On a bright September day in the French Alps in 2022, John McAvoy was 38 kilometres into a very exhausting ultramarathon through rough mountain paths. Battling tiredness, he pushed his body and mind through the final leg of the race. With the finish arch in the famous town of Chamonix just four kilometres away and the cloud-topped peak of Mont Blanc high over him, McAvoy welled up with emotion.
In that moment, he felt so free and alive. It was quite the opposite from where his life had been a decade before. He had just been released from prison after serving a 10-year sentence.
Now 40 years old, McAvoy has spent the last 10 years rebuilding his life from one of crime to one with purpose. It was on this day, while running the ultramarathon, that he realized how impactful conquering (征服) this mountain run could be for inner-city kids like him. After all, sport had helped him live a normal life again and open up his world. It could do the same for others.
With the help of Youth Beyond Borders, McAvoy started the Alpine Run Project, which recently led 12 disadvantaged British young people through their own Mont Blanc races. The participants, from refugees (难民) to young reformed criminals and those who grew up in Children’s home, were matched with coaches, consultants and physiotherapists. After a six-month training program, the youth travelled to the Alps to meet up with McAvoy for their race.
McAvoy says the highlight of this project for him was watching Yasmin Mahamud, a 20-year-old refugee from Syria, run through the finish arch and into the arms of her new friends. It was a life-changing high for Mahamud, too-inspiring her to keep running, take up martial arts and go to university to study physiotherapy.
“It changed my point of view on life, says Mahamud. Pushing herself to complete the race gave her a brief experience of her own potential through hard work and devotion.” I will always be thankful to John for giving me this opportunity and guidance.
4. How did McAvoy feel before the finish arch?
A. He felt totally collapsed. B. He was peaceful and hopeful.
C. He was satisfied with his pace. D. He felt as if completely reborn.
5. What can we learn about McAvoy from paragraph 3?
A. He was a builder 10 years ago. B. He realized the importance of sport.
C. He ran to make up for his past wrongs. D. He had sympathy for the inner-city children.
6. Who most probably took part in the Mont Blanc races?
A. A running coach. B. A travel lover. C. A homeless teenager. D. A skilled athlete.
7. What message does McAvoy’s story convey?
A. Live for the moment. B. Dream big and climb high.
C. After the storm comes the rainbow. D. Run after the light and become the light.
C
The new radio programme from Self-help expert Glennon Doyle unexpectedly disturbed me. In a session of We Can Do Hard Things, she focuses on boundaries and their importance to our mental happiness. I heartily agree with her, because saying a polite but firm “no” is one of the basics for a happy life. I was, however, interested when she raised the idea that perhaps, as well as learning when to confirm our boundaries, we also need to stretch them. When does a boundary become a cage that locks us away?
Isn’t it always the case that just as you think you’ve got an area of life nailed; somebody comes along to show you that that’s not the case? As I listened, I started to see boundaries that might cause more problems than they were solving.
There was the work boundary that said that unless a project fell exactly into my topics, I wouldn’t take it-which meant that I turned down work that was otherwise interesting and rewarding.
There was the boundary that said I wasn’t to buy anything until I’d reached my savings goal-which resulted in me having to restart my laptop 20 times a day.
And then there was a boundary around relationships that set out exactly how I should be treated and what I wanted in them. Helpful to some extent, it blocked me from allowing someone to express their love for me, even if it wasn’t quite what I had predicted.
Had I been doing boundaries wrong all the time? Did I need to figure them all out again? I’ve spent the past few weeks looking at the boundaries I’ve secretly put in place, and I’ve let myself lower some that have been my protection over the years. Then I’ve come to the conclusion that, when it comes to boundaries, I’m a beginner again, and that’s fine. In fact, being back at the beginning is a blessing because it means there are still lessons to be learned and adventures to be had and that is something for which I can only be grateful.
8. What has really interested the author in Glennon Doyle’s programme?
A. The importance of confirming our boundaries.
B. The benefits of boundaries to our happiness.
C. The urgency of maintaining our boundaries.
D. The necessity of reassessing our boundaries.
9. Which statement on boundaries will the author agree with?
A. We should favour savings goals over boundaries.
B. Boundaries tend to keep us from potential friends
C. Boundaries are very likely to relieve boredom at work.
D. We should stick to boundaries despite inconvenience.
10. How did the author feel about boundaries after the?
A. Relaxed. B. Depressed. C. Pressured. D. Amused.
11. What is probably the best title for the passage?
A. Just when you think you’ve got things sorted. B. Just where you believe there’s no way out
C How can we live a life without boundaries? D. How do we become victims of boundaries?
D
Pushed by the rapid pace of today’s fashion industry, it’s no wonder many clothes buyers find themselves with a “closet (衣橱) of regrets”. All the clothes that don’t get worn can hang heavy on a consumer’s mind until finally thrown away. The trouble is, “There’s no ‘away’ for your clothes,” says Maxine Bédat, author of a 2021 book, Unraveled: The Life and Death of a Garment, and an activist trying to change the industry’s wasteful ways.
A few statistics tell the story. Fashion is responsible for about 10% of the carbon emissions (排放物) that are tipping our planet toward climate disaster. It produces 20% of all industrial water pollution. And it creates unimaginable quantities of rubbish, with about a garbage truck of clothes burnt or buried in a landfill every second.
Although some companies have voluntarily tried to minimize their environmental and social impact, little progress has been made. So, a bill known as the New York Fashion Act was introduced. It would help consumers better understand the impact of their purchases and require every large multinational fashion name operating in the state to map their global supply chains, disclose their environmental and social impacts, and set targets to cut emissions. Failure to meet the targets could bring a 2% fine on annual turnover.
However, the bill is pro-business, argues Ms. Bédat, who worked with the bill’s co-sponsors to craft the measure, because it would level the playing field for companies to operate at the same environmental standards.
Ms. Bédat is looking beyond the “more” of fashion to how people value their clothes. Her book closes with a vision of a future when “we will love our clothes because we have seized control of our own attention and removed the noise in our inboxes and on our social media channels that had taken our attention from our true needs and desires. And we bought them not to fill other holes in our lives, but from an aware and informed mindset.” That could be just enough to clear out anyone’s “closet of regrets.”
12. What does the underlined word “story” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Regrets left by over-consumption, B. Worries generated by abandoning clothes.
C. Anxiety produced by falling behind the trend. D. Problems caused by the fast-paced fashion industry,
13. What does the New York Fashion Act aim to achieve?
A. Boost sales for fashion companies.
B. Regulate global fashion supply chains,
C. Raise environmental awareness of buyers and producers.
D. Limit the expansion of the fashion companies in New York.
14. What does Bédat think of the bill to the fashion companies?
A. Fair. B. Costly. C. Complex. D. Demanding.
15. How can the “closet of regrets” be reduced according to Bédat?
A. Follow trends and buy more clothes. B. Value needs and make wise purchases.
C. Plan budgets and shop eco-consciously. D. Stress functionality and cut down on buying.

