A British woman, Dr. Mantri, growing up in India started to notice his son, Dhruv, was struggling with simple arithmetic when he was in fifth-grade. After noticing this, she started employing an abacus (算盘) to help her son visually comprehend mathematics.
“I would ask him something like 35 minus 13 and he couldn’t do it.” said Dhruv’s mom Dr. Mantri. “I decided to change the way he looked at numbers,” she said. “An abacus is a tried and tested method, and the Egyptians used them for building the pyramid.” In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus and would go on to become a whizz kid with numbers, with even his classmates’ parents reaching out for help.
She never thought she would teach her son using an abacus, which she used as a child in India and it was always helpful. Within six days she started to notice a difference and see results. So dramatic was the turnaround, that school staff asked him to perform with the abacus at an assembly, where some parents even came to ask for advice on using it for their kids.
IT specialist Dr. Mantri said the humble abacus can be used for calculations into the trillions and kids enjoy learning on it because it’s like a game. “It becomes a playing tool for younger children, for it feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and visualize them.” She added.
By the age of 12, Dhruv was giving online cyber security seminars and is now pursuing a career in data science and analytics. Dhruv has now landed an apprenticeship (实习) at an international firm. During the four-year apprenticeship, he will spend one day a week studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Glasgow Caledonian University. “He is so confident now and I am so proud,” she said, with Dhruv adding “I don’t think my teachers would have guessed that I would be following a career in data science at that time.”
24. Why did Dhruv have difficulty in learning mathematics?
A. He was faced with language barrier. B. He didn’t find a proper way.
C. He suffered from eyesight problems. D. He lacked academic support from the family.
25. What does the underlined word “whizz” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Careful. B. Diligent. C. Outstanding. D. Struggling.
26. Why do kids like learning on abacus according to the text?
A. They find it appealing. B. They can calculate faster.
C. They enjoy playing games. D. They are eager for success.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Dhruv was addicted to the internet at 12.
B. Dhruv is teaching data science and analytics now.
C Dhruv is a full-time student at Glasgow Caledonian University.
D. Dhruv’s career choice was beyond his teachers’ expectation.

Sixty-six years ago, there was one human-built object in Earth’s orbit. It was Sputnik, the world’s first satellite, launched in October 1957. Try to guess how many human-made objects are circling the planet now. Ready?
Your answer is wrong, unless you guessed 100 trillion. That’s a jaw-dropping number. It was provided by an international team of researchers writing in the journal Science. For years, this junk has formed an ever-growing mass near Earth. It’s a danger to spacecraft. The researchers are calling for a global treaty to limit the number of satellites and the amount of rubbish in space.
There are 9,000 active satellites in orbit, the scientists report. That could grow to more than 60,000 by 2030. The rest of that 100 trillion figure includes everything from used-up booster rockets and stray bolts to metal flecks and paint chips. Don’t think a paint chip is harmless. Travelling at 17,500 miles per hour, it can strike a spacecraft hard. The International Space Station is dotted with dents and holes. Astronauts often take shelter in an attached spacecraft to wait out a passing swarm of space debris (残骸). That way, if the station is severely damaged, they can escape in a hurry.
The mess we’ve made in space is like the mess we’ve made in the oceans. Think of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It’s a mass of floating junk twice the size of Texas. We’ve had centuries to make the ocean dirty. But it has taken just decades for us to do the same in space. That’s why the Science authors include experts in satellite technology and in ocean plastic pollution. “As a marine biologist, I never imagined writing a paper on space,” writes Heather Koldewey, who works at the Zoological Society of London. Cleaning up space, she says, has a lot in common “with the challenges of tackling environmental issues in the ocean.”
Coauthor Moriba Jah is an aerospace engineering professor at the University of Texas at Austin. “Marine debris and space debris,” he writes, “are both a human-made damage that is unavoidable.”
28. Why is Sputnik mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To provide background information.
B. To introduce the topic.
C. To make a comparison.
D. To tell a story.
29. What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. What caused space debris.
B. The number of space debris.
C. The seriousness of space pollution.
D. What astronauts often do in space.
30. What does Heather’s words suggest?
A. Ocean pollution is very serious.
B. Ocean is the same as space.
C. Space pollution is getting worse.
D. She is going to write a paper on space.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. There is the same amount of marine debris and space debris.
B. Humans are to blame for the space pollution.
C. Marine and space pollution are unavoidable.
D. Humans can do nothing to prevent space pollution.

Tourists visiting La Gomera and El Hierro in the Canary Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling — not a tune, but the Spanish language. The locals are communicating in Silbo, a whistled Spanish language.
