Most animal shelters provide volunteer opportunities. They need volunteers for cleaning kennels, feeding, walking dogs and so on. Usually, as long as the child has signed permission from their parents or guardian, they can volunteer as young as 14, even younger if their parents bring them and supervise their volunteer time. Tutoring If your child is a good student and enjoys school or even just a specific subject, volunteering to tutor lower grade students is a great opportunity. Helping struggling students catch up or grasp a concept can make your friend feel great. It is an easy and convenient way to get your teen volunteering after school. And we suggest the age should be older than 14. Youth sports Another great opportunity to get your kid volunteering is in sports. If your child has years of experience with any sport, they can most likely find an opportunity to help out younger kids. Most youth sports need teenage volunteers to be an assistant coach or a referee. Teenagers can volunteer in maintenance to spruce up (使整洁) fields, or in cleanup after game days. The age of volunteers is required beyond 14. Contact any local sports league to get specifics on where they may be needing volunteers. Service projects for teens Cleaning up a common space such as a park or walking trail is a great way to get active in the community, and your teen can even include their friends in their volunteer effort. More detail projects may include something like building a shade structure at a local playground or planting trees. We suggest the age of the kids should be older than 14. 1. Of the following volunteer opportunities, which is suitable for kids under 14? A. Tutoring. B. Service projects for teens. C. Youth sports. D. Animal shelter volunteering. 2. What can kids do when volunteering in sports? A. They can teach younger players. B. They can give assistance to referees. C. They can become professional coaches. D. They are welcome to visit local sports league. 3. Who is the passage intended for? A. Kids’ parents. B. Sports workers. C. Animal lovers. D. School teachers. B With the ocean covering more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said scientists and researchers had depended on sonar (声呐) technologies to understand and map the sea floor which had charted only about 10% of the world’s ocean. For the ocean and coastal waters in the US, the number is just around 35%. We know less about our planet’s ocean than what we know about the far side of the moon or the surface of Mars. Part of the reason for the lack of observation is the challenge of powering an underwater camera. Researchers have used ships to recharge cameras or observed with a camera tied to a ship to solve the issue, which is expensive and unsuitable for long-term observations. Recently, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken a major step to iron out this problem by developing a battery-free, wireless underwater camera that could harvest energy underwater on its own for long periods. To keep power consumption as low as possible, the researchers used off-the-shelf, ultra-low-power imaging sensors. The device takes color photos, even in dark underwater environments, and sends image data wirelessly through the water. The camera is powered by sound. It changes mechanical energy from sound waves traveling through water into electrical energy that powers its imaging and communications equipment. After getting and encoding image data, the camera also uses sound waves to send the data to a receiver that reconstructs the image. Those sound waves could come from any source, like a passing ship or marine life. As it doesn’t need a power source, the camera could run for weeks on end before getting it back, enabling scientists to search remote parts of the ocean for new species. Now that researchers have demonstrated a working prototype (原型), they plan to enhance the device so it is practical in real-world settings. For future application, these cameras may be used to take images of ocean pollution and create more accurate models to monitor climate change to better understand how climate change impacts the underwater world, and advance various undersea scientific fields. 4. What do the data in paragraph 1 mainly show? A. Undersea exploration is poor in the US. B. Much of the planet’s ocean remains unexplored. C. The mapping of the sea floor is time-consuming. D. Technology development matters a lot to sea observation. 5. What limits the researchers’ undersea exploration according to the text? A. The complexity of the sea environment. B. The concern about potential sea pollution. C. The shortage of investment in ocean exploration. D. The inability to effectively power underwater cameras. 6. What does the underlined phrase “iron out” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Overcome. B. Face. C. Analyze. D. Illustrate. 7. Which of the following can best describe the MIT underwater camera? A. Secure and stable. B. Expensive but effective. C. Impractical but advanced. D. Self-sufficient and energy-saving. C You are more likely to think of the information that is repeated to be true than the information you hear only once. You assume that if people are going to put in effort to repeat a statement, this reflects the truth of the statement. Simply repeating some pieces of information does not actually make it true, but this tendency — also called the illusory (错觉的) truth effect — is a prejudice that can lead you to draw the wrong conclusions. An important step in decreasing the negative influence of prejudices in thinking is to be aware of them. To what degree are people aware of the illusory truth effect? This question was addressed in the journal Cognition by Simone Mattavelli. In the critical study, participants did two sessions. In one session, they read about a study in which people were exposed to trivia (琐事) statements and then were asked whether both statements they had heard before as well as new statements were true. They were asked to predict the percentage of each statement that would be judged as true. At another session a few days later, participants actually performed this study, reading a set of 20 trivia statements and then judging the truth of 40 statements, half of which were the ones they saw earlier and the other half of which were new. This study replicated the illusory truth effect. People were more likely to judge statements they had seen before as true than statements that were new. Two interesting findings emerged from the predictions. First, participants tended to underestimate the size of the illusory truth effect for everyone. Second, participants were more wrong when predicting their own performance compared to predicting the performance of another person. This work is particularly important in light of the amount of misinformation presented in social media. Many people are influencing public opinions about political and economic matters. Social media websites with misinformation will lead people to believe this information is true just because it is stated. 