The ostrich is the largest living member of the bird family. It is a queer-looking (模样古怪的) creature which lives in the South African desert lands. Although it is a bird, its wings are useless for flying, and are now only used as a means of balance when the bird is running.
An ostrich can run very quickly and has been known to reach a speed of twenty-five miles per hour. Its strong legs can carry it quicker than the fastest horse and at full speed the ostrich can cover twenty-five feet in a single stride (一大步).
The bird lives on the coarsest (粗糙的) of desert plants, snakes, lizards and small birds and insects, and it also swallows small stones which help to digest its food.
Its nest is just a hole in the sand and as many as forty eggs have been found in one nest. The eggs are large and weigh as much as three pounds. They are equal in size to about three dozen hen’s eggs. The male bird assists in hatching (孵化) the eggs, but sometimes the eggs are just covered with sand, and left to be hatched by the sun.
Ostriches are kept on great farms in South Africa. The great value of these birds is in their beautiful feathers. The feathers of the male bird are more valuable than those of the female bird. The feathers are clipped from the wings and the tails once every nine months and this causes the ostrich no more pain than we feel when we cut our nails.
