Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading. “Growing up, I was really shy, so I always turned to books,” she said. “They became my best friends when I didn’t have one.”
In 2019, when Emily was in her second year of high school, her dad suffered from cancer. The news was difficult for the family. Books became an even bigger comfort, and she started thinking about families in similar situations. When her father recovered, she came up with a plan to help others. “The idea came from the fact that there were kids who were facing the same problem,” she said.
Then, Emily started the book drive in her hometown, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The goal was to collect books and give them to kids being treated for cancer in local hospitals. Her father was not surprised by this plan. “She always wants to do things for the neighborhood,” he said. Since the start of the book drive, which she calls For Love & Buttercup, Emily has collected more than 10,000 books.
Emily had no idea how much attention her work would get. She started by posting on social media, asking people in her area to donate. “I was expecting maybe two or three neighbors to do it,” she said. “But it ended up blowing up,” especially when newspapers began reporting it.
The Children’s Inn is one of the places where Emily has donated books. “Donations like Emily’s share a piece of the world with kids and families that they may not experience,” said its director, Aisha Campbell. Emily continues to run the book drive with her parents’ help. She hopes to one day make it reach more kids. The memory of the first time she visited children who’d received her books sticks with her. “It was the best day of my life,” she said. “I realized I wanted to do this type of work forever.”
4. What made Emily come up with the book drive?
A. Her father’s illness. B. Her care for others.
C. Her habit of reading. D. Her own shyness.
5. What did Emily’s For Love & Buttercup want to do?
A. Help her father defeat cancer. B. Give her father a surprise.
C. Comfort other kids in need. D. Collect books for hospitals.
6. How did Emily feel about the book drive at first?
A. Uncertain. B. Surprised. C. Proud. D. Disappointed.
7. What is Emily’s future plan?
A. Getting more help from her parents. B. Starting another book drive very soon.
C. Making her program benefit more kids. D. Writing books about her experiences.

Officials of Detroit, Michigan, have equipped a piece of road with new technology designed to charge electric vehicles (EVs) on the path. The roadway is meant to serve as a demonstration project for the technology, which could be expanded to larger road systems.
The system uses a series of copper wires placed underneath the road. These wires have the ability to send electricity through a magnetic field to charge an EV’s battery. Charging can happen while the car is driving or sitting above the equipment. Electreon says the electric road system is safe for people and animals walking over it and does not harm drivers.
The technology was created by Electreon, a developer of wireless charging solutions for EVs. Stefan Tongur, Electreon’s vice president of business development, told The Associated Press EVs require special equipment to receive the wireless signal. “The technology is smart,” Tongur said, and “knows who you are...”
The electrified road stretches about one half-kilometer. It will be used to test and improve the technology in preparation for wider releases. Tongur said the project aims to “demonstrate how wireless charging unlocks widespread EV adoption, addressing limited range, grid (电网) limitations, and battery size and costs.” He looks forward to a future in which, in his words, “EVs are the norm, not the exception.”
Michigan’s Department of Transportation (DOT) signed a five-year agreement with Electreon to develop the roadway charging system. Officials have said they plan to build another electrified stretch of road in another part of the city. Michigan transportation officials say the wireless-charging roadway project has helped position the state and city of Detroit as national leaders in EV technology. “In Michigan, we want to stay ahead of the curve,” Michigan DOT Director Bradley C.Wieferich told the AP.
8 What is the new technology intended to do?
A. Improve EVs’ batteries. B. Demonstrate a project.
C. Expand road systems. D. Supply power to EVs.
9. What do we know about the electric road system?
A. People and animals may get an electric shock near it.
B. EVs are charged through contact with its copper wires.
C. It charges EVs only if they stay still on the equipment.
D. A special device is needed to pick up its wireless signals.
10. Which of the following can best replace the underlined phrase “stay ahead of the curve”?
A. Develop more smoothly. B. Make progress in the industry.
C. Take the lead in the field. D. Achieve a goal ahead of time.
11. What is Bradley’s attitude towards the project?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Skeptical.

Scientists have an unlikely new helper while exploring the Earth’s crust (地壳) deep beneath the ocean: Fin whales. New research, published Thursday in Science, finds these Fin whale calls’ sound waves can help create images of the seafloor down to 2. 5 kilometers.
Seafloor imaging, which is important for studying things like earthquake mechanics and carbon storage capacity, usually uses large air guns that send waves of sound downwards. The sound waves go through the crust and bounce back to instruments on the seafloor, carrying information about the structures they travel through. But such surveys are expensive, and the guns’ explosive noise may interrupt sea creatures that use sound to communicate.
Vaclav Kuna, the study co-author, was studying earthquakes when he noticed strange readings on the seafloor seismic (地震的) instruments, which turned out to match the frequencies of fin whale calls. Whale songs often appear in such instruments’ records, says Emily Roland, a marine seismologist at the University of Washington. Seismologists usually see these signals as annoyance. Kuna, however, noticed that the signals were not coming directly from the whales, but were echoes bouncing back from within the crust.
This technique does have limitations, Kuna says. Fin whale songs are limited in frequency, meaning the subsurface images are not as clear as those made with air guns. Additionally, a relatively flat seafloor is needed to triangulate (作三角测量) the whales’ positions while multiple stations would be needed in uneven or mountainous regions, he says.
Nevertheless, these whales are found almost everywhere except the ice-covered areas of the Arctic. The whale calls’ wide existence means they could provide new insight into old seismic datasets, Roland says. “At least the whale songs can serve as an additional source of signals. They are free and they are always there,” Kuna says. “It’s a win-win.”
12. What do we know about seafloor imaging in Paragraph 2?
A. It may affect some sea animals. B. It can help predict earthquakes.
C. It is not completely accurate. D. It is environmentally-friendly.
13. What can we infer about fin whale calls?
A. They can help scientists to locate their habitats.
B. They are easy to record and measure in the ocean.
C. They are likely to be used for seafloor imaging.
D. They have different frequencies among fin whales.
14. What is the potential use of fin whale songs?
A. Exchanging messages between whales.
B. Working as an extra source of signals.
C. Providing useful insights into whales.
D. Exploring the ice-covered areas of the Arctic.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Fin Whale Calls Reveal Structure beneath Ocean Floor
B. Fin Whales Communicate by Singing Special Songs
C. Fin Whale Protection Is a Win-win Move for All
D. Seafloor Imaging Helps to Locate More Resources

____18____ The experience differs from person to person, but the same chemical (化学的) process takes place in each of us. In reaction to anxiety(焦虑), our bodies produce a chemical that prepares us to either fight or run away quickly. Scientists refer to this as our bodies’ “fight or flight” reaction. As a result, we feel great energy that makes our hands sweat, our hearts race, and our knees shake.
____19____ Practising your performance and following some simple tips can help calm nerves (神经紧张) and manage the feelings caused by anxiety. First, dress comfortably and appropriately (合适地). Second, before the performance, take deep breaths and stretch to help relax your body. Third, stay away from drinks that contain caffeine (咖啡因). ____20____ Instead, try a banana! We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved over during the summer vacation, so I didn’t have to deal with school right away. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.

8. What is the new technology intended to do?

Dear Jack,
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from addiction to mobile phone games. Actually, it is commonly seen that more and more teenagers get crazy about mobile phone games, which distract them from studies. Besides, it causes a lack of sleep, posing a threat to their health.
Therefore, to avoid it, I recommend you to manage your time wisely and responsibly. The less time you spent on online gaming, the less likely it is you will be addicted. We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved over during the summer vacation, so I didn’t have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends? Would If it in? Would I survive in this strange new world? Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn’t know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
The none day, at all boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team.
