Many of you have mobile phones with cameras that can take great photos in daylight and even at night. I just wanted to go through how the club will work. We will meet every Thursday from 4: 00 pm to 6: 00 pm. During the period, we will look at and discuss different photos and photography techniques. We’ll then set a challenge or theme for that week. For example, for this week, we’re going to focus on architecture. Take photos of buildings and then send me your best one. I’ll then select the best three, and we’ll vote on which one is the best, with the winner getting a small prize. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Women are such amazing beings and if you need a bit of inspiration to keep going, here are stories of inspiring women who made a mark on history!
Jane Austen (1775-1817)
She wrote about what life was like during the late 1700s and early 1800s through the books Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma. These books were released within just four years of each other. Two other books, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, were published after she died. Her face is now on the new £10 note, reminding us every day how much her books have affected us all.
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
She was born into a wealthy family, which disapproved of her entering the nursing profession. After receiving a letter from the Secretary of War who asked her to put together a team and look after British soldiers during the Crimen War, she moved to London. This was the first time that women were allowed to serve in the army. She went home as a hero and even received a thank-you letter from Queen Victoria. She left a legacy in healthcare in the war.
Marie Curie (1867-1934)
One of the most famous scientists of all time comes in the form of Marie Curie. Together with her fellow scientist and husband Pierre, she made amazing work on their discoveries. In1903, they received a Nobel Prize. She won another Nobel Prize in 1911, the first woman to do so. The Curies were the pair who made discoveries on radioactivity, which paved the way for the creation of X-rays.
Mother Teresa (1910-1997)
In September 2016, Mother Teresa was announced to be named as a Saint, which she deserves after her devotion to helping people in poverty. In 1929, she traveled to India and dedicated her whole life to helping poor people, especially in the Indian city of Kolkata. She received the Nobel Prize in 1979 and canceled the big dinner celebration. She then suggested giving all of the money to the poor people in Kolkata.

