Norman Lear, a genius producer and screenwriter, passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 101. “Lear’s hit comedy shows changed television forever,” said Darnel Hunt, a leading artist on TV.
Lear grew up in an ordinary family in Connecticut where an unexpected accident brought about his father’s business collapse. So he had to drop out of college and joined the army. In his late 20s, he moved to Los Angeles where he struggled hard for several years, selling furniture door to door. Later on, unsatisfied with his life, he eventually turned to writing for a nightclub comedy act.
By 1971, when he was almost 50, Lear had produced and directed some shows, among which was the hit show All in the Family. In the beginning, it didn’t get on the air smoothly. However, once it did, this show made it to the top 10 for eight of its nine seasons, promising Lear’s life was to change.
This successful show was just the beginning of Lear’s dominating position in comedy shows. Then came The Jeffersons, about a family on its way up. It ran for eleven seasons, one of the longest running comedy shows on television, becoming another successful story. When interviewed about the hit of his shows, Lear said, “Our team read two or three newspapers a day, paid a lot of attention to our families, and came in to talk about everything that was affecting us in our daily lives.” Therefore, it came as no surprise that viewers had a sense of Lear’s own family after watching All in the Family.
“Routinely, Lear’s shows might get fifty or sixty million viewers. He was in direct contact with the living rooms and families of the country,” says Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center. “Lear did everything with humor and sympathy.”
19. What can we learn about Lear from the first two paragraphs?
A. He led a challenging life in his twenties.
B. His shows had little impact on television.
C. His father expected him to be a screenwriter.
D He received good education despite his father’s business failure.
20. Which factor may contribute to the success of Lear’s shows?
A. His shows reflected real daily life. B. His shows featured surprise endings.
C. His shows go on the air immediately. D. His shows dominated the comedy industry.
21. What can we infer from Marty Kaplan’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Lear promoted his shows to families directly.
B. Lear won widespread popularity for his shows.
C. Lear carried out face-to-face interactions with viewers.
D. Lear always focuses on the themes of humor and sympathy.
22. Where is this text probably taken from?
A. A comedy script. B. A story collection.
C. A literature review. D. A news report.

