Recently, many places across the country have experienced heavy snowfall, and the snowflakes
(雪花)
look pretty and cute. Do you like snow? Do you know how snowflakes are made? Let蒺s see
a snowflake蒺s life experiences together.
●I begin as a speck of dust
(一粒灰尘)
in a cloud.
●The weather is so cold that water vapor
(蒸汽)
begins to stay on my body. As more and
more water vapor gets on me, I get caught in a water droplet
(水滴)
.
●Because it is so cold, the droplet becomes a small six鄄sided ball of ice.
●As more water droplets join me, I get six arms on each side.
●Each arm grows smaller arms of its own as I get bigger and bigger.
●Then, I wait while growing until one day the ground is cold enough so that I can come down
from the cloud to the ground.
●Finally, I get to the ground with many other snowflakes. What a beautiful snowy blanket we
make together!
Did you know:
Each snowflake gets to the ground differently. The wind and temperature may change their way
and this makes each snowflake different.

C. it is a snowflake D. it is in a water droplet
6. What does cold weather do?

Hi, I蒺m Christine. When I am alone in my room, I get scared that something bad is going to happen. My
mum says to think of something else, but it doesn蒺t help. What can I do? Help me!
This has happened to me, too. I read a book and got into it so that I wasn蒺t scared.
——
Sarah
Sometimes being alone can be scary, so maybe you need something to distract
(转移注意力 )
you. Try
playing some of your favourite songs and dancing to them!
——
Elise
Don蒺t worry. This happens to me, too. I say to myself I am safe, and people love and care about me over

I get this feeling, too, especially at night. I hold all of my soft toys close in my arms, get under the quilt

——
Kaitlyn
Try doing things that you love in your room. That will make it a happy and comfortable place to be, and
you蒺ll want to spend time in there.

Joe said to his friend Bill.

“
Bill, you never miss!
”
Joe said admiringly.
“
Unless I蒺m in a real game,
”
Bill complained.
“
Then I miss all the time.
”
Joe knew that Bill was right. Bill performed much better when he was having fun with Joe in
the school yard than he did when he was playing for the school team in front of a large crowd.
“
Maybe you just need to practice more,
”
Joe suggested.
“
But I practice all the time with you!
”
Bill disagreed. He shook his head,
“
I just can蒺t play
well when people are watching me.
”
“
You play well when I蒺m watching,
”
Joe pointed out.
“
That蒺s because I蒺ve known you since we were five years old,

Bill said with a smile.
“
I蒺m

Joe nodded and understood, but he also had an idea.
The next day Joe and Bill met in the school yard again to practice. After a few minutes, Joe
excused himself.
“
Practice without me,
”
Joe said to his friend.
“
I蒺ll be back in a minute.
”
Joe hurried through the school building, gathering together whomever he could find
—
two stu鄄
dents, a maths teacher, two secretaries, and a janitor. When Joe explained why he needed them,
everyone was happy to help.
Joe reminded the group to stay quiet as they all went toward the school蒺s basketball court. As
Joe had hoped, Bill was still practicing basketball. He made five baskets in a row without noticing
the silent people standing behind him.
“
Hey, Bill!
”
Joe called out finally.
Bill turned. A look of surprise came over his face.
“
I just wanted to show you that you could play well with people watching you,
”
Joe said.
“
Now you蒺ll have nothing to worry about for the next game!
”

Do you think you are smart? 17 These include understanding how much they don蒺t know,
high self鄄control and even a funny personality. Some research shows that they are connected to
intelligence
(智慧)
.
Smart people are better able to accept the fact when they don蒺t know something. 18 In one
study, for example, students were asked to estimate
(评估)
their scores after taking a test. For the
students with worse grades, the number of the questions they got right was smaller than what they
expected. At the same time, for those with higher scores, the number of questions they thought they
got right was smaller than the real number.
19 In a study, volunteers had to choose between two prizes. One is to get a smaller amount
of money at once. The other one is to get a larger amount of money later. The results showed that
people choosing to get the larger amount of money at a later date scored higher on intelligence tests.

Money may not buy happiness, but we use money to buy the things we need. Here are some
tips on being smart with money.
Learn to make money
You can get some pocket money from your parents, grandparents or neighbors if you can do
chores. These could include washing a car, sorting out the rubbish or taking the dog for a walk. Be
sure to do your best
—
you might get more work.
Help your money grow
Money can蒺t grow if it sits inside a piggy bank. If you don蒺t have your own account
(储蓄账
户)
, then ask your parents if they can open one for you. The bank gives you more money because
this is a reward
(报酬)
from the bank for keeping your money.
Make a plan
If you have a big event, it might mean you will need to spend more of your pocket money. A
plan for spending and saving will help you take control of your money, so when you need to spend,
you don蒺t have to borrow. A plan is useful if you are saving for something big, too.
Spend wisely
Spending money wisely isn蒺t just good for you. It can help the planet, too. For example, rather
than buying a new shirt, you could exchange one with a friend or buy a second鄄hand one.
41. Why does the bank give you more money according to Paragraph 3?
42. How many tips on being smart with money are mentioned in the passage?
43. What could we do if we want to buy a new shirt according to the text?
44. Who can you get any pocket money from in your life? How do you spend your pocket money?
Write 30 words or more.

45. How I Fell in Love with Peking Opera
I have been on my learning journey for five years since I first saw Peking Opera actresses dancing in a graceful way.
I have to wake up at 6 o蒺clock every morning to practice the key skills, such as leg exercises and voice training. To make my
pronunciation clearer, I read the lines loudly and quickly. It makes my lips numb, but I don蒺t give up.
As the saying goes,
“
One minute on the stage needs 10 years蒺 practice off the stage.
”
All the hard work was paid off. Last year,
I took part in a talent show for the youth and got the first prize.
The charm of Peking Opera is timeless. I hope more young people will love this traditional art.

I think it蒺s lucky for you to have such good parents. You should understand and respect them, and do what they ask you to do.
They have richer experience and better advice for young people. As your parents, they surely hope you become an excellent person.
Their demands are helpful for your growing up.
Every member should be responsible and do something for the family. So you should do what you can do, such as keeping your
room clean and doing the washing鄄up. Remember the proverb: Learn by doing.
You should keep your hair tidy and wear smart clothes. Teenagers should look like teenagers.
Anyway, if you have any problem, just talk with your parents.

Glad to hear from you again. As you mentioned in your email, there are indeed some table manners in China. For example, we
are not supposed to start eating first if there are older people at the table. And it蒺s impolite to point at anyone with chopsticks. As for
places of interest, I suggest you go to the Hangzhou National Tea Museum, where you could watch tea art performances and drink tea.
I蒺m looking forward to seeing you!
