No poverty, zero hunger, quality education, these are some of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)the United Nations(UN)established in 2015. In May 2019, the UN launched the SDG Book Club; each month, it posts on the club website a selection of books that illustrate a particular SDG to help young people interact with these goals.
Batesville Intermediate School launched the Junior Ambassadors (大使) program in August 2019, using the SDG Book Club as a springboard to introduce students to a more global view on world issues. Twenty-four 4th and 5th graders met for 30 minutes four days a week to read, discuss, research, and conduct the sharing of knowledge and solutions to these issues. Research activities, special projects, and guest speakers are additional opportunities for junior ambassadors to build knowledge. What began as a desire to help small-town children expand their views grew into a broader program that affected the school, community, and beyond.
The UN’s recommendation of Serafina’s Promise by Ann E. Burg was perfect for the junior ambassadors to begin their study of the first SDG: no poverty. The book is set in Haiti, so members of local Haitian groups were invited to speak to the program participants. Then, the junior ambassadors used their newfound knowledge to create multimedia lessons, sharing them with the other 480 students.
The study of the second SDG — zero hunger — gave junior ambassadors an opportunity to organize and carry out a read- a-thon (a reading marathon) to raise funds for the Grain of Rice Project’s school initiative in Kenya. The nonprofit’s co-founder, Amy Ahiga spoke to and inspired the students with her passion for helping others.
Junior ambassadors use what they learn to engage with their community and the world, earning the school the American Library Association’s 2020 Sara Jaffarian School Library Program Award for Excellence in Humanities Programming. They can look back with pride, knowing they made a difference. With increased confidence and skills, these children will know that they can and will continue to save the world — one goal at a time.
4. What does the SDG Book Club do?
A. Teach reading techniques.
B. Provide quality education.
C. Address global conflicts.
D. Recommend selected books.
5. What was the initial aim of launching the Junior Ambassadors program?
A. To broaden children’s horizons.
B. To motivate children to set goals.
C. To stress the importance of reading.
D. To make an impact on the community.
6. What is the similarity in the study of the first and second SDG?
A. Multimedia lessons were created.
B. Guest speakers concerned were invited.
C. Students were inspired to raise funds.
D. Junior ambassadors organized read-a-thons.
7. Which of the following can be the most suitable title of the passage?
A. Earning an award from reading

C
I have been studying the French language for three years. This field of study has been the hardest but most precious of my life. I would put it above the study of writing simply because I started writing as a 6-year-old boy under my mother’s guidance. I always “felt” I could write. I did not always “feel” I could study a foreign language effectively.
But here I am, right now, in a French hotel. I spoke French at the border, when I checked in and when I went to get lunch. I fail to speak with fluency. I mishear words. I can’t really use complicated grammar. But my words are perfectly understandable and serve their purpose. I feel, as I always do, like I am lost in the dark, but with each misstep, I find my way more clearly. I didn’t feel it when reading French novels; I didn’t feel it at school. I just felt it when I first arrived Paris.
I’m emphasizing feelings because, when studying, they are as important as any reality. The fear of making mistakes feeds the hopeless and makes learners quit. It is not the study of language that is hard. It is the feelings of who you are at the present level and pessimistic belief of who you will always be that make it hard. The transformation to turn struggles into growth is what truly makes learning a life-changing journey.
Maybe one day, someone will say something to me that I do not understand, and in that moment. I may feel a bit discouraged. But now, I feel a sense of being high. These moments of confidence and motivation are precious, for they remind me of how far I’ve come. They are not the norm (常态), though. The truth is, the lows are what I encounter more often. They are part of the learning process, part of the transformation that shapes us into better versions of ourselves. And yet, it is through these lows that I am constantly learning and growing.
8. How does the author feel about making mistakes in French?
A. Awkward. B. Hopeless. C. Competent. D. Rewarding.
9. Why does the author emphasize feelings?
A. To highlight his struggles in learning French.
B. To show that positive thinking can drive growth.
C. To illustrate that people should follow their hearts.
D. To clarify his experience in mindset transformation.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The lows are always followed by highs.
