B Two-Man Ironman On Sept.17, 2022, Jeff and his son, Johnny, set out to begin the first of three legs of the Ironman competition, where competitors must complete a 140 miles of swimming, bicycling and running in under 17 hours. Not that long ago, Johnny could barely walk a few steps because he was born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). But his dream of being a runner never stopped. From the day Johnny was born, Jeff refused to let his son’s disability hold him back. Determined to show Johnny that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete, Jeff helped him engage in running. They began waking up at 4 a.m. so Jeff could run while pushing his son in a special wheelchair called a racing chair. Every morning, they drove themselves to run increasingly longer distances. Soon, they were entering 5K races, then on to Ironman competition. Jeff would act as Johnny’s arms and legs, carrying the weight of his son throughout the race. The race began with a 2.4-mile swim. Settling Johnny into a kayak, Jeff eased himself into the water. Swimming while dragging another person was very tough. But worst of all, Jeff had to struggle with jellyfish. “I occupied my mind by counting the number of times I got stung (蜇),” he says. After the two men completed the tough bike section in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the final leg of the race — a 26.2-mile marathon. They’d been competing for 10.5 hours, leaving another 6.5 hours to make their time. But at Mile 19, Johnny saw the clock ticking down and worried they wouldn’t make the cutoff. Despite the tiredness, Jeff was convinced they were going all right and then picked up the pace. With minutes left and 200 feet to the finish line, Jeff stopped to help Johnny out of his racing chair and handed him his rolling walker. After years of painstaking work, Johnny was determined to finish his races on his own. After 16 hours, 55 minutes and 35seconds,the father and son crossed the finish line together. As the crowd cheered on an overwhelmed Johnny, a weary Jeff kept a low profle. “My father didn’t want his finish line moment,” says Johnny, tears in eyes. “He wanted it to be mine.” 4. Why did Jeff lead Johnny to running? A To get closer to Johnny. B. To fulfill Johnny’s dream. C. To discover Johnny’s interest. D. To speed up Johnny’s recovery. 5. What challenged Jeff most in the swimming race? A. Lack of energy. B. Pain from injuries. C. Mental tiredness. D. Body weight change. 6. Which of the following can best describe Johnny according to the passage? A. Strong-willed and grateful. B. Warm-hearted and sensitive. C. Patient and generous. D. Tough and humorous. 7. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Fathers are not born; they are made. C. The value of a loving father has no price. D. Success comes from failures along the journey. C In these days of electronic everything, you’d think that most businesses wouldn’t be using paper cheques (支票) any more. In fact, for most businesses, paper cheques are still a thing. As many as one in three business deals are paid this way and 81% of firms in the US are still using paper cheques to settle some of their bills. Stop the eye-rolling because yeah, we know electronic payments are quicker to make, authorize and complete, and they’re easier to track and report. They save paper and are good for the environment. They’re more secure, efficient and cost less. They can be made and approved from anywhere. A growing number of businesses not only prefer electronic payments, but are requiring customers to do this. Even Microsoft recently announced that it would no longer accept paper cheques from its partners. But still ... I’m going to miss the paper cheque. I’ve always enjoyed the circumstance of the biweekly cheque run and the grandest part is the final approval evidenced by the ultimate proof of authority: the signature. Some of my clients take delight in the opportunity to examine and sign every cheque because there’s no better example of power than this. Paper cheques are not only a written form of contracts favored by firms throughout history but also a form of marketing where companies can proudly display their logos. They are clear evidence of stability and reliability. Unfortunately, the writing is on the wall for the paper cheque. And that makes me sad. According to the Small Business Administration, the majority of small business owners are over the age of 50. We grew up with Swanson TV Dinners, hockey without helmets (头盔) and appointed smoking sections in airplanes. We’ll retire and younger generations will bury us along with our chequebooks. We know this will unavoidably change. For now, many businesses in the US are still relying on paper cheques to pay. Yes, they’re inefficient and costlier. But please be patient. Allow me to have this one little enjoyment while it lasts. 8. What phenomenon does the author describe in paragraph 1? A. Doing business is increasingly difficult. B. Everything is going electronic in the US. C. Paper cheques are still in use in business. D. Most American firms fail to pay the bills. 9. What does Microsoft’s decision indicate? A. The growing trend of shifting to electronic payments. B. The change in forms of cooperation in big companies. C. The potential comeback of paper cheques in the market. D The popularity of electronic payments among customers. 10. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3? A. Defend his preference. B. Introduce a new concept. C. Call for readers’ support. D. Promote an old tradition. 11. Why does the author mention Swanson TV Dinners and hockey without helmets? A. To emphasize the outdated nature of past trends. B. To show his attachment to old-school practices. C. To stress his resistance to technological changes. D. To suggest the reliability of traditional methods. D For decades, “simpler is better” has been accepted as a universal truth in marketing. Nick Light, assistant professor of marketing at the UO Lundquist College of Business, has tested that assumption. He found that most consumers prefer offerings that appear to be easy to use and understand. However, pushing simplicity can have a hidden, costly downside. “Simplicity is not a silver bullet,” Light said. This method might work for established companies with track records to back up their claims. But it can be risky for a start-up with no history or a company in a complicated market category where failures or breakdowns are more common. Light’s earlier experience stimulated his interest in the study. He was a marketing manager at a direct-to-consumer mattress(床垫) company. With the catchword “one perfect mattress”, the company offered only one mattress model shipped directly to the consumer’s door, dramatically simplifying the mattress-buying process. “Some customers calling with even minor problems such as a slight discoloration in the material, would get really angry,” Light said. “They would say things like, “I don’t understand what’s so difficult about this,’ even when producing and shipping mattresses are quite complex. These customers were getting overly upset because the product and process had been labeled as simple.” The study also showed that consumers judged the complexity of brands or products based on their mental connections. For example, when study participants viewed advertisements for two different companies, they formed mental pictures of the simplicity or complexity of the brand depending on how plain or busy the art was and the details provided in each ad. Light also looked into product quality and customer opinions and found that consumers are less likely to recommend simpler brands after failures compared to more complex brands. Therefore, the lesson for marketers is to be more careful about building branding and advertising strategies around simplicity, because they could easily backfire if the product or service fails to deliver. 