Winter Festivals in the World
Here are amazing winter festivals held in some places around the world. Enjoy the magic of winter celebrations!
International Snow Sculpture (雕塑) Championships-America
This winter festival has been celebrated for many years. Teams of artists from around the world must compete to carve 25-ton blocks of snow into works of art themselves. There are no power tools allowed! The result is an outdoor art gallery (画廊) in downtown Breckenridge. The 34th yearly Snow Sculpture Championships run from January 22 to January 26, and the art gallery is open from January 26 to January 31.
Kiruna Snow Festival-Sweden
The Discoverer explains that this snow festival, which began in 1986, is held in Kiruna, deep inside the Arctic Circle. The main part of the festival is a snow sculpting competition that includes artists from around the world. But there are plenty of activities to keep visitors busy during the competition, including sledding(乘雪橇), figure skating and a snow blower contest where they work to see who can clear a path through a 40 cm deep pile of snow. The festival takes place from January 24 to January 28.
Ice Magic Festival-Canada
The Ice Magic Festival has been taking place in Lake Louise for over 20 years, according to World Atlas. The competition runs from January 29 to February 1 and from February 2 to February 4. A few years ago I was leaving the dog shelter where I worked only to find a baby goat at the end of the driveway. The shelter’s owners are known as animal rescuers, and I figured someone had abandoned him over the fence. The kid was visibly nervous but stood perfectly still as I approached.
I’m an animal lover and I’ve brought home dogs, cats, horses, and chickens, but never a goat. The tiny kid was too adorable to resist. I named him Quincy, and with the help of some experienced friends, bottle-fed him in my bathroom.
Quincy proved to be quite sharp-witted. When he was about a week old, I knocked on the bathroom floor and said “lie down”. I was astonished when he dropped down. I was even more amazed when he did it three times in a row.
A quick study! Quincy learned to lie down, bow, and turn in a circle in no time. He is house-trained, jumps in the back of my SUV when I say “load up”, and spends the day wandering with my dogs, whom he considers his fellow goats. He knows the name of everything I feed him, and even joins us for trips to the dog park.
I love to train animals and often take my dogs to shows where they can perform their tricks. Quincy did his first show when he was just six weeks old. He knew only a few tricks then, but he did them perfectly and never misbehaved or got nervous in front of the crowd.
Now he has a whole inventory (清单): he’ll come when called, walk on a string, wave, smile for the camera (“Say cheese!”), and more. Quincy and my dogs perform regularly at schools, nursing homes, and charity events. Quincy can even “read” his tricks off cards, which always earns the most applause.
It’s hard to believe that the baby goat nobody wanted turned out to be one of the smartest and most good-natured animals I’ve ever had. He’s by far the sharpest of my bunch—just don’t tell the dogs!
4. Why did the author decide to adopt the goat?
A. It touched his heart. B. He could only find a goat.
C. A goat was always his favorite. D. Some experienced friends convinced him.
5. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Brave. B. Gentle. C. Innocent. D. Intelligent.
6. How does the author present the baby goat’s ability?
A. By citing figures. B. By listing examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By drawing a diagram.
7. Which words can best describe the author?
A. Generous and modest. B. Cautious and smart.
C. Humorous and warm-hearted. D. Optimistic and creative.
C
Ponds are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams. Yet, for a century or so, ponds have been ignored by scientists.
Why have we overlooked such a significant part of the natural world? A key reason appears to be the cognitive bias (认知偏见) where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, biologists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find. Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are human-made habitats and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. Ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a long-lasting presence.
Ignoring ponds within science has had a big impact on our ability to protect their wildlife. It has created a world view in which policy-makers can simply ignore the big networks of ponds that make up so much of the global water environment. In Europe, for example, the Water Framework Directive mostly excludes any bodies of water smaller than 50 hectares.
Fortunately, views are changing. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a resolution (决议) on small wetlands, including ponds, giving more recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDERFUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
However, if we want to make use of the biodiversity power that ponds offer, there remains much to do. In a world where fresh water faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological engineering we can easily achieve to help support biodiversity.
8. What can be learned about ponds from paragraph 1?
A. They are difficult to research.
B. They fail to get due attention.
C. They are too small to support wildlife.
D. They have greater importance than rivers.
9. What does the cognitive bias assume?
A. Ponds are short-lived. B. Rivers are fully-developed.
C. Small things are unimportant. D. Natural habitats are unnoticed.
10. Why is the Water Framework Directive mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To solve a problem. B. To present a fact.
C. To prove a point. D. To make a comparison.
11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Exploring ponds has a long way to go. B. Ecological diversity is easy to realize.
C. Fresh water supply can meet our needs. D. Building ponds can promote economy.
D
While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors — drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing, a new study finds that there’s another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary (不爱活动的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk”group by the study’s authors.
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so large — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.”
Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identification, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.
12. Which teenager probably belongs to the “invisible risk” group?
A. A teenager who skips school.
B. A teenager who drinks frequently.
C. A teenager who exercises regularly.
D. A teenager who suffers from lack of sleep.
13. What can we know about the new study?
A. It was intended to dig into the reasons for depression.
B. Its findings were under expectation of the research team.
C. It was conducted by analyzing and comparing the previous data.
D. It revealed an alarming rate of the invisible group suffering depression.
14. What is Carli’s attitude toward the findings?
A Unclear. B. Concerned. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
15. What is the author’s intention of writing this passage?
A. To caution teens against developing unhealthy habit.
B. To share a novel psychological experiment with teens.
C. To introduce a new treatment for teens’ mental disorder.
D. To warn about the unobserved signs for teens’ mental problems.

