For six hours we shot through the landscape of the Karoo desert in South Africa. Just rocks and sand and baking sun. Knowing our journey was ending, Daniel and I just wanted to remember all we had seen and done. He used a camera. I used words. I had already finished three notebooks and was into the fourth, a beautiful leather notebook I’d bought in a market in Mozambique.
Southern Africa was full of stories. And visions. We were almost drunk on sensations. The roaring of the water at Victoria Falls, the impossible silence of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. And then the other things: dogs in the streets, whole families in Soweto living in one room, a kilometre from clean water.
As we drove towards the setting sun, a quietness fell over us. The road was empty—we hadn’t seen another car for hours. And as I drove, something caught my eye, something moving next to me. I glanced in the mirror of the car; I glanced sideways to the right, and that was when I saw them. Next to us, by the side of the road, thirty, forty wild horses were racing the car, a cloud of dust rising behind them—brown, muscular horses almost close enough to touch them, to smell their hot breath. I didn’t know how long they had been there next to us.
I shouted to Dan: “Look!”, but he was in a deep sleep, his camera lying useless by his feet. They raced the car for a few seconds, then disappeared far behind us, a memory of heroic forms in the red landscape. When Daniel woke up an hour later I told him what had happened.
“Wild horses?” he said. “Why didn’t you wake me up?”
“I tried. But they were gone after a few seconds.”
“Are you sure you didn’t dream it?”
“You were the one who was sleeping!”
“Typical,” he said. “The best photos are the ones we never take.”
We checked into a dusty hotel and slept the sleep of the dead.

Discussing tech overuse with Gen Z isn’t groundbreaking. We all acknowledge the impact of daily device usage on our health, well-being, and ability to focus. A friend suggests that one day, we’ll regard social media use as smoking — we know it’s harmful, but we might need assistance to quit.
Popular social media and online dating platforms are intentionally programmed to grab our attention and keep us coming back for more. On platforms like TikTok, the “For You” page constantly refreshes with new content. Even making a successful match on a dating app can be as thrilling as winning on a slot machine (赌博机). Research compares humans on social media to rats in an experiment box by psychologist B. F. Skinner. When we share vacation pictures on Instagram, the likes we receive encourage us to repeat the behavior in future.
But beyond app design, the reasons for our inability to disconnect from unhealthy social media are complex. It likely results from a lack of face-to-face social interaction. Even in busy university centers, unscheduled interactions are rare; earbud-clad individuals signal their preference for undisturbed peace.
For many Gen Z members, most social interactions now occur partially online. However, not everyone fits this pattern; some have active offline lives and use phones minimally. But for many, resisting the phone’s temptation is tough — being offline often means feeling alone when everyone else is online.
Royce Branning, a 2018 graduate, founded ClearSpace, an app to reduce screen time, showing Gen Z’s efforts to fight against tech overuse. However, tech-based solutions to tech-based problems are only half the story. Similar to smoking and secondhand smoke, excessive Internet use reduces in-person connection opportunities.
There is a story in my family. My grandfather, who had been smoking for 15 years, quit smoking upon seeing his son playing with cigarettes. Today, young adults swear to avoid raising “iPad kids”. While promising to get rid of future generations’ bad habits is admirable, quitting ourselves beforehand would be even better.
8. How do social media and online dating platforms keep users engaged?
A. By organizing offline activities. B. By designing addictive functions.
C. By keeping connections with users. D. By providing users with platforms.
9. What do the underlined words “earbud-clad individuals” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. People enjoying being alone. B. People tolerating nearby noise.
C. People having an ear disorder. D. People suffering social anxiety.
10. Why is ClearSpace mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A. To display the determination of Gen Z.
B. To stress the seriousness of tech overuse.
C. To show the limitations of such solutions.
D. To discuss methods against tech addiction.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Solutions to Social Media Detox B. Gen Z’s Struggle with Tech Addiction
C. Gen Z’s Desire to Communication D. Impacts of Tech Addiction on Gen Z
B 9. A 10. C 11. B
由文章第二段中“Popular social media and online dating platforms are intentionally programmed to grab our attention and keep us coming back for more. (流行的社交媒体和在线约会平台被有意地编程,以吸引我们的注意力,让我们回来寻求更多。)”可知,它们通过设计上瘾的功能来保持用户的参与度。故选B。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。由文章第三段中“Even in busy university centers, unscheduled interactions are rare; earbud-clad individuals signal their preference for undisturbed peace. (即使在繁忙大学中心,计划外的互动也很少见;earbud-clad individuals表示他们更喜欢不受干扰的宁静。)”可知,他们更喜欢不受打扰的平静,所以这些是喜欢独处的人。因此,earbud-clad individuals指的是“喜欢独处的人”,与选项A“People enjoying being alone. (喜欢独处的人)”意思相符。故选A。
由文章第五段中“Royce Branning, a 2018 graduate, founded ClearSpace, an app to reduce screen time, showing Gen Z’s efforts to fight against tech overuse. However, tech-based solutions to tech-based problems are only half the story. (2018届毕业生Royce Branning创立了ClearSpace,这是一款减少屏幕时间的应用程序,展示了Z世代为反对过度使用科技产品所做的努力。然而,以技术解决技术问题只是故事的一半。)”可知,提到ClearSpace是为了展示这种解决方案的局限性。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“Discussing tech overuse with Gen Z isn’t groundbreaking. We all acknowledge the impact of daily device usage on our health, well-being, and ability to focus. A friend suggests that one day, we’ll regard social media use as smoking — we know it’s harmful, but we might need assistance to quit.
D
There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep-but what does that really mean? It turns out that the answer depends not only on your age, but also on your lifestyle. Some people are productive and happy with fewer hours of sleep, while others need more. Still, experts can determine guidelines that work for most people. The National Sleep Foundation researched the topic and gave new recommendations this week. The foundation acknowledge s that sleep needs will very lifestyle and stress should be taken into consideration but their recommendations offer a general guideline. For example, teenagers (14-17 years old) need 8-10 hours’ sleep every day.
To create the recommendations, some sleep and medical experts reviewed 312 articles from journals published during the last decade. This is the first time that a professional organization has developed age -specific recommended sleep durations (时长)bbased on systematic review of the world scientific literature.
A lack of sleep can be linked to weight gain, because that causes an increase in appetite, according to the foundation. It can also have serious consequences on the brain. People who do not get enough sleep are at increased risk for depression (抑郁症), and can endanger others. Those who become sleepy while driving, for example, risk both their lives and the lives of those around them.
Researchers also have found in the past that too much sleep can have negative effects. Low socioeconomic status and depression reportedly are significantly associated with longer sleep. However, experts nowadays find that research on oversleeping is still doubtful and needs more attention. Currently, there is no strong evidence that sleeping too much has health consequences. There is, however, laboratory evidence that short sleep durations of four to five hours have negative consequences. We need similar laboratory studies to determine whether long sleep durations result in physiological changes that could lead to disease before we make any recommendations against sleep extension.
12. Which is TRUE about sleeping time?
A. The time you need for sleep is related to your personal situation.
B. Experts’ guideline for sleeping time applies to all the people.
C. The less you sleep, the more productive you are.
D. The more you sleep, the more energetic you are.
13. The research shows that people without enough sleep will ______.
A. lose some weight B. eat more food
C. dream during their sleep D. drive faster than usual
14. From Paragraph 4, we can learn that ______.
A. too much sleep may result in social changes
B. researchers now agree with those in the past
C. more research on oversleeping is needed
D. research on oversleeping is quite persuasive
15. From which section of a newspaper is the passage most probably taken?
A. Health. B. Psychology. C. Sport. D. Education.

