Summer is finally here for most of us. Sadly, summer is not so pleasant to people in a bit less lucky place where air conditioning is not easy to get for most of them.
But as a saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way, especially for those who like doing it yourself (DIY). A young man from Bangladesh designed an air conditioning system called the Eco Cooler, one that does not require power, and is made of the world’s most common waste—plastic bottles.
The Eco Cooler is super simple to build—no special engineering skills are required. First, to fix it, a window should be taken away and replaced by it. Second, a board should be cut into the size of a window. Some bottle-neck sized holes should then be cut onto the board. Then, the funnel shaped bottlenecks, cut from the plastic bottles, should be put into the holes. The next step is to fix the design onto the window frame with the wider side facing outwards. And this is it.
The Eco Cooler then works by catching the winds and sending them inside the building. It can reduce the temperature of a room by as much as 5℃—a big difference when looking at comfortable 25℃ compared to uncomfortable 30℃.
The idea of the inventor, Ashis Paul, was to show his great product to as many people as possible. For this purpose, he received help from some groups of volunteers. Together, they offered to help local people build and fix the units, as well as teach them how to make them themselves.
Yes, the Eco Cooler is not a super high-tech air conditioning system, but it is one that can make a big difference.
1.To build the Eco Cooler is not ________.
A.easy B.difficult C.cheap D.expensive
3.What can we learn from the text?
A.Ashis Paul is a clever inventor and a successful businessman.
B.An Eco Cooler can fix the room temperature to comfortable 25℃.
C.The new invention of Eco Cooler is friendly to the environment.
D.Local people will replace their air conditioner with an Eco Cooler.
4.What’s the best title of this text?
A.DIY air conditioning made from plastic bottles
B.Why do we need an Eco Cooler in summer?
C.A strong-willed inventor and his DIY dream
D.Eco Cooler—a super high-tech air conditioner

Shanghai’s Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve (上海崇明东滩国家自然保护区) has been added to the World Heritage List. It is the city’s first World Natural Heritage Site. Dongtan 1 at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Each year, nearly one million birds stop there for short stays or wintering. To protect these birds, a nature reserve was 2 in Dongtan’s wetlands in 1998. In 2005, it became a national bird nature reserve.
Since 1998, great efforts have been made to protect the wetland ecosystem (生态系统).The 3 has not been easy. One of the biggest challenges is to control cordgrass This invasive (入侵的) plant was introduced in the mid-1990s to Chongming for shoreline protection. However, the grass grew too quickly across the Dongtan mudflats. 4 , many native plants died and the homes of birds were in danger.
A.successful B.prevent C. dropped D.rose E. effectively
Starting from 2002, the reserve has tried a number of ways to get rid of these plants. Finally, a plan was worked out. The first step was to build physical barriers (物理屏障) to 5 spread of the grass. Once the barriers were built, water was allowed into small areas. Above the water line, the grass was cut. Their roots were left underwater for half a year. This 6 killed these roots. When the soil dried out, native plants were replanted.
The method has proved to be 7 . “Our bird monitoring results have shown a great increase in the population of birds here,” says a worker at the reserve. One example is the little swans. “The total population monitored in Dongtan in the 1990s was 3,000 to 3,500. In 2000, the number of the little swans 8 quickly. But during the recent wintering season, we counted more than 2,900 little swans.” says another staff member. He adds that many birds are arriving at Dongtan because its improved ecosystem offers the perfect homes.

Since there are no laws about outdoor lighting in Hong Kong, our city is lit more brilliantly at night than 2 cities such as London or Sidney. Because of the bright lights, Hong Kong 3 sleep less well, so their health is harmed. Fortunately there are solutions to the problem of light pollution.
Firstly, business could use lights that are less bright. Some LED lights would be less 4 than the ones used now. In fact, many cities use LED lights for outdoor lighting.

Another solution is to 5 laws that control outdoor lighting. However, this solution might be harder because it would need the cooperation of government and businesses.
Lastly, individuals can help. We can 6 lights that we are not using. In addition, we should be more aware of how our lighting affects others. For instance, we should close our curtains as tightly as we can 7 our home lights do not keep our neighbours awake.

When a new cell phone starts to be sold in stores, many people rush out to buy one. We all want the newest, latest thing. But what should we do with our old cell phones?
Mike Townsend works at Total Recall, a cell phone recycling company. “Don’t throw your old phone away. Send it to us and we’ll recycle it,” he says. “ If you throw it away, it goes with other rubbish to become landfill. In other words, it is put in a big hole in the ground—and it becomes a big problem.”
Cell phones contain some toxic materials (有毒物质), like lead, mercury and cadmium. If your phone goes to a landfill, these toxic materials can get out and get into the water under the ground. That’s the water we want to drink or the water that goes into rivers or the ocean. Millions of cell phones are thrown away every year.
“At Total Recall, we take the old phones apart. Most of the materials in a cell phone can be recycled and used again,” explains Mike. “We sell the parts and they are used to make new products. For example, phone batteries contain nickel and cadmium. The nickel is used to make steel, and the cadmium can be used to make new batteries. The plastic cases of the phones are made into plastic fence posts.”
Mike says recycling your old phone is easy. “You can usually take it into a cell phone shop and they’ll send it to us.” So, before you throw your old cell phone away, use it one last time: search for a cell phone recycling company near you and give them a call.
1.Total Recall is a company which ________.
A.sells new cell phones B.recycles old cell phones
C.repairs old cell phones D.produces new cell phones
2.The underlined word landfill in the second paragraph probably means “________”.
A.an area of land where large amounts of rubbish are buried

