41-year-old Tracey Matayian is one of those Maasai women who fought hard to become the first-ever Maasai female referee. In an interview, Matayian said during her formative years, she couldn’t hide her passion for football and would join local boys every time she saw them play, which resulted in her being called names by other girls and occasionally getting scolded by her parents for keeping too much male company.
Matayian later joined a teachers’ training college. After graduating from college, she worked with Compassion International and would often encourage children of both genders to play football.
“It was then that I got an opportunity to referee a game between Rongai Football Club and Compassion International. There was no other referee at the time and since I was readily available, I went ahead to referee the match,” she recalled. Matayian added that after the game, she was eager to do more than just play and train the young children as she was also cultivating a lively interest in refereeing.
She would later help form football teams for both boys and girls from the local clubs. “The game occupies them as they get to spend time in the field, especially during the period they were home due to COVID-19. Football is a game of rules, and thus it ends up drilling discipline and character into young boys and girls,” said Matayian. She added that many of the youths were previously living an aimless life on account of laziness, but through football she has managed to occupy them.
Nevertheless, her efforts to follow her passion have not gone without challenges. Her dress code was criticized all the time. “This became a big issue for some people. They always complained that I was not respecting our culture by wearing shorts. But I have no option, since that’s the official dress code for the game. I often explained this to my beloved people, but it took a long time for it to be accepted by my community,” notes Matayian.
4. How did things go when Matayian first played football?
A. She was popular with local boys. B. She was abused by other girls.
C. She was turned down by the referee. D. She was driven out of her college.
5. How did Matayian feel after refereeing her first game?
A. Motivated. B. Tense. C. Exhausted. D. Relieved.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. How football is transforming the local children.
B. How COVID-19 is impacting the community.
C. How children overcome their laziness naturally.
D. How crucial discipline and character are.
7. What situation might Matayian have been in?
A. She was trying to change some football rules. B. She was getting soft with local people.
C. She was working hard to gain acceptance. D. She was promoting local culture.

Money-saving customers have long hidden the price tickets on clothing they buy for special occasions and returned them to the retailer the following day. These days, people only do it for social media.
According to a credit card company Barclaycard’s survey, almost 10% of UK consumers admit to purchasing clothes just to share the pictures on social media and get likes. The “outfit of the day” (OOTD) is returned to the store once it has been posted online. Barclaycard claims that this growing trend may be caused by online merchants’ “try before you buy” policy, which allows customers to pay for clothing they order online after trying it on at home.
But the rise of social media means that everyone, not just superstars, expects to build and maintain a personal brand. Since we’re documenting our lives and posting them online for public judgement, getting caught in the same outfits more than once should be avoided. And the cost of all those outfits of the day adds up, which makes returning a popular way.
There are brands that tailor clothes specially for social media shoppers, like Fashion Nova. “These are clothes made for social media: meant to be worn once, photographed and abandoned,” Allison P. Davis wrote in her report about the brand. Another favourite of the social media age is Rent the Runway, which lets customers rent designer clothing for a fee.
Some, however, are moving in the opposite direction. Groups promoting “work uniforms” have increased greatly in recent years, aiming to free women from “the trouble of clothing decisions”. The concept of the “capsule wardrobe”, which calls for purchasing a small number of high-quality pieces instead of lots of trendy throwaway clothes, is also making a comeback.
8. What does the survey by Barclaycard suggest?
A. Britons follow the fashion stars closely.
B. Some Britons send outfits back after taking pictures.
C Britons try on clothes after online purchases.
D. Some Britons over-order and return clothes.
9. What’s Fashion Nova’s special service?
A. Renting top designers’ clothes.
B. Creating unique shopping experiences.
C. Offering customers single-use clothes.
D. Helping shoppers improve their clothing style.
10. What’s the idea behind the “capsule wardrobe”?
A More choices and less trouble.
B. Less addition but more enjoyment.
C. Less uniform and more freedom.
D. Fewer clothes but better quality.
11. Why does the author write the text?
A. To compare different wearing trends.
B. To criticize the “try before you buy” policy.
C. To support buying high-quality clothes.
D. To introduce Britain’s new wearing trend.
D
As the planet gets hotter, the need for cool living environments is becoming more urgent. But air conditioning is not always recommended for use since units produce massive greenhouse gases and use lots of energy. Now, researchers have found in a new study an inexpensive, sustainable choice to replace mechanical cooling with refrigerants (制冷剂) in hot and dry climates, and a way to mitigate the dangers of heat waves during electricity blackouts.
The researchers set out to answer how to achieve a new benchmark (基准) for passive cooling inside naturally conditioned buildings in hot climates such as Southern California. They examined the use of roof materials that radiate (辐射) heat into the cold universe, even under direct sunlight, and how to connect them with temperature-driven air exchanges (that is, air can enter buildings and circulate freely). These cool radiator materials and coatings are often used to stop roofs overheating. Researchers have also used them to improve heat rejection from coolers. But there is untapped potential for mixing them with architectural design more fully, so they can not only reject indoor heat in a passive way, but also drive regular and healthy air changes.
“We found we could keep air temperatures several degrees below the ordinary temperature, and several degrees more below the reference ‘gold standard’ for passive cooling,” said Remy Fortin, lead author and PhD candidate at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture. “We did this without abandoning a healthy airing.” This was never a piece of cake, considering air exchanges are a source of heat when the aim is to keep a room cooler than the outside.
The researchers hope the findings will be used to positively impact communities suffering from dangerous climate heating and heat waves. “We hope that materials scientists, architects, and engineers will be interested in these results, and that our work will inspire more thorough thinking about how to connect breakthroughs in radiative cooling materials with simple but effective architectural solutions,” said Salmaan Craig, main investigator for the project and assistant professor at the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture.
12. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Monitor. B. Relieve. C. Control. D. Predict.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The effects of airing. B. The findings of the study.
C. The process of the research. D. The function of cool radiators.
14. What challenge did the researchers face according to Remy Fortin?
A. Guaranteeing the room a good airing. B. Reaching the reference gold standard.
C. Keeping the house cool without power. D. Combining passive cooling with air exchange.
15. What do the researchers desire to do with their findings?
A. Raise public awareness of cooling materials.
B. Appeal for stricter limits on greenhouse gases.
C. Improve humans’ living environments worldwide.
D. Strengthen materials science’s use in architecture.