There are many reasons why some cats are bad-tempered. It’s commonly believed that their temperament can be influenced by the way they are born or raised. _____16_____ According to veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren, the problem can generally be solved, but you’ll need to look for underlying issues.
Changes in a cat’s behaviour can often be explained by a health problem. Pain can cause cats to behave differently. It’s easy to mistake a problem as behavioural, which in fact is medical. Should you observe a significant change in your cat’s behaviour, then a visit to the vet is the best place to start. _____17_____ Also hiding and avoiding being touched. Be sure to report all changes to your vet. There are many health problems that can be readily treated to ease symptoms and pain for your cat.
It pays to remember that cats don’t like to share or queue. Sharing of ‘resources’ such as litter trays and foodbowls can cause stress and anxiety for many cats. It’s always a good idea to provide each cat with their own litter box, food, water bowls and bed. A lack of space to hide from or avoid other cats, competition for territory and lack of individual attention can also add to household friction. ____18____
Moving to a new house, the arrival of a new baby, new pets and other types of change can seriously impact cat behaviour. Cats are creatures of habit and tend to be territorial. _____19_____ Try to keep your cat’s environment as calm as possible and ensure there are places where they feel safe.
_____20_____ These are often cats that received limited socialisation with humans when they were kittens. These cats do best in a quiet household without children and need understanding and patience to help build their confidence.
A. Some cats simply do not like being touched and handled.
B. Watch out for changes in eating, drinking or litter-box habits.
C. When your cat seems lonely, you can hold it gently in your arms.
D. If so, offering the cat a high place to sit, such as a climbing tree, can be helpful.
E. So a change in routine may cause them to react, including withdrawal or aggression.
F. Don’t forget their incredible sense of smell, which is a useful tool of communication.
G. In fact, even the sweetest cats can suddenly become bad-tempered and behave out of character.

