After the disastrous bushfires swept through Australia in 2020, 73,000 square miles burned, affecting about 3 billion animals. Once the smoke cleared, WWF-US teamed up with colleagues from WWF-Australia to start a wildlife monitoring project called Eyes on Recovery. The idea was to set up a network of cameras that would serve as our eyes in the bush. My co-workers and I were determined to measure how Australia’s endangered wildlife was recovering.
In 2023, I traveled to Blue Mountains National Park in Eastern Australia. For a week, I, together with my co-workers, wrapped our arms around the trees to secure cameras around their trunks. WWF and 20 other organizations set up over 1,000 cameras across the land. What would we get through the cameras?
To date, our efforts have got over 7 million photos, one of which shows a koala climbing into a new tree. But if I took just two seconds to review each of those 7 million images during my normal work week, I’d finish reviewing them in around four years.
We didn’t have that kind of time in conservation. So WWF worked with other conservation organizations to develop a better way to manage camera trap data called Wildlife Insights, an online platform that can separate out all those blank images, find the ones that contain wildlife, and identify which species is in a photo. We uploaded our 7 million photos to Wildlife Insights, and sorted in weeks. Over 150 different species were detected.
With the help of tools like Wildlife Insights, information was getting into the hands of decision-makers more quickly, which was important for species like the endangered koala. A third of their habitat burned in the fires, including their tree hollows. As an emergency measure, WWF-Australia and its partners quickly installed (安装) artificial trees and monitored them using cameras. After analyzing the photos, we were amazed to find koalas were using every single one of the trees.
With the ever-mounting challenges facing biodiversity, it’s essential that we should continue innovating through technology so that we can get actionable data and make faster conservation decisions.
4. What did the author and his co-workers do in Blue Mountains National Park?
A. They set up a network of cameras. B. They recorded endangered wildlife.
C. They took many photos of animals. D. They collected data on various trees.
5. What made it necessary to develop Wildlife Insights?
A. The increasing dependence on camera traps.
B. The growing number of endangered animals.
C. The time needed to deal with camera trap data.
D. The difficulty of collecting data on biodiversity.
6. Why were artificial trees installed?
A. To advertise Wildlife Insights. B. To use cameras efficiently.
C. To mark animals’ living conditions. D. To provide homes for koalas.
7. What does the author try to do in the last paragraph?
A. Issue a warning. B. Make a suggestion.
C. Confirm a conclusion. D. Present a new finding.

Mastering the science and art of performing surgery takes years of study and practice for a human. Robots, as it turns out, can learn to do surgical tasks much faster. A new study presented at the 8th Annual Conference on Robot Learning in Germany introduced the world to a medical robot that employs artificial intelligence (AI) to learn to perform surgical tasks as well as a human.
The research team from Johns Hopkins and Stanford University used a da Vinci Surgical System in the study, which is designed to perform surgical tasks while being remotely controlled by a human surgeon. The robot allows the surgeon to work with greater control and precision. Using a type of AI training called imitation learning, in which an AI learns a new task by observing and coping human actions, the da Vinci robot was able to learn the very complex set of actions needed to carry out a surgical task.
Presenting the robot with a dataset that it hadn’t trained on, the researchers found that it was able to perform the virtual simulation(模拟)successfully. This meant that the robot was capable of generalizing, rather than just memorizing, and would be able to manage the unexpected situations that tend to occur in a real-life operating room.
“It’s magical to have this model where all we do is feed it camera input, and it can predict the robotic movements needed for surgery,” said Dr. Axel Krieger, assistant professor in mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins and senior author of the study. “We believe this marks a significant step forward in medical robotics.”
Previously, programmers had to go through the painstaking task of hand-coding (手动编码) a robot to get it to perform the action it was being tasked with. Now, it can be trained to learn a new task in a matter of days. Though the idea of a robot surgeon may seem scary to some people, the truth is that some surgeons have been using robots in the operating room for some time now, and it has only improved the medical field.
8. What can be learned about the da Vinci robot in paragraph 2?
A. Its self-taught ability. B. Its design style.
C. Its high working speed. D. Its great strategy.
9. Why did the researchers present the robot with an unfamiliar dataset?
A. To avoid the unexpected. B. To test its performance.
C. To control the simulation. D. To overcome its weaknesses.
10. What does Dr. Axel Krieger most probably describe the da Vinci robot as?
A. A lost art. B. A desperate attempt.
C. A misguided trend. D. A major breakthrough.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Applications in the medical field need updating.
B. A human surgeon should rely on medical robots.
C. The days of automated surgery may arrive some day.
D. Automated systems make medical care available worldwide.