Whistled languages are almost developed in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest. That’s because whistled speech carries much farther than ordinary speech or shouting. As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting. That lets people communicate even when they cannot easily approach close enough to shout. On La Gomera, for example, a few traditional shepherds (牧羊人) still whistle to one another across mountain valleys that could take hours to cross.
Whistled languages work because many of the key elements of speech can be produced in a whistle, says Meyer. We distinguish (区分) one speech sound from another by small differences in their sound frequency patterns. A long e, for example, is formed higher in the mouth than a long o, giving it a higher sound.
To language scientists, such languages are more than just a curiosity. By studying whistled languages, they hope to learn more about how our brains get meaning from the complex sound patterns of speech. Whistling may even provide a chance to know one of the most dramatic jump forward in human evolution (进化): the origin of language itself.
Despite their interest to both language experts and casual observers, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world, and some, such as the whistled form of the Tepehua language in Mexico, have already disappeared. “... now you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less contact with modernity and less access to roads,” Meyer says.
Fortunately, there is still hope. UNESCO, the UN cultural organization, has listed two whistled languages, Silbo, and a whistled Turkish, as the world’s cultural heritage. Such attention can lead to conservation efforts.
32. What led to the development of whistled languages?
A. Geographic inaccessibility.
B. Rapid increase in tourism.
C. Greater information capacity.
D. Interest of language experts.
33 Why are a long “e” and a long “o” mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To show what key elements speech has.
B. To explain the differences between speech sound frequency patterns.
C. To prove the popularity of whistled language in the world.
D. To compare whistled languages and ordinary languages.
34. What might be a reason for the disappearance of whistled languages according to Meyer?
A. Construction of cities. B. Lack of attention.
C. Expansion of other cultures. D. Modernization.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Protecting whistles
B. How Whistles Languages Disappeared
C. Speaking in whistles
D. Why Whistled Languages Matter

Some people describe American society as a salad bowl while others think of it as a melting pot. In a bowl of salad, all the ingredients are mixed together.____36____ Together, however, the ingredients make up a unity. All the ingredients of a salad contribute to the finished product. They may be covered with the same dressing (调味酱), but the green vegetables, tomatoes and cooked corn can all be seen for what they are.
From this point of view, America is very much like a salad bowl where individual ethnic groups mix together, yet maintain their cultural uniqueness. People may work together during the day at similar jobs and in the same companies, but at night they may return to their ethnic groups where their own individual culture directs their way of life.____37____ Each ethnic group has its own special customs, language, food and traditions to protect and defend. This idea of the salad bowl is referred to as cultural diversity; that is, American society is a collection of various cultures living together in harmony within one country.
____38____ Here, society is like one large pot of soup. All cultural aspects are mixed together, sacrificing their original identity and keeping a bit of what they were to become a new reality. The longer the soup is cooked, the better the taste and the more likely it will be for the mixture to dissolve. In this sense, America can surely be seen as a melting pot where people from all over the world come to live and work together forming one nation. There are dozens of shared symbols. ____39____ In such a culture, symbols like the flag and the nation’s official song serve to break down the walls which separate ethnic groups.
Whether a salad bowl or a melting pot, America can be best described as a mixture of both.____40____
A. Both are correct depending on one’s point of view.
B. They never lose their shapes, colours or tastes.
C. This is why there is so much diversity within America.
D. In other words, America is a nation where there is unity in diversity.
E. Thus, one needs to abandon one’s culture to be considered “American”.
F. They serve to develop the various ethnic groups to create a new American culture.
G. The other theory, which is also used to describe American society, is the melting pot.

Drums in Space
Brenda Bongos was a happy, artistic girl, a girl with one big ambition — to play the drums in a band. But one big obstacle lay in her way. To be good enough to play in a band, Brenda had to practice a lot, but she lived nextdoor to a lot of old people — many of them were sick — in a care home. She knew that the sound of beating drums and crashing cymbals (铙钹) would really make them mad.
Brenda was a very good, respectful girl. She always tried to find a way of practicing her drums without bothering other people. So, she had tried playing in the strangest places: a basement, a kitchen, an attic, and even in a shower. But it was no good; there was always someone it would annoy. However, determined to practice as much as she could, Brenda spent most of her time playing on books and boxes, and looking for new places to practice.
One day, while watching a science documentary on TV, she heard that sound cannot travel in space, because there’s no air. At that moment, Brenda Bongos decided to become a sort of musical astronaut.
With the help of a lot of time, a lot of books, and a lot of work, Brenda built a space bubble (泡泡). This was a big glass ball connected to a machine which sucked out all the air inside. All that would be left inside was a drum kit and a chair. Brenda got into the space suit she had made, entered the bubble, turned on the machine, and ...
She played those drums like a wild child!
