A Mr. Selfridge, the Wisconsin⁃born retailer (零售商) who left school at 14, rose to become a partner in Marshall Field􀆳s, Chicago. Founded in 1852, it was one of the first and most ambitious US department stores. Mr. Selfridge had done well with Marshall Field􀆳s. He liked to say, “The customer is always right,” which made the Chicago store popular. And he is believed to have invented the phrase “Only (so many) Shopping Days until Christmas”. When he visited London on holiday in 1906 he was surprised to find most of the city􀆳s department stores were no match of their American and Parisian competitors. This led Selfridge to leave the US and establish Selfridges, a department store named after him, at the west end of London􀆳s Oxford Street. In Oxford Street, Selfridge􀆳s design team shaped an ambitious classical palace building with a wall of plate glass windows. Opened in 1909, Selfridges offered customers a hundred departments along with restaurants, a roof garden, reading and writing rooms, reception areas for foreign visitors, a first aid room and most importantly, a small army of knowledgeable floor⁃walking assistants who served as guides as well as being thoroughly instructed in the art of making a sale. Mr. Selfridge did much to make the department store a destination rather than just a big and comprehensively stocked city shop. It became a place to meet and for ladies to lunch. Mr. Selfridge later introduced the department store as a key element of the 20th century culture, and Chaplin acknowledged the growing trend for shopping in the department store in his film The Floorwalker. 1.What can be learned about Mr. Selfridge from paragraph 1? A. The broad choice of goods. B. The large number of departments. C. The small group of guards. D. The well⁃trained sales guides. 根据第三段中的“and most importantly, a small army of knowledgeable floor⁃walking assistants who served as guides as well as being thoroughly instructed in the art of making a sale”(最重要的是,还有一小群知识渊博的走楼助手,他们既是导购,又在销售艺术中受到全面的指导)可知,塞尔福里奇百货公司给人印象最深的特点是训练有素的销售向导。故选D。 3.What is the main purpose of the article? A. To encourage shoppers to spend more. B. To introduce the history of Selfridge. C. To compare different department stores. D. Sometimes you want to be accepted; instead, you􀆳re singled out and judged. In 2015, when I became the first plus⁃size designer to win Project Runway, I hoped it would be a moment not only for inclusive fashion, but also for all other fat human beings out there. It wasn􀆳t just me who had won; we􀆳d won. Many women told me they were afraid to wear bright colors or show off their arms until they saw me doing it. But some of the words on the Internet were terrible: “Why did they pick that fat designer?” “How can she encourage such an unhealthy lifestyle?” My positive psychology was affected. I got sad and negative and put on more weight. I reached a point where I couldn􀆳t climb stairs without losing my breath. I finally realized that if I didn􀆳t take care of myself, I couldn􀆳t keep doing what I loved, so I went to see a doctor and started doing exercise every day. After that I got more judgments, this time from people in the fat group who once supported me. They turned their backs on me and said, “You can􀆳t be body positive and still losing weight.” I thought, “Well, why not? I wasn􀆳t trying to be ‘prettier’; I wanted to have control of my life.” Size should not divide us, whether we are fat, thin, or anywhere in the between. I􀆳m designing clothes for plus women, but one day I might be open to designing straight (直筒型的) sizes. People judge me for that, too. But I just want to create clothes that make people feel good. I want every woman to love herself and go after her dreams like I did. 好词:①single out单独挑出;②judgment n.看法;判断;③go after 追求;④look up to仰视 4.What was the author􀆳s hope after she won Project Runway? A. She lost interest in fashion. B. She lost control of her body. C. She stopped wearing bright colors. D. She decided to have a healthy lifestyle. 根据第一段中的“I got sad and negative and put on more weight. I reached a point where I couldn􀆳t climb stairs without losing my breath.” B。 6.What was fat people􀆳s attitude to the author when she started losing weight? A. Dissatisfied. B. Uninterested. C. They laughed at her. D. They couldn􀆳t believe it. 根据第二段中的“After that I got more judgments, this time from people in the fat group who once supported me. They turned their backs on me and said, ‘You can􀆳t be body positive and still losing weight.’” A。 7.In which part of a newspaper might this passage appear? A. Environment. B. Medicine. C. Career. D. Entertainment. C When we talk about positive thinking, we often use terms having to do with our hearts — open heart, pure heart or joyful heart. But new research from Duke University is making a closer connection, finding that a positive attitude may be helpful to people who have angina (心绞痛), a common heart condition. Symptoms of this condition include chest pain or pressure because the heart is not receiving sufficient oxygen. Patients who displayed optimistic thought patterns, including having positive expectations about recovery, were 40 percent less likely to be hospitalized or require surgery than those who were not optimistic, according to the study. The researchers collected data from 2,400 patients who had diagnoses of