A mother of nine who started medical school when her youngest child was 4 years old graduated with her degree and plans to be a neurosurgeon (神经外科医生).
Sarah Merrill, now 41, said her journey to medical school began at age 17. She then met her husband and got married. Merrill first thought about going to school part-time to get a degree, but later she decided to follow her dream of attending medical school. Certainly, it was a challenge. Speaking of her successful returning to university, Merrill thought it was largely credited to her family. “When I was accepted at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, we moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona,” said Merrill, who is moving to Indiana with her family to begin her residency (住院医生实习期) in neurosurgery. “In fact, they volunteered for these movements. I know it was tough for all of us.”
Merrill and her children often have “homework parties” where they study for their own courses. Merrill’s choice has given a stimulus to her children. She felt touched knowing her 11-year-old daughter wants to become a surgeon and overhearing her son tell his friends his moms going to be a cool brain surgeon, though he doesn’t understand that really.
Merrill’s next step into a neurosurgery residency will take her into a male-dominated field where only 5 percent of board-certified neurosurgeons are women. Dr Michele Halyard at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine said Merrill was known as a focused student. Halyard said, “If you can deal with nine children and keep your reason, the residency should be a piece of cake because no amount of stress will make you fail.”
Merrill had considered choosing a more family-friendly specialty, but again chose to dream big and follow her original pursuit. It’s the same advice she would give to everyone. “Set a goal that is what you’re really enthusiastic about, and it helps to think small. If you know what your priorities are, focus on the next step. Then you'll get where you want to go.”
24. Why does Merrill speak of their movements?
A. To show the support of her family.
B. To stress her determination to be a doctor.
C. To reflect difficulties in attending college.
D. To tell the process of pursuing her dream.
25. What does the underlined word “stimulus” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Entertainment. B. Confusion. C. Commitment. D. Inspiration.
26. What does Halyard mean in paragraph 4?
A. Merrill will have more stress to handle.
B. Being Mom makes Merrill a better doctor.
C. Staying focused and sensible is the key to success.
D. She is confident of Merrill's being a neurosurgeon.
27. What does Merrill suggest at last?
A. Starting with small things.
B. Getting your priorities right.
C. Being true to your passion.
D. Having the courage to dream big.
C
Birds that migrate(迁徙) long distances tend to be more likely than others to break up with their partners, according to an analysis of 232 species conducted by Sun Yat-sen University.
About 90 percent of bird species are socially monogamous(单一配偶的),which means once they form pairs, they will stay together for life. However, some do end up getting divorced and move onto new partners.
To identify reasons that lead to birds’ breakups, Liu Yang at Sun Yat-sen University in China and his colleagues studied 232 species in one of the world's largest bird databases, Birds of the World. They found that species that migrate particularly long distances to obtain food typically have higher rates of breaking up.
Great blue herons, for example, migrate more than 3,000 kilometers and have a divorce (分离) rate of 100 percent. “This may be because travelling further makes it harder for a pair to return home at the same time,” says Liu Yang. “If you’re the one who gets back first, it’s risky waiting for your partner because you don’t know if it’ll show up because it may have died or been blown off course,” Liu adds. “Finding a new partner may seem a safer bet even if it requires energy to please a new mate.”
Liu and his team members acknowledge that it makes sense for birds with long migrations to have higher divorce rates, but there are exceptions.
Black-tailed godwits, for example, migrate more than 1,000 kilometers from Iceland to the UK or southwest Europe each year but have relatively low divorce rates. This seems to be due to a super ability to keep pace with their partners. Although members of a pair will follow separate migration paths and typically end up more than 900 kilometers away from each other, they are somehow able to return to Iceland at almost the same time, which reduces the risk of breakups. “But most birds are not able to do that—it’s pretty amazing.” Liu concludes.
28. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. Few bird species are devoted to their partners.
B. Most bird species tend to have only one partner.
C. Most bird species have higher rates of breaking up.
D. Most bird species have more than one partner for life.
29. Why do great blue herons have a divorce rate of 100 percent?
A. They get tired of their partners.
B. They are impatient with waiting.
C. They choose different migration routes.
D. It is safer to move onto a new partner.
30. What can we learn about black-tailed godwits in the last paragraph?
A. They set a good example of romance.
B. They have a higher divorce rate than great blue herons.
C. The nearly same returning time reduces the risk of divorce.
D. It is typical to migrate at the same speed with their partners.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Reasons for Bird Migration
B. Migration Linked to Bird Divorce
C. Bird Migration with Long Distances
D. Birds with High Rates of Divorce