It wasn’t long before Brenda Bongos — “The Musical Astronaut” — had become very famous. So many people came to see her play in her space bubble that she had to mount (安装) a pair of speakers so that everyone could listen to her play. Shortly afterwards she came out of the bubble and started giving concerts. Her fame spread so much that the government proposed that she form part of a unique space journey.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

C. Dhruv is a full-time student at Glasgow Caledonian University.
D. Dhruv’s career choice was beyond his teachers’ expectation.
B 25. C 26. A 27. D
根据第一段中“After noticing this, she started employing an abacus (算盘) to help her son visually comprehend mathematics.(注意到这一点后,她开始用算盘来帮助儿子直观地理解数学)”及第二段中“In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus and would go on to become a whizz kid with numbers(在短短6天里,他开始在算盘方面取得进步,并成为了数字方面的能手)”可知,Dhruv五年级时在算术方面很吃力,他的妈妈用算盘来帮助他直观地理解数学,他取得了很大进步,由此可知一开始Dhruv在学习算术方面有困难是因为他没有找到合适的方法。
根据画线词前“In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus(在短短6天里,他开始在算盘方面取得进步)”及后面“with even his classmates’ parents reaching out for help(甚至他同学的父母都向他求助)”可知,此处指Dhruv在使用算盘后成为了数字方面的能手,whizz意为“优秀的,出色的”。
根据倒数第二段“IT specialist Dr. Mantri said the humble abacus can be used for calculations into the trillions and kids enjoy learning on it because it’s like a game. “It becomes a playing tool for younger children, for it feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and visualize them.” She added.( IT专家Mantri博士说,简单的算盘可以用来计算万亿,孩子们喜欢学习它,因为它就像一个游戏。‘对于年幼的孩子来说,它变成了一个游戏工具,因为它感觉像一个游戏。我认为成功的原因在于孩子们可以触摸和感觉算盘,并将其形象化。’她补充道)”可知,孩子喜欢用算盘学习是因为它就像一个游戏,对孩子来说有吸引力。故选A。
根据最后一段中“I don’t think my teachers would have guessed that I would be following a career in data science at that time.(我认为我的老师当时不会想到我会从事数据科学的职业)”可知,Dhruv的职业选择超出了老师的预期。故选D。
C
B The number of space debris.
B 29. C 30. C 31. B
根据第一段“Sixty-six years ago, there was one human-built object in Earth’s orbit. It was Sputnik, the world’s first satellite, launched in October 1957. Try to guess how many human-made objects are circling the planet now. Ready?”(66年前,地球轨道上有一个人造物体。1957年10月,世界上第一颗人造卫星“斯普特尼克号”发射升空。试着猜猜现在有多少人造物体在绕着地球转。准备好了吗?)以及第二段中“Your answer is wrong, unless you guessed 100 trillion. That’s a jaw-dropping number. It was provided by an international team of researchers writing in the journal Science. For years, this junk has formed an ever-growing mass near Earth.”(你的答案是错的,除非你猜的是100万亿。
根据第三段“There are 9,000 active satellites in orbit, the scientists report. Astronauts often take shelter in an attached spacecraft to wait out a passing swarm of space debris(残骸). That way, if the station is severely damaged, they can escape in a hurry.
根据第四段中““As a marine biologist, I never imagined writing a paper on space,” writes Heather Koldewey, who works at the Zoological Society of London. Cleaning up space, she says, has a lot in common “with the challenges of tackling environmental issues in the ocean.””(“作为一名海洋生物学家,我从未想过要写一篇关于太空的论文,”在伦敦动物学会工作的希瑟·科尔杜威写道。
根据最后一段“Coauthor Moriba Jah is an areospace engineering professor at the University of Texas at Austin. “Marine debris and space debris,” he writes, “are both a human-made damage that is unavoidable.””(合著者Moriba Jah是德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校的航空航天工程教授。“海洋垃圾和太空垃圾,”他写道,“都是不可避免的人为破坏。”)可知,从最后一段可以推断出人类应该为太空污染负责。故选B项。
D
33. Why are a long “e” and a long “o” mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To show what key elements speech has.
