People usually wash their produce before eating to remove some remains from pesticides (农药). But are your fruits and vegetables really clean enough to eat? Now 14-year-old Sirish Subash from Georgia has won the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge for developing an AI-based handheld tool that is very accurate in finding pesticide residues (残留物).
The ninth grader at the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology in Snellville has received the title “America’s Top Young Scientist”, according to a press release from the 3M Company.
Now in its 17th year, the challenge supports middle school students to think creatively and apply STEM principles to discover real-world solutions. When the finalists were chosen, they were paired with a 3M scientist who guided them over the summer to help transform their ideas from just concepts into models. Sirish spent four months competing against nine other finalists and secured his win at the final challenge events at 3M’s global headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Sirish’s journey to winning the award came from watching his mother wash vegetables and fruits every day and caution him to always do so. He wondered whether washing actually made a difference.
Since 70 percent of produce in the US has pestioide residues that are linked to illnesses like cancer and Alzheimer’s, it’s very important to know if the fruits and vegetables are safe to eat. That’s what PestiSCAND is designed to do. The device works by shining light on the surface of the produce and measuring the wavelengths that bounce back. Sirish has tested the device on more than 12,000 food samples including strawberries, apples, and tomatoes.
PestiSCAND uses a sensor and an AI-based processor to achieve an accuracy of over 85 percent. Sirish aims at making this technology widely accessible so that consumers will be able to make safe food choices. But he still believes people should wash their produce anyway. He plans to use the $25,000 prize from the competition to help fund his educational goal of attending MIT.
4. Why was Sirish awarded “America’s Top Young Scientist”?
A. He developed a new kind of pesticide. B. He invented a smart pesticide detector.
C. He improved an AI-based handheld tool. D. He found a way to remove pesticide residues.
5. What inspired Sirish to make his achievement?
A. His interest in the application of AI technology. B. His teacher’s guidance on scientific research.
C. His family’s daily routine. D. His ambition to win a competition.
6. Which of the following can best describe Sirish?
A. Curious and creative. B. Clever and courageous.
C. Confident and knowledgeable. D. Devoted and responsible.
7. What does the text want to tell us?
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. A good beginning is half done.
C. Achievements are not about age. D. Many hands make light work.
C
This week Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy released a warning about the risks that social media presents to the mental health of children and teenagers. Adolescent (青少年的) mental health has been declining for years, and an increasing amount of research suggests that social media platforms could be partially to blame. But experts continue to debate just how much impact they have.
Numerous studies demonstrate that adolescent rates of depression, anxiety and loneliness have skyrocketed in the U. S. and elsewhere since around the time that smartphones and social media became ever-present.
Yet the role social media plays has been widely debated. Some researchers have sounded the alarm, arguing that social media provides the most credible explanation for problems such as enhanced teen loneliness. Other researchers have been sitting on the fence. In 2019, Jeff Hanceck, founding director of the Social Media Lab at Stanford University, and his colleagues completed an analysis of 226 scientific papers dating back to 2006. They concluded that social media was associated with not only a slight increase in depression and anxiety but also improvements in feelings of belonging and connectedness.
Some recent studies have attempted to figure out the link between social media and mental health, asking, for instance, whether social media use is causing depression or whether people are being more active on social media because they’re depressed. In an attempt to present evidence, Massachusetts Institute of Technology economist Alexey Makarin and two of his colleagues conducted mental health surveys taken by college students across the country. Their study, published in 2022, found that rocketing rates of depression and anxiety followed Facebook’s arrival. Makarin says much of the harm they documented came from social comparisons: students viewed the online images of their peers and believed them to “have nicer lives, party more often, have more friends and look better.”
“In total, there’s an increasingly clear picture that, indeed, social media has a negative impact on mental health,” Makarin says. “We are not saying that social media can explain 100 percent of the rise of mental health issues... But it could potentially explain a sizeable portion.”
8. What can be learnt about social media?
A. It plays an important role in treating mental illness.
B. It is the leading cause of adolescent depression.
C. It has negative influence on adolescent mental health.
D. Its impact on mental health is still unknown.
9. What is Jeff Hancock’s attitude towards social media?
A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Favorable. D. Uncaring.