B. Feeling confident should be made a norm.
C. Struggles are an essential part of learning.
D. The ups are the real times when learning occurs.
11. Which statement might the author probably agree with?
A. Fail again, fail better. B. Stay grounded, work for greatness.
C. Accept the lows, wait for the chance. D. Be courageous, explore the unknown.
D 9. B 10. C 11. A
根据第二段中“I fail to speak with fluency. I mishear words. I can’t really use complicated grammar. But my words are perfectly understandable and serve their purpose. (我说得不流利。我听错单词。我真的不会使用复杂的语法。但我的话完全可以理解,并且达到了目的。)”以及最后一段中“These moments of confidence and motivation are precious, for they remind me of how far I’ve come. (这些自信和动力的时刻是宝贵的,因为它们提醒我我已经走了多远。)”可知,作者认为自己在法语中犯错是宝贵的经历,并且能让他意识到自己的进步,故作者认为在法语中犯错是值得的。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The fear of making mistakes feeds the hopeless and makes learners quit. It is not the study of language that is hard. It is the feelings of who you are at the present level and pessimistic belief of who you will always be that make it hard. The transformation to turn struggles into growth is what truly makes learning a life-changing journey. (对犯错误的恐惧滋养了绝望,使学习者放弃。难的不是语言学习本身。难的是你在当前水平的自我认知,以及你对自己永远会是这样的悲观信念。将挣扎转化为成长的转变,才是真正让学习成为改变人生的旅程。)”可知,作者强调感受是为了表明积极的思考可以推动成长,将挣扎转化为成长的转变,才是真正让学习成为改变人生的旅程。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The truth is, the lows are what I encounter more often. They are part of the learning process, part of the transformation that shapes us into better versions of ourselves. And yet, it is through these lows that I am constantly learning and growing. (事实是,我遇到更多的是低谷。它们是学习过程的一部分,是塑造我们成为更好自己的转变的一部分。然而,正是通过这些低谷,我一直在学习和成长。)”可知,作者认为挣扎和低谷是学习过程中的重要部分,它们有助于我们的成长。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Maybe one day, someone will say something to me that I do not understand, and in that moment. I may feel a bit discouraged. But now, I feel a sense of being high. These moments of confidence and motivation are precious, for they remind me of how far I’ve come. (这些自信和动力的时刻是宝贵的,因为它们提醒我我已经走了多远。)”可知,作者认为自己在法语中犯错是宝贵的经历,并且能让他意识到自己的进步;再根据最后一段中“The truth is, the lows are what I encounter more often. They are part of the learning process, part of the transformation that shapes us into better versions of ourselves. And yet, it is through these lows that I am constantly learning and growing. (事实是,我遇到更多的是低谷。它们是学习过程的一部分,是塑造我们成为更好自己的转变的一部分。然而,正是通过这些低谷,我一直在学习和成长。)”可知,作者认为挣扎和低谷是学习过程中的重要部分,它们有助于我们的成长,由此可知,作者可能同意“再试一次,更好地失败”这一观点,即不要害怕失败,要从失败中学习并再次尝试。故选A。
D
At dusk and dawn, the sky dances with three phases of in-between light. When the sun has just set in the west, the sky changes from the vibrant blue of afternoon to a more relaxed tone, as if it’s settling down for the evening. Soon the east will darken even as the west goes through an abundance of reds, oranges and yellows. And then, at last, the black of night will reign once again. Astronomers are so familiar with twilight (黄昏) that we’ve classified its various stages.
The first that occurs after sunset is called civil twilight, so named because when the sun is just below the horizon, the sky is still bright enough for people to conduct typical “daytime” outdoor activities. This is also when you’re likely to see the most colors in the sky toward the west. Those same molecules (微粒) that distribute sunlight don’t do so randomly; the angle of distributing depends on the color of the light. All the blue light from the sun is sent away in all directions, leaving only the redder colors to shine through, thus creating those breathtaking sunsets.
The next phase is nautical twilight, when the sun is between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon. The sky maybe a deep purple, and stars begin to appear. The term “nautical twilight” came about because sailors used the stars to get their bearings, and it’s at this time of the early evening that celestial navigation (天文导航) becomes possible.
After that comes astronomical twilight. This is when the sun is 12 to 18 degrees below the horizon and the sky finally appears black, with the stars truly shining. We call it astronomical twilight because it may look dark to your eye, but through a telescope, the sky is still bright enough to intervene in some observations.
This last phase of twilight concludes once the sun drops below 18 degrees; the sky becomes fully dark, and it is time for astronomers to enjoy the beginning of their work night.
12. What does the underlined word “reign” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Fade away. B. Draw near. C. End up. D. Take over.
