Every day Juanita Mengel, a 67-year-old woman from the state of Ohio, wakes up and puts on her prosthetic (假体的) leg.
Then, Mengel does the same for Lola-Pearl, her five-year-old cat. Lola-Pearl also missed her back left leg. Mengel has many cats. Most of them have disabilities. But Lola-Pearl is special. She is a therapy (治疗) cat. And, she and Mengel are partners of a kind. They are among 200 therapy cat teams registered in the United States by the non-profit group, Pet Partners.
The group helps humans and pets alike by setting them up into teams to provide animal-assisted (帮助) therapy. The teams visit hospitals, nursing homes and schools and assist those in need. Besides dogs and cats, Pet Partners registers other species as therapy animals, including horses, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, birds and mini pigs.
Taylor Griffin is national director at Pet Partners. She said, “Therapy animals are animals who’ve been gauged whether they are suitable for assisting some people, and are based on their ability to meet new people and enjoy the process.”
Mengel said Lola-Pearl showed signs that she would make a good therapy cat soon after the animal joined her family. “I just knew she would be a good therapy because she was so good with people. People really were attracted to her, too,” Mengel said.
Mengel was a traveling nurse when she was in a car accident that almost killed her. One of her legs could not be saved. Later, she connected with a friend in the state of Missouri who had a severely injured kitten. The cat’s legs were twisted together. An animal medical specialist worked to repair the damage, but in the end, they had to remove one of the baby cat’s legs. That kitten was Lola-Pearl.
Mengel took Lola-Pearl as her cat after talking with her friend. Despite the difficulties Mengel has faced, she is grateful to Lola-Pearl and their work in Pet Partners.
“It’s a really rewarding experience,” she said. “I get just as much out of it as the people that I visit.”

The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Preserve located near India western tip, is the proud — and only — home of the Asiatic lion. By the early 1900s, however, their populations had decreased for homo loss and hunting, leaving fewer than 50 known individuals alive. Though their numbers have risen over the past several decades — climbing to around 670 in 2020, a successful story — the lions are still considered endangered.
One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions’ future is to track them, a hard work. Some animals, like tigers and zebras, have special coat patterns (图案) that provide useful marks to the researchers. But for the Asiatic lions, researchers must look elsewhere.
In 2019, Banerjee, who worked for Indias National Tiger Conservation Authority, developed an AI system to recognize the lions with high accuracy (精准). The AI program, SIMBA, has been applied in practice. “It will be a fantastic tool for long-term lion monitoring,” says Banerjee. He adds, “It could help forest officials arrive at a more accurate estimate (评估) of Gir’s lion population. In a few years, the group will have a rich collection of information — how many lions are male, female, how many will bear babies and how many are dead.”
Despite the advantages, Baneijee also adds his worries. He suggests certain rules be made to prevent main information from being stolen. “Where tools like SIMBA really shine”, he says, “is in helping researchers develop monitoring plans that are keys to the protection of at-risk animals,” he says, “otherwise, all your efforts will be in vain.”
8. What is the greatest difficulty in protecting Asiatic lions?
A. Stopping them from being killed. B. Keeping track of them.
C. Protecting their living environment. D. Increasing their population.
9. How does SIMBA help researchers?
A. By locating lions’ homes. B. By tracking other animals.
C. By monitoring the animal stealers. D. By providing accurate information.
10. What’s Baneijee’s opinion about the AI program?
A. It needs to be widely used. B. It has saved the at-risk animals.
C. Its possible risks should be aware of. D. Its disadvantages should be ignored.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Application of AI on Protecting Animals. B. The AI Program for the Endangered Asiatic Lions.
C. The Measures of Protecting Asiatic Lions. D. The Biggest Challenge of the AI system.

In a few years, the group will have a rich collection of information — how many lions are male, female, how many will bear babies and how many are dead.””(他补充说:“这可以帮助森林官员更准确地估计吉尔的狮子数量。
根据第四段“Despite the advantages, Baneijee also adds his worries. He suggests certain rules be made to prevent main information from being stolen.”(尽管有这些优势,Baneijee也增加了他的担忧。他建议制定一些规则来防止主要信息被盗。)可知,Baneijee对人工智能项目的看法是应该意识到它可能存在的风险。故选C项。
【11题详解】