angina. An interesting additional finding from the patients􀆳 questionnaires was that the most optimistic patients were also the least likely to have histories of heart attack, heart failure or heart disease. The researchers did not declare a causal relationship between positive thinking and better heart disease outcomes, however. There are multiple possible reasons for the results of the study, including the idea that patients who are healthier to begin with are more likely to expect to recover and regain good health. But the study does represent a new way of looking at the situation. Now, in addition to a body of research that examines the relationship between depression and heart health, there is a new way of inquiry that asks whether positive thinking could be used as a strategy to improve outcomes. Lead researcher Alexander Fanaroff, a fellow in the department of cardiology (心脏病学) at the Duke University Medical Center, told the Duke Chronicle that his next research question will find ways to improve attitudes among heart patients. Perhaps his subjects could reflect on the words of the writer Anthony J. D􀆳Angelo: “Smile — it is the key that fits the lock of everybody􀆳s heart.” 8.How can people with angina get better according to the study? A. By expecting more. B. By thinking positively. C. By getting timely surgery. D. By taking more exercise. 根据第一段中的“But new research from Duke University is making a closer connection, finding that a positive attitude may be helpful to people who have angina(心绞痛),a common heart condition.” B。 9.What may be Alexander Fanaroff􀆳s next research? A. To explore how to improve patients􀆳 attitudes. B. To find out the ways to treat heart patients. C. To learn the causes of heart diseases. D. To test if positive attitudes help with health. 根据倒数第二段中的“his next research question will find ways to improve attitudes among heart patients”可知,Alexander Fanaroff下一步的研究可能是探讨如何改善患者的态度。 10.What can we learn from the text? A. Optimistic people hardly get heart attack. B. People􀆳s attitudes decide their overall health. C. How positive thinking benefits heart health is unclear. D. The reason why patients recover well is that they have no depression. 根据第四段中的“patients who are healthier to begin with are more likely to expect to recover and regain good health”可知,一开始就更健康的患者更可能期望恢复健康并且也更可能恢复良好的健康,即人们的积极态度决定了他们的整体健康状况。故选B。 11.What may be the best title of the text? A. Keep positive to get rid of illness B. Angina, a kind of serious condition C. Depression, a key cause of heart attack D. Positive thinking makes hearts healthier 答案与解析 D 主旨大意题。 D The younger generation, according to a new survey, can hardly remember the last time of climbing trees or flying kites,as they are kept indoors and short of outdoor experiences. The survey of 1,000 people found that the current generation of 15⁃to 34⁃year⁃olds have fewer memories of 12 key countryside activities such as swimming in the rivers or going fishing. The research found that three quarters of the older generation remembered playing games or climbing trees, compared with two thirds of younger adults. The 55+ generation also had more memories of collecting stones, visiting a farm or pond dipping. Altogether, two thirds of older people had more memories of playing outdoors compared to just over half of the younger generation. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) carried out the study at the start of the school term to stress the growing worry that children are not getting outdoors enough. The study has found that 82 percent of people think that schools should provide more outdoor education and most believe nature is still important to children today. Dr Mike Clarke, head of the RSPB,said children who are usually kept indoors are easier to get “nature deficit disorder”.He said public money should be used to take children on day trips to nature and to build wildlife gardens, especially in poor areas. “To many people,it would seem clear and unquestionable that an important part of childhood is exploring the world around you. Unfortunately, this is far from the fact and the children are having less time and fewer chances to get close to nature,” he said. “The RSPB has more than a 40⁃year history in getting children outdoors and is still continuing to play our role. We now need the government and the schools to realize that they should play the most important role in making it possible for all the children to experience, enjoy and benefit from the outdoor environment.” 好词:①be short of缺少;②unquestionable adj. 12.Compared with the current generation, the older generation had .  A. more homework and exercises when they were children B. more memories of wonderful life in the countryside C. fewer memories of taking part in outdoor activities D. fewer chances of going on a visit to the big cities 答案与解析 B 细节理解题。 B。 13.The RSPB carried out the study in order to tell people to .  A. spend more time with their kids B. care more about the kids􀆳 growth C. let their kids get more outdoor activities D. order the schools to provide outdoor education 答案与解析 C 推理判断题。 C。 14.According to the passage,“nature deficit disorder” often happens to .  A. children who often stay indoors B. children who often go outdoors C. all the younger generation D. all the older generation 答案与解析 A 细节理解题。