13. What causes breathtaking sunsets during the civil twilight?
A. The standout of red colors. B. The absence of artificial light.
C. The reflection of colorful tones. D. The distribution of all colors of light.
14. What can we learn about the three phases of twilight?
A. Each twilight is characterized by the sun’s position.
B. Each twilight allows for various scientific researches.
C. Nautical twilight is too bright to use celestial navigation.
D. Astronomical twilight is ideal for telescope observations.
15. What will the author introduce next?
A. The impacts of twilight. B. The interpretations of twilight.
C. The process of observing stars. D. The working conditions of astronomers.
D 13. A 14. A 15. C
根据第一段中“At dusk and dawn, the sky dances with three phases of in-between light. When the sun has just set in the west, the sky changes from the vibrant blue of afternoon to a more relaxed tone, as if it’s settling down for the evening. Soon the east will darken even as the west goes through an abundance of reds, oranges and yellows. And then, at last, the black of night will reign once again(在黄昏和黎明,天空在三个阶段的中间光中跳舞。
根据第二段中“All the blue light from the sun is sent away in all directions, leaving only the redder colors to shine through, thus creating those breathtaking sunsets(太阳的所有蓝光被向四面八方送走,只留下红色系的光芒穿透过来,从而创造出那些令人惊叹的日落景色)”可知,民用暮光期间令人惊叹的日落是由于只有红色光能够穿透并闪耀,即红色光的突出表现。故选A项。
根据第二段“The first that occurs after sunset is called civil twilight, so named because when the sun is just below the horizon, the sky is still bright enough for people to conduct typical “daytime” outdoor activities(日落后发生的第一阶段被称为民用暮光,之所以这样命名,是因为当太阳刚刚低于地平线时,天空仍然足够明亮,人们可以从事典型的“白天”户外活动)”可知民用暮光发生在太阳刚落到地平线以下时;根据第三段“The next phase is nautical twilight, when the sun is between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon(下一阶段是航海暮光,此时太阳在地平线以下6到12度之间)”可知航海暮光发生在太阳在地平线以下6到12度时;根据第四段“After that comes astronomical twilight. This is when the sun is 12 to 18 degrees below the horizon and the sky finally appears black, with the stars truly shining(之后是天文暮光。此时太阳在地平线以下12到18度,天空终于看起来是黑色的,星星真正地闪烁着)”可知,天文暮光发生在太阳在地平线以下12到18度时。由此可知,每个暮光阶段的特点是由太阳的位置决定的。故选A项。
根据最后一段“This last phase of twilight concludes once the sun drops below 18 degrees; the sky becomes fully dark, and it is time for astronomers to enjoy the beginning of their work night(一旦太阳降到18度以下,这个最后的黄昏阶段就结束了;天空完全变黑,天文学家们可以享受他们工作之夜的开始了)”可知,文章最后介绍了天文暮光结束后天空完全变黑,天文学家开始他们的工作夜晚。
You have to make a speech. You have done your research and now have plenty of ideas bouncing around in your head that you want to get across. The big question you face at this point is how to organize those thoughts. ___16___ You need to brainstorm some supporting ideas and then figure out how those ideas fit together.
These are just two cases that many people deal with frequently. Some use outlining to flesh out and organize their ideas, but is that the best strategy? ___17___
___18___ This two-dimensional structure is designed to help you remember information because its format is easy for your mind to remember. More than 250 million people worldwide use them, so why don’t you have a try and see what they are all about?
What is a mind map? Simply put, it is one’s ideas put into the form of a visual diagram that starts with a central idea. Put this idea in a bubble in the middle of a page with lines radiating out to other bubbles that contain related themes or concepts. ___19___ Use words, short phrases or images to express your ideas. And use color-coded bubbles for a visual representation of each branch’s connection.
Studies have shown that this technique of using pictures, colors and visual arrangement has improved people’s recall and memory of information by 10 to 15 percent. ___20___ Creativity is aroused because of the spatial arrangement, enabling people to make more links and associations on topics of any kind. Additionally, it increases one’s productivity because mind mapping makes it easier to learn faster.
So whether you’re in charge of a project or writing a research paper, make this technique a core part of your planning process!
