I was born missing my left hand, yet I learned to adapt. One of my earliest memories is my father trying to teach me to tie my shoes. I gently pushed him aside and figured out a way to do it with one hand. My parents tried to make me feel ordinary, but the reality was inescapable.
When I was 13, an age when kids are already very self-conscious, I remembered getting on the bus and one of the other kids stared just a little too long at my left arm. I felt a sudden urge to hide my hand. I had decided that if people knew about my missing hand, they would not want to be around me anymore.
Making friends was challenging enough, but finding love was particularly discouraging. As I started dating,I made efforts to hide my difference. Eventually we’d reach a point in the relationship where I knew I had to tell the truth. I’d think over the “big reveal” and build it up in my mind for days. When I had gathered the courage, I let out my secret over the phone and hung up in a panic. Even when I received a call, I couldn’t face discussing it, relying on the answering machine.
Everyone I shared this with — friend, co-worker or boyfriend — said kind things like, “You shouldn’t hide it.” or “It’s no big deal.” But their words didn’t matter to me. The only words that really mattered were the ones I was telling myself, that story of how I was unworthy of love.
At 28, tired of hiding, I met someone special. For the first time, I allowed someone to really hold, look at, take pictures of, touch and love my limb— love me.
That relationship ended after ten years, but I kept the self-love and compassion I learned from it. From that point on, I saw my difference as something unique and beautiful about me, something that should be shown, not hidden.
4. How did the author tie her shoes?
A. By expecting quick success. B. By escaping from tying tries.
C. By finding her own method. D. By benefiting from father’s aid.
5. How did the author feel after sharing her difference?
A. Relieved. B. Unmoved. C. Unclear. D. Delighted.
6. What’s the author like after the ten-year relationship ended?
A. She had a positive attitude. B. She hid her difference again.
C. She became more dependent. D. She stopped making friends.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. Dealing with Self-Consciousness B. The Role of Courage in Life
C. Overcoming Social Prejudice D. The Acceptance of Uniqueness

Thirty years ago, while working on a right whale research project in the Bay of Fundy, Canada, I witnessed a remarkable sight. A male right whale with mud on its head, indicating it had been feeding at the bottom, came up to breathe and rest. Just before diving again, it let out a huge mass of poop(粪便). The water was filled with poop that looked like red floating bricks and had a strong, unpleasant smell. If it got on your clothes, you’d have to discard them as it couldn’t be washed out.
This initial encounter later inspired me to conduct global search for whale poop, taking me from Iceland to Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii. Right whale poop has a particularly strong and awful smell, but I’ve come to appreciate it. Whale poop provides valuable insights. It shows what whales eat, their hormones, if they’re ready to reproduce, how stressed they are, what’s in their gut(内脏), and their family tree. It also helps us assess the level of mercury and pollution in the ocean.
This experience set the path for my research career. Two years after seeing whale poop for the first time, I took an ocean ecology class and learned about the biological pump. Phytoplankton(浮游植物)grows near the ocean surface and through the food chain, nutrients can sink to the deep sea. However, I realized that right whales, which feed at depth and poop at the surface, likely bring nutrients like iron and so on back up. This led to the concept of the “whale pump”, which does the opposite of the biological pump by pumping nutrients back to the surface. These nutrients can be absorbed by phytoplankton and flow through the ocean food chain. This is important because some people in Japan, Norway, and Iceland think whales eat “our fish” and cause fish numbers to drop. The whale pump shows that the relationship is more complex and that whales might actually increase fish populations.
Whale poop not only helps us understand the present ocean but also gives us a look into the past when there were more whales. Restoring whales and their nutrient pathways could help make the ocean more diverse.
8. What does the underlined word “discard” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Abandon. B. Wash. C. Keep. D. Appreciate.
9. Why does the author appreciate whale poop?
A. It provides a remarkable sight. B. It makes the author travel a lot.
C. It looks like red floating bricks. D. It makes precious insights available.
10. What is the effect of the “whale pump”?
A. Nutrients float to the surface. B. Fisheries experience a decline.
C. The ocean food chain is threatened. D. The environment is polluted severely.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To describe the abnormal behavior of right whales.
B. To explain the ecological importance of whale poop.
C. To argue against the idea that whales harm fisheries.
D. To discuss how we can understand the present ocean.

