Hit the ice at the Maggie Daley Park
Winter in Chicago can be an unforgiving time when residents are concerned about the thought of ever leaving their homes. In fact, it can be rather fun, especially if you spend some time ice skating at the Maggie Daley Park. While it’s an inexpensive activity if you rent skates, the savings increase if you bring your own skates.
Price: $16 online, $18 walk-up Monday — Friday, $20 online, $22 walk-up Saturday — Sunday
Wander through forests at the Morton Arboretum
Want to spend an affordable day appreciating nature? Head out to Lisle to explore winding trails and forests, where you’ll find tons of nature-related activities and other outdoor programs. Don’t forget to secure a timed reservation before you head out.

In a study, 152 college students exposed to misinformation read one of two articles intended to give correct and scientifically backed information. Those who read an article that had “just the facts” preserved more misconceptions than those who read an article with a refutation — meaning it specifically pointed out the false claims before presenting the facts.
For this study, researchers first tested what the student participants knew about putting fluoride (氟化物) in water. The students then read two articles: one with false information saying that fluoridation is harmful and the other presenting the scientific ideas that fluoridation is safe and prevents dental disease. The participants all read the same misinformation, but different groups read an article with the correct information either in a traditional “just the facts” style or one that first refuted the misinformation. The study also tested the effects of having the participants read the correct article before, or after, the misinformation.
A post-test revealed that the students still learned under all four conditions — but the group that performed the worst had seen the misinformation followed by a “just the facts” type text. Those who had read the refutation article either before, or after, the misinformation had fewer misconceptions. They also had more positive emotions toward the subject.
With large amounts of information easily available online, it can be hard for many people to sort fact from falsehood. This can cause a problem called “conceptual pollution” — when learning incorrect information gives rise to intervention and confusion in learning the correct information. “Your mind doesn’t discriminate for content. Whether it’s a correct conception or a misconception, it just absorbs it,” Danielson, a psychology researcher, says. Researchers like him are looking for ways to teach science that break through the noise of misinformation. This study and others prove that a refutation approach is prospective. Researchers also perceive the refutational approach works well for topics from physics and chemistry to highly political ones.
8. What do we know about the student participants in the study?
A. They were divided into two groups. B. They got misinformation first.
C. They were shown right information. D. They read the same two articles.
9. In what order did the poorest-performing group read the articles?
A. Misinformation first, then refutation. B. “Just the facts” first, then misinformation.
C. Refutation first, then misinformation. D. Misinformation first, then “just the facts”.
10. What does the underlined word “noise” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Correction. B. Disturbance. C. Occurrence. D. Comprehension.
11. How does the text develop?
A. Fact — Contrast — Explanation — Expectation B. Introduction — Process — Result — Conclusion
C. Background — Problem — Analysis — Solution D. Topic — Classification — Discussion — Outcome
C 9. D 10. B 11. B
根据第二段“For this study, researchers first tested what the student participants knew about putting fluoride ( 氟化物 ) in water. The students then read two articles: one with false information saying that fluoridation is harmful and the other presenting the scientific ideas that fluoridation is safe and prevents dental disease. The participants all read the same misinformation, but different groups read an article with the correct information either in a traditional “just the facts” style or one that first refuted the misinformation.(在这项研究中,研究人员首先测试了学生参与者对将氟化物放入水中的了解。
根据第三段“A post-test revealed that the students still learned under all four conditions — but the group that performed the worst had seen the misinformation followed by a “just the facts” type text.(测试后结果显示,学生在所有四种情况下都有所学习——但表现最差的一组是先看到了错误信息,然后是“仅事实”类型的文本)”可知,表现最差的一组阅读文章的顺序是首先是错误信息,然后才是“事实”。故选D。

This study and others prove that a refutation approach is prospective. Researchers also perceive the refutational approach works well for topics from physics and chemistry to highly political ones.(像他这样的研究人员正在寻找能够突破错误信息干扰的科学教学方法。
D
Traditional methods employed for the diagnosis (诊断) of mental-health conditions require that patients engage in direct communication with a doctor. While these methods appears sensible in theory, such assessments can, in practical terms, extend over a period of several months, and furthermore, the diagnoses are ultimately subject to a degree of subjectivity.
It is precisely for this reason that scientists are actively involved in experimental efforts to automate this diagnostic process. For instance, large language models (LLMs) possess the capacity to analyze literally recorded interviews in search of speech patterns and contextual clues indicating psychological disorders. However, text-based AI has its limitations. Cultural distinction, language barriers, and varying levels of fluency in language can impact the results. It has also been demonstrated that LLMs have a tendency to mirror the linguistic discriminations in society. In one study, an LLM failed to diagnose depression in black patients compared with white patients.
Consequently, the novel methods currently under development do not focus on individual words but on the way those words are spoken. An AI model, for example, is intended to detect slight changes in a patient’s voice. The researchers assume that individuals with depression may possess distinctive ways of speaking that are not very noticeable for the human to detect.
The system uses “pre-training”, a technique by which the model is initially exposed to vast quantities of general speech, to help it recognize complex speech patterns. These patterns might include variations in rhythm, pitch (音高) variability and voice quality that human can rarely catch. This pre-trained acts as a linguistic tuning fork, enabling the system to pick out complex variations in speech that might potentially signal depression, without the necessity of comprehending the words themselves. Subsequently, the researchers adjusted, or “fine-tuned” this general-purpose system specifically for the detection of depression with the aid of recordings of patients with depression. This method was 95% accurate when tasked with categorizing its severity based on one clinical rating extent.
Diagnosis, though valuable, is only the first step. Different people with the same condition often require customized treatments for the symptoms (症状) they find most troubling. The next step for this promising technology seems self-evident—build AI models that can help doctors personalize the treatments they give to patients.
12. What’s the challenge text-based AI faces in Paragraph 2?
A. It cannot deeply analyze speech patterns.
B. It cannot reflect linguistic discriminations.
C. It cannot correctly recognize contextual clues.
D. It cannot avoid influences from linguistic factors.
13. Why is there pre-training on vast quantities of general speech?
A. To recognize complex word patterns. B. To pick out variations in symptoms.
C. To identify complicated voice patterns. D. To understand the words themselves.
14. How will the AI-based technology further develop?
A. It will promote its accuracy. B. It will offer tailored treatments.
C. It will diversify its functions. D. It will provide personal diagnosis.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Promising AI Treatment B. Diagnosing Mental Disorders with AI
C. Language Models with AI D. Applying AI to Mental Health Treatment
D 13. C 14. B 15. B