____17____ Some people experience earworms almost every day. For other people, it only happens once in a while. So what makes people experience earworms? There are four possible reasons.
The first reason is simply hearing the song. These stimuli can cause an individual to start thinking about a particular song.
What can you do when you have an earworm playing over and over in your head? Scientists do not have a cure for earworms. But people who experience earworms often have many suggested solutions. For example, doing difficult math problems in your head can help you concentrate on the problems rather than earworms. Another method is to write the words of the song down backwards and then sing the words as written down. ____20____

B. It plays again, and again, and again.
C. Almost everyone has experienced an earworm.

There were many embarrassing times and situations when I was in primary school. I vividly remember a moment that I still regret to this day.
During my childhood, an important part of my time was spent on my collection of National Geographic magazines. Each year on my birthday, my mother would gift me a new magazine to add to my growing collection, which I treasured very much. One day, when I was seven, I ran across a picture of a bologna tree. However, I didn't actually read the article about the tree. I just thought I discovered the source of bologna sandwiches! Little did I know that this newfound knowledge would come back to trouble me in the future.
Not long after, I found an opportunity to show my rich knowledge and prove to my classmates that I was indeed a smart kid. During a classroom discussion about unusual things, I took the moment to confidently stand up in front of the whole class. With an air of authority, I declared, “It is a well-known fact that bologna sandwiches come from the bologna tree.”
I deeply believe that the delicious sandwiches I had tasted during a family vacation to Italy grow on trees. This extremely silly opinion was a source of both embarrassment and frustration for me. However, my teacher Ms Murphy at this moment was kind enough to smile and tell me that my misconception (错误想法) was “quite imaginative”. Unfortunately, my classmates didn't have the same opinion, as they laughed loudly and declared that my belief was “the stupidest thing they had ever heard”. It was a moment that made me feel foolish and ashamed.
For a while after that incident, I was filled with feelings of self-doubt and insecurity. I was ashamed of my inability to distinguish (辨别) fact from imagination. I felt like a clown (小丑), thinking that my classmates would never let me forget my foolish mistake.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150左右;

Though exhausted, everyone felt happy and proud after the end of the activity. We hope that this event will encourage more people to plant trees and contribute towards the betterment of the environment in the future.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
For the next couple of weeks, I was determined to avoid any further embarrassment. I refused to open the magazines and kept my mouth shut during classes. I felt like I was walking on eggshells, constantly worried that I might say something foolish. I was afraid to share my opinions or ask questions. As a result, I became increasingly isolated. I didn’t participate in any activities that might show my ignorance until Ms Murphy talked with me, enlightening me patiently. My spirits lifted, and I felt cheerful once more.
I began to share information with my classmates again and became more careful about the information. I started to double-check my sources and read articles in their entirety before sharing any information with others, unwilling to make the same mistake twice. It was a lesson learned the hard way, but it made me realize the importance of confirming information before presenting it to others. And while my bologna tree story might have been a bit embarrassing at the time, it ultimately taught me an important lesson that has stayed with me throughout my life.