On Dec. 26, Gelinne, 60, was gazing out his back windows of his home in Maryland, at frozen Beards Creek when he spotted a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, losing altitude.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former Navy commander, realized it was going to land in the creek (小海湾). He flashed on a moment from more than 20 years earlier: Sept. 11, 2001, he was at work when terrorists crashed a jumbo jet into the building. He fled the chaos (混乱) but has always wondered if he could have stayed inside and helped.
On this day, he didn’t hesitate. Racing down to the waterfront, he saw the plane had slid to a stop on the broad, frozen creek, far from the shore. It was now sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing. Gelinne knew that the icy water could kill the pilot.
Gelinne tested the ice with his foot and decided not to take any chances walking on it. So, he rushed back and swiftly pulled out a kayak (橡皮船) from his back deck.
He set off. His first attempts left him circling on the spot. But with some muscle, he made progress. It was physically-demanding work. When Gelinne reached the plane, it had sunk; only its tail was visible. The pilot was standing on a tail wing, submerged (淹没) up to his chest. Gelinne edged his kayak off the ice and into the water, paddling toward the pilot. To keep the pilot calm, he joked, “Just hang on to the boat as if you were hugging your wife.” The pilot grabbed the kayak’s bow. Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot out of the water immediately. But all their desperate attempts ended in failure.
By now a police officer had arrived and radioed for help. A boat from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources appeared, breaking through ice as it arrived. It picked up the pilot, Steve Couchman, 71, and rushed him to safety; he would be treated for minor injuries.
Rescue had arrived just in time, Gelinne recalled. “I’m 60 years old. There was no way I could get him to shore.” Still, he was satisfied he’d gone the right way that day.
24.What happened to the small aircraft?
A.It ran out of fuel. B.It sank into the icy water. C.It flew off the course. D.It was attacked by terrorists.
25.Why did Gelinne set out to help without hesitation?
A.To make up for regret. B.To carry out his mission. C.To earn others’ respect. D.To demonstrate his power.
26.Which word best describes the situation the pilot was in?
A.Favorable. B.Life-changing. C.One-sided. D.Critical.
27.What is the best title for the story?
A.Dragging the Pilot. B.Witnessing the crash. C.Seizing the Chance. D.Fighting the Currents.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.D 27.A
根据文章第三段中“Racing down to the waterfront, he saw the plane had slid to a stop on the broad, frozen creek, far from the shore. It was now sinking.(他跑到水边,看到飞机已经滑行停止在宽阔的冰冻小湾上,远离岸边。此时飞机正在下沉)”和第五段中“When Gelinne reached the plane, it had sunk; only its tail was visible.(当Gelinne到达飞机时,飞机已经沉没了,只有尾部还露在外面)”可知,小飞机沉入了冰冷的水中。故选B。
根据文章第二段中“He flashed on a moment from more than 20 years earlier: Sept. 11, 2001, he was at work when terrorists crashed a jumbo jet into the building. He fled the chaos (混乱) but has always wondered if he could have stayed inside and helped.(他突然想起20多年前的一个时刻:2001年9月11日,他在工作时,恐怖分子驾驶一架大型喷气式客机撞上了那栋建筑。他在混乱中逃离了现场,但始终在想自己是否应该留在里面并提供帮助)”和第三段中“On this day, he didn’t hesitate.(在这一天,他没有犹豫)”可知,Gelinne之前因为逃离混乱而后悔,所以这一次他毫不犹豫地选择了去帮忙,是为了弥补之前的遗憾。故选A。
根据文章第三段中“Racing down to the waterfront, he saw the plane had slid to a stop on the broad, frozen creek, far from the shore. It was now sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing. Gelinne knew that the icy water could kill the pilot.(他跑到水边,看到飞机已经滑行停止在宽阔的冰冻小湾上,远离岸边。此时飞机正在下沉。飞行员站在机翼上。Gelinne知道,冰冷的水可能会致命)”和第五段中“The pilot was standing on a tail wing, submerged (淹没) up to his chest.(飞行员站在尾翼上,胸部以下都被淹没了)”及“Gelinne knew he had to get the pilot out of the water immediately.(Gelinne知道他必须立即把飞行员从水里救出来)”可知,飞行员的情况非常危急,需要立即救援,D选项“Critical.(危急的)”能够准确描述飞行员当时的处境。故选D。
故选A。
C
For teenagers and their parents, middle school, the two words can cause much excitement as well as anxiety and fear. Kids are, all of a sudden, really growing up. Their bodies are changing in unexpected ways; they’re shedding their childhood styles, and trying on new ones, for better and — sometimes — for worse. They are forming new friendships and expecting better academic performances in the classroom.
The new graphic novel, Curlfriends: New In Town, written and drawn by author and artist Sharee Miller, reminds us of the many possibilities and excitements mixed within those challenging years. The book follows 12-year-old Charlie Harper, beginning around her first day of middle school. She is tired of letting other people label her and ready to take control of her own story. Starting with her look, she decides to reshape herself.
There are a series of new changes and meetings, where Charlie is also facing various decisions, new things and new relationships. She experiences puzzle and a lack of self-confidence, but also gains a new friendship and a better understanding of herself. The one constant thing in Charlie's life is her affection of drawing and art, through which she ultimately figures out how to mark her place in this new world — her middle school.
Curlfriends is a delightful book, packed with sunny illustrations (插图), even as it also cuts into the heart of the challenging tensions during this intermediate stage of life. Charlie’s new friends feel like most imperfect friendships. They might argue with each other, but the overall feeling is sweet. I love the fact that the book is about day-to-day life, which is rare.
Along with other popular middle school graphic novels, Curlfriends is a book about finding one’s passions while facing newfound responsibilities and independence in changing social settings. Curlfriends is as much about expressions of self-pride and self-respect as it is about showing care for others.
28.Which is closest in meaning to “shedding” in paragraph 1?
A.Improving. B.Recalling.
C.Getting rid of. D.Holding on to.
29.What helps Charlie mark her place in middle school?
A.Her right decisions. B.Her new friends.
C.Her love for art. D.Her teachers’ guidance.
30.What does the author like about Curlfriends?
A.Its views are well-expressed. B.Its characters are distinctive and charming.
