Fourteen-year-old Etueni Nasau and his two 15-year-old cousins took off to a neighbouring island in a small boat. However, their short trip turned out to be an 800-mile, 50-day difficult experience.
Soon after they left, the small boat ran out of its gas (汽油) and moved away from not only the neighbouring island, but also all land. As night fell, the three kids ate a few fresh bananas they took along and hoped that things would get better in the morning.
But the boat kept going day and night. During the day, they felt the sun was too hot, while at night it was very windy and rainy. While terrifying, it was a present from nature since it at least provided them with fresh water.
Food, however, was hard to get. With the bananas gone, the three boys tried their best to get whatever they could find. Every now and then, small flying fish would provide a meal. Their biggest meal during the whole time was a bird they caught, as it sat on the side of the boat.
A few days before they were saved, things got even worse for them to survive (从……幸存下来). The rains stopped, and the three had to drink some seawater. Luckily, a deep-sea boat, on its way to New Zealand, saw the little boat. The sailors (水手) on the boat drew closer and saw the three tired boys moving hands from one side to the other.

A teacher from the UK has left her job to make sweaters for penguins (企鹅) in Antarctica, and her story has become popular online. This might sound strange, but it’s true: she’s protecting penguins from oil spills (溢出).
Many years ago, near Phillip Island in Australia, a big oil spill happened. After that, the population of baby penguins became much smaller. The oil made the penguins’ health very bad. When penguins get oily (涂油的), they try to clean it, but this can be deadly. Their feathers (羽毛), which are very important for keeping them warm and swimming, can be damaged by the oil.
To help, the Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks asked people who like to knit to make sweaters for the penguins. These sweaters keep the penguins warm and stop them from eating the oil. In 2001, after a big oil spill, 438 baby penguins were saved because of these sweaters.
The penguin sweater program has been going on for over 20 years. People from all over the world have sent more than 200,000 sweaters for the penguins!
Some people worry that the sweaters might make the penguins too hot. But the Penguin Foundation says the sweaters are only put on the penguins for a short time, to stop them from cleaning their oily feathers with their beaks, before they can be cleaned by the rescue team.
The sweaters for the penguins must be made of wool and follow certain rules for knitting (编织). If sweaters don’t meet these rules, they are transformed (转变) into toy penguins. Money from selling these toy penguins in sweaters is used to help the wildlife on Phillip Island.
11. Why did the UK teacher leave her job?
A. To increase online popularity. B. To keep penguins safe from oil spills.
C. To start a new fashion direction. D. To work for the Penguin Foundation.
12. What happened after the major oil spill near Phillip Island in Australia?
A. More and more penguins were born suddenly.
B. The health of penguin babies improved quickly.
C. The number of baby penguins dropped clearly.
D. The penguins learned to clean the babies correctly.
13. What is the purpose of the sweaters made for the penguins?
A. To make the penguins look beautiful. B. To provide warmth and avoid oil intake.
C. To protect the penguins from sharks. D. To help the penguins clean the feathers.
14. What happens to the sweaters that do not meet the knitting rules for penguins?
A. They are thrown into the sea. B. They are sold to raise money for wildlife.

Imagine you’re walking across endless hills, with warm sunshine and the sound of birds all around. This peaceful scene is an uncommon one in the modern world. Our natural soundscapes (声音环境) are falling silent as bird populations decrease.
Our study explores the link between birdsong and people, specifically on English vineyards (葡萄园). We surveyed bird communities on 21 vineyards and our results showed that vineyards with more kinds of birds had louder and more complex (复杂的) soundscapes.
But does the silencing of our soundscapes matter to us? The short answer is yes. There is growing evidence about the health benefits of spending time in nature, including reducing risks of heart disease and anxiety.
So as part of our research, we explored the experience of 186 wine-tour participants across three vineyards with different soundscapes. We also improved some vineyard soundscapes with hidden speakers, which played the songs of five additional bird species (物种). This was designed to see how participants’ contact with nature would be affected by increasing the kinds of birds and songs.
The results were fascinating. Visitors who experienced louder and more complex sounds—whether on vineyards with naturally richer soundscapes or on those we had improved—reported enjoying the sounds more. They felt more connected to nature and more satisfied with their tour. With richer soundscapes, they felt more mindful and positive during the tours.
Our study shows the direct effect that birdsong has on our happiness and presents a strong argument for protecting natural soundscapes. So, we hope businesses and people will be inspired to invest (投资) in protection and promote connection with nature.
16. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show opinions. B. To please readers.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To explain the causes.
17. What vineyards had louder and more complex soundscapes?
A. With warm sunshine. B. With endless hills.
C. With more bird species. D. With more tourists.
18. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A The process of the research. B. The background of the research.
C The findings of the research. D. The importance of the research.
19. Which of the following best describes the underlined word “mindful”?
A. Worried about future problems. B. Paying attention to the present moment.
C. Interested in making money. D. Tired from walking too far.
20. What do the findings of the study suggest?
A. Doing deeper research. B. Building better businesses.

“Hello,” says a friendly voice. “My name is Temi.”
For a moment, I’m surprised. I look at the one-meter-tall machine, and it looks back at me. I’ve never met a robot before!
Temi says its job is to help humans. ___21___ They check on patients, bring items to customers, and do some other things.

___22___ These products of technology are at the center of a debate: Should they be made to look like humans or just like what they are machines?
Robots are playing a bigger role in our lives. In some countries, robots have been amusing kids and helping the elderly. Some experts say robots will be better at such jobs if they look like humans. ___23___
“Humanizing the machines can turn cold technology into something that speaks to the human heart,” said roboticist (机器人专家) David Hanson. Hanson is the creator of Sophia, one of the most human-like robots ever built.
___24___ Just look at popular fictional robots like WALL-E. They don’t look like us at all.

What’s more, the human body is not the best design for many of the jobs we want robots to do. Just think of small, smooth robot vacuums. They can go under a sofa to pick up the dust balls. Can human-like robots also do this?
What do you think? Should robots look like humans?
A. Robots don’t have to look like humans.
B. If robots look like us we may expect them to act like us.
C. Research has shown that people feel closer to human-like robots.
D. There are about 8,000 Temis in hospitals and shops around the world.
E. However, some robots are now being designed to look as human as possible.

While Temi has taken on many human jobs, you’d never mistake it for a person. The robot has a screen for a “face”. Its “body” looks like a vacuum (真空吸尘器).
Plus, human-like robots have disadvantages, these experts say. For one thing, they may leave us feeling disappointed. ___25___ However, robots can’t always do that yet. For example, they can’t laugh at the right moments during a conversation. Many people also find human-like robots scary.
B. If robots look like us, we may expect them to act like us.
C. Research has shown that people feel closer to human-like robots.
D. There are about 8,000 Temis in hospitals and shops around the world.
E. However, some robots are now being designed to look as human as possible.

【答案】例文
Nowadays, watching short videos has become very common. Around me, many people watch short videos on their phones during breaks. For example, my classmates often watch funny clips or learn new skills. I also see my parents watching news and cooking tutorials.
I think this trend is positive because short videos are easy to watch and can be educational. They help people relax and learn new things quickly. However, it’s important not to spend too much time on them. Balancing screen time with other activities is key to enjoying the benefits of short videos without losing focus on other important things.
In conclusion, short videos are a great way to entertain and educate ourselves, but we should use them wisely to ensure they add value to our lives rather than distract us from our responsibilities.
