I was sitting in a chemistry lab class during my first year of university, nervous about the experiment we were to perform. I grabbed a pipette and, as I feared, my hand started to shake. The experience was disheartening. I was hoping to pursue a career in science, but I started to wonder whether that would be possible. I thought my dreams had crashed to the ground.
I was a boy born with brain damage. My family managed to find good doctors where we lived, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, and I took part in clinical trials testing new treatments. Shortly after my first birthday, I started walking and it became clear my intelligence function was unaffected. So, in some sense, I was lucky. Still, I couldn’t do some things growing up. Both hands shook, especially when I was nervous or embarrassed. My left hand was much worse than my right, so I learned to write and do simple tasks with my right hand, but it wasn’t easy to do anything precisely.
As a teenager, I faced a lot of bullying at school. Feeling alone, I joined a study group called “The natural world”. I thought that getting into the world of animals would keep me away from people. That’s how I came into the field of biology. At university, I enjoyed the lectures in my science classes. Many lab tasks proved impossible, however. As I struggled with my mood, I read a book about depression. From then on, the physiology of mental disorders became my scientific passion. I looked into what was being done locally and was excited to discover a lab that did behavioral experiments in rats to study depression.
At the end of my second year, I approached the professor of the lab to see whether I could work with her. I was afraid to admit I couldn’t do some lab tasks. To my relief, she was completely supportive. She set me to work performing behavioral experiments for others in the lab with the help of colleagues. I loved the supportive atmosphere and stayed there to complete my master’s and Ph.D.
I’ve come to realize that my hands aren’t the barrier I thought they were. By making use of my abilities and working as part of a team, I’ve been able to follow my passions. I’ve also realized that there’s much more to being a scientist than performing the physical labor. I may not collect all the data in my papers, but I’m fully capable of designing experiments and interpreting results, which, to me, is the most exciting part of science.
4. What was the author’s dream?
A To live a normal life.
B. To become a scientist.
C. To get a master’s degree.
D. To recover from depression.
5. The author said he was lucky in Paragraph 2 because _______.
A. he didn’t lose the function of both hands
B. he learned how to walk at the age of one
C. his family could afford to see good doctors
D. his brain damage didn’t affect his intellectual capacity
6. What can you learn from the passage?
A. The team in the lab urged him to further his study.
B. The author finally finished the lab tasks on his own.
C. The author’s experience inspired him to help others.
D. The author’s loneliness led him to the world of biology.
7. What message does the author want to express?
A. Loving yourself makes a difference.
B Opportunity follows prepared people.
C. A bright future begins with a small dream.
D. The sun somehow shines through the storm.
C
People are already paying more and more for food due to global warming — and rising temperatures will drive food prices a lot higher in the next decade. According to a study by the European Central Bank, by 2035, higher temperatures alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.
To find out how this is affecting food prices, Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and his colleagues examined data on the monthly prices and weather conditions in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021. By looking for associations between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures of drought and extreme rainfall, they found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later.
In regions north of 40 degrees, like the latitude (纬度) of New York City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to falling food prices. But above-average temperatures increased food prices in summer and at all times in the rest of the world.
“The study didn’t look at why prices rose, but the likely explanation is that extreme heat is reducing yields,’’ Kotz says. “Crops may be drying out on the vine (藤) when they should be being harvested.’’ Factors such as extreme rainfall had less impact on food prices than average temperatures. This may be because flooding tends to be localized, while above-average temperatures can be very widespread.
Other studies have reached similar conclusions. Kotz’s team then went further by investigating how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model prediction. In the worst situation, global food inflation (食品通胀) due to climate change goes over 4% per year by 2060. “We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges for food security,’’ says Kotz. “Warming-fueled extreme weather is increasingly affecting food production around the world. If farmers don’t adapt their practices to better cope with rising temperatures, the losses will become more serious.’’
8. What does the study focus on?
A. The impact of climate change on food prices.
B. The factors in the rising living costs.
C. The effects of natural disasters on food production.
D. The comparison of food prices in different regions.
9. How did researchers reach their conclusions?
A. By conducting a survey among farmers. B. By referring to previous studies.
C. By tracking some cities for years. D. By analyzing a mass of data.
10. What is the main reason for the rising food prices according to Kotz?
A. Frequent rainfall. B. Extreme high temperature.
C. The increasing demand for crops. D. The influence of trade policies.
11. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To call on people to pay attention to food security.
B. To urge farmers to take actions to deal with the climate issue.
C. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave.
D. To explain the situation of global food inflation.