Simply, you should try to get to know the ways in which that culture forms and influences its people’s values and behavior.
Lastly, you need to use what you have learned and come up with a strategy that will help you improve your CQ. You can expose yourself to various media. This is a useful and easily accessible way to learn about how culture affects behavior. Again, it helps if you learn the language of the culture. This may open a whole new world for you. ___20___

“Guess what!” he said. “I just saw a poster for the jack-o’-lantern (南瓜灯) design party in the Pumpkin Patch, and it’s not too far from here.”
“No way!” I said. “Can we go?”
“Pumpkin! Pumpkin! Party! Party!” chanted my little brother, Tex.
“Let’s go! But I’ve heard a rumor that something terrible happened there.” said my dad, worried.
Within minutes, Tex and I already jumped into the car and buckled up, ready to go. “I’m going to pick the gian test pumpkin,” said Tex.
“Giantest isn’t an actual word,” I said.
“I’ m going to pick the bestest pumpkin!” shouted Tex.
“I’m pretty sure bestest isn’t an actual word either.” I giggled. “I’m going to pick whichever pumpkin will make the scariest jack-o’-lantern.”
“All right, boys! Too much excitement! What if something really goes wrong?” my dad cut in.

Still no response.
Tex and I continued our excitement, giggling and chatting.
The drive was extra cool because we saw all kinds of Halloween decorations along the way.
“Look!” Tex said, pointing to twinkling orange lights and a flashing Pumpkin Patch sign.
“Yeah! Yes! It wasn’t too far a drive,” I said. “Watch out, pumpkins! Here we come!”
Coming into our sight were pumpkins of various sizes that lay in the patch.
“I pick that giant one!” Tex said, running over to pick it up. But just before he did, he said, “Ew! There’s a hole in it!” Tex quickly raced to another perfectly perfect pumpkin. But when he got closer, he said, “No fair! Someone took a bite.”

C. Britons try on clothes after online purchases.
D. Some Britons over-order and return clothes.
9. What’s Fashion Nova’s special service?
A. Renting top designers’ clothes.
B. Creating unique shopping experiences.
C. Offering customers single-use clothes.
D. Helping shoppers improve their clothing style.
10. What’s the idea behind the “capsule wardrobe”?
A. More choices and less trouble.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. D

No response. My dad continued, “If plan A fails, we can get creative and come up with Plan B!”

【答案】That’s when I noticed the Pumpkin Patch Closed sign. My heart sank as I turned to my dad, who looked just as disappointed. “What do we do now?” I asked, feeling a wave of sadness washing over me. But my dad smiled and said, “Don’t worry! We can still have fun. Let’s find a local store that sells pumpkins and create our own jack-o’-lanterns at home.” Tex’s eyes lit up at the idea, and he exclaimed, “Yeah! We can make them even scarier!”
Finally came our own jack-o’-lantern design party the next day. We gathered all the supplies: bright orange pumpkins, carving tools, and plenty of snacks. As we carved and decorated, laughter filled the air. Tex and I competed to see who could create the scariest face, while our parents were cheering us on. In the end, we had a row of unique jack-o’-lanterns, each with its own personality. The best part was that we made wonderful memories together, proving that even when plans change, we can always find joy in creativity and family time.