C.It has bright illustrations. D.It captures an ordinary everyday reality.
31.Who is Sharee Miller’s book targeted at?
A.Parents. B.Young teenagers.
C.Teachers. D.Art students.
根据第一段中的“Their bodies are changing in unexpected ways; they’re shedding their childhood styles, and trying on new ones, for better and — sometimes — for worse.(他们的身体正以意想不到的方式发生变化;他们正在____童年的风格,尝试新的风格,结果可能更好,有时也可能更糟。)”
根据第三段中的“The one constant thing in Charlie's life is her affection of drawing and art, through which she ultimately figures out how to mark her place in this new world—her middle school.(查理生活中唯一不变的是她对绘画和艺术的热爱,通过这一点,她最终弄清楚了如何在这个新的世界 —— 她的中学里占据一席之地。)”
根据第四段中的“I love the fact that the book is about day-to-day life, which is rare.(我喜欢这本书是关于日常生活的,这是很罕见的。)”
根据第一段“For teenagers and their parents, middle school, the two words can cause much excitement as well as anxiety and fear.(对于青少年和他们的父母来说,‘中学’这两个字会引起很多兴奋,也会带来焦虑和恐惧。)”以及第二段“The new graphic novel, Curlfriends: New In Town, written and drawn by author and artist Sharee Miller, reminds us of the many possibilities and excitements mixed within those challenging years.(由作家兼艺术家莎丽・米勒创作和绘制的新漫画小说《Curlfriends:New In Town》,让我们想起了那些充满挑战的岁月里混合着的许多可能性和兴奋。)”
D
Situated Learning Theory (SLT), first presented by Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger, explains the process and development of learning when individuals have the opportunity to participate in a community of practice. In such a community, new learners have more opportunities to practice within the context of learning. In this light, learning is unintentional. This unintentional nature of learning is what the authors call Legitimate Peripheral Participation (LPP) In LPP, the learner moves from the edge of the community to the center. At first, they participate around the edge and gain expertise until they become more skilled and become experts.
A similar theory is Situated Cognition (认知), proposed by John Seely Brown, Allan Collins and Paul Duguid. Their understanding goes deeper into the social nature of learning and argues that learning cannot be removed from the situations in which expertise is gained and merely be applied in school. The culture of conventional schooling influences what is learned, and decontextualized instruction does not lead to effective learning.
SLT has been used in school settings to improve teaching and learning. It’s important, however, to notice that although the school offers the social context for learning, it sometimes falls short in the use of this theory. The construction of knowledge needs to be put in a proper and accurate context where learners can participate and apply what is learned. The nature of situated learning and the emphasis on LPP as a way to understand how learning develops can be applied in instruction to understand and design learning processes.
SLT is of great value in many ways. It brings to the table the importance of recognizing learning as a series of activities going beyond just sharing content. The interaction of the learner and the expert in the community of practice and the development of the former into a level of expertise together in a contextualized setting are what finally supports knowledge construction.
32.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A.Students must study under the guidance of experts.
B.Participating around the edge is crucial to learning.
C.Special communities are harmful to unintentional learning.
D.Learners can be experts by acquiring knowledge through LPP.
33.What is the common ground of SLT and Situated Cognition?
A.Expertise is merely from content-sharing.
B.Learning should happen in a related setting.
C.Effective learning is the result of decontextualization.
D.Conventional schooling influences the way of learning.
34.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.School needs to lower the expectations of SLT.
B.Learners must be taught the theoretical nature of SLT.
C.School should focus on the accurate application of SLT.
D.Teaching process relies on the academic instruction of SLT.
35.Why is SLT of great significance according to the last paragraph?
A.Because it helps enrich the learning process.
B.Because it reveals the importance of expertise.
C.Because it stresses the necessity of learning.
D.Because it explains the internal logic of teaching.
【答案】32.D 33.B 34.C 35.A
根据第一段中的“In this light, learning is unintentional. This unintentional nature of learning is what the authors call Legitimate Peripheral Participation (LPP) (合法的边缘性参与). In LPP, the learner moves from the edge of the community to the center. At first, they participate around the edge and gain expertise until they become more skilled and become experts.(从这个角度来看,学习是无意识的。这种无意识的学习本质就是作者所说的合法外围参与(LPP)。在LPP中,学习者从社区的边缘移动到中心。一开始,他们在边缘参与并获得专业知识,直到他们变得更熟练并成为专家)”可知,学习者通过合法的边缘性参与(LPP)从社区的边缘逐渐走向中心,并通过参与逐渐获得专业知识,最终成为专家。由此可知,学习者可以通过LPP获得知识并成为专家。故选D。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Their understanding goes deeper into the social nature of learning and argues that learning cannot be removed from the situations in which expertise is gained and merely be applied in school.(它们的理解更深入地探讨了学习的社会本质,并认为学习不能脱离获得专业知识的情况,而仅仅是在学校里应用)”可知,SLT和Situated Cognition都认为学习应该发生在与实际情境相关的环境中,而不是脱离实际情境的学校环境中。
根据第三段中的“The construction of knowledge needs to be put in a proper and accurate context where learners can participate and apply what is learned. The nature of situated learning and the emphasis on LPP as a way to understand how learning develops can be applied in instruction to understand and design learning processes.(知识的构建需要放在一个恰当的、准确的语境中,让学习者能够参与并应用所学的知识。情境学习的本质和强调LPP作为理解学习如何发展的一种方式,可以应用于教学中,以理解和设计学习过程)”可知,本段强调了学校需要将知识构建放在一个合适且准确的环境中,并且强调了SLT在教学设计中的应用。由此推知,学校应该专注于SLT的准确应用。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段“SLT is of great value in many ways. It brings to the table the importance of recognizing learning as a series of activities going beyond just sharing content. The interaction of the learner and the expert in the community of practice and the development of the former into a level of expertise together in a contextualized setting are what finally supports knowledge construction.(SLT在许多方面都有很大的价值。它表明了认识到学习是一系列活动的重要性,而不仅仅是分享内容。学习者和专家在实践共同体中的互动,以及前者在情境化环境中共同发展成为一种专业水平,是最终支持知识构建的因素)”可知,本段强调了SLT的价值在于它超越了单纯的内容分享,强调了学习者与专家之间的互动以及在情境化环境中知识建构的重要性。由此推知,SLT的重要意义在于它丰富了学习过程。故选A。

