A Journey Through the World of Art
Art is one of the greatest gifts of humanity. In very early times, primitive artists painted simple pictures full of mythology and mystery on cave walls. Later, the noble families of Europe began to purchase paintings as a sign of their social rank. During the Middle Ages, painters believed strongly in Christianity, so their pictures showed religious stories instead of looking realistic. They used gold and bright colours, and the figures often looked flat and two-dimensional.
The breakthrough came with the Renaissance, when artists studied nature carefully. Their paintings gained a new dimension of depth and light, and painters like da Vinci became influential, winning lasting reputation. This period was deeply humanistic, celebrating the value of every person. Artists learned to convey emotion through face and hands, showing the subjective feelings of the characters. We still admire their precise brushwork; precisely because of their genius, the art has survived. A painter had a wealthy client who paid for the work. In those days, fine art meant painting and sculpture, and a gifted sculptor could turn stone into a living figure. Fond of his garden; any true lover of art will be fond of it, with its water lily floating on the quiet pond, the pond, in particular, became the heart of his most famous works. Other painters built arched halls, and the arch of a doorway could frame a beautiful view. Studying under a master was a wise investment for a young artist, because it gave him skill and friends. Masters taught their students to see the world with visual imagination and to find beauty in ordinary scenes.
Photography pushed painting in a new direction. The painters of impressionism tried to catch the changing light at sunrise. What truly set them apart was their bold use of colour, and their style was far from the old realism; a true realist might have thought their pictures unfinished. Later, the bold movement of Cubism broke objects into outer shapes and sharp angles. Every subsequent generation added something new. A great masterpiece never really declines in value; it usually gains greater recognition over time.Buddhism across Asia carried the Buddhist faith to many lands, and the expansion of the Silk Road spread paintings and ideas across the world. Chinese painters love to work with ink, and a few simple lines can bring a whole mountain to life a whole mountain. Modern Chinese animation has won international praise, and every frame is as carefully made as a painting. A great work of art is like a symphony; even a simple vase of bronze or ceramic can be worthy of a museum. Such beauty will always be worthy of our lifelong study.
A great work of art remains permanent in people's memory, and the artist may build a memorial to himself. Even a humble young painter, working with patience, can emerge from the crowd. His success will guarantee that beauty continues, and a contemporary artist stands on the shoulders of the past. Sometimes a wealthy man gives his young bride paintings as a wedding gift. Visitors may criticise a modern work, but such criticism is not always fair, because art is often a representative voice of its time. When we study a great painting, we should respect the artistic skill and the civil order behind it. An art exhibition offers everyone a warm welcome, and the entry to the hall begins a beautiful journey.

Last Saturday, our class went to the National Art Museum for a special exhibition of Western painting. A long line of excited students stood outside the gate, waiting for the museum to open. As soon as we passed through the entry hall, I was deeply impressed by the beautiful sculpture in the middle of the room. A kind guide told us that the museum had spent a large sum of money on this purchase, because the works inside were truly priceless treasures of art.
The first room showed the art of the Middle Ages, when painters used gold and bright colours to express their deep belief in Christianity. The figures in those old pictures looked flat, because the artists had not yet learned how to give them a third dimension of depth and light.
The next room was the Renaissance hall, and here the paintings looked completely different. The artists had studied nature and the human body with great care, so their portraits appeared almost lifelike; in fact, one portrait of an old man was so lifelike that I felt he might blink and speak at any moment. Realistic that viewers could almost feel him breathing. The guide explained that these painters wanted to show the humanity of their subjects, not only their holy side, and that their whole spirit was deeply humanistic. A great master such as Leonardo da Vinci enjoyed a very high reputation, and his patient study of light gave his pictures a new feeling of depth and life.
In the third room we saw the art of the nineteenth century. After the invention of photography, painters no longer needed to copy the world exactly, so many of them turned to a freer and more personal style.
The Impressionists, for example, loved to paint in the open air and to catch the changing light at sunrise, using short, quick strokes to express their own feelings. Their bold new style was at first attacked with sharp criticism, but in time it won wide recognition and changed the direction of art forever.
We also saw ancient ceramic vases and a shining bronze bowl, each of them worthy of careful study. The guide told us that a famous painter had donated his whole collection to the museum, and that the museum would guarantee the safety of every piece forever. When I walked out of the hall that afternoon, I understood the true value of art: it lies not in money, but in the joy it brings to every ordinary viewer who loves beauty.
1. Why did the museum spend a large sum of money on the purchase?
A. Because the works inside were truly priceless treasures of art.
B. Because the guide wanted to buy new furniture.
C. Because the students asked the museum to do so.
D. Because the paintings were made of gold and silver.
2. What does the underlined word "realistic" in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. So lifelike that it looks real.
B. Too bright and colourful.
C. Old and broken.
D. Difficult to understand.
3. What can we infer about the Impressionists from Paragraph 3?
A. They copied the world exactly like the old painters.
B. They painted in a freer, more personal style after photography.
C. They refused to use any colours in their paintings.
D. They never won any recognition at all.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How to paint a beautiful picture at home.
B. A visit to an art museum that taught the writer the history and value of art.
C. The story of a famous painter's daily life.
D. Why photography replaced painting completely.