8. What is Simone’s study mainly about concerning the illusory truth effect? A. People’s awareness of it. B. People’s reaction to it. C. Its causes. D. Its process. 9. How did the participants engage in the first session of the study? A. Reading, repeating and judging. B. Reading, assessing and forecasting. C. Recording, judging and predicting. D. Predicting, observing and reflecting. 10. What does the underlined word “replicate” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Correspond with. B. Be contrary to. C. Put forward. D. Account for. 11. What is the author’s attitude toward Simone’s study? A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. D The Travels of a T-shirt in the Global Economy is a highly-praised and prize winning book that highlights the globalization debates and reveals the key factors to make global business happen. Following a T-shirt’s life story from a Texas cotton field to a Chinese factory and back to a U. S. storefront before arriving at the used clothing market in Africa, the book uncovers a wealth of interesting questions about politics, trade, economics, ethics (道德学), and the impact of history on today’s business landscape. Pietra Rivoli’s story began at George Town University in Washington where she worked as a professor of finance and international business. One day, she encountered a student seminar about globalized economy, where one student illustrated his views by giving the simple and accessible examples of T-shirts. She became inspired so one day she bought an ordinary T-shirt randomly for $5.99, deciding to look into how the process worked, which triggered the whole story. She travelled thousands of miles and across three continents to find out who did make these T-shirts that we all wear without giving a second thought about the journey each T-shirt had to go through to make it to the United States. She reached readers by using this simple, everyday T-shirt as a camera through which to explore all aspects of globalization in a historical context. The story is told in an interesting and efficient way to achieve its purpose of educating on global economy. The language used is simple for anyone interested in reading to understand the complex world of international trade. The book is written professionally from an economist’s point of view. Rivoli uses a neutral tone, which is uncommon among economic writers and policymakers. She says, “I have written this book not to defend a position, but first of all, to tell a story; not to convey morals but to discover them, and simply to see where the story leads”. 12. What is the usual journey does a T-shirt go? A. USA-Africa-USA-China. B. USA-China- USA-Africa. C. China- USA-China-Africa. D. USA-China-Africa-USA. 13. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The travel of a T-shirt. B. The impact of the book. C. The wisdom of the writer. D. The background of the book. 14. What role did the T-shirt play in the book? A. An example to show complex concepts. B. An effective way to inspire the students. C. A main contributor to global cooperation. D. An important way to earn a living globally. 15. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage? A. To show where a T-shirt goes. B. To praise an insightful professor. C. To introduce a great economy book. D. To explain what global economy is. 第二节 (共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Around the globe, about 1 in 4 adults says they’re lonely. My father had drowned in Pitt Lake five years earlier. Because Dad had no pension or benefits, there was not much money; we went on social assistance. Looking back, I realize what Mum went through a sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles(鞋底) were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. This was bread deep-fried in lard(猪油). Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn’t look like we’d be in our current house much longer. Rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be forced out after Christmas. The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. An inspector came to our house and search edit thoroughly to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden away. When he didn’t find any, he issued the cheque to Mum. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us there would be no Christmas gifts. Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots—boots with no cardboard in the soles. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, and cost $23. The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. But on the way to the bus stop I noticed da house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized that we had no lights, no decorations and no Christmas goodies. I also knew we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner. But at least there would be French toast. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 As I continued walking, I began to feel confused. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The bus drove off without me, and I stood alone in a daze, feeling as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2024~2025学年(下)高二3月份质量监测 英语 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题:每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1. Thinking of this, the idea of buying the beautiful boots I had wanted for so long didn’t seem as appealing as before. As I reached the bus stop, the driver opened the door, waiting for me to get on. I stood there for what seemed like a century, until finally the driver asked, “Son, are you getting on this bus or not?” I finally burst out without hesitation, “No, thanks.” Paragraph 2: The bus drove off without me, and I stood alone in a daze, feeling as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I knew what I had to do next. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. I went to buy a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas decorations. I spent every coin of my hard-earned money. Once I got home, I knocked on the door. I could not wait to see my mother’s face! When Mum opened the door, and saw me returning with a full load, she just stood there, too stunned to speak. Holding back the tears, I exclaimed excitedly, “Merry Christmas, Mother!” 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
