Lying in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, the fishing village Huatulco is home to nine bays, 36 beaches and thousands of baby turtles that apparently needed me. I had three open days and a desire to save some turtles. And so, away I went to Huatulco with Wildcoast, a group of champions-for-change who were protecting coastal and marine ecosystem in the U.S. and Mexico.
I was taken to La Escobilla to experience Wildcoast in action. This protected beach, one hour north of Huatulco, is where mass turtle nesting happens, lasting just four days during rainy season, hundreds of thousands of female sea turtles swinging their way ashore to lay their eggs.
Between threats of dogs, crabs, development and oil spills, the little creatures have the whole world against them. As recently as 2002, turtles hunting was not only a common practice, but an important part of the culture and diet in the Oaxaca communities. Luckily, Wildcoast rescues turtle eggs and recreates habitats by monitoring temperatures and humidity. Thanks to their efforts, the sea turtles have made a major comeback, with now over 72 million turtles being born on the beaches that Wildcoast protects.
I got to hold 50 of the tiny creatures in a bowl. Despite an average laying of 100 eggs, just one in 1,000 baby turtles will make it to adulthood. It was time to liberate (解放) those little creatures. Out spilled the creatures, some moving full steam ahead while others barely moved in place. Literally, hundreds of them began to spread out across the beach.
With each set of waves, we witnessed the survival of the fittest, some pushing past the whitewash while others crashed back to shore. Their fight for life made my eyes wet. A flock of birds were ready to dive into the sea for their moving targets. “One in 1,000.” Nature was cruel. After 30 long minutes, the last creature made his way to the sea.
24. What do we know about the Wildcoast?
A. It is a fishing village. B. It is a national natural reserve.
C. It is located in Huatulco. D. It aims to preserve marine ecosystem.
25. The baby turtles are threatened by various factors except ________.
A. the cruel hunters B. the rapid development
C. the extreme weather D. the oil-polluted ocean
26. What do the underlined words “full steam ahead” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. With slow pace and fear. B. With all energy and enthusiasm.
C. With full warning and curiosity. D. With great satisfaction and responsibility.
27. What can we learn from the author’s experience in saving baby turtles?
A. Think twice before you leap. B. Stop struggling and you stop living.
C. Always prepare for a rainy day. D. When the buying stops, the killing can too.

Having trouble falling asleep? It’s common to blame the phone that’s just inches from your face and the constant updates you keep scrolling (滚动) through as you lie in bed. But the idea that the blue light from your smartphone is what’s keeping you awake isn’t quite right.
While blue-or short-wavelength light — such as daylight or that emitted (发出) by tech — does affect our body’s internal clock, things are less clear-cut than we often think.
“Sleep is a very complex process,” says Stuart Peirson, a professor of circadian neuroscience (昼夜节律神经科学) at Oxford University.
He explains that the part of our eyes that tells our brain when it’s time to be awake is triggered (触发) by cells that absorb (吸收) blue light. However, it’s also triggered by cells that absorb longer wavelengths of light (such as red). This means it’s not the color of the light that’s the problem, it’s the brightness and length of time we’re exposed (暴露) to it. The screens of our phones, in fact, are not very bright.
Sunlight is 1,000 times brighter than the average light emitted by a phone. Room lighting is, on average, 10 times brighter. This is why turning off the big light as you get ready for bed can help you feel sleepier.
“Technically, blue light from smartphones can affect sleep,” says Peirson. “But these effects are small unless you are using your phone for hours with a very bright screen and already have sleep problems.” In studies done at Harvard University, even using an e-reader with the brightness turned up for four hours only caused a small delay in falling asleep — just 10 minutes. In fact, your sleep is more likely to be affected by the kinds of content you’re looking at.
If you think light is impacting your sleep, Peirson says you don’t need to spend money on special“blue-light blocking” glasses. Instead, he suggests decreasing your screen time and turning down the brightness on your phone.
28. What is commonly blamed for causing trouble falling asleep?
A. The brightness of room lighting.
B. The constant updates on smartphones.
C. The content on electronic devices.
D. The colors of the light from electronic screens.
29. What does Stuart Peirson say about how light affects sleep?
A. Red light is the main reason affecting sleep.
B. Blue light strongly affects sleep no matter how bright it is.
C. Light’s brightness and length of exposure are more important than color in affecting sleep.
D. Only blue light affects the part of our eyes that influences sleep.
30. What does Stuart Peirson suggest doing if you believe light is affecting your sleep?
A. Buying special “blue-light blocking” glasses.
B. Turning off all electronic devices before bed.
C. Decreasing screen time and lowering its brightness.
D. Avoiding using electronic devices during the day.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The effects of blue light on sleep are made to seem bigger than they are.
B. Special glasses are necessary to block blue light.
C. Sunlight is the most important reason affecting sleep.
D. The color of the light emitted by electronic devices decides sleep quality.

