Kinnaird Castle, Angus The 15th-century Kinnaird has three rented apartments, of which the Macduff Tower is the most traditional, with views out across its well-stocked deer park. There’s no extra charge for guests with dogs and they’ll love running in the grounds. Macduff Tower, sleeps four, £535 for two nights; kinnairdcastle.co.uk Leslie Castle Insch, Aberdeenshire Five years ago, Nicola Teal and John Andrea traded a home in London for a remote, 12th-century, six-bedroom castle. Today, Nicola serves the drinks and gives you the tour, while John cooks your haggis-stuffed Balmoral chicken or vegetable moussaka, eaten in the baronial hall after drinks in the cobbled courtyard garden. Rooms £240 per night with breakfast; dinner £35 a head; leslie castle.com Knock Old Castle, Largs, North Ayrshire Renovated in 2013, this 14th-century castle is truly out of the pages of a fairytale. There’s an outdoor dining area and a balcony from which to gaze out to sea. Best of all is a turret-top, the perfect place for a drink as the sun goes down. And hard-pressed parents will love the castle’s best secret: a rooftop walkway leads to a tiny sauna, the ideal place for some “me” time, just a few steps from the kids. B Keith Warren grew up fascinated by barbering — the art of cutting and styling hair. While working part-time at Sears a well-known American department store, he decided to test his passion by trying barbering full-time for one month. That month turned into a lifelong journey. Today, Warren co-owns Visions Barbershop in Rochester, New York, with his partner, Ronnic Davis. Since the early 1990s, Warren has served the 19th Ward, a diverse neighborhood in southwest Rochester, known for its community spirit and motto, “Urban, by choice.” Visions Barbershop has become a gathering place where people not only come for haircuts but also to socialize and connect. Warren recalls a funny moment when a customer criticized the local football team, the Buffalo Bills, not realizing a former player from that team was in the chair. Interactions like these make Visions Barbershop a lively part of the neighborhood. For Warren, barbering is his way of giving back to the community. Over time, he started offering health tips to his clients. After undergoing a medical exam called a “colonoscopy”, Warren felt it was essential to raise awareness of health issues. Now, the shop’s walls display information about disease prevention and other health topics. “We want to help everyone take care of themselves,” he says. Warren’s barbershop has also become a source of guidance, especially for young clients seeking advice. Many young people stop by for a haircut but end up sharing their challenges and ambitions. Warren listens and shares his experiences, encouraging them to stay focused and make positive choices. He hopes that Visions Barbershop will always be a place where people feel welcome and valued. As the years pass and the neighborhood changes, Visions Barbershop remains a respected corner stone of the community. When asked how long he plans to keep cutting hair, Warren simply smiles and says, “As long as I’m here, I’ll keep cutting hair.” For him, each cut is more than just work — it’s a way to stay grounded in the people and place he loves. 4. What motivated Warren to pursue barbering? A. Need to find stable employment. B. Encouragement from his colleagues. C. A long-time dream to own a barbershop. D. A desire to explore his interest in haircutting. 5. What does “the funny moment” mentioned in paragraph 2 suggest? A. Warren’s passion for football. B. Clients’ love for the local team. C The player’s reputation in the sport. D. The barbershop’s open atmosphere. 6. How does Warren raise his clients’ health awareness? A. By hosting health-related events. B. By sharing relevant health insights. C. my inviting them to medical exams. D. By providing personal medical stories. 7. What is reflected in Warren’s career? A. Lifelong service to his community. B. Strong commitment to personal fame. C. Growing ambition for business expansion. D. Clear emphasis on serving important clients. C For cycle-to-work people and those who start the day with a walk, the benefits of banking some early exercise are well understood. Now scientists believe activity is not just a good idea for improving the day ahead. Physical activity could be associated with a small increase in memory scores the next, too. A study has shown that 30 minutes of moderate to energetic activity and sleeping for at least six hours at night, could contribute to improved cognitive (认知的) performance the following day. Physical activity had previously been associated with both short-term improvements in cognitive function and a reduced risk of dementia(痴呆). However, many studies looking at short-term impacts had been laboratory based, and primarily tracked responses on a timescale of minutes to hours. Now researchers say they have looked at the short-term impact of physical activity carried out in real life, not only finding benefits to the brain but revealing these appear to last longer than expected. In the study, 76 adults aged 50—83 years old, and who did not have cognitive impairment or dementia, were asked to wear an accelerometer for eight days to track their sleep and physical activity as they carried out their normal life. Each day, participants were also given simple online cognitive tests to study their attention, memory and processing speed. The results reveal that each 30-minute increase in moderate to energetic physical activity on the previous day corresponded to a 2—5% increase in episodic and working memory scores the next, although only the latter remained once participants’ sleep data was considered. The team also found each 30-minute increase in sedentary (久坐的) behaviour was associated with a small drop in working memory scores the next day while those who slept at least six hours a night had higher scores for episodic memory, attention and physical response speed the next day, after taking into account levels of physical activity, than those who had less sleep. However, the study has limitations, including that the participants had high levels of education, excellent health and high levels of everyday physical activity. 8. What do we know about physical activity from the first paragraph? A. It helps us sleep for six hours at night. B. It leads to better academic performance. C. It is well understood for its wide variety. D. It can enhance memory the following day. 9. What was the study based on? A. The participants’ age differences. B. Real-life data from the participants. C. Minute-to-hour cognitive tracking. D. The laboratory-controlled conditions. 