In July 2020, over two nights and three days, with my wife, three kids and another family of camping friends, we enjoyed views of St. Vincent Gulf and a time made even more memorable by a ring.
My father had died four months earlier and I had been wearing a gold ring of his that was gifted to me. On the second day of our hike, as the rest of our group set off after lunch, I was walking at the back with my wife when I looked down at my hand where my dad’s ring usually was. It was gone.
I spent the next few minutes and hours being comforted by my friends and family and regretting how I could lose something so precious on a hiking trip. My friend encouraged me to search for my ring in my pack, which I did when we stopped for a drink. There was no ring.
We set up camp and settled in at Kingfisher Flat, the most beautiful campsite, sitting beside a flowing creek. That night I went to sleep and eventually reconciled that my ring was gone for good.
Finishing the hike the following day, back at Mambray Creek, my mate said we should have one last look for the ring at the campsite before setting off. I went along with the idea, especially given there were toilets nearby and it was a four-hour drive back to our home on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
As we approached our campsite our friends started searching around the grounds for the ring. I inspected our fuel gauge completely, while my eldest daughter walked to the fire ring where we’d been chatting and laughing. Seconds later I heard my daughter say “I’ve found it!”
I seriously could not believe what she’d said until she presented me with my dad’s ring. I accepted the ring, hugged my daughter and to this day find it hard to believe my dad’s ring was found. This precious chapter made the two nights hiking something I will never forget.

It’s the start of a new era of AI at Google, says CEO Sundar Pichai: the Gemini era. Gemini is Google’s latest large language model, which Pichai first mentioned at the I/O developer conference in June and is now releasing to the public. This significant advance in AI will ultimately impact almost all of Google’s products.
Gemini is more than a single AI model. There’s a lighter version called Gemini Nano meant for offline Android devices, a more powerful version called Gemini Pro that will power many Google AI services, and an even more capable model called Gemini Ultra — the most powerful LLM (大语言模型) Google has yet created. It seems to be mostly designed for data centers and enterprise applications.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022. Now Google is ready to fight back. “We’ve done a very thorough analysis of the systems side by side,” says CEO Sundar Pichai. Google ran 32 well-established criteria comparing the two models, from overall tests to the Python code generation. “I think we’re substantially (大量地) ahead on 30 out of 32 of those criteria.” he adds.
Gemini’s clearest advantage comes from its ability to understand and interact with video and audio. This was by design: multi-modality has been part of the plan from the beginning. Google built one multi-sensory model from the beginning, unlike OpenAI’s separate models for images and voice.
Right now, Gemini’s most basic models are text-based , but more advanced models like Gemini Ultra can work with images, video, and audio. “Over time,” Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says, “Gemini will gain more senses, become more aware, accurate, and grounded. These models just sort of understand better about the world around them.” These models still have other problems, but Hassabis says they will improve as they learn more.
28. What is Gemini according to the text?
A. A new language model in development.
B. A light AI model designed for offline use.
C. A new language model developed by Google.
D. A light AI model created for specific enterprise applications.
29. What does Gemini Nano specialize in?
A. Generating Python code. B. Running on offline Android devices.
C. Powering Google AI services. D. Training separate models for images and voice.
30. What is a key advantage of Gemini over OpenAI’s ChatGPT?
A. The ability to write Pyth on code.
B. The ability to work with video and audio.
C. The understanding and interaction with textual data.
D. The ability to create separate models for images and voice.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Google will bring the most advanced models.
B. Gemini models outperform OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
C. Google will still work on the perfection of Gemini models.
D. Gemini models are launched without even a slight imperfection.
D
Decision fatigue (决策疲劳) is a psychological phenomenon where the quality of decisions declines after a long session of decision-making. It is caused by the limited mental energy we have for making choices each day. While many of us believe we are logical beings capable of weighing every option carefully, decision fatigue shows how our mental resources can be used up over time.
One of the key studies on this phenomenon was conducted in the context of parole hearings (假释听证会). Researchers found that judges were more likely to approve of parole early in the day or after a meal break. As the day progressed and the judges made more decisions, they were increasingly likely to maintain their previous decisions, denying parole simply because it required less mental effort.
Decision fatigue not only affects major life choices but also everyday decisions. For instance, people often report struggling to decide what to eat for dinner after a long day. Similarly, too many choices, such as when looking through streaming platforms or online stores, can leave individuals feeling confused, leading them to abandon the process entirely or settle for a less satisfying option.
To overcome decision fatigue, some well-known figures have adopted strategies to simplify their daily routines. For example, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is famous for wearing the same style of gray T-shirts to minimize unnecessary choices. Similarly, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein was known for owing multiple identical suits to avoid wasting energy on deciding what to wear each day. In a different context, author Haruki Murakami has shared that he maintains a strict daily routine, including specific writing hours and exercise, to free up mental capacity for his creative work.
Understanding decision fatigue can help us structure our lives more effectively. Prioritizing important decisions earlier in the day or setting up routines to minimize unnecessary choices are strategies to preserve mental energy. By managing our mental resources wisely, we can make sound decisions and reduce the stress associated with overwhelming choices.
32. What leads to decision fatigue according to the text?
A. The lack of time to make decisions.
B. The difficulty of making logical choices.
C. The stress from making important decisions.
D. The limited mental energy for decision-making.
33. What does the study on parole hearings reveal?
A. Judges are much stricter after long breaks.
B. Decision fatigue can lead to unfair outcomes.
C. Fatigue causes judges to avoid complicated cases.
D. External factors have no impact on decision-making.
34. What does the author suggest readers shopping online do?
A. Make quick decisions. B. Compare different products.
C. Limit the number of choices. D. Choose the most popular products.
35. What is the purpose of adopting routines?
A. To reduce the stress of daily work. B. To increase decision-making quality.
C. To enhance overall life satisfaction. D. To create more decision-making chances