根据第七段中的“children who are usually kept indoors are easier to get ‘nature deficit disorder’”可知,长期待在室内的孩子更容易得“自然缺失症”,故选A。 15.We can learn from Dr Clarke􀆳s words in the last paragraph that .  A. all the children can􀆳t get close to nature and aren􀆳t healthy any longer B. outdoor activities are the most important for the current generation C. the RSPB is more important than the government and schools in getting kids outdoors D. the RSPB plays an important role in getting kids outdoors all the time 答案与解析 D 推理判断题。 If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed! With such busy lives, it can be hard to try and find the time to work out. 16 Working out in the morning provides additional benefits beyond being physically fit.   Your productivity is improved. Exercising makes you more awake and ready to handle whatever is ahead of you for the day. 17   Your metabolism (新陈代谢) gets a head start. 18 If you work out in the mornings, then you will be getting the calorie (卡路里) burning benefits for the whole day, not in your sleep.    19 Studies found that people who woke up early for exercise slept better than those who exercised in the evening. Who would want to ruin their good workout by eating junk food? You will want to continue to focus on positive choices.   There are a lot of benefits to working out, especially in the mornings. Set your alarm clock an hour early and push yourself to work out! You will feel energized all day long. A. You will stick to your diet. B. Your quality of sleep improves. C. I won the first prize! This reminds me of all your kind help again. Do you still remember the trees we planted together on the hill behind the school? Yesterday we went there and watered them. The tree you planted yourself is growing well, and the whole class decided to name it Sue Wood. Will you come back to see Sue Wood? How is everything with you lately? We hope to know more about you and your American students. I sincerely express my thanks to your help again and hope to keep in close touch. Best wishes for you! Brodie and his father lived in a caravan (宿营拖车) ever since his mother died and they lost their house. Now they worked for Miss Martha in the garden. Brodie􀆳s father had been a famous violin player. Brodie loved to watch how his father made the bow dance and glide (滑动) across the strings. When he turned 12, his father taught him how to play the instrument properly. Brodie was a fast learner and soon he could play the violin almost as well as his dad. One day, Miss Samson, Brodie􀆳s teacher, asked if anyone could play the violin. A talent scout (星探) was coming to school. He was looking for someone to play in the musical Mr Spy. Hollie Larson􀆳s hand went up fast. “I can play the violin,” she said. “I play in competitions.” Brodie kept quiet, but his friend Cam said, “Brodie has a violin and he can play it too.” Brodie slid down in his seat. There was no way he would be good enough to play for an audience. He wasn􀆳t going to make a fool of himself. Hollie Larson was good at everything. “Bring your instruments tomorrow for a trial run,” the teacher said. “And oh, if you are selected, the pay is good!” Brodie􀆳s father let him take the violin. “But do take good care of it, Brodie,” he said. Hollie Larson offered to play first. She was good, really good. Brodie suddenly felt embarrassed. There was no way he could play after her. But Miss Samson􀆳s voice was demanding. “Brodie,” she said. “Your turn!” Brodie felt his face got hot as he pulled out the violin. But the minute the bow touched the strings, Brodie was transported to a different world. He was back in Martha􀆳s garden listening to his father. The room was silent as Brodie walked back to his seat. And then came the applause, everyone clapping, except Hollie Larson. Since the talent scout would come the next morning, Brodie decided to put the violin case on a high shelf in the classroom that night. It was the safest place, he thought. But, he was wrong! The next morning when he arrived, he found the case had fallen.             Suddenly, Hollie Larson walked toward him, holding out her violin—“Use mine,” she said.             范文 One possible version: The next morning when he arrived, he found the case had fallen. Brodie could hardly believe his eyes. The neck of the violin was broken. That was when the talent scout came into the room. “Your teacher tells me there is real talent here,” he said, looking around. “I􀆳m looking forward to hearing you.” Again, it was Hollie Larson who played first. Brodie listened but seemed to hear nothing. He saw that the talent scout smiled and whispered something to Miss Samson. When it was Brodie􀆳s turn, Brodie lowered his head and explained his situation, overwhelmed by a wave of sadness. Suddenly, Hollie Larson walked toward him, holding out her violin—“Use mine,” she said. Brodie was stunned. Hollie really longed to win, but now she was offering him a chance. He had thought it was she who damaged his violin! He shook his head, but she insisted. “If you can􀆳t play, that􀆳s not a real win.” Casting a grateful glance at her, Brodie took over the violin. While playing, he felt his inner world coming back to peace. The talent scout was on his feet, smiling and clapping. So Brodie won the selection and was to play the violin in Mr Spy. Hollie didn􀆳t win, but she and Brodie became true friends.
