【2023天津宁河区调研】There is lots of junk (垃圾) in space. Some of
it is from rockets. In 1996, a rocket broke into about 300,000 small pieces. So
far, scientists have found over 10,000 man-made pieces flying around in space.
Only 6%—7% of them are satellites and space probes (探测器).Astronauts also
lose small things while working in space. In 1965, during the first American
spacewalk, astronaut Edward White lost a glove. For a month, the glove stayed
in space, travelling at a speed of 28,000 kilometres per hour. It became the most
dangerous piece of clothing for the earth in history.

Things move very fast in space. If they hit (碰撞) one another, it can be
dangerous. A little piece of paint from a satellite once made a hole in a
spacecraft window. Last year two US spacecraft dropped some bolts (螺栓),
and scientists on the earth worried a lot. Luckily the bolts floated (漂浮)
away into space. They could not hit the spacecraft.

【2024原创】Does alien life exist? It's a question many people have tried to
answer. Now scientists have found a new method for finding extraterrestrial
(外星的) life forms using artificial intelligence (AI).AI is a type of
program that allows a computer to learn from experience and perform tasks that
usually require human intelligence. AI works by taking in a large number of data,
then making predictions based on it.

The research team used their AI methods to analyse different materials and
determine whether they were biotic (生物的) or abiotic (非生物的).The AI
was also able to tell whether a biotic sample was currently living or a fossil
(化石).
To train the AI program, the researchers gave it data on 134 biotic and
abiotic materials. The program then used that knowledge to predict whether things
like human hair, bones and chemicals were alive or not. The team said the AI
was 90% exact.
The scientists also think the AI tool could detect alien life forms, even
though conditions for life are different on other planets.“If we do find signs of

life elsewhere, we can tell if life on the earth and other planets derived from a
common or different origin,” said Robert Hazen of the Carnegie Institution for
Science.
Now the team is focused on ancient rock samples from the earth to learn
more about life on the earth and where it originated. For example, the tool could
be used to settle a disagreement among scientists about 3.5-billion-year-old rocks
from Western Australia. Some experts believe they contain the earth's oldest fossil
samples, but others think the rocks just have unusual patterns.