Before joining Washington D. C.-based District Running Collective, Fallon Jones wasn’t a runner. “We were doing CrossFit then—there’s this group of people who run up the street,” says Jones. She was attracted after her first run with the group the following week. “I was in the slower pace group, but everybody was there at the end to cheer me on,” she adds.
The first known running club, the Thames Hare and Hounds, was established in 1868 in London, promoting the sport as a social activity. Over the decades, running clubs have spread across Europe and North America, initially attracting competitive runners but gradually appealing to a broader audience seeking support, motivation and friendship. In recent years, online platforms have allowed runners to connect, making running more accessible and inclusive.
Nowadays, conversational running is becoming a trend. Conversational running, which refers to maintaining a pace at which you can comfortably speak as you move, is often associated with Zone 2 training, which involves an intensity of 60—70 percent of your maximum heart rate. Kristen Hislop, a certified running coach, says people often struggle to achieve this pace though it doesn’t feel like an “arduous” workout; it’s often much slower than you’d anticipate. “But while it isn’t especially challenging, doing low-intensity exercise regularly can build endurance (耐力) so you’ll be able to go longer and further,” says Hislop. “You’re also going to recover faster and reduce your risk of injuries.”
Conversational running is also good for your relationships. “If you’re near somebody but not necessarily facing them eye to eye, you might be more willing to express yourself or you might just feel a little bit less shy,” says Rachel Goldberg, a licensed family therapist who incorporates walk-and-talk sessions into her practice. This can lead to deeper conversations and stronger connections.
Despite the benefits of running with others, finding the right run club to fit your needs is crucial. Jones knew her club was the right fit after her first outing. “They did a really good job in explaining the different pace groups,” she says. “As someone who’s approaching 40, it has been a blessing to find friends of all ages here at this stage in life.”
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A The popularity of running clubs. B. The origin of conversational running.
C. The development of running clubs. D. The advances in fitness technologies.
13. What does the underlined word “arduous” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Exceptional. B. Annual. C. Rewarding. D. Tough.
14. What does Rachel Goldberg say about conversational running?
A. It is a high-intensity exercise. B. It makes people willing to open up.
C. It frees people of work stress. D. It enhances people’s mental clarity.
15. What attracts Jones best about District Running Collective?
A. Its capability to group. B. Its access to local cultures.
C. Its promising future. D. Its obvious health benefits.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
People tend to set goals when the New Year comes. So why are we drawn to setting goals collectively and around the same time every year? ____16____ “Belonging to a community is an important human need,” explains Selena Bartlett, a scientist at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.
There are advantages of this type of goal-setting. ____17____ Research shows that couples who go on a diet together are more likely to lose weight than those who do so alone. Moreover, making changes at the same time as others also means you have others to share your success with.
____18____ For instance, when you’re relying on partners to keep you motivated and they decide to stop going to the gym, you might want to stay home as well. It’s also common for collective goal setters to compare their results with others and become discouraged if one person is succeeding where they aren’t.
If you want to set a goal with others, you’d better know the best time to set it. Regardless of what starts your motivation, Bartlett says it’s critical to take action as soon as you feel the desire. You may only have a short window of opportunity to make decisions about what you want to do before something gets in the way. ____19____
A strategy for successful goal-setting is breaking down bigger goals into smaller, more specific ones. So instead of saying “I’m going to lose 10 pounds a month”, set a goal to limit your daily calorie intake and go to the gym for 30 minutes a day. ____20____
A. One explanation is that humans are naturally social beings.
B. So moments of desire are the ideal time to put a plan in place.
C. Making setting goals enjoyable can give you immediate rewards.
D. However, there are also downsides about the goal-setting at times.
E They include external motivation and the chances to learn from others.
F. Research has shown that making specific goals leads to better performance.
G. A fresh start allows us to mentally separate our past goals from future goals.

When my husband asked me what I wanted for the coming festival, I replied, “The Famous Five series.” His first response was, “What’s that?” I had to explain. He knew there was loss and sadness associated with moving so many times, and that I’d lost some material things along the way. What I hadn’t explained quite yet was my desire to connect with my past through the books I’d enjoyed as a child.
During our elementary school years in Austria, I would frequent the British bookshop in Vienna. During those visits, I acquired all twenty-one books in the Famous Five series by the British author Enid Blyton. I enjoyed reading about the adventures of the “Five”, which included siblings(兄妹)Julian, Dick, and Anne as well as their cousin Georgina and her dog Timmy. The stories feature funny plots centering on catching bad people—quite extraordinary, considering the heroes were mere teenagers! The books were my passports to adventures I’d never experienced in my own life.
Unfortunately, my family had to move to the United States quite abruptly due to a health emergency. My parents had to make difficult decisions about what to bring to America. Since books were heavy, my parents were unable to bring most of my books with them, including the Famous Five series. I was heartbroken!
Fast forward to seven years into my marriage, some seventeen years after I’d left my treasured Famous Five series behind, I decided I wanted to acquire my books for a holiday. I’d been searching the Internet for the series but got disappointed, because no American book publishers or websites had the books. We could have bought them on a foreign website, but we were nervous about using our credit card that way.
The festival eventually arrived and my husband, daughter, and I sat around the table. We traditionally opened one present and each of us picked a gift. My daughter opened hers first, and then my husband. I eyed my chosen present, a colorfully wrapped box, and guessed what it might be. “An elephant?” my daughter smiled. “Oh, let’s end the suspense!” I said and began tearing the wrapping.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