10. How does social media influence teenagers according to Makarin?
A. By threatening their academic performance.
B By causing them to be addicted to online images.
C. By making them feel worse-off than others.
D. By reminding them to balance their life.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To warn people of the harm of using social media frequently.
B. To expose the link between social media and mental health.
C. To analyze the causes of worsening adolescent mental health.
D. To introduce an effective approach to handling mental illness.
D
In what they claim is a world first, researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that artificially create the taste of salt, as part of efforts to reduce sodium (钠) levels in some of the country’s most popular dishes.
The chopsticks work using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on the eater’s wristband. The device transmits sodium ions from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of saltiness, says Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo, whose laboratory collaborated with the food and drink manufacturer Kirin to develop the device. The team plan to improve the first design and hope to make the chopsticks available to consumers next year.
The chopsticks could find a receptive audience in Japan, where the traditional diet tends to be high in salt due to the use of components such as miso and soy sauce. The average Japanese adult consumes about 10 grams of salt a day, double the amount recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The health ministry has proposed reducing daily salt intake to a maximum of 7.5 grams for men and 6.5 grams for women.
The chopsticks use “very weak electricity — not enough to affect the human body — to adjust the function of ions such as sodium chloride and sodium glutamate to change the perception of taste by making food seem to taste stronger or weaker”, Kirin said in a statement.
Miyashita and Kirin said clinical tests on people who follow a low-sodium diet had confirmed that the device enhances the salty taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. High salt intake can contribute to high blood pressure, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. “To prevent these diseases, we need to reduce the amount of salt we take,” said Kirin researcher Ai Sato. “If we try to avoid taking less salt in a conventional way, we would need to suffer the pain of cutting our favourite food from our diet, or suffer eating food with very little taste.” Miyashita’ s lab has also invented a lickable TV screen that imitates the flavours of various foods.
12. What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?
A. How the chopsticks work. B. What the team plans to do.
C. What the device is designed for. D. How a sense of saltiness is created.
13. What can be inferred from paragraph three?
A. The chopsticks may be popular in Japan.
B. The Japanese traditional diets are high in salt.
C. The WHO advised an adult to take 2 0 grams of salt a day.
D. A woman should eat at least 6.5 grams of salt everyday.
14. What is a direct result of the chopsticks according to clinical tests?
A. Food can have stronger or weaker flavours.
B. Low-sodium food tastes saltier than it actually is.
C. People are less likely to have heart attacks and strokes.
D. We may not be able to eat our favourite food anymore.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Japan conducts clinical tests on low-sodium diets
B. Japanese high-tech salty chopsticks gain popularity
C. Japan invents electronic chopsticks making food taste salty
D. Japanese researchers reduce sodium levels in popular dishes
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There you were, sitting in a classroom, practicing writing letters and words. Maybe you were printing (手写印剧字体) them, or maybe you were learning cursive (草体). At some point, you probably asked yourself, “Why do I need to know how to write when all 1 need is to press the keys on a computer?” ___16___ It also helps you remember the information that you write down.
___17___ Actually, beginner printing is usually very messy, and sometimes we cannot even tell what the letters are. Also, the shape of each letter can change each time a child tries to write it. But remember that every time a child sees a letter that looks a little different but still has the same name, it helps the child’s brain to learn that letter.
Research has also shown that if you wrote something by hand, you would remember it better than if you typed it on your computer! Why does this happen? ___18___ But speed may be the problem! When we type information, we tend to type exactly what the teacher is saying. Without thinking about it. Writing by hand takes longer, so we cannot record everything the teacher says. When writing, we tend to put things into our own words or summarize what the teacher says. ___19___
In summary, writing by hand can help you learn new things like letters, but it also allows you to remember information better than if you typed it. It does not matter how you write—printing, cursive, abbreviations (宿写).___20___ So, keep writing!
A. That makes things a lot easier.
B. It just matters that you write by hand.
C. Surely it is quicker to type during a lecture than to write, right?
D. What did your printing look like when you first started to write?
E. In a way, taking notes by hand is a way of studying while we are learning!
F. Well, in short, writing by hand helps you learn a set of symbols more easily.
G. When people write letters, they actively see and feel the letters being written.

