In July 2024, the Beijing Central Axis became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is now China􀆳s 59th World Heritage Site. Based on traditional Chinese culture, the Beijing Central Axis has a group of buildings and historical sites that shape Beijing􀆳s old city. This axis is 7.8 kilometres long. It extends from north to south in central Beijing. This area includes 15 key parts, such as the Bel and Drum Towers in the north and Yongding Gate in the south. The building of the Beijing Central Axis started in the Yuan Dynasty(1271-1368) and continued during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). It stil plays a great role in Beijing􀆳s development today. According to Lyu Zhou, director of the National Heritage Centre at Tsinghua University, the idea behind the Beijing Central Axis dates back to the Kaogongji(《考工记》), written before 221 BC. This book explains how to plan a capital city. The Beijing Central Axis shows the traditional Chinese ideas of zhong and he. For example, the Forbidden City was at the centre to show the power of emperors. People put other buildings around it for a feeling of harmony. “Beijing􀆳s special and great order is created by this central axis,” said Liang Sicheng(1901- 1972), a famous Chinese architect. 1. It is bad for animals,” said Lauren Boccardi, an expert. In the sea, turtles and fish can get stuck(被困住的) in different plastic(塑料), and birds may end up eating plastic by mistake. Here are some ways for you and your family to deal with the rubbish problem. Think before you buy. When shopping for clothes, try to buy only what you need. For example, before you buy a jacket, ask yourself, “Do I need it? Could I borrow a jacket or buy a second-hand one?” One idea is to go shopping at second-hand stores, where you may find good clothes at low prices. Cut down food waste(浪费). The food you throw away can end up in landfils(垃圾填埋 场). They take up much space and cut down natural resources(资源). One way to waste less food is to buy a pantry(食品贮藏柜). While making a shopping list, check your cabinets(储 藏柜). Use what you have first, before it goes bad or ends up in the rubbish. Have a check before throwing rubbish. Put plastic caps on bottles. This way, if these things end up in the environment, they won􀆳t do bad to animals. (素材来源: The Week Junior) 根据短文内容,回答下列问题。 1. Where does much rubbish end up? 2. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 2? 3. How can we cut down food waste? 4. What should we do before we throw away a bottle? 5. Asmaa Al-Alak grew up in Iraq where her grandmother, a seamstress(dressmaker), taught her to sew. When she was 14, Al- Alak came to the UK and later studied medicine in Cardiff. Yet her passion for needlework never left her. One of the judges caled her final design “a feat of genius”. It was a dress that could be transformed from a blue outfit into a green balgown through a system of hooks.“Among everything I have done in the last 45 years of my life—this is the best,” she said. 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 􀥈 Unit 1 The secrets of happiness 14 (二) 狗会记住自己的玩具 (2025·原创)Some dogs have so many toys that it can be difficult for their owners(主人) to folow them. There is something special about dogs that might surprise you. According to a study, some of our four-legged friends have the ability to remember the names of their toys. 1. The study involved(涉 及) five dogs. Researchers firstly taught the dogs the names of 12 new toys. After a month, the researchers tested the dogs to see if they could remember the names(they could). 2. Then the owners took the toys out of hiding. They put them on the floor alongside some other toys. The researchers watched with cameras while the owners said the names of the earlier hidden toys and asked the dogs to get them. 3. Some of the dogs could get the right toy 60% of the time. If the dogs forgot the names of their toys, the researchers would believe that they could make the right choices(选择) 20.4% of the time—clearly by chance. 4. Lead researcher Shany Dror told reporters that the study showed that the dogs kept the names of their toys in their long- term memory(长期记忆). The research team said that while some dogs can learn the names of objects, it stil isn􀆳t clear why others cannot.