After the disastrous bushfires swept through Australia in 2o2o, 73,ooo square miles burned, affecting about 3
billion animals. Once the smoke cleared. WWF-US teamed up with colleagues from WWF-Australia to start a
wildlife monitoring project called Eyes on Recovery. The idea was to set up a network of cameras that would serve
as our eyes in the bush. My co-workers and I were determined to measure how Australia's endangered wildlife was
recovering.
In 2023, I traveled to Blue Mountains National Park in Eastern Australia. For a week, I. together with m
co-workers, wrapped our arms around the trees to secure cameras around their trunks. WWF and 2o other
organizations set up over 1.ooo cameras across the land. What would we get through the cameras?
To date, our efforts have got over 7 million photos, one of which shows a koala climbing into a new tree. But
if I took just two seconds to review each of those 7 million images during my normal work week. I'd finish
reviewing them in around four years
We didn't have that kind of time in conservation. So WWF worked with other conservation organizations to
develop a better way to manage camera trap data called Wildlife Insights, an online platform that can separate out
all those blank images. find the ones that contain wildlife, and identify which species is in a photo. We uploaded
our 7 million photos to Wildlife Insights, and sorted in weeks. Oyer 15o different species were detected
With the help of tools like Wildlife Insights, information was getting into the hands of decision-makers more
quickly, which was important for species like the endangered koala. A third of their habitat burned in the fires
including their tree hollows. As an emergency measure. WWF-Australia and its partners quickly installed (安装)
artificial trees and monitored them using cameras. After analyzing the photos, we were amazed to find koalas were
using every single one of the trees
With the ever-mounting challenges facing biodiversity, it's essential that we should continue innovating
through technology so that we can get actionable data and make faster conservation decisions

Mastering the science and art of performing surgery takes years of study and practice for a human. Robots, as
it turns out, can learn to do surgical tasks much faster. A new study presented at the 8th Annual Conference on
Robot L earning in Germany introduced the world to a medical robot that employs artificial intelligence (Al) tc
learn to perform surgical tasks as well as a human
The research team from Johns Hopkins and Stanford University used a da Vinci Surgical System in the study
which is designed to perform surgical tasks while being remotely controlled by a human surgeon. The robot allows
the surgeon to work with greater control and precision. Using a type of AI training called imitation learning, in
which an AI learns a new task by observing and coping human actions, the da Vinci robot was able to learn the very
complex set of actions needed to carry out a surgical task
Presenting the robot with a dataset that it hadn't trained on, the researchers found that it was able to perform
the virtual simulation(模拟)successfully. This meant that the robot was capable of generalizing, rather than just
memorizing, and would be able to manage the unexpected situations that tend to occur in a real-life operating room
"It's magical to have this model where all we do is feed it camera input, and it can predict the robotic
movements needed for surgery." said Dr. Axel Krieger. assistant professor in mechanical engineering at Johns
Hopkins and senior author of the study."We believe this marks a significant step forward in medical robotics."
Previously, programmers had to go through the painstaking task of hand-coding (手动编码) a robot to get it to
perform the action it was being tasked with. Now, it can be trained to learn a new task in a matter of days. Though
the idea of a robot surgeon may seem scary to some people, the truth is that some surgeons have been using robots
in the operating room for some time now. and it has only improved the medical field

Before joining Washington D. C.-based District Running Collective, Fallon Jones wasn't a runner. "We were
doing CrossFit then-there's this group of people who run up the street." says Jones. She was attracted after her
first run with the group the following week. "I was in the slower pace group, but everybody was there at the end tc

The first known running club, the Thames Hare and Hounds, was established in 1868 in London, promoting
the sport as a social activity. Over the decades, running clubs have spread across Europe and North America
initially attracting competitive runners but gradually appealing to a broader audience seeking support, motivation
and friendship. In recent years, online platforms have allowed runners to connect, making running more accessible
and inclusive
Nowadays, conversational running is becom ing a trend. Conversational running, which refers to maintaining a

intensity of 6o-70 percent of your maximum heart rate. Kristen Hislop, a certified running coach, says people
often struggle to achieve this pace though it doesn't feel like an "arduous" workout: it's often much slower than
you'd anticipate."But while it isn't especially challenging, doing low-intensity exercise regularly can build
endurance ( ) so vou'll be able to go longer and further."savs Hislop."You're also going to recover faster and
reduce your risk of injuries."
Conversational running is also good for your relationships. "If you're near somebody but not necessarily
facing them eye to eye, you might be more willing to express yourself or you might just feel a little bit less shy."
says Rachel Goldberg, a licensed family therapist who incorporates walk-and-talk sessions into her practice. This
can lead to deeper conversations and stronger connections
Despite the benefits of running with others. finding the right run club to fit your needs is crucial. Jones knew
her club was the right fit after her first outing."They did a really good job in explaining the different pace groups."
she says."As someone who's approaching 40, it has been a blessing to find friends of all ages here at this stage in
life.”