I had been swimming competitively for five years but after such a long time, I was ready to quit. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn’t afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving “Honorable mentions” (安慰奖). Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a bookshelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up.
One summer day, the day before a big swim meet, I decided to break the news to my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. When I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, “Baby, remember these words: ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.’ Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that swim meet tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear?” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”
The next day we arrived at the swim meet late, missing my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted that I be allowed to swim with the older group. I knew that she was including me in the race so that our journey to the meet would not be wasted, and she had no expectations whatsoever that I would come in anything but eighth place and only that, because there weren’t nine lanes.
As I was mounting the board, all the other girls looked at me. I quickly noticed that these girls were here to do one thing—beat me! All of a sudden, my grandma’s words rang in my head. “Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine. Quitters never win and winners never quit.” “Yes, Grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours,” I said to myself.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
SPLASH! I swam harder than I’d ever swum before

B. By causing them to be addicted to online images.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. B

【答案】12. A 13. A 14. B 15. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要讲的是日本研究人员发明了一种能够人工创造咸味的筷子,旨在减少日本一些最受欢迎的菜肴中的钠含量。
【12题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“The chopsticks work using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on the eater’s wristband. The device transmits sodium ions from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of saltiness, says Homei Miyashita, a professor at Meiji University in Tokyo, whose laboratory collaborated with the food and drink manufacturer Kirin to develop the device. 故选A。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The chopsticks could find a receptive audience in Japan(这种筷子能够在日本找到接受它们的人群)”可推测出,这种筷子可能在日本会受欢迎,因此A选项正确;根据“where the traditional diet tends to be high in salt due to the use of components such as miso and soy sauce”可直接得出B选项,是直接信息,因此可排除B选项;根据“The average Japanese adult consumes about 10 grams of salt a day, double the amount recommended by the World Health Organization(WHO).”可推知,10克是世界卫生组织推荐的盐日摄入量的两倍,所以世界卫生组织推荐的是每日摄入5克盐,因此可排除C选项;根据“The health ministry has proposed reducing daily salt intake to a maximum of 7.5 grams for men and 6.5 grams for women. (卫生部建议将每日盐摄入量减少到男性最多7.5克,女性最多6.5克。)”可推知,卫生部建议女性每天最多摄入6.5克盐,而不是至少6.5克,因此可排除D选项。故选A。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Miyashita and Kirin said clinical tests on people who follow a low-sodium diet had confirmed that the device enhances the salty taste of low-sodium food by about 1.5 times. (Miyashita 和 Kirin表示,对低钠饮食的人进行的临床测试证实,该设备能将低钠食物的咸味提高约1.5倍。)”可知,使用筷子的直接结果是低钠食物吃起来比实际更咸。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“In what they claim is a world first, researchers in Japan have developed chopsticks that artificially create the taste of salt, as part of efforts to reduce sodium(钠) levels in some of the country’s most popular dishes.
【答案】16. F 17. D 18. C 19. E 20. B

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
SPLASH! I swam harder than I’d ever swum before.

It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One Possible Version:
SPLASH! I swam harder than I’d ever swum before. As I drew my right arm back, I noticed I was tied with one person. I assumed we were battling for eighth place and I refused to finish dead last, so I added more kick on the last 200 yards. I hit the wall and looked to the left and to the right for the swimmers who had beat me, but no one was there. They must have gotten out of the water already.
It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. I raised my head to see my coach screaming hysterically. My eyes followed her pointing finger and I couldn’t believe what I saw. The other swimmers had just reached the halfway point of the pool! That day, at age 15, I broke the national 17/18-year-old 400-freestyle record. I hung up my honorable mentions and replaced them with a huge trophy. “Yes, grandma, you’re right. Quitters never win and winners never quit.”