结合全文及文章第三段“A lack of sleep can be linked to weight gain, because that causes an increase in appetite, according to the foundation. It can also have serious consequences on the brain. People who do not get enough sleep are at increased risk for depression, and can endanger others. Those who become sleepy while driving, for example, risk both their lives and the lives of those around them.(该基金会表示,睡眠不足可能与体重增加有关,因为这会导致食欲增加。它也会对大脑产生严重后果。睡眠不足的人患抑郁症的风险增加,并可能危及他人。例如,那些在开车时变得昏昏欲睡的人,会冒着自己和周围人的生命危险)”可知,文章主要介绍睡眠时间与健康的关系,故该文章应是源于健康类报纸。故选A。

B To stress the seriousness of tech overuse.
C. To show the limitations of such solutions.
D. To discuss methods against tech addiction.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Solutions to Social Media Detox B. Gen Z’s Struggle with Tech Addiction
C. Gen Z’s Desire to Communication D. Impacts of Tech Addiction on Gen Z
A Health. B. Psychology. C. Sport. D. Education.

Then he stopped at a picturesque spot and watched those green grass at the bottom, but after a few seconds he fell asleep. In his dream he was creating a master piece of art that shook down the whole world. After some time he woke up and went back.
The following day he read about a painting competition that was being held in the town. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money to buy acrylic paints (丙烯颜料) and some brushes for the competition. In the evening when his mother returned from work, he saw that his mother had a few notes and that money would be enough for him to buy those materials.
The next morning before his mom woke up he quietly took the money and headed to the place where the competition was being held. As the competition began, he was quite nervous but he calmed down after a few seconds. He drew the place that he saw in his dream. He was so focused at his own work that he lost the track of time but he submitted his work just a couple of seconds before the end.
