Passage1.It was just like any other evening. I did the radio show, chatted with listeners and went through emails. Except for working 35 hours a week, I spent almost my other time with my kids. Though my husband did well in taking care of them, I still wanted to get more involved in family activities.
One day, I got an email. The sender said her name is Winifred. She lived in the Buduburam refugee camp (难民营) in Ghana. She had to take care of three small children, but she couldn't afford to buy food or water for them. And she learned that I had adopted (收养) two African children and thought I might be concerned about the problems in Africa and give her some support.
Actually, I knew nothing about Africa. So I turned to a friend of mine for help. As a member of a charity (慈善机构) that aimed to help poor people in Africa, he could help me make sure whether Winifred's words were true or not. Later, I learned that Winifred and her three children suffered from hungry and had no place to sleep. Although having asked for help, they didn't receive any reply. After hearing that, I decided to help this family. In addition, my friend told me many things that happened in Africa, which made me want to help more people like Winifred.
I had a picture in my head of what I thought I would see. But the reality of the Buduburam refugee camp was nothing that I could have ever prepared myself for. The local government turned a blind eye to the refugees living here. And I found Winifred and her family among more than 42,000 people crowded into 140 acres, with no clean water and toilets. Most people ate one meal a day.
Later, I returned home to Seattle where I'd never gone hungry and never lacked water, realizing how lucky I was! And I founded an organization called Point Hope to bring water and more hope to people at the Buduburam refugee camp.

Since she took up knitting in the 1990s, Matsouka has easily made over 3,000 scarves, her daughter estimates.
In the hallway by the door, shopping bags filled with her latest creations await their new home. A knitted blanket is thrown over the sofa where she spends her days.
Firstly given out to people around her as a gift, the scarves were later donated to children’s shelters across Greece as the number of knitted ones grew. Then, through friends, they reached children in Bosnia and Ukraine. The latest batch of 70 scarves went to a refugee (难民) camp near Athens this winter via the UN refugee agency.
Her daughter, Angeliki, tells about drawings and mails that her mother has received over the years: “Thank you, be well, keep going. You gave joy to children, you gave joy to people.” That’s her only reward: a letter, a few words. Matsouka knits one scarf a day, now with small imperfections. Her vision is damaged and she suffers from severe facial pain, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia (三叉神经痛). Angeliki says her mother is an example of resilience and optimism. Matsouka wakes up every morning, drinks a glass of milk, puts on her pearl earrings and gets to work. She takes a break for lunch and a nap, and then painstakingly knits into the night.
She may have even found the secret to a long life in it, she says. “It’s the happiness I get from giving.” she says, sitting beside a big blue bag brimming with yarn (纱线). “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says. Passage3.For 43 years, Sistering has been providing basic services to women experiencing homelessness in Toronto. In the early days, Sistering was created to make resources that could be used by women and children who only had to stay in emergency shelters (应急避难所) overnight. During the day, they had nowhere to go and were often left on the street. It was clear that for homeless women, there needed to be a daytime space that would provide them with resources, a meal, and, most importantly, support to find stability (稳定). Today, the problem of women's homelessness in Toronto is getting more and more serious. The lack of affordable housing, the impact of COVID-19, and cuts to social services have all led to a growing homeless population of women now close to 10,000.
The organization offers a range of services to help women find stability. All services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One of Sistering's most important strengths is its promise to treat each woman who comes through its doors with respect and understanding. The staff says that the road taken by the homeless is often long and difficult. They work with women to know their needs and help them create a plan to move forward.
Despite the services that Sistering provides, the need for resources for women experiencing homelessness in Toronto continues to grow. Sistering understands that they cannot reach every woman in need by themselves, which is why they are expanding (扩大) their services through Mobile Outreach and the creation of satellite services around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The Mobile Outreach program brings Sistering's services directly to women in need in their communities.
If you are interested in supporting Sistering's work, there are many ways to do so. She spends hundreds of hours in sewing (缝纫) unique and well-designed dresses for old Barbies that are donated by people who are supportive of her effort. The little girls who are going to get these toys are migrants, most of whom have traveled with their family for months to get to the US, usually escaping from poor economies and dangerous situations at home.
Lakin knows it is hard to imagine what these children have gone through. She believes having a toy, especially for a child in these conditions, is really important. It’s something that can comfort them and something that they can hold close. While those toys will never take away the trauma they have experienced or the difficulties they still face at present, Lakin said the toys do make a great difference. It is more than just a Barbie toy; at least for a moment, these young migrants can be simply children again. She thinks that is particularly important to them.
“I get a lot out of it, too,” Lakin said truly. “I personally like to hand them out because I love being able to say, ‘I made this for you’, and the smiles and the happiness they gave me. It’s moments like these that make it all worthwhile.”