根据第四段“The system uses “pre-training”, a technique by which the model is initially exposed to vast quantities of general speech, to help it recognize complex speech patterns.(该系统使用“预训练”技术,通过这种技术,该模型最初暴露于大量的一般语音中,以帮助它识别复杂的语音模式)”可推知,对大量的一般语言进行预训练是为了识别复杂的语音模式。
根据最后一段“Different people with the same condition often require customized treatments for the symptoms (症状) they find most troubling. The next step for this promising technology seems self-evident — build AI models that can help doctors personalize the treatments they give to patients.(患有相同疾病的不同患者往往需要对他们最困扰的症状进行个性化治疗。

故填Although/Though/While。
故填that。
not stymie China’s innovation progress和instead will accelerate Chinese enterprises’ efforts to achieve technological breakthroughs之间是转折关系,应用连词but连接。故填but。
DeepSeek-R1, an open-source AI model, performs as well as ____ (lead) US models in tasks like math and coding.以及下文it does this with far less cost and computing power可知,前后句之间是递进关系,应用副词moreover“而且”,句首单词,首字母大写。
given proper platforms to innovate是前文的条件,本空引导条件状语从句,应用连词if“如果”。故填 if。
故填With。

In the small town of Riverdale, life was never easy for 17-year-old Emily. Her family had faced financial struggles since her father’s business went down, leaving them in debt. To make matters worse, Emily's mother had fallen ill, adding medical bills to their list of concerns. Despite these challenges, Emily refused to let adversity define her. She worked tirelessly after school to support her family and kept up with her studies, determined to secure a scholarship for college.
One day, as she was browsing the internet for potential scholarship opportunities, Emily came across an article about a local charity event that offered a full scholarship to the winner of a talent competition. Without hesitation, she decided to enter the talent competition. Emily was an accomplished pianist, having practiced piano for hours every day throughout her childhood. She poured her heart into practicing for the competition, hoping it would be her ticket to a better future.
On the day of the competition, Emily felt a mix of nerves and excitement. She watched as other contestants showcased their talents—some sang, others danced, and a few of the contestants played instruments. When it was her turn, Emily took a deep breath and began to play. Her fingers moved gracefully over the keys, and the melody filled the room. She was nearly absorbed in the pieces that she had practiced hundreds of times. As the last note echoed, the audience erupted in applause.
The judges discussed for a while before finally announcing the winner. To Emily’s dismay, she didn’t win the scholarship. The judges praised her performance but said they were looking for something “different” this year. Emily left the event feeling defeated, wondering when she would ever escape her difficult circumstances.
Despite not winning the scholarship, Emily realized that sometimes, when one door closes, another opens. Her perseverance and determination had led her to a path she never could have imagined.

Emily was overjoyed and gratefully accepted the judge’s offer.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As she walked home, lost in thought, a stranger approached her. Emily’s heart raced as she tried to figure out what the stranger wanted. The man introduced himself as Mr. Thompson, one of the judges at the competition. He told Emily that although she hadn’t won, her performance had deeply moved him. Mr. Thompson owned a music school and offered Emily a part-time job teaching piano to children. He believed in her talent and wanted to help her pursue her dream.
Emily was overjoyed and gratefully accepted the judge's offer. She began teaching at the music school, where she discovered a passion for mentoring young musicians. In time, Emily’s reputation grew, and more students sought her out. With the income from her new job and the money she saved from winning various local competitions, Emily was able to help her family pay off their debts and cover her mother’s medical expenses. Emily always remembered the lessons she learned during those challenging times—that sometimes, the greatest victory comes from the most difficult battle.

B It cannot reflect linguistic discriminations.
A It will promote its accuracy. B. It will offer tailored treatments.
C. It will diversify its functions. D. It will provide personal diagnosis.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Promising AI Treatment B. Diagnosing Mental Disorders with AI
C. Language Models with AI D. Applying AI to Mental Health Treatment
