In 2018, when Hemesh Chadalavada was 12 years old, his grandmother forgot to turn off the gas after she made herself a cup of tea. This experience caused Hemesh to invent the “Alpha Monitor”, a device designed for dementia (痴呆) patients.
He started creating this device with whatever was at home, with the help of the internet. “The first model I built was a huge box. I learnt how to make a wearable device on the internet by learning which components to use and where I could source them in Hyderabad. I started with a hardware device, after which I learnt coding online and moved to machine learning and data science, to help me perfect my device,” he adds.
The Alpha Monitor has two parts, one, a wearable watch-like device, and the second, an alarm which connects to it. “You attach the device to the patient. In case the patient throws it away or doesn’t like wearing it, you can just put it in a bag and fix it in their pocket or sock or wherever you like. Once you plug in the alarm, you will be warned for every tiny change in movement. As soon as the patient gets up or wanders away, it will warn the family members with a huge alarm sound,” says Hemesh.
The wearable device monitors body temperature, pulse, and detects movement, falls and more. It works using a gyroscope sensor to detect even the slightest movement and health sensors for pulse and temperature. It works without Wi-Fi or bluetooth and has a range of 1-2k m, according to Hemesh. It can also be connected to an app for children staying far away to monitor their parents’ movements.
“The happiest I’ve ever been is seeing how the device actually works for patients with Alzheimer’s. It gives me incredible happiness to see the small impact I’ve managed to create in the lives of these families,” smiles the youngster.
4. What can we learn about Hemesh from the first two paragraphs?
A. He received little formal education. B. He had a strong self-learning ability.
C. He invented the device to stop gas leaks. D. He got support from a computer engineer.
5. How does the Alpha Monitor warn people of patients’ movements?
A. By speaking into their phones. B. By producing a loud noise.
C. By making an emergency call. D. By announcing the time automatically.
6. What is a feature of the Alpha Monitor?
A. It can analyze patients’ health data. B. It can prevent patients from falling down.
C. It can track patients’ movements remotely. D. It can make a difference to patients’ recovery.
7. Which of the following can best describe Hemesh?
A. Caring and creative. B. Generous and talented.
C. Determined and honest. D. Independent and brave.

Just like everyone has their own unique personal space needs, we also all have our own unique comfort zones. Personal space boundaries keep others out while our comfort zones keep us in. Yet until we’re able to move beyond what is comfortable for us, we won’t be able to grow or develop beyond our limits. Until you get outside your comfort zone and consider other ideas, you won’t really know what you “know” or even know “why” you believe what you believe.
The fear of leaving our comfort zones is a natural human emotion that often keeps us from exploring new territories, trying new experiences, and accepting unfamiliar situations. It is a powerful force that can prevent us from reaching our full potential and realizing our dreams.
Not only does stretching past your comfort zone allow you to develop into an adult, but it also enhances your happiness in life. The happier you are with your life, the greater the positive change will be. Choosing how to stretch yourself beyond the familiar can be more satisfying, too, than being assigned a particular activity. In a study, researchers found that the most rewarding activity is one that stretches you to provide support or engage with others.
It’s true that doing something beyond your normal range of activities can lead to fear. In the study, while 41 percent of the “comfort zone breakers” expressed feelings of fear, 70 percent described their feelings of courage at breaking out of their comfort zone. In fact, facing a fear was a strong motivator for many of the participants in their choice of activities. Being able to encounter a fear and overcome it provides a boost to your sense of self and your brain responds with a boost of dopamine. There’s less stress on your body, too. At the same time, the fear will decrease and eventually disappear.
8 What does the author encourage us to do in paragraph 1?
A. Be aware of our own comfort zones.
B. Show respect for others’ personal space.
C. Stretch beyond our recognized limits.
D. Step out of our comfort zones to grow.
9. According to the passage, what’s the benefit of stepping out of your comfort zone ?
A. It reduces your personal space.
B. It enhances your happiness in life.
C. It isolates you from others.
D. It increases your fear.
10. What can we infer about dealing with fear?
A. It leads to positive outcomes. B. It is a sense of one’s own value.
C. It is an ability to control emotion. D. It is simply a response to stress.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To show challenges of stepping out the comfort zone.
B. To give suggestions on stepping out of the comfort zone.
C. To explain the necessity of stepping out of the comfort zone.
D. To present related studies on stepping out the comfort zone.
D 9. B 10. A 11. C

根据文章第一段“Yet until we’re able to move beyond what is comfortable