A. But it doesn’t stop there.
B. It should look like a many-legged spider.
C. This is a common problem that many people face.
D. It has proven to increase not only productivity and creativity but also memory.
E. Or perhaps you are planning to write a paper, and all you have is the main topic.
F. If everyone thought in a linear manner, then the answer would be yes, but most people don’t.
G. Enter mind mapping, a technique that shows how different ideas and facts relate to one another.
E 17. F 18. G 19. B 20. A
由上文“The big question you face at this point is how to organize those thoughts. (此时你面临的大问题是如何组织这些想法。)”可知,这里强调面临如何组织想法的问题,而E项“Or perhaps you are planning to write a paper, and all you have is the main topic. (或者也许你正计划写一篇论文,而你所拥有的只是主题。) ”进一步列举了另一种类似的情况,即写论文时只有主题,同样面临组织想法的问题,与上文形成并列,有补充说明的作用。故选E项。
【17题详解】
由上文“Some use outlining to flesh out and organize their ideas, but is that the best strategy? (有些人用大纲来充实和组织他们的想法,但这是最好的策略吗?)”可知,这里提出大纲是否是最佳策略的疑问,而F项“If everyone thought in a linear manner, then the answer would be yes, but most people don’t. (如果每个人都以线性方式思考,那么答案会是肯定的,但大多数人不是。) ”对上文提出的问题进行了回应,解释了大纲并非对所有人来说都是最佳策略的原因,与上文的疑问相呼应。故选F项。
18题详解】
由下文“This two-dimensional structure is designed to help you remember information because its format is easy for your mind to remember. More than 250 million people worldwide use them, so why don’t you have a try and see what they are all about? (这种二维结构旨在帮助你记住信息,因为它的格式很容易被你的大脑记住。全球有超过2.5亿人在使用它们,所以为什么不试试,看看它们到底是什么呢?)”可知,下文介绍了一种帮助记忆信息的二维结构。而G项“Enter mind mapping, a technique that shows how different ideas and facts relate to one another. (来了解思维导图,这是一种展示不同想法和事实如何相互关联的技术。)”引出了思维导图这一概念,正是下文所描述的内容,起到了承上启下的作用。故选G项。
【19题详解】
由上文“Put this idea in a bubble in the middle of a page with lines radiating out to other bubbles that contain related themes or concepts. (把这个想法放在页面中间的一个气泡里,用线条向外辐射到其他包含相关主题或概念的气泡上。)”可知,这里描述了思维导图的构建方式,而B项“It should look like a many-legged spider. (它应该看起来像一只多腿的蜘蛛。)”形象地描述了按照上文方式构建出来的思维导图的样子,与上文对思维导图构建的描述相呼应。故选B项。
【20题详解】
由上文“Studies have shown that this technique of using pictures, colors and visual arrangement has improved people’s recall and memory of information by 10 to 15 percent. (研究表明,这种使用图片、颜色和视觉排列的技术使人们对信息的回忆和记忆提高了 10% 到 15%。)”可知,这里阐述了思维导图对记忆的作用。而A项“But it doesn’t stop there. “Our class recycling project will start next week. You can choose to do it alone or in pairs,” Mr. Lee, the science teacher, announced. “Your goal is to design a recycling corner that will increase recycling rates in our classroom. The best idea will be adopted in the school.” The classroom erupted into enthusiastic chatter as students paired up and began their discussions.
Being a nature and animal lover, Lucy’s dream was big. She imagined birds and fish thriving (茁壮成长) in a plastic-free environment, inspired by her hours spent observing wildlife at her favorite lake. “The first step towards a plastic-free habitat is fostering a recycling habit,” she thought. “I’m sure I can come up with a brilliant idea for the project!” Her daydreaming was interrupted by a light tap from her best friend, Max.
“Do you still have that book on recycling? I’m sure there are many helpful tips that we could use for this project. Shall we work on this together?” Max inquired expectantly.
Lucy recalled having read the library book the previous night and placing it on her bedside table. “Um...” she hesitated, “I returned it this morning... and I’m thinking of working on this project alone.”
“Oh, I see,” Max walked away, disappointed.
The next day, Lucy started working on her project, a smart dustbin. Yes, she had a unique concept for the recycling bin but she struggled to construct it. The design required a standard of workmanship that was simply beyond her capability. Frustrated, she went for a walk downstairs.
“Lucy?” she heard a familiar voice and looked up, surprised to find Max standing there. He had never witnessed her looking so disheartened before; she was walking heavily along with a discouraged expression, sighing deeply. Concerned, he called out to her. “What happened?” he asked gently. Guilt-ridden, she admitted lying about the book and apologized sincerely. Max forgave her readily.
“Well, if you need a partner, all you have to do is ask!” Max replied, smiling.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

She did so and then excitedly described her design concept of the recycling bin. “Cool!” Max chirped. Fired up by her brilliant idea, they worked hard together, making spots for paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Over the week, the pair worked tirelessly to build their recycling bin. They included sections for different types of materials and added sensors that would light up when an item was correctly sorted. But if a mistake was made, it flashed red, and a nice robot voice would show the way. They even decorated it with colorful pictures of a clean world without trash, where animals could play.
Lucy and Max’s hard work paid off. Their recycling bin wasn’t just a bin; it was a beacon of hope, a call to action, and a testament to partnership and deep love for the planet. On the presentation day, their classmates were in awe of their clever design and powerful message. So impressed was Mr. Lee that he advocated for its school-wide adoption. Overjoyed by the positive response, Lucy and Max realized that real change required collective efforts, and their bin stood as tangible evidence that teamwork truly makes the dream work.

The book is set in Haiti so members of local Haitian groups were invited to speak to the program participants.

C. Establishing a platform to share viewpoints
D. Providing a springboard for future life
C. Accept the lows wait for the chance. D. Be courageous, explore the unknown.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
She did so, and then excitedly described her design concept of the recycling bin.
