean water is something that everyone should have around the world. People organize (组织) activities to raise money to help countries get clean water for their people.
On this day, some people in the UK walk, run or cycle 10km, and others climb mountains. At one school children aged between 10 and 15 walk 6km with 6 litres of water so they can see how they feel to walk a long distance carrying heavy bottles of water. People give them money to do these things and all the money helps get clean water for as many people as possible around the world.

The world uses about 1,000 million tons of water a day. Using water is a human right and everyone should have their own part. But more than 700 million people around the world have trouble getting clean, safe water.
Treating wastewater is a good way to provide fresh water for us. And it also helps the environment by keeping waste out of rivers and oceans. 80% of wastewater around the world is not treated at all, and it is running into oceans. But now we have got the technology to treat and reuse the wastewater.
While 75% of our planet is covered with water, only about 3% is fresh water—that comes from rivers, lakes, ice and snow. The rest, about 97% of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is too salty to drink. Then the technology of desalination comes to help. More than 19,000 factories around the world, mostly in coastal countries use this technology. They process more than 92 million tons of sea water every day. But the technology they use needs a lot of energy.
Scientists are working for a new technology and make it cost less. They want to produce 20 times more clean water and make sure everyone has enough in the future. But for now, the world still faces each day with not having enough water for everyone.
34.How does treating wastewater help the environment?

Do you know ChatGPT? It’s an artificial intelligence (AI, 人工智能) tool (工具). It can answer questions, tell stories and do much more. But it’s very “thirsty (渴的)”, said a new study.
ChatGPT has “homes” around the world in data centers (数据中心). When it works, the computers at the data centers get very hot. Workers then have to use water to cool them down.
Cold water goes into pipes (管道) near the computers. The water needs to be very clean. They can’t use seawater because it can eat away at the pipes.
When you ask ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions, it “drinks” 500 milliliters of water. Scientists used 700,000 liters of water to build ChatGPT. The water use is very big. People can make 370 cars with it.
ChatGPT is just one AI tool. You need data centers to do everything on the Internet. There are more than 8,000 data centers around the world. The number is still growing. We may have to “fight (斗争)” with AI for water in the future.
38.What do we know about the data centers in Paragraph 2?

At one school children aged between 10 and 15 walk 6km with 6 litres of water so they can see how they feel to walk a long distance carrying heavy bottles of water.
A.By letting waste run into oceans. B.By keeping waste in rivers and oceans.
C.By stopping fresh water to rivers and oceans. D.By stopping waste from running into rivers and oceans.
35.What does the underlined word “desalination” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.海水运输 B.海水发电
C.海水淡化 D.海水冷却
36.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.At present, the technology to process water needs much energy.
B.At present, the technology to process water saves a lot of money.
C.In the future, the technology to process water will make less money.
D.In the future, the technology to process water will produce more sea water
37.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Our planet is full of water. B.We still have water problem.
C.Everyone has enough clean water. D.Using water should be a human right.
【答案】34.D 35.C 36.A 37.B

35.词义猜测题。根据单词所在的上下文语境“ The rest, about 97% of the water, is in seas and oceans. It is too salty to drink. Then the technology of desalination comes to help.”可知,地球上97%的水在海洋里,是咸水不能喝,然后下文“More than 19,000 factories have been built around the world, mostly in coastal countries use this technology.”可知有很多工厂被建并使用这项技术。由此可推测desalination的意思应该是“海水淡化”,故选C。
36.细节理解题。根据“But the technology they use needs a lot of energy.”可知,目前,水处理技术需要大量能源。故选A。
37.推理判断题。根据“But for now, the world still faces each day with not having enough water for everyone.”可知,现在,世界每天仍然面临着没有足够的水供每个人使用。由此可知现在水问题仍然非常严重,故选B。