A new study published in the journal Science Advances finds that AI enhances creativity by boosting the novelty of story ideas as well as the “usefulness” of stories — their ability to engage the target audience and potential for publication. It finds that AI “professionalizes” stories, making them more enjoyable, more likely to have plot twists, better written and less boring.
In a study, 300 participants were tasked with writing a short, eight-sentence “micro story” for a target audience of young adults. They were divided into three groups: one group was allowed no Ad help, a second group could use ChatGPT to provide a single three-sentence starting idea, and writers in the third group could choose from up to five AI-generated ideas for their inspiration.
They then asked 600 people to judge how good the stories were assessing them for novelty and “usefulness”. They found that writers with the most access to AI experienced the greatest gains to their creativity, their stories scoring 8.1% higher for novelty and 9% higher for novelty compared with stories written without AI. Writers who used up to five AI-generated ideas also scored higher for emotional characteristics, producing stories that were better written, more enjoyable, less boring and funnier.
The researchers evaluated the writers’ creativity using a Divergent Association Task (DAT) and found that more creative writers — those with the highest DAT scores — benefited least from generative AI ideas.
Less creative writers conversely saw a greater increase in creativity: access to five AI ideas improved novelty by 10.7% and usefulness by 11.5% compared with those who used no AI ideas. Their stories were judged to be up. to 26.6% better written, up to 22.6% more enjoyable and up to 15.2% less boring.
Anil Doshi, Assistant Professor at the UCL School said, “While these results point to an increase in individual creativity, there is risk of losing collective novelty. If the publishing industry were to use more generative AI-inspired stories, our findings suggest that the stories would become less unique and more similar to each other. That is not encouraged in writing.”
32. What were some participants assigned to do in the study?
A. Help targeted young writers. B. Improve some less creative works.
C. Create a mini story for young men. D. Use AI to judge the quality of stories.
33 Who benefited most from the AI-assisted writing in the study?
A. Those using AI most. B. Those of most creativity.
C. Those with the help of ChatGPT. D. Those writing the most.
34. What might be Anil Doshi’s attitude toward the AI-assisted writing?
A. Optimistic. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
35 What can be the best title for the passage?
A. AI Is Being Used to Create Novel Stories Nowadays
B. AI Is Catching on But Threatening the Future of Writers
C. AI Can Boost Creativity in Writing But Has Its Disadvantages
D. AI Helps Improve Writing Skills But Is Limited to Young Writers

When the tragedy struck me during the Depression (大萧条), my father did the only thing he could.
The tragedy happened in the year 1933. I was only 6 years old when I was rushed to the hospital with two crushed feet. My parents were told I might never walk again.
The accident happened when I was sitting in front of our house in Lowell, Massachusetts. I was playing in a puddle (水坑) after a rainstorm when I felt a huge weight on my feet. When I looked up, there was a car tire on my feet. I cried out, but the motor was running and no one could hear me over the engine.
The driver had run across the street for a newspaper. When he got back to his car, he drove away — never knowing he had parked on my feet.
Just about then, our neighbor’s son came home and saw me bent over my feet in pain. He immediately carried me home, and I remember thinking how tall and strong he was.
An ambulance came, and I remained in the hospital for 3 weeks while my feet were “repaired”. When I returned home, I could hardly walk.
I sat in our bay window and watched the children play on the street and longed to join them...but I couldn’t. I felt so left out despite my parents’ company.
My parents were told that if I was ever to walk again, I’d need treatment, which in those days meant riding a tricycle (三轮车) to strengthen the muscle and eventually get my feet back into condition for walking.
Our family couldn’t afford such an expensive thing. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove.
Dad couldn’t afford the bus fare and on cold winter days he walked 7 miles every day in his only winter coat to get to work. No, there was no money for a tricycle. I would be a disabled person all my life.
Paragraph 1:
Then one day, while sitting at my usual place in the window, I saw my father walking up the street carrying a tricycle on his shoulder.
Paragraph 2:
It was many years later before I learned where and how Dad had got the tricycle.

