Last week witnessed the activity “A First Taste of Rural Farming” arranged by our school, aiming
to help students feel the charm of farming and gain hands-on experience.
As scheduled, we gathered at the school gate early. Then we marched to the farm, where the
farmers showed us around warmly. And under the farmers’ guidance, we tried various tasks. We dug the
soil to make it soft for sowing. Then we carefully planted vegetable seeds and watered them. Each step
required patience and effort. Besides, we also learned to milk cows, which was both fun and
challenging. The whole course was tiring but rewarding.
This experience gave me a real taste of farming life. Not only did I learn that every bit of food
comes from hard work, but I also improved my practical ability.

Suddenly, I felt several gentle hands on my arms. Voices enveloped me, and a warm hand took
hold of mine. Through tear-filled eyes, I looked up at concerned faces. The teacher and some of my
classmates had followed me. “Please don’t quit,” one of them said firmly. “You can do it. Come on!”
All of a sudden, the feeling of being like an orphan disappeared. My heart was filled with warmth.
Greatly encouraged and deeply moved, I bravely returned to the stage after drying my tears. The
rehearsals eventually went on smoothly, setting the stage for the final performance.
The day finally arrived and the performance received an enthusiastic response. The audience
exploded in thunderous cheers and the teacher smiled with great satisfaction, as if saying “Great job!”.
Getting off the stage, our classmates hugged each other excitedly, feeling proud of ourselves. I felt like
a bird soaring through the sky. From that day on, whenever I encountered discouragement, I persevered.
I will never forget that I was once a “fallen star” who managed to rise and shine through my own efforts,
with the guidance of an exceptional teacher and the unexpected support of classmates.

M: Good afternoon, everyone. We will talk about food in space today. First question: What is the first
vegetable grown in space, Elena?
W: I once read in the newspaper that the potato was the first vegetable to be grown in space in October
1995.
M: Good answer. Nowadays astronauts can eat a varied diet in space that is similar to what we eat on
Earth. Do you know what food the Chinese astronauts are able to eat?

M: Hey, Molly. What are you doing here?
W: Can’t you see that I’m running?

did you?
W: Well, I’ve decided to make a change.
M: Why?
W: I was reading books at home yesterday. When I got up from the bed to get something to drink, I felt
trouble in breathing. Although the discomfort went away soon, I was scared, so I went to the doctor
immediately.
M: Was there anything wrong?
W: He said I would die of heart disease if I kept the former lifestyle.
M: So what was the doctor’s advice?
W: Have a balanced diet and take more exercise. Thus, I have to say goodbye to my favorite fried chips
and Coke, but what annoys me most is that I have to leave my warm bed at such an early time while
others are still having dreams.
(Text 10)
W: Sammie Vance knows there’s nothing worse than feeling left out. For years, she’s been helping kids
who feel lonely make friends. She is running the Budd Bench program. She got the idea for the Buddy
Bench program at a summer camp in 2017. The idea was that anyone at school who was feeling lonely
could sit on the “buddy bench”. That let other kids know someone needed a friend. “It’s really helpful
to have other people notice you,” Sammie says. The idea quickly caught on. To reduce costs and be
eco-friendly, Sammie decided to make the bench out of recycled materials. So she gathered her
community to collect bottle caps. She even got caps from people in Germany, the Netherlands and other
countries. In the end, she collected more than 1200 pounds of bottle caps. Sammie says the effort has
helped her learn to acknowledge her shortcomings and take breaks when working on a big project.
Before long, Sammie was helping other schools acquire benches. She has donated more than 200
benches to schools and parks around the country, and in Mexico and Australia. Her work continues to
spread kindness far and wide. “We recently got a bench in Ghana, Africa,” she says. “That was cool.”

At 93, Doreen Hynd effortlessly keeps busy with cooking, dancing, and teaching her
students across different places. Active in life, she credits her energy to her lifelong practice of
Tai Chi. Hynd praises Tai Chi for developing awareness of peacefulness, inviting the body, mind
and inner consciousness to work together, and offering an experience of lightness and strength.
Born in Australia, Doreen Hynd started her Tai Chi training at the University of Sydney in

culture. Reflecting on her mission, she states, "I have always wanted to bring it to the whole

“A lot of the classes I teach are for retired people, which has been one of the most inspiring
aspects of my life, "Hynd shared.Over her 24 years of teaching Tai Chi, she has witnessed
miracles, such as a student with serious brain damage recovering memories after a year of
practice, despite doctors considering it impossible. "Some students in poor health learned about
me through the college I worked at in Canada, and they've stayed with me since."she added
smiling broadly.
When asked about using Tai Chi for self-defense, Hynd expressed a preference for
connecting with someone approaching aggressively, even if it meant risking her life. She
prioritizes(优先处理) forming connections over fighting. According to Cao Guozhong, a great
Tai Chi master. Hynd has absorbed the essence(精髓) of Chinese culture through Tai Chi. "Hynd
loves to listen carefully to others, approach them with understanding, and transform enemies into
friends," Cao Guozhong explained. "She reflects the philosophy found in the ancient Chinese
text./ Ching, which discusses change in the world."