The shape of Australia’ s school system is undergoing a significant change. Enrollments (入学人数) in independent schools are growing, while fewer students are going to public schools. Why are more families choosing an independent school, when they could send their children to a free public option? 36
One reason may be policy changes that allowed the establishment of new independent schools in Australia. In the 1990s, the Howard government changed a policy to allow funding for the establishment of new schools, even in areas that already had adequate capacity in existing schools.
New independent schools tend to charge lower fees than established elite schools. 37 According to Independent Schools Australia, the largest growth in enrollments is in schools charging fees of around A$5,000 per year.
38 New South Wales Education Minister Prue Car has spoken about this issue for her own son, who attends an independent primary school: “We were in one of the suburbs where the government didn’t build a school.”
Compared to other countries, Australian schools have a high level of “socioeconomic segregation(社会经济隔离)”. 39 The increase in students going to fee-paying private schools means we are seeing increasing segregation in our school system.
Public schools continue to educate the majority of children in remote locations. 40 Independent schools enroll increasing proportions of students from the most advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
A. What account for this shift?
B. How should we deal with this shift?
C. They are those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
D. That makes them more accessible to middle-income families.
E. Parents will naturally choose what they perceive to be the best school.
F. This means different types of schools have students from different backgrounds.
G. In some cases, state governments are slow to build new public schools in suburbs.

阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
To some people, the clatter of restaurant kitchens might be like an orchestra; to me, such sounds behind the swinging doors just meant chaos(紊乱). However unpleasant I felt the places were, I decided to apply for a part-time job at a popular restaurant. The reason was simple: I needed money. I wanted to join a camping trip to the Blue Mountains with my friends, but that would cost about 150 dollars. “You have to pay for entertainment by yourself,” my parents said.
So I applied, and Mr. Smith, the boss of the restaurant, allowed me to have a try. My job was super easy and boring: the newly prepared dishes would be put at the counter(柜台)between the kitchen and dining room, and it was my duty to deliver them to the right customers.
The first few days were tiring but OK. However, setbacks(挫折)soon followed as I struggled to keep pace during a particularly busy lunch rush. I awkwardly spilled a tray of drinks, making loud noises and the floor messy. I was embarrassed and began to feel nervous. One evening, I mixed up orders for a large party, causing chaos and frustration.
I felt desperate. I screwed everything up. Then I heard Mr. Smith call me, and I went into his office with my head low. To my surprise, he didn’t blame me. Instead, he made me a cup of coffee. “Relax, young man,” he said. “Try to smile. Things always go wrong if you can’t really enjoy what you’re doing. Feel the fun in the job, and you’ll be OK!”
I thought he was right. The next day when I was working, I glimpsed into the kitchen and was amazed: in the narrow and crowded space everyone was busy — the chefs swirling (翻动) pans, the manager yelling customers’ requirements (要求), others coming and going with dishes to deliver — but everything went smoothly without any lumping or bumping. This was incredible!
Paragraph 1:My attitudes towards the restaurant job began to change.
Paragraph 2:On the last day of my contract(合同), I went into Mr. Smith’s office again when I finished my job.