Advocates of AI chatbots in educational settings say the tools can assist in activities like brainstorming — or help students get started on tough math problems. But many teachers say their students are short of the skills to improve upon what AI produces, or the maturity (成熟) and self-awareness to know where the work of AI ends and their own responsibility begins.
A 2024 study of nearly 1,000 high school students put the matter to a test: 9th, 10th, and 11th graders attended a brief math lesson, then practised solving related problems in preparation for a quiz. Some relied on traditional methods — consulting their notes and textbooks to find possible answers — while others had access to a basic version or a tutor version (辅导版) of ChatGPT.
The results were a success of technology — until they weren’t. Students using the basic and tutor GPTs scored an astonishing 48 percent and 127 percent better than their peers during the practices, respectively, but when the same students went to get back the information from their memory during a follow-up closed-book test, their math skills had disappeared. Test performance of the students who had used the basic version of ChatGPT dropped so sharply that they scored 17 percent below their peers who had relied on pen and paper. Given the opportunity, students used the software as a “crutch” and often skipped straight to the answer, the researchers concluded. When applied at key moments, the technology actually “runs the risk of blocking learning.”
But ChatGPT and other similar AI tools aren’t out of the game. In several studies, the tools performed well when designed to guide student learning-by refusing to give away answers, for example, or asking in-depth follow-up questions. AI is making rapid progress, but isn’t a threat to replace teachers. For now, it’s only as smart as its human makers.
12. What is a problem of students when using AI chatbots?
A. They are not aware of how AI chatbots work.
B. They lack the ability to employ AI effectively.
C. They are incapable of improving AI chatbots.
D They refuse to take their own responsibility.
13. How did GPT users perform compared to students using traditional methods?
A. Basic GPT users performed best during the practices.
B. Tutor GPT users scored 127% better during the test.
C. Basic GPT users’ performance dropped during the test.
D. Tutor GPT users scored 17% lower during the practices.
14. What does the underlined word “crutch” mean in paragraph 3?
A. A device to help people walk. B. A strategy to deepen learning.
C. A tool to improve math skills. D. A shortcut to find quick answers.
15. What are AI tools expected to do in education setting?
A. Enhance students’ thinking ability. B. Follow AI designers’ instructions.
C. Give in-depth answers instantly. D. Replace traditional teaching methods.

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, however, Mary came with good news.

B
At the end of my second year I approached the professor of the lab to see whether I could work with her.

D. They refuse to take their own responsibility.
14 What does the underlined word “crutch” mean in paragraph 3?
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. A

第二节 读后续写(共1题,满分25分)
47. 阅读下而材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 One day, however, Mary came with good news. She told Jane the school music festival was to be held the next month and that her classmates all expected her to sing on behalf of her class. Jane’s eyes sparkled but responded doubtfully, “Can I...?” Mary and I immediately assured her that she could make it. In the following month, with the help of Mary, Jane kept on practicing singing. Beautiful songs echoed in our house again and smiles began to appear on her face. Finally the big day came when she could present herself.
When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. Jane was greeted with warm applause. As she began to sing, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful voice. Seconds after her performance, all the audience rose with thunderous cheers. When wheeled off stage, Jane received praise and bunches of flowers from her teachers and classmates. Jane was moved to tears. The kindness and encouragement from her teachers and classmates stimulated Jane’s enthusiasm for life, making her regain confidence in pursuing her original dream, which I will support wholeheartedly.