B
C It is located in Huatulco.
D 25. C 26. B 27. B
根据第一段中“And so, away I went to Huatulco with Wildcoast, a group of champions-for-change who were protecting coastal and marine ecosystem in the U.S. and Mexico. (于是,我和Wildcoast一同前往瓦图尔科,这是一群致力于推动改变的倡导者,他们在美国和墨西哥致力于保护沿海和海洋生态系统)”可知,Wildcoast是一个致力于保护海洋生态系统的组织。故选D项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Between threats of dogs, crabs, development and oil spills, the little creatures have the whole world against them. As recently as 2002, turtles hunting was not only a common practice, but an important part of the culture and diet in the Oaxaca communities.
根据最后一段“With each set of waves, we witnessed the survival of the fittest, some pushing past the whitewash while others crashed back to shore. Their fight for life made my eyes wet. A flock of birds were ready to dive into the sea for their moving targets. “One in 1,000.” Nature was cruel. After 30 long minutes, the last creature made his way to the sea. A.
C
B 29. C 30. C 31. A
根据第一段中的“It’s common to blame the phone that’s just inches from your face and the constant updates you keep scrolling (滚动) through as you lie in bed. (人们通常把入睡困难归咎于离脸只有几英寸远的手机以及躺在床上不断浏览持续更新的信息。)”可知,智能手机的信息不断更新导致了人们难以入睡。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“This means it’s not the color of the light that’s the problem, it’s the brightness and length of time we’re exposed (暴露) to it. The screens of our phones, in fact, are not very bright. (这意味着问题不在于光线的颜色,而在于亮度和我们暴露在光线下的时间。事实上,我们手机的屏幕并不是很亮。)”可推断,Peirson 认为在影响睡眠方面,光的亮度和暴露时间比光的颜色更重要。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“If you think light is impacting your sleep, Peirson says you don’t need to spend money on special ‘blue-light blocking’ glasses. Instead, he suggests decreasing your screen time and turning down the brightness on your phone.
A“The effects of blue light on sleep are made to seem bigger than they are.(蓝光对睡眠的影响似乎被夸大了)”最能概括文章的主旨。故选A。
D
They then asked 600 people to judge how good the stories were, assessing them for novelty and “usefulness”.
33. Who benefited most from the AI-assisted writing in the study?
A. Those using AI most. B. Those of most creativity.
C. Those with the help of ChatGPT. D. Those writing the most.
34. What might be Anil Doshi’s attitude toward the AI-assisted writing?
A. Optimistic. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
35. What can be the best title for the passage?
C 33. A 34. B 35. C
根据第二段“ In a study, 300 participants were tasked with writing a short, eight-sentence “micro story” for a target audience of young adults.(在一项研究中,300名参与者被要求为年轻成人写一个简短的八句话的“微型故事”)”可知,参与者被要求为年轻成人写一个微型故事。
根据第三段“They found that writers with the most access to AI experienced the greatest gains to their creativity, their stories scoring 8.1% higher for novelty and 9% higher for novelty compared with stories written without AI.(他们发现,接触人工智能最多的作家在创造力方面获得了最大的提升,他们的故事在新颖性方面得分比没有使用人工智能写作的故事高出8.1%,在创新性方面高出9%)”可知,那些得到AI帮助最多的参与者写出的故事更具创意性,他们获益最大。故选A。
根据末段Anil Doshi的话“While these results point to an increase in individual creativity, there is risk of losing collective novelty. If the publishing industry were to use more generative AI-inspired stories, our findings suggest that the stories would become less unique and more similar to each other. That is not encouraged in writing.(虽然这些结果表明个人创造力有所提高,但也存在失去集体创新性的风险。如果出版行业更多地使用由生成式AI启发的故事,我们的研究发现这些故事会变得更加相似,独特性降低。这种现象在写作中是不被鼓励的)”可知,Anil Doshi既提到了人工智能辅助生成故事的优点:个人创造力有所提高,也提到了缺点:集体创造力存在丧失的风险,因此他的评价是客观的。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容及最后一段“Anil Doshi, Assistant Professor at the UCL School of Management, said, “While these results point to an increase in individual creativity, there is risk of losing collective novelty. If the publishing industry were to use more generative AI-inspired stories, our findings suggest that the stories would become less unique and more similar to each other. That is not encouraged in writing.”(UCL管理学院的助理教授Anil Doshi说:“虽然这些结果表明个人创造力有所提高,但也存在失去集体创新性的风险。

When the tragedy struck me during the Depression (大萧条), my father did the only thing he could.
The tragedy happened in the year 1933 I was only 6 years old when I was rushed to the hospital with two crushed feet.
Paragraph 1:
Then one day, while sitting at my usual place in the window, I saw my father walking up the street carrying a tricycle on his shoulder. Was that true? I couldn’t believe my eyes. I opened the window and cried out, “Is that tricycle for me?” Having put down the tricycle, Dad told me that it belonged to me. “Ride the tricycle every day, and then you will be all right, my girl!” From then on, with my father’s company, I rode it every day to strengthen my muscle. Regardless of pain, I kept on practicing riding. Eventually I got my feet back into condition, and could walk normally!
Paragraph 2:
It was many years later before I learned where and how Dad had got the tricycle. My mother told me what happened on those cold winter days. In his only winter coat, he wandered around the hospital every day, begging the doctor to save my feet. Moved by my father, eventually the doctor asked the hospital to give my father a part time job to do. With the doctor’s help, my father got the job. Having worked day and night, eventually, he earned enough money to buy the tricycle.