As we sped away from Konglor Cave on our trusty motorbike, the sun was beating down like crazy in central Laos(老挝) at midday. We could still feel the coolness of the cave on our skin as we made our way back to Thakhek, where we had a flight booked for the next day. But little did we know that just about fifteen minutes after passing a tiny town on the dust y road, something unexpected was waiting for us.
All of a sudden, our motorbike stopped working as a result of a broken fuel line and we found that we were in the middle of a deserted road with no people in sight. As the minutes dragged on and on with no cars passing by, panic started to set in. But we knew despair wouldn't help us get out of this mess.
Gathering our courage we all agreed to take turns to push the motorbike back towards the town we had passed earlier. Since we didn't have a map and were unsure about how far the town in our intended direction was, this seemed to be our best option. It was challenging to push in that heat, our clothes sticking to us and dust getting everywhere. Our feet were killing us too. As we continued pushing the motorbike under the sun, the weight of the motorbike seemed to increase with each step.
The dusty road stretched endlessly before us, disappearing into the horizon (地平线). We had no choice but to hope that the town was not too far away. We encouraged one another with words of support and occasional laughter to lighten the mood. However, as time ticked by, it became obvious that this journey would test not only our physical strength but also our mental endurance. Doubts began to creep into our minds—what if there were no towns nearby? What if we ended up going in circles?
Just when we were about to lose hope, an old dusty truck appeared on the horizon.

D 5. B 6. C 7. D

B. Just where you believe there’s no way out
C. How can we live a life without boundaries? D. How do we become victims of boundaries?
D 9. B 10. A 11. A

D 13. C 14. A 15. B

that’s why...
故填was introduced。
故填to have been trained。
故填where。
故填a。
故填how。

Gathering our courage, we all agreed to take turns to push the motorbike back towards the town we had passed earlier.

As we left the repair shop in town, the truck driver refused to accept the money I offered him
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Just when we were about to lose hope, an old dusty truck appeared on the horizon. A wave of relief washed over me when it stopped next to us. After we explained our situation with gestures to the truck driver, he rearranged items at the back of the truck for our motorbike. We squeezed into the truck and headed towards the nearest town. The ride was a bit rough, but it was filled with joy as we exchanged smiles with the kind-hearted driver. Upon arrival in town, he guided us to a small repair shop, where a skilled mechanic worked for nearly two hours until our motorbike worked smoothly again.
As we left the repair shop in town, the truck driver refused to accept the money I offered him. He made it clear through his gestures that he did not expect anything in return for helping us out. To convey my heartfelt gratitude, I pressed my hands together and bowed deeply in the Lao gesture of blessing. His eyes gleamed with joy as we bid farewell. From that day on, this motorbike has often reminded me that even in tough and uncertain times, there are always moments of unexpected kindness just waiting to be discovered.
