Vincent Van Gogh (凡·高), for whom colour was the main symbol of expression, was born in Groot Zundert, Holland in 1853. He was brought up in a cultured family. Vincent was highly emotional and wasnt self⁃confident. Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, Van Gogh had two unhappy love stories and worked unsuccessfully in Belgium. He remained there to study art, and decided to give happiness by creating beauty. Of the works of his early Dutch period, the most famous is The Potato Eaters.
In 1886 he went to Paris to join his brother Théo, manager of Goupils gallery. In Paris, Van Gogh studied with Cormon, later met Pissarro, Monet, and Gauguin, and began to lighten his very dark palette (调色板). His nervousness made him a difficult person to get along with and night⁃long discussions and painting all day undermined his health. He decided to go south to Arles where he hoped his friends would join him and help set up a school of art. Gauguin did join him but with bad results. Near the end of 1888, Van Gogh ran after Gauguin with an open razor (剃须刀), but was stopped by him, ending up cutting a part of his own ear off. It led Gauguin to finally leave Arles.
In the May of 1890, Van Gogh seemed much better and went to live in Auvers⁃sur⁃Oise under the eye of Dr Gachet. Two months later he was dead, having shot himself “for the good of all”. During his life he had sold one painting. Van Goghs finest works were produced in less than three years.

Michaels real musical genius lay in the fact that he could create entire songs in his head and use his vocal abilities to convey each part or instrument to people who would be playing the song. He spoke many times about the fact that he had tunes crop up in his mind at all hours of the day and night and either sang them immediately into his trademark tape recorder or beatboxed the song out loud to his collaborators. He never learned how to read music so it was really an instinct (本能) for him. And until we know more about how the brain works, I dont think its possible to fully understand his musical gifts.
I would say that Michael Jackson felt music throughout his entire being. One cannot talk about his skills as a musician separate from his skills as a dancer. From early on in his solo career, he would judge a song based on whether the music made him want to dance. He was famous for dancing in the studio while he was singing and his brilliant music engineer, Bruce Swedien, built Michael a special platform so that he could dance while recording. Swedien also kept a lot of Jacksons dancing sounds in the recordings. Whether he tapped, finger popped or clapped, the sounds became an active part of the music.
As to Michael Jacksons songwriting, I dont think hes ever received enough credit. If you listen to the progression of his skills in this area you cannot help but be impressed. Technically, he knew everything about how to make a great song and between his lyrical abilities, his musical instincts and his actual performance as a singer, he cannot be touched.