Giving silkworm silk a metallic bath may make the strands (丝线) both strong and solid, scientists reported on October 6 in Matter. The work is the latest in a decades-long pursuit of creating fibers as strong, lightweight and biodegradable as spider silk. If scientists can mass-produce such material, the potential uses will range from the biomedical to the athletic. Sewing up wounds, even sporting equipment could get a significant improvement.
Hunting for enough silky material to make these super strong products has been a big barrier. Silk from silkworms is simple to harvest, but not all that strong. And spider silk, the gold standard for hand-spun strength and toughness, is not exactly easy to collect. “Unlike silkworms, spiders cannot be farmed due to their nature,” wrote study coauthor Lin Zhi, a structural biologist at Tianjin University.
“Scientists around the world have tried to spin strong strands in the lab using silkworm cocoons. The first step is to take off the silk’s sticky outer coating. Scientists can do this by boiling the fibers in a chemical bath, but that can be like taking a knife to silk proteins. If the proteins get too damaged, it’s hard for scientists to make them into high-quality strands,” said Chris Holland, a material scientist at the University of Sheffield.
Lin’s team tried gentler approaches, one of which used lower temperatures and the papaya enzyme (木瓜酵素) to help dissolve the silk’s coating. That seemed to work. They don’t have little pieces of silk protein. That’s huge because the bigger the proteins that remain, the stronger the fibers are going to be. After some processing steps, the researchers bathed the pressed silk in a solution containing zinc and iron ions (锌离子和铁离子). That was why some of the strands were so strong—Lin’s team detected zinc ions in the finished fibers.
But Holland wasn’t so sure. “The team’s real innovation may be that they’ve managed to untwist silk in a less damaging way. The silk protein remains in a good state,” he said. “In my mind, that’s a major step forward.”
32. Why is creating super strong silk worth the long-term pursuit?
A. It can be mass-produced.
B. It promotes athletic training.
C. It might have wide applications.
D. It is potentially environmentally friendly.
33. What makes it hard to collect desirable natural silk according to Lin?
A. The absence of silkworm data.
B. The low quality of spider silk.
C. The poor harvest of silkworm silk.
D. The insufficient supply of spider silk.
34. How did Lin’s team make the silk fiber strong?
A. By enhancing its protein.
B. By removing its coating.
C. By bathing it in metallic liquid.
D. By squeezing it firmly in a tube.
35. In what aspect did Lin’s team make breakthrough according to Holland?
A. Mass-producing silk.
B. Analyzing silk scientifically.
C. Creating silk of superior quality.
D. Processing silk in a safer method.

I had always dreamed of winning the school marathon. Ever since I joined the running team in freshman year, I had trained hard to improve my speed. I knew it wouldn’t be easy. There were many strong runners in my grade, and some of them had more experience and skills than me. One of them was Leo. He was my friend, but also my biggest competitor. He was confident that he would win the marathon too.
The day of the race finally came. I was nervous but excited. I put on my running shoes and headed to the starting line. I saw my competitors, some of them looking confident, some of them looking worried. Leo was among them, smiling and waving at me. I tried to relax myself and pay attention to my own running. The coach gave us some last-minute advice and encouragement. He told us to do our best and not give up.
The whistle blew and we were off. I rushed ahead, trying to get a good position. I felt the wind in my face. I heard the cheers of the crowd and the footsteps of the other runners. I kept running, pushing myself to do my best.
After running for a while, I realized that I was in the lead. I couldn’t believe it. I had never been in this situation before. But then I also felt a sense of fear. What if I couldn’t keep it up? What if someone caught up with me? What if I fell?
I tried to shake off (摆脱) these negative thoughts and pay attention to the finish line. But it was getting harder and harder. My legs were burning and my heart was pounding.

Paragraph 1:
I felt like giving up. With these negative thoughts almost overwhelming me, so worn-out was I that my legs got limp and my lung seemed to be about to explode. Naturally, my pace slowed down. With the sound of other competitors’ footsteps coming closer and closer to me, a sense of hopelessness and despair settled over me. “You’ll lose your lead in no time,” an inner voice reminded. I couldn’t help looking back, only to find that Leo was only a few steps away from me.
Paragraph 2:
But then the reason for running in the first place came to mind. With scenes of hard training emerging in my mind, I recalled my dream of winning the school marathon. Bearing the will to win in mind, I threw my head back and ran with my last bit of strength in the direction of the finish line. No sooner had I crossed the line than the crowd burst out thunderous cheers and applause. I was the first! My dream came true! I raised my arms in triumph, feeling an unprecedented sense of confidence.