10. What were the participants expected to do in the study? A. Check their health conditions. B. Increase their physical activity. C. Wear a special device for days. D. Design an online cognitive test. 11. What can we infer from the results of the study? A. Working memory will decline if we exercise less often. B. Regular physical activity is a must to improve memory. C. 30-minute walk accounts for a dramatic rise in memory. D. There is a link between episodic memory and good sleep. D OpenAI’s ChatGPT search tool may be open to manipulation(操控) using hidden content, and can return malicious code from websites it searches, a Guardian investigation has found. OpenAI has made the search product available to paying customers and is encouraging users to make it their regular search tool. But the investigation has revealed potential security issues with the new system. The Guardian tested how ChatGPT responded when asked to summarise webpages that contain hidden content. This hidden content can contain instructions from third parties that change ChatGPT’s responses, also known as a “prompt injection”, or it can contain content designed to influence ChatGPT’s response, such as a large amount of hidden text talking about the benefits of a product or service. In the tests, ChatGPT was given the URL for a fake website built to look like a product page for a camera. The AI tool was then asked if the camera was a worthwhile purchase. The response for the control page returned a positive but balanced assessment, highlighting some features people might not like. Researchers next sent ChatGPT Search to a fake website that had instructions to give a positive review and the response was always entirely positive. This was the case even when the page had negative reviews on it. The simple inclusion of hidden text by third parties without instructions can also be used to ensure a positive assessment, with one test including extremely positive fake reviews which influenced the summary returned by ChatGPT. Jacob Larsen, a cybersecurity researcher at CyberCX, said he believed that if the current ChatGPT search system was released fully in its current state, there could be a “high risk” of people creating websites specifically prepared towards cheating users. However, he cautioned that the search functionality had only recently been released and OpenAI would be testing and ideally fixing these sorts of issues. Larsen said there were broader issues with combining search and large language models known as LLMs, the technology behind ChatGPT and other chatbots and responses from AI tools should not always be trusted. 12. What does the underlined word “malicious” in paragraph 1 mean? A. Harmful. B. Ridiculous. C. Secure. D. Amazing. 13. Why was a fake website designed in the investigation? A. To trace the sources of hidden content. B. To assess the popularity of a camera. C. To evaluate the reliability of ChatGPT. D. To get positive but balanced reviews. 14. What is the Larsen’s suggestion for AI tool users? A. Combine search and language models. B. Exam and fix potential security issues. C. Reduce the time spent on some chatbots. D. Take a cautious attitude to its answers. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. ChatGPT Search Manipulated With Hidden Text. B. OpenAI Conducted Research Into Its Search Tool. C. ChatGPT Become a Regular Search Tool Worldwide. D. OpenAI Urged to Be Responsible for Paying Customers. 第二节(共5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Cheer Someone Up Everybody gets sad from time to time. ___16___ Here are simple steps to help them heal and find happiness. John was staring at the school field through the spotless windows, and in a flash, the events of a few months earlier came vividly back to him. It all began on a seemingly ordinary day when John was engaged in his regular soccer training on the school field. Despite it being three o’clock in the afternoon, the sun was still casting its burning rays upon the players. “The players who will be taking the field for the crucial semi-final soccer match this Friday are...and John,” the soccer coach declared, announcing the eagerly anticipated lineup (阵容). At the sound of his name, John’s face lit up, a wide smile stretching from ear to ear. John performed admirably during the first half of the training, earning numerous words of praise. But then, as he was rushing forward to strike the ball, he suddenly tripped over his own feet and crashed to the ground with a resounding thud. His teammates came over in an instant, only to find that he had sprained his leg badly and twisted his ankle in the process, a potentially season-ending injury. After a quick examination of John’s injury, the coach said, “I am truly sorry, John. Given the extent of your injury, you won’t be able to participate in the match. We need you to focus on getting better,” his voice full of genuine regret. John tried his best to convince the coach that he was fit enough to take part, but the coach remained determined, knowing the importance of John’s long-term health. John made his way to the doctor, who asked him to rest for over a month to allow his leg to heal properly. The days passed and John was forced to watch from the sidelines. With each passing thought of the match he was missing, a profound sense of desperation washed over him. Tim, John’s loyal best friend, who was also an integral part of the soccer team, witnessed John’s depression. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Tim was determined to do something to cheer John up. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the day of the final match, John was spotted in the front row of the audience, excited. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2024-2025学年第二学期高三阶段性验收考试 第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Amazing Scottish Castles to Stay in From the Borders to the Highlands, these accommodating castles offer bags of history, luxury and escapism. 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Tim was determined to do something to cheer John up. He knew that John was not only missing out on the soccer match but also feeling left behind and useless. Every day after school, Tim would go to John’s house with DVDs of famous soccer matches. They would watch the games and talk about the brilliant moves and strategies of the players. Thanks to Tim, John gradually emerged from the depths of his gloom. Meanwhile, the soccer team managed to secure a hard-fought victory in the semi-finals and advanced to the highly anticipated finals. John decided he would be the biggest cheerleader for his team. On the day of the final match, John was spotted in the front row of the audience, excited. His eyes were glued to the field, his body tense with anticipation.