3.What will happen if the old cell phones go to a landfill?
A.They will make a big hole in the ground and cause a big problem.
B.A cell phone company will reuse them again.
C.They will be used to make new products in a short time.
D.Toxic materials will come out and get into the water under the ground.
4.According to the passage, most of the materials can be recycled except ________.
A.cadmium B.mercury C.plastic cases D.nickel
5.The right ways to deal with the old cell phones are to ________.
① break the old phones into pieces ② take them into a cell phone shop
③ throw them with other rubbish ④ call for a cell phone recycling company
A.① ② B.② ③ C.① ④ D.② ④
6.Which is the best title for the passage above?
A.Don’t use old cell phones B.Take care of old cell phones

(24-25九年级上·上海黄浦·期中)Thanks to Earth, we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy. But it seems that we may think these things are normal and not realize that our planet is getting “sick”.
Among all the environmental problems, climate change sits at the top. Global average (平均的) temperatures have risen by more than 0.5°C since 1992. A half-degree temperature rise is a big thing. It means that heat waves can last around one third longer and rainstorms will be about one third stronger. The increase in sea levels will be much higher, according to NASA.Countries like Singapore that are at low places may be covered by the ocean in the future.
But this is not the only problem people are facing. It’s getting harder to get fresh water. Ocean pollution has become serious. Since 1992, the human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have fallen by nearly 30 percent.
Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth huge extinction in history. More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. The Amur leopard, black rhino and Cross River gorilla are some animals that are in danger of dying out completely.
However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer smaller. That’s because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.
This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.
1.What may happen if global average temperatures rise by 0.5°C?
A.The ocean will cover China. B.Cold waves can last a third longer.
C.Sea levels will be three times higher. D.Rainstorms will be more serious.
2.What does the underlined word “extinction” probably mean?
3.Which of the following environmental problems are mentioned in the text?
①Air pollution. ②Ocean pollution.
③Fewer animals. ④Smaller ozone layer.
A.①② B.②④ C.①③ D.②③
4.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) to the future of our planet?
A.Negative. B.Doubtful. C.Hopeful. D.Proud.
5.How have we made the hole in the ozone layer smaller?
A.By the increase in sea levels.
B.By gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.
C.By getting the fresh water.
D.By the growth of the human population
6.What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for Melati and her sister. But in 2013, when Melati was 12, and Isabel just 10, the sisters started to lose their love for swimming in the waters near their home on the island. When they walked back to shore, red and white plastic shopping bags would stick to their legs and bodies.
Melati didn’t think much about it until later in 2013, when her teacher gave a lesson on world heroes. Each of the heroes made a positive change to the world.
One night, the sisters talked about ways to fix the plastic pollution. Their parents agreed with the girls’ ideas. Soon, they gathered a team of 15, made up of school friends and students from other schools. They named their group “Bye Bye Plastic Bags (BBPB)”. Its task was simple: stop local people from using plastic bags.
The following year, the BBPB team spent their lunchtimes having meetings and organizing activities to stop plastic bags. Within 24 hours, more than 6000 people, both local and people from around the world, had signed up.
Melati and Isabel’s effort has made big changes. In 2017, they organized the first beach clean-up. Around 12,000 people collected 36 tons of rubbish across 55 locations. It became the biggest clean-up ever on the island and is now an event every year. In 2018, the government helped to stop single-use plastic bags. The law took effect in July 2019. Then, in 2020 the government promised to reduce plastic waste in the sea by 70 percent by 2025.
Today, BBPB is a global youth movement and has more than 50 teams in 29 countries. Their teams are given a set of tools for starters and a handbook prepared by Melati and Isabel. It explains how to organize teams, events and how to better understand the plastic situation in their own community.

(2024·上海崇明·一模)Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)

A. B. C. D.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.D 4.C 5.B 6.A

根据“A half-degree temperature rise is a big thing. It means that heat waves can last around one third longer and rainstorms will be about one third stronger.”
根据“More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund.”
根据“Ocean pollution has become serious”和“More than two-thirds of the world’s wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade (十年) if action isn’t taken soon, according to the World Wildlife Fund. ”可知,文章提到了海洋污染以及数量更少的动物,故选D。
4.观点态度题。根据“This shows that when we make quick and strong decisions, we can make positive changes.”
根据“However, we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone layer smaller. That’s because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone.”
故选A。

(2024·上海徐汇·一模)Answer the questions (根据短文内容完整回答下列问题)

The student union has received many proposals on how to make our school better. Among them, recycling wastepaper caught our eye, and we appeal all students to recycle it. Every day, the school prints hundreds of papers which are made from trees. We cut down millions of trees every year and replace hardly any of them. To save paper, you can write on both sides of a draft paper and make sure there are few blanks before dropping it. You can also take waste papers to the school recycling centre to reuse them. By making a few small changes daily, you can have a huge impact on the amount of paper that gets used.