She has given away nearly 20 Barbies so far, which are made up of toys in a variety of shapes and sizes, and she hopes people will donate more. “It shows these kids we care about them a lot and that we’re not just giving them sandwiches and water and essential clothes. Across the US, 38 million people struggle to get nutritious (有营养的) food, but 42 percent of the nation’s food supply goes uneaten, according to Rethink Food’s website.
Since Jozwiak started Rethink Food in 2017 with his friend Daniel Humm, the project has prepared and distributed more than 26 million meals and saved more than 2.5 million pounds of food waste - but the project has changed over the years.
“The year of 2020 marked a turning point for the food industry as a whole; we were no exception. As restaurants closed and people became jobs, food insecurity (无保障) grew. Rethink Food pivoted its model to support both struggling restaurants and food-insecure communities; we began buying meals directly from local restaurants to distribute to people in need,” said Jozwiak.
At the same time, Rethink Food began working not only with restaurants, but community-based organizations, food banks and other groups to ensure meals reached the needy. It also developed a program to help restaurants rehire workers and provide meals at affordable prices.
Weekly, Rethink Food receives nearly 12, 000 pounds of food from partners like Whole Foods and Chelsea Market restaurants. Rethink Food collects food throughout the morning from these restaurants before dropping it off at its kitchen. Among those facing the risky situation was 18-year-old Colleen Knull,a volunteer firefighter working a summer job as part of the kitchen staff in Jasper Lodge.
Knull has less than one year of experience as a firefighter, and was off duty on that July 22 night, but she did not hesitate to take the lead after receiving the order to evacuate (撤离). The volunteer firefighter quickly knocked on the cabin doors at the lodge, informing the guests who were asleep of the danger. Then she searched for other campers in the area. She led a total of 16 people through a difficult four-hour hike in the dark, guiding them all to safety.
Rebecca Tocher, one of the evacuees, recalled how Knull took charge and made sure that everyone was working together during the tense and frightening hike. Tocher said, “There was intense smoke, my eyes were burning, and there was ash falling constantly. Despite the challenges, she remained calm and led us the whole way.”
Fortunately, Knull was familiar with the trail. “I had previously ridden up on a horse up to that lodge on that same trail. And throughout the way, my employer and I had cut logs uphill,” she recalls. “So, I knew there would be 67 cut logs on the way down.” In addition to counting the logs, Knull also relied on horse tracks and horse waste to guide the group safely through the dark to where her truck was parked. Knull managed to pack all 16 people inside and drove them to safety without any serious injuries.
Knull, who is training to become a full-time firefighter, demonstrates that bravery and resourcefulness are essential in any dangerous situation. - 2024-2025学年高一英语专项提高训练必刷好题
(外研版2019必修第三册)

Passage2.In her tiny Athens apartment, 93-year-old Ioanna Matsouka has knitted (编织) thousands of brightly colored scarves (围巾) for children in need from Greece to Ukraine, and she has no plans to quit just yet. “Until I die, I will be knitting,” Matsouka says.
Her knitting needles click through her expert fingers, her nails painted red. “It brings me joy to share them.”

Passage6.Barbara Lakin, a former sweater designer living in New York, has breathed new life into special Barbies.
Lakin does her best to source Barbies and takes her creative process seriously, carefully sewing the Barbie’s clothes. She has given away nearly 20 Barbies so far, which are made up of toys in a variety of shapes and sizes, and she hopes people will donate more. “It shows these kids we care about them a lot and that we’re not just giving them sandwiches and water and essential clothes. It’s an extra special thing, and I think that they deserve it,” commented Lakin.

Passage7.Rethink Food, a New York-based organization, is working hard to cut food waste and fight hunger by distributing (分发) food from restaurants and businesses to those in need. “We hope our example can show that it’s not just possible, but totally practical to achieve a fairer food system, ” co-founder and CEO Matt Jozwiak said.
Then, the organization’s team create a menu, and prepare meals for delivery — made in the style of family cooking, but by cooks.
“We take great care to make sure the meals at our Sustainable Community Kitchen are delicious, nutritious, and made with love, ” said Jozwiak.

Passage8.On July 22, a fire suddenly broke out in Jasper National Park, spreading quickly and causing significant damage across the Canadian forest.
But what truly sets her apart is her sympathy for others. She explains, “I do it because, at the end of the day, I know I’d want to go home — but I’d also want someone there to help.”

But later I realized if someone had helped me then, things would have been different. So, I decided to be that helping hand for others.” Now, he keeps a fridge stocked with free food by Mark BBQ’s front door for anyone in need.

Passage10.It was rush hours in the morning. Heather Sant, 36, was driving her white 2012 Mazda on the road with her nine-year-old daughter and ten-year-old son in the back. Suddenly, a red pickup truck cut them off. Sant turned the wheel hard to the right, sending the Mazda sliding off the road and down an embankment (路堤) that ended in a drop-off after about 50 feet. If the car didn’t stop, it would take off and dive into the road some 20 feet below. Then a bit of luck: as the car raced toward the edge, its under carriage got stuck, stopping it suddenly.
The people inside, however, were far from safe. The car had come to rest on top of a retaining wall (护墙), balancing on the edge of disaster. One sudden move by anyone inside could throw the car off balance and send it over. Jacob Rodriguez watched everything in terror from the nearby truck company where he works. As an experienced sailor, just like every time he met shipwreck, he whispered a sailing saying “Ship, shipmates, self”. Then immediately he and four other men ran to the car. They leaped onto the trunk (后备箱) to balance the weight as the terrified kids in the back seat watched.
Meanwhile, Julio and his nephew March, were driving to their jobs at nearby Premier Auto motive. Julio jumped out of the car to help while March went to the shop, grabbed a strong rope, and returned to the car. He tied the Mazda to an F-350 truck that had been driven over by one of the other rescuers. With the car secured, the group carefully opened the back doors and helped the children out. But their leaving changed the cars’ weight, causing it to tip forward. The men, still on the trunk, begged Sant to jump into the back seat. She did and then inched out of the back door. Finally, the men carefully got off the trunk. Everyone was safe.
“Another foot,” Rodriguez told USA Today, “and this would be a different story.”
