will send giant pandas Yun Chuan and Xin Bao to
the San Diego Zoo in the United States, which is a
symbol of a new 10-year period of international

Passage
人与社会———科学与技术
最轻的元素———氢
Hydrogen is the lightest element in the
world, and theres more hydrogen in the world
than you think — for example, water has hydrogen
elements. Some think it could be a big deal in the
energy industry. It burns easily and can power
things that need a lot of heat. And it doesnt make
CO2 that warms the climate.
How can we use hydrogen?
Hydrogen has many uses, from making
plastics to purifying (炼制) oil. When used as
energy, it burns cleanly and can replace fossil
fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions (温室气
体排放). Some companies, like Cleveland-Cliffs
in the US, started to use hydrogen as a fuel source,
with plans to mix it with methane (甲烷).
In this way, the fuel can burn greenhouse gas
and leave no pollution. Hydrogen can also make
electricity through chemical reactions (化学反
应) with oxygen. The only byproduct is water —
its a very clean resource.
Why isnt everyone using it?
Hydrogen comes in different forms, and its
cleanliness depends on how its made. Although
hydrogen is naturally found in the universe, the
one we need for energy is not common. Companies
have to get hydrogen from other sources, mainly
from fossil fuels, which often leads to pollution.
However, the cleanest, “ greenest” way to
make hydrogen is possible, but very expensive.
People arent ready to pay a lot of money for this.
Besides, people wont buy hydrogen-powered
68
equipment until a steady (稳定的) supply of
hydrogen is available.

Passage[2024 成都改编]
人与自我———生活与学习
Taking a great photo is not easy and there are
lots of things to consider. How do you choose and
organize your subjects within your photo? 1
Here are some tips from the art, design and
photography experts.
Find a focus. When taking a picture, ask
yourself, “Whats the focus?” If you are taking a
picture of a crowded street, choose a subject that
draws your eye. 2 If its a landscape photo of
a field, the focus could be a big tree.
3 Its a bit boring to put your subject
right in the middle. Place it a little on the left or
right of your photo. Imagine your photo is divided
into a three-by-three grid (网格) of boxes. One
of the corners of your central square is where your
focus should be.
Create colorful contrasts (对比). Color in a
picture is more easily noticed if it has a contrast.
4 They will stand out more if they are taken
beside a grey stone wall, or photographed against
a bright blue sky.
Try different angles. To add more interest to a
photo, try taking it from different angles. This means
you need to move around, taking photos from
different sides, from above or from below. For
example, if you photograph a building from a plane it
looks tiny but a photo of the same building looking
up from the street makes it look huge. 5
Practice makes perfect. Try everything for
the perfect shot.
A. It can tell a different story.
B. Remember the rule of thirds.
C. Think about focus, color, light and more.
D. It could be a person wearing bright colors.
E. If you take a picture of yellow flowers, dont
fill your picture with them.

Passage 1[2024 凉山州改编]
人与社会———历史、社会与文化
拱手礼
Different countries have different manners
69
about social situations. In Mexico, people shake
hands when they meet for the first time. In Brazil,
people sometimes kiss. In Korea, people usually
bow. Do you know Chinese fist and palm salute
(拱 手 礼 )? It is one of the classic greeting
manners in China. 1
The occasions of making fist and palm salute
For centuries, China has been known as a “Liyi
Zhibang”. Nowadays, Chinese usually shake hands
when meeting others, but sometimes they also make
fist and palm salute. 2 People make fist and
palm salute when they visit someone during the
Spring Festival or attend someones wedding
ceremony, birthday party and so on.
The history of fist and palm salute
3 It started in the West Zhou Dynasty. If
people met strangers, they would prepare for a fight
if necessary, and hands were always ready for
holding weapons (武器). Holding hands together
pointed to themselves was a meaning of expressing
kindness. Later it became one of the traditional
Chinese manners when meeting each other.
4
How do you make fist and palm salute
properly? First, stand at attention. Then, if you
are a man, right-hand half-fist, and then left-hand
hold the right-hand in front of your chest. For a
woman, left-hand half-fist, then right-hand put
the left-hand on the top. Next, watch each other,
raise both hands to brow (额头) and bend down.
5 Also, you could say some lucky greeting
words to each other three times.
A. Now lets learn more about it.
B. The way to make fist and palm salute
C. When and where do people use it?
D. Finally, shake hands towards each other three
times.
E. Fist and palm salute has a history of more than
3,000 years.
Passage 2
人与自然———宇宙探索
月球时区
What time is it? The answer you give can be
different. 1 But how could you tell the time if
you arent anywhere on the Earth?
Scientists are now thinking of creating a lunar
(月球的) time zone. 2 At the moment,
astronauts are using time zones of their own
countries. But there could be safety problems
caused by the differences in time-telling.
Setting up a lunar time zone is not easy.
3 Since gravity is weaker in the Moon, clocks
run a bit faster there. After 24 hours, a lunar
clock would be 56 microseconds ahead of a clock
on the Earth. Another point to consider is that a
full day on the Earth is about 24 hours between
two sunsets. 4 This means that lunar nights
can be around two weeks long. With all this to
think about, scientists need to decide whether it
would be better to follow a time zone on the Earth,
or for the Moon to have its own special zone.
5 For example, who should be
responsible for keeping the time zone going? And
how can it be made practical for astronauts to use?
There are more countries planning Moon trips
in the future. The idea of creating a time zone on
the Moon would make these easier.
A. Scientists must consider other problems, too.
B. Gravity influences how quickly or slowly time
passes.
C. Because you are in different Earths time zones
(时区).
D. While on the Moon, it is nearly 709 hours,
about 29. 5 Earth days.
E. They believe it would be better for astronauts
to communicate by using Moon Time.