A good gift is one that is more valuable for the recipient than it is for the giver. But most gifts destroy value rather than create it. Think of the Christmas-tree-shaped cookie jar that cost your aunt 530 but is worth considerably less than zero to you, posing a moral conundrum (难题): Do you throw it right into the trash or wait a couple of months? The economist Joel Waldfogel calls this discrepancy the “deadweight loss” of gifts, and estimates that, on average, it is from 10 percent to a third of a gift’s price.
One explanation for the deadweight loss is a mismatch between desirability and feasibility. Consider n gadget that is useful (high disability) but difficult to set up and time-consuming to use (low feasibility). Scholars have found that givers usually focus on desirability, and receivers are more aware of feasibility. Your friend who bought you a fancy wearable fitness tracker probably thought it was a really cool and helpful gift; to you, it seems like a massive headache to figure out, requires an app download and a monthly fee, and offers data that will either make you feel terrible about yourself or turn into a life-ruining obsession. That’s why it is still sitting in your drawer in its original package.
Another happiness-killing mismatch can occur between the receiver’s initial reaction and their long-term satisfaction. As Anna Goldfarb noted in The Atlantic a few weeks ago, givers tend to look for “reaction-maximizing gifts” (such as the wife’s over-the-top response to the car) as opposed to “satisfaction-maximizing gifts.” Once the giver is not present to see the receiver’s reaction, the receiver might not actually be that excited about socks with her best friend’s face on them.
Someone looking for a big reaction might be tempted to buy a wildly expensive gift, which poses its own emotional problems. In the worst cases, they may even be trying to exert dominance over you, or manipulate you into doing them a favor later. Either way, receiving a gift that’s too nice might make you feel guilty. According to one 2019 survey from CompareCards, 46 percent of respondents felt guilty for being unable to give a gift worth as much as the one they received.
In truth, the biggest benefit to most gift giving is to the giver herself. Generosity is truly a way to buy happiness. As my colleague Michael Norton and his co-authors showed in the journal Science in 2008, although spending money on oneself is weakly related to happiness, spending money on others significantly rises the giver’s well-being. Neuroscientists have shown that charitable giving to others engages the reward system, inducing pleasure in one of the same ways that alcohol and certain drugs do. (Maybe this is the real reason Santa is so jolly.)
23. What does “deadweight loss” of gifts in para.1 refer to?
A. The value the gift creates rather than destroys.
B. The money the giver spends on a meaningful gift
C. The good-will and thoughtfulness of the gift giver.
D. The loss of the gift value in the eyes of the receiver.
24. How would the receiver describe the ‘fancy wearable fitness tracker’ as a gift?
A. Fashionable and practical. B. Unfriendly and upsetting.
C. Desirable and satisfactory. D. Expensive and unworthy.
25. What makes the receiver not excited about socks printed with her best friend’s face?
A. That the giver is not present to see the receiver’s reaction.
B. That the receiver was expecting something wildly expensive.
C. Thot the giver is confused about what gift brings satisfaction.
D. That the receiver was expecting something he/she truly wants.
26. Which of the following best describes the main idea of this article?
A. It is in giving that givers receive.
B. Gift-giving is in most cases a win-win situation.
C. The greatest gift you can give is your time and attention.
D. Presents are generally terrible, but they can still bring you joy.
D
The release of ChatGPT has caused more than a little worry about its ability to produce credible pieces of writing. “The College Essay Is Dead, ” some people declared. That’s unlikely. There are obvious workarounds. For example, students wouldn’t benefit from ChatGPT if they were required to write out essays by hand.
A return to handwritten essays could benefit students in a way. For instance, neuroscience research has revealed that the act of handwriting is very different from punching letters on a keyboard. Handwriting requires precise motor skills that stimulate greater activity in a broader group of brain regions when compared with typing and engage the brain in ways that researchers have linked to learning and memory improvements. Handwriting forces those areas responsible for memory and learning to communicate with each other, which helps form networks that facilitate the recall and acquisition of new information.
Much of the research has focused on children or younger students. But there’s evidence that, even for older students and adults, completing assignments in longhand is a more cognitively (认知地) involved process, leading to better processing of ideas and more original work. Meanwhile, research on foreign-language learners has found that handwriting is associated with improvements in some measure of accuracy and comprehension. Handwriting requires you to put a filter on what you’re producing in a way that typing doesn’t. When you’re writing by hand, you need to know what you want to say before you begin. If you don’t, you’ll have to cross things out or start over. Typing on a computer requires far less forethought. It is less challenging for the brain-and challenging the brain is central to education itself.
A return to handwritten essays wouldn’t be easy on teachers, who might have to reduce the length of assignments or allocate (分配) extra class time for completion. They’d also have the burden of reading text that wasn’t neatly turned out by a word processor. But some might find all that preferable to being constantly suspicious (猜疑的) that they’re being outsmarted by a computer program.
When health issues forced the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche to abandon his pen in favor of a typewriter, a change occurred in his writing style, which one scholar later described as a departure from “sustained argument and prolonged reflection” to a “telegram style. ” Our writing tools work on our thoughts. Ensuring that today’s students have more than one writing tool might pay off in ways experts are only beginning to grasp. ChatGPT and other AI-powered technologies will win only if we agree to play on their home territory.
27 How can handwriting benefit students?
A. It enhances brain engagement.
B. It guarantees accurate comprehension.
C. It creates networks for communication.
D. It facilitates the assessment of information.
28. What does the underlined phrase “put a filter on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Carefully screen. B. Passively accept.
C. Objectively assess. D. Gradually discover.
29. What factor may lead teachers to resist the idea of handwritten assignments?
A. The risk of weakened concentration.
B. The fear of being outsmarted by AI.
C. The trouble of marking untidy work.
D. The content of handwritten essays.
30. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A College education will be reformed by ChatGPT
B. Handwriting will replace typing due to ChatGPT
C. Handwritten essays can help teachers defeat ChatGPT
D. College teachers return to longhand to battle ChatGPT

This skill, called emotional intelligence (EI), can make it easier to communicate and connect with people. ____33____ One study found that people who read the Harry Potter novels, which tell stories about humans fighting against the evil, were less likely to behave unfairly towards powerless groups including refugees (难民).
_____34_____ After reading The Boy at the Back of the Class, a story about a boy who is a refugee escaping from the war, students in St Michael’s High School were inspired to do a 10-mile walk for the non-profit organization Refugee Action. Their empathy also stimulated them to raise £1,000 for people who were forced to leave their homes because of war.

B. In a way, all this increases our ability to read well.
C. This theory of EI has been put into practice in schools.