B. To explain the differences between speech sound frequency patterns.
C. To prove the popularity of whistled language in the world.
D. To compare whistled languages and ordinary languages.
34. What might be a reason for the disappearance of whistled languages according to Meyer?
A. Construction of cities. B. Lack of attention.
C. Expansion of other cultures. D. Modernization.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Protecting whistles
B. How Whistles Languages Disappeared
C. Speaking in whistles
D. Why Whistled Languages Matter
A 33. B 34. D 35. C
根据第二段“Whistled languages are almost developed in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest. That’s because whistled speech carries much farther than ordinary speech or shouting. As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting. That lets people communicate even when they cannot easily approach close enough to shout.(口哨语言几乎是在粗糙的山区或茂密的森林中发展起来的。这是因为吹口哨讲话比普通的讲话或叫喊要远得多。因此,吹口哨讲话的理解力是普通叫喊的10倍。这让人们即使在无法轻易靠近大喊大叫的情况下也能进行交流)”可知,人们在沟通时,地理位置的不便促进了口哨语言的发展。故选A。
根据第三段“We distinguish (区分) one speech sound from another by small differences in their sound frequency patterns. A long e, for example, is formed higher in the mouth than a long o, giving it a higher sound.(我们通过声音频率模式的微小差异来区分一种语音和另一种语音。例如,长e在口腔中形成的位置比沿着o的位置高,从而发出更高的声音)”可知,文中提到长e和o是为了证明声音频率模式的不同。故选B。
34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“‘... now you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less contact with modernity and less access to roads,’ Meyer says.
From this point of view America is very much like a salad bowl where individual ethnic groups mix together, yet maintain their cultural uniqueness.
B 37. C 38. G 39. F 40. D
空后句“Together, however, the ingredients make up a unity. (然而,这些成分合在一起构成了一个整体。)”以及本段末句“They may be covered with the same dressing (调味酱), but the green vegetables, tomatoes and cooked corn can all be seen for what they are. (它们可能被覆盖着相同的调料,但绿色蔬菜、西红柿和熟玉米都可以看出它们的本质。)”主要论述虽然美国社会就像一碗沙拉,所有的原料都混合在一起,但各种原料却没有因此失去自己的特色,即我们能看到不同种类的文化组成了现在的美国社会。B项“They never lose their shapes, colours or tastes. (它们永远不会失去形状、颜色和味道。)”符合上下文语境。故选B。
【37题详解】
下文“Each ethnic group has its own special customs, language, food and traditions to protect and defend. (每个民族都有自己特殊的习俗、语言、食物和传统需要保护和捍卫。)”介绍每个民族都有自己要保护和保卫的特殊的文化、语言、食物和传统。由此可推断出,此处解释了美国多元文化存在的原因。C项“This is why there is so much diversity within America. (这就是为什么美国有如此多的多样性。)”符合上下文语境,前后为果因关系。故选C。
【38题详解】
第一段首句“Some people describe American society as a salad bowl while others think of it as a melting pot. (有些人把美国社会描述为一个沙拉碗,而另一些人则认为它是一个大熔炉。)”有两种观点:认为美国社会是沙拉碗或者大熔炉。空后句“Here, society is like one large pot of soup. (在这里,社会就像一大锅汤。)”介绍大熔炉观点。G项“The other theory, which is also used to describe American society, is the melting pot. (另一个理论,也被用来描述美国社会,是大熔炉。)”照应第二个观点,且与空后句语意一致。故选G。
【39题详解】
下文“In such a culture, symbols like the flag and the nation’s official song serve to break down the walls which separate ethnic groups. (在这样的文化中,像国旗和国家的官方歌曲这样的符号可以打破种族之间的隔阂。)”介绍共同拥有的符号有助于消除不同民族之间的隔阂,创造出一种新文化。F项“They serve to develop the various ethnic groups to create a new American culture. (他们促进了各民族的发展,创造了新的美国文化。)”符合上下文语境。故选F。
【40题详解】
该段是对全文内容的总结。前文“Whether a salad bowl or a melting pot, America can be best described as a mixture of both. (无论是一个沙拉碗还是一个大熔炉,美国最好被描述为两者的混合体。)”说明美国是一个具有多样性和统一性的国家。D项“In other words, America is a nation where there is unity in diversity. (换句话说,美国是一个多元统一的国家。)”符合语境,是对前面一句内容的另一种表述。故选D。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Finally, Brenda was a real musical astronaut.

Years later, someone asked her how she had achieved all of this.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Finally, Brenda was a real musical astronaut. The government’s proposal led to an unprecedented opportunity for her to take her drums into space. Aboard a spacecraft, she played her heart out, the rhythm echoing through the vastness of the cosmos. The other astronauts were soon entranced by the unique soundscape her drums created. Videos of her performances went viral, captivating audiences worldwide. Brenda’s dream of playing the drums in a unique setting had not only been realized but had also transcended boundaries.
Years later, someone asked her how she had achieved all of this. Brenda smiled warmly and replied, “It all started with a dream and a lot of determination. I faced obstacles, but I never gave up. I found innovative ways to practice, even in the most unlikely places. My advice to anyone with a dream is to pursue it with passion and resilience.” Her words served as an inspiration to many, reminding them that with perseverance, any dream can be reached, even in the vast expanse of space.