12. What does the underlined words “a silver bullet” in paragraph 2 mean? A. A risky investment. B. A business strategy. C. A quick-fix method. D. A cure-all solution. 13. What did the use of simplicity in the mattress business lead to? A. Rising customer dissatisfaction. B. Reduced expenses for producers. C. Longer transport time for goods. D. More comments from customers. 14. What mainly influence consumers’ views on a brand according to the study? A. The company’s historical background. B. The impressions shaped by ad design. C. The advertising reviews on its website. D. The richness of color in its packaging. 15. What advice does the author give to marketers? A. Advertise after-sale customer service. B. Be cautious about simplicity-themed efforts. C. Stress product quality over simplicity. D. Improve brand presence through social media. 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分,共12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 “Find your passion!” When discussing future career options or selecting a major in college, your parents often say this. The very expression is meant to inspire. But is it good advice? “Finding” a passion implies that it already exists and is simply waiting to be discovered. Unfortunately, this idea is not what science tells us. ___16___ To study this, researchers use a framework of “fixed” and “growth” mindsets. They argue that encouraging people to “find” their passion may cause them to eventually believe that interests and passions are inborn and relatively unchangeable. ___17___ In contrast, people who view interests and passions as developed have a growth mindset of interest. Researchers have revealed that a fixed mindset of interest can decrease creativity. If people believe they are limited to only a few inborn interests and, in consequence, do not explore other areas, they may miss seeing important connections across domains. ___18___ Evidently, people can do a lot to embrace a growth mindset of interest. First, realize that your interests and passions aren’t pre-existing. Take an active role in developing your passions. Second, practise positive self-talk. When you lack interest in a new task, pay attention to your inner dialogue. ___19___For example, change “I’m not interested in this” to “I’m not interested in this yet, but I know that interest can develop with time and engagement.” ___20___But a growth mindset of interest will help you remain open and curious. The science tells us we should work toward loving what we do. We might become more creative and resilient as a result. A. So can a growth mindset of interest be taught? B. Instead passions, like interests, are developed. C. People who think this have a fixed mindset of interest. D. Of course, not every activity will become a burning passion. E. As suchseeing interests as fixed limits their creative potential. F. Don’t expect that pursuing new interests will always be easy or exciting. G. Replace self-critical thoughts with positive ones that encourage growth and learning. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 Many people think of travel as an experience and rightly so. My parents worked day and night to keep a roof over our heads and food on our table. It's true that we had little money and few goods, but we got plenty of love and attention. I was very happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream. My dream was athletics. I fell in love with baseball at an early age, a love so deep that I almost gave it my all. I practiced hard every day and that made me a little closer to my dream. By the time I was sixteen, I had made great progress: I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fast ball and hit anything that moved on the field. I was also lucky: my high school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but also taught me how to believe in myself. One particular incident (事件) with my coach Ollie Jarvis changed my life forever. It was the summer holiday in Senior 2 and one of my friends recommended me for a summer job. This meant a chance for money in my pocket — certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and I could also begin to save money for a house for my mother, which was what I had always dreamed of. The prospect (前景) of this summer job was attractive and I wanted to jump at this chance. Then it hit me that I would have to give up summer baseball training to deal with the work schedule. I was afraid of telling my coach, who would certainly be against my plan. I hesitated for several days. At last, I spurred (给……打气) myself with the advice my mother often gave us, "If you make your bed, you have to lie in it." I made up my mind. Paragraph1: When I told my coach Ollie Jarvis, he was as angry as I expected him to be. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph2: “Well,” he asked, “is $3.5 an hour from the summer job the price of a dream?” _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2025届英语模拟考试 考试时间:120分钟 满分:150分 第一部分 听力 (共两节,满分30分) 做题时,先将答案标在试卷上,录音内容结束后,你将有两分钟的时间将试卷上的答案转涂到答题卡上。 第一节 (共5小题: 每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话仅读一遍。 1. During the festival, every class set up food stands with various food for students to try. Cooking classes were arranged in which students learned how to cook and explored the culture of traditional cuisines. The highlight was the cooking show where students displayed their cooking talents. All the students thought highly of the festival, saying it not only satisfied their taste buds but also deepened their understanding of food culture. 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】Paragraph1: When I told my coach Ollie Jarvis, he was as angry as I expected him to be. “You have your whole life to work,” he said, with a serious look on his face, “but your playing days are limited. You can’t afford to waste them.” I stood before him with my head hanging, trying to think of the words that would explain to him why my dream of buying my mother a house was worth facing his disappointment. “How much are you going to make at this summer job, son? ” he demanded. “$ 3.5 per hour,” I replied in a low voice. Paragraph2: “Well,” he asked, “is $ 3.5 an hour from the summer job the price of a dream?” That simple question set me thinking. It made me understand the difference between wanting something right now and having a long-term goal. Determined to put all my heart into baseball, I promised the coach that I would give up the job. That summer, I dedicated myself to baseball training, and the next year, I was given a baseball scholarship to a university. Finally, I signed with a famous team for $ 1.7 million, and certainly bought my mother the house of my dream. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