A Queensland University of Technology (QUT) research team has taken inspiration from the brains of insects and animals for more energy-efficient robotic navigation
The research, led by Dr Hussaini, along with Professor Milford and Dr Fischer from the QUT Centre for Robotics, was published in IEEE Transactions on Robotics. They came up with a novel place recognition algorithm (算法) using Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs).
“SNNs are artificial neural networks that imitate how biological brains process information using brief, separate signals, much like how neurons (神经元) in animal brains communicate,” Dr Hussaini said. “These networks are particularly well-suited for neuromorphic hardware — specialized computer hardware that copies biological neural system — enabling faster processing and significantly reduced energy consumption.”
Modern robots still struggle to navigate and operate in complex, unknown environments. They also often rely on AI-based navigation systems that need a lot of computing power and energy for training.
Dr Fischer said, “Animals are really good at getting around in large, dynamic environments. They do it efficiently and reliably.” He thinks this research is a step closer to making navigation systems inspired by biology. These systems might one day be better than today’s conventional approaches.
The system developed by the QUT team uses small neural network parts to recognize specific places from images. These parts were put together to make a group of spiking networks to create a navigation system that can learn to move around in large environments.
“Using a series of images instead of single pictures enabled an improvement of 41 percent in place recognition accuracy, allowing the system to adapt to appearance changes over time and across different seasons and weather conditions,” Professor Milford said.
“This research can help make more efficient and reliable navigation systems for autonomous robots in energy-limited environments. It’s especially good for things like space exploration and disaster recovery, where using energy well and being quick to respond are critical,” Dr Hussaini said.
12. What does the QUT research focus on?
A. Testing artificial intelligence systems.
B. Imitating AI-based navigation systems.
C. Managing existing robotic navigation systems.
D. Creating bio-inspired robotic navigation systems.
13. What is a key advantage of SNNs?
A. Requiring low energy. B. Conducting object detection.
C. Producing suitable hardware. D. Processing separate information.
14. What can be inferred about neural network parts?
A. They analyze environmental sounds. B. They assess conventional approaches.
C. They enable accurate place recognition. D. They measure different weather conditions.
15. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The significance of the research. B. The advantage of the system.
C. The efficiency of the navigation. D. The performance of the application.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly popular in children’s lives, from voice-activated assistants like Alexa to AI-powered homework help tools. ___16___ To help children balance the benefits of AI without nurturing dependency, here are some practical strategies:
Frame AI as a supportive partner, not a solution. ___17___ If they’re working on an assignment, ask them to first attempt it independently. Once they’ve done their best, they can use AI to check their work or get additional insights. This way, they see AI as an aid in refining their ideas rather than as a replacement for their effort.
___18___ Mindful technology use involves curiosity about where information comes from. Encourage your child to ask questions like, “How did this answer come to me?” or “Is this information proven?” This not only builds critical thinking but also teaches them to assess AI-generated content with a healthy level of skepticism.
Encourage creativity over convenience. When kids are working on creative projects, such as writing or artwork, suggest they use AI as a brainstorming tool. ___19___ However, they need to shape those ideas in their unique style. This approach helps them see AI as a springboard for their creativity, not a substitute for their own ideas.
Set boundaries on AI use. Just as you set limits on screen time, establish boundaries for AI use. For example, decide that AI can be used for initial research. ___20___ These guidelines highlight that while AI is a valuable tool, it should not replace the learning process or independent thinking.
By encouraging your children to view AI as a helpful resource rather than a crutch (依靠), you’ll promote their independence, creativity and critical thinking.
A. Model responsible AI use.
B. Teach them to question the source.
C. However, do not use it to complete assignments.
D. Encourage kids to view AI as a helper, not a shortcut.
E. AI can be a great educational tool if used responsibly.
F. For example, if they’re writing a story, they can ask AI for topic ideas.
G. While these technologies can be incredibly useful, over-reliance can lead to problems.

While walking along the street, the bitter cold of a December day in Barrow was ruining my mood. The temperature was below zero so I rushed into the subway station, hoping to get warm.
Warmth came to my body as I settled onto a bench with a cup of hot coffee. Now I was ready to relax and do some serious people-watching. I noticed a homeless man seated nearby. The pleasant smell of delicious food from the subway food court(美食广场) was attracting me to consider an early dinner. From the longing look in my neighbor’s eyes, it was obvious that he, too, noticed the good smell. I wondered how long it had been since he had eaten anything, expecting he would approach me for some food. But he never did. My head and heart were battling it out: the former telling me to mind my own business, and the latter urging me to make an immediate trip to the food court for him.
While this inner debate was fierce, a well-dressed young couple suddenly approached. “Excuse me, sir,” began the husband. “We just finished eating and our appetite wasn’t as big as we thought. We hate to waste food. Can you help us out and put this to good use?” The kind stranger handed a large container with food. “Thank you.” came the grateful reply. Feeling good about what I had seen, but disappointed by my own lack of action, I observed my neighbor’s response to his sudden good fortune.
He lifted the soup, cupping his hands around the steaming bowl. It was obvious that he was going to enjoy this miracle meal. He opened mouth and suddenly, he stopped.
The reason for this unexpected behavior soon became clear. Entering the hall was a new arrival, in his seventies, without a hat and gloves. His lightweight jacket was a poor protection against cold. His face and hands were red and damaged. People around focused on him with pity and whispered at this sad sight.

C

A Queensland University of Technology (QUT) research team has taken inspiration from the brains of insects and animals for more energy-efficient robotic navigation.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My neighbor was the only one taking action.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】My neighbor was the only one taking action. Quickly putting aside his miracle meal, my neighbour stood up and guided the elderly man to share his seat. Hardly had he seated himself when my neighbour tenderly put his jacket over the elderly man’s shoulders. He said with a smile, “Can you help out?”, passing the meal and placing the steaming cup of soup in his hands. The old man obviously was astonished, but he accepted it with gratitude. Seeing this, I was so ashamed of myself. At the moment, my head and heart stopped battling, determined to buy a meal for my neighbour.
I went to buy food from the food court, with tears welling up in my eyes. What my neighbour said exactly spoke my mind. Despite a sense of guilt in my heart, I felt it was my job to do the same. After a while, I came back with steaming soup and a sandwich. I approached my neighbour respectfully, “Can you help me out?” I asked. “Why not?” He responded jokingly. People around cast admiring look on me, which made me relieved. It wasn’t until that day that I truly understand the meaning of sharing. I left the subway station, feeling warmer, even if the bitter cold wind filled the air.