Everywhere I look, there are new buildings under construction. The neighborhoods that I knew as a boy, filled with beautiful old buildings, have mostly disappeared, and in their place, modern, high-rise buildings have appeared. There is good reason for this. Residents want all the conveniences of modern living. However, how can our children understand and maintain their cultural identity if we erase so much of the physical evidence of it?
The arguments for preserving historic buildings are not simply about an emotional attachment to the past. There are also good economic arguments in favour of preservation. The renovation (修缮) and preservation of historic districts can become an economic engine, drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. For example, in Dubai, the historic Al Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. It also attracts local residents, eager to learn about their city's past.
Some have argued that historic preservation is too expensive, but many recent projects have demonstrated that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, renovation of an existing structure for adaptive reuse can cost about £40 per square metre less than even the most basic new construction, while preserving the beauty of the original building. And, although it is often claimed that old buildings have a more significant environmental footprint than new construction because they aren’t very energy efficient, architects and environmental experts maintain that the greenest building is the one that is already built. New construction almost always has a more serious environmental impact (影响) because it requires the use of all-new materials that must be transported, often over long distances, instead of recycled materials that are already on site. We recycle so many other things. We can and should recycle buildings, too.
Historic preservation is an option that opens many possibilities; demolition (拆毁), in contrast, is irreversible. Once these treasures are lost, they are lost forever, an important link in our heritage that can never be recovered.
12. What drives people to replace old buildings with new ones?
A. Their dislike of old buildings. B. Their pride in cultural identity.
C. Their concern about young generations. D. Their desire for modern comforts.
13. What does the example of Al Bastikiya show?
A. Historic renovation costs much money.
B. Local governments support small businesses.
C. Historic preservation brings economic benefits.
D. International tourism promises economic recovery.
14. What can be inferred about renovating old buildings from paragraph 3?
A. It uses green materials. B. It damages architectural beauty.
C. It reduces enviromental impact. D. It worries environmental experts.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards historic preservation?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Objective.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. A

There is good reason for this. Residents want all the conveniences of modern living.(我小时候所熟悉的社区,到处都是美丽的老建筑,现在大部分都消失了,取而代之的是现代化的高层建筑。这是有充分理由的。居民们想要现代生活的一切便利)”可知,是人们对现代舒适的渴望驱使人们用新建筑取代旧建筑。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“The renovation (修缮)and preservation of historic districts can become an economic engine, drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. For example, in Dubai, the historic Al Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world.(对历史街区的改造和保护可以成为一个经济引擎,吸引游客和小企业来到该地区。例如,在迪拜,历史悠久的Al bastikiya区每年吸引成千上万来自世界各地的游客)”可知,举Al bastikiya的例子表明:文物保护带来经济效益。故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“And, although it is often claimed that old buildings have a more significant environmental footprint than new construction because they aren't very energy efficient, architects and environmental experts maintain that the greenest building is the one that is already built.(而且,尽管人们经常声称老建筑的环境足迹比新建筑更大,因为它们不是很节能,但建筑师和环境专家坚持认为,最环保的建筑是已经建成的建筑)”可推知,翻新旧建筑减少了对环境的影响。故选C项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Historic preservation is an option that opens many possibilities; demolition (拆毁), in contrast, is irreversible. Once these treasures are lost, they are lost forever, an important link in our heritage that can never be recovered.(历史保护是一种提供多种可能性的选择;相反,拆迁是不可逆转的。一旦这些宝藏失去,它们就永远失去了,这是我们遗产中一个永远无法恢复的重要环节)”可推知,作者对历史保护的态度是积极的和支持的。故选A项。

And what’s most important is that no people were injured or killed. But it caused the traffic to stop for a few hours and destroyed power facilities, making the electricity supply in some areas cut off, which affected people’s daily life.

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, however, Mary came with good news.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 One day, however, Mary came with good news. She told Jane the school music festival was to be held the next month and that her classmates all expected her to sing on behalf of her class. Jane’s eyes sparkled but responded doubtfully, “Can I...?” Mary and I immediately assured her that she could make it. In the following month, with the help of Mary, Jane kept on practicing singing. Beautiful songs echoed in our house again and smiles began to appear on her face. Finally the big day came when she could present herself.
When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. Jane was greeted with warm applause. As she began to sing, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful voice. Seconds after her performance, all the audience rose with thunderous cheers. When wheeled off stage, Jane received praise and bunches of flowers from her teachers and classmates. Jane was moved to tears. The kindness and encouragement from her teachers and classmates stimulated Jane’s enthusiasm for life, making her regain confidence in pursuing her original dream, which I will support wholeheartedly.

The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Preserve, located near India western tip, is the proud — and only — home of the Asiatic lion.
A It needs to be widely used.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day, however, Mary came with good news.