Shyness is something that many people battle with every day. They are afraid to look people in the eyes and have a hard time speaking to new people. This makes it very hard to get ahead at work and in making new friends and business connections. 36 There are ways to get around this fear and get out there and start talking to people.
●Remember that most people are not looking at you. When you are shy you may believe that people are constantly watching and judging you. 37 Most people are always busy looking at themselves and worrying about what people think of them. When you are talking to someone new they are not picking apart your every word; they are worried about what you think of them.
● 38 Instead of always complaining yourself about things you think you are not doing better, turn your focus to the things that you do well. Your self-talk is very important to how you feel. Stop negative self-talk. Instead remind yourself every morning of all the great things you have to offer. Whenever you start feeling shy again run over your list of things that makes you happy.
●If you do not have an exercise routine, you should start one now. 39 You do not spend hours a day in the gym. You should spend about 30 minutes a day walking or doing something physical you enjoy. If you are physically capable you could also add 20 minutes of light weight training two or three days a week. 40 Being able to stand with your back straight and your head held high will definitely help overcome shy feelings.

故填in。

故填its。
故填were written。
be known as为固定短语,意为:作为……

He was there every morning, sitting motionless on the front steps of his house. His bright blue eyes seemed so far away and sad. In the morning light I could see the shadows that were carved deep within the lines surrounding his eyes.
Each morning I walked this route with my daughter to her kindergarten class. As newcomers, we didn’t know many neighbors. On one beautiful autumn morning, as we passed his house, my daughter burst out and greeted him with a cheerful: “Hi, Mr. Man!” Always the outgoing child! I wasn’t surprised at her enthusiasm. However, her cheerfulness dimmed when he didn’t respond. My daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Hesitating for words, because I didn’t have an answer, I said simply, “Maybe he’s having a tough day.”
Back home, I did the breakfast dishes and thought about “Mr. Man.” Why was he sad? I wanted to do something to cheer him up. I thought of a few ways to make his day a bit brighter, but nothing seemed special enough.
The next morning, after dropping my daughter off at school, I saw one of my other neighbors raking her front lawn. After I introduced myself, she invited me to sit and chat on her front porch for a while. I learned Theresa was a long time resident of the neighborhood. She knew everybody and everything. As we sipped our steaming cups of coffee, she filled me in on almost every neighbor in the community. Theresa had such a bubbly personality, but when I asked her about the man up the block, she got really serious. “Bob recently lost his wife in a car accident. He hasn’t been the same since.” She went on to tell me that Bob and his wife never had children, and she wasn’t sure if he had any relatives.
The following week seemed to whiz by. I had talked to my daughter about what we could do to make Mr. Man smile. Should we bring him cookies or make him a card?
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
With every suggestion I made, she simply said “No, not that.”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From then on, Bob and my daughter exchanged greetings each morning.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With every suggestion I made, she simply said “No, not that. “I asked her if she had any ideas of her own.” I will when it pop into my head! “she said confidently. A few days later, as we approached Bob, my daughter greeted him but he didn’t respond as usual. Then she picked a beautiful red autumn leaf and handed it to him. Surprisingly, he accepted the leaf with a smile. As she skipped back to me, she glanced at Bob and cheerfully said, “See you tomorrow, Mr. Man!” This time, he replied softly, “See you tomorrow.”
From then on, Bob and my daughter exchanged greetings each morning. His eyes, once clouded with sorrow, now sparkled with warmth whenever he saw us. One afternoon, we found a simple card with the heartfelt message: “Thank you, from Mr. Man.” My daughter’s face lit up with joy as she read the note, “He must really appreciate the time we’ve spent with him.” she said. In offering just a little of our time each day, we received something far more precious - a reminder that in the tapestry of life, threads of mutual care and concern weave together to create a warm and vibrant community.

②.接受:accept/take
③.发现:find/spot

Shyness is something that many people battle with every day. They are afraid to look people in the eyes and have a hard time speaking to new people. ●Remember that most people are not looking at you. When you are shy you may believe that people are constantly watching and judging you. 37 Most people are always busy looking at themselves and worrying about what people think of them.