Since ancient times, food has been a base for cultures worldwide. It is important for our
survival. which is why attention on food is a universal rule that connects us all. To feed our
hungry brains, our ancestors invented fire and cooking, which passed digestion to culture
In fact, a culture's food vocabulary is a window into its values and priorities. The cultural
psychologist Paul Rozin has found that when French and American research participants are
asked what comes to mind when thinking of fried eggs, the French say "breakfast" while
Americans say"cholesterol (胆固醇)".The French think of the cooking experience; Americans
think of what is entering the bloodstream.
Sometimes, slurping(出声地吃)noodles is seen as the preferred way to interact with the
delicious dish. There is a great scene in Juzo Itami's film, Tampopo (1985) where a group of
women in a hotel are being taught table manners and told to eat their Italian pasta noodles slowly
and quietly. Another diner sitting nearby happily is slurping his noodles and the joy he gets from
audibly(声音地)and physically interacting with his food is infectious. Before they know it, even
the teacher is also slurping her noodles.
Besides, specific dishes never represent an unchanging tradition. "My grandma's Egg Foo
Young looks and tastes completely different from what you might find in a restaurant or in
somebody else's home, After asking about her yersion. I realized that she learned how to make it
by picking up different cooking styles as she traveled from Jiangxi, Macao, and Hong Kong,"
said Shirley Ting, a Canadian researcher

Some of life's simplest mysteries can prove the hardest to solve. One such mystery is how a
bird sleeps, especially while it's on a branch.
The sleep cycle during our deepest sleep lasts for several minutes, but in birds, it lasts hardly
10 seconds: they will keep one part of their brain awake, which you might notice when a bird has
one eye open. This will allow birds to run away from a hunt at a moment's notice, even wher
they're in the middle of a sleep.
To fall asleep, a bird's body goes through a series of changes, one of which is that the
muscles lose their hardness, which happens as a main result of reduced brain control of muscle
movement. To stand perfectly balanced on a branch while the muscles become weak isn't easy
Anyone who has tried to sleep while standing on a train would know this. So when a bird lowers
itself, its talons(爪子) automatically and unconsciously bend and hold on tightly to the branch
and until the leg is straightened, the talons will not relax. The key behind this mechanism is the
bird's flexor tendons(屈:肌m) that connect muscles to bones. The flexor tendon stretches, thus
bending the bird's toes.
第6页共11页
But a recent paper found that sleeping European starlings (a common bird found in North
America and Europe) don't use the mechanism. There searchers observed that the birds bent their
knees only slightly, not enough for the mechanism to kick into action. The toes, as a result, were
largely unbent, and the birds balanced on the central part of their feet while they slept.
“Birds are varied and uniaue, exhibiting different bodies, physiologies and behaviors
depending on which species, genus, or family we study. Sleep cycles differ so widely. While we
may not know the whole story yet, there is no denying that it is remarkable that birds manage this
balancing act daily!"said Salama, who has a degree in life sciences and biochemistry from St
Xavier's College, Mumbai.
32. What does the underlined word "This" in the second paragraph refer to?
A. Birds' sleep time
B. The variation in sleep cycles
C. Birds' special brain structure
D. The continuation of deep sleep
33. What is the role of flexor tendons in helping birds balance on branches?
A. Enabling the power of birds' legs
B. Stretching to make talons bend and lock
C. Controlling muscles' hardness and movement
D. Connecting muscles to strengthen their functions
34. What can we infer from Salama's words?
A. Learning birds' habits needs cooperation
B. Denying birds' importance is unwise
C. Studying birds' sleep has challenges
D. Knowing birds'balancing acts is useful.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Why Do Birds Require Less Sleep?
B. Why Do European Starlings Sleep Differently?
C. Why Do Sleeping Birds Have One Eye Open?
D. Why Don't Sleeping Birds Fall Off Branches?

The Fall and Rise of a Star
I was certain that every student in my high school drama class noticed the paper shaking in
my hands as I stood up to try out for the lead role in the play, I wasn't there by choice, but rather
because the teacher required that each of us have a try for a part
As a"model" student, I went along with the reauest, even though it filled me with fear. 1
was small for my age, wore secondhand clothes, and cried easily. I desperately wished to remain
in my seat and disappear into the background. However, there I was standing, on stage. Reading
lines (台词). at least. was something I liked. So, I began to read.
Within moments, the fear was gone. I was reading the part for the main character, "Star,"
who possessed an optimistic view on life despite being an orphan (孤 儿). I wasn't an orphan
myself, but I felt like one. My father had left us, and my mother worked during the day, attended
school at night and spent her weekends buried in homework. It was easy for me to believe that
Star's words were also my own. I finished reading and quickly returned to my seat. When the
teacher announced the list and called my name, I was lost in my thoughts
"Patty." she repeated, "you are Star.Come and collect your lines."
"This cannot be! How is it possible?" With a racing heart, I approached the teacher to ge
the pages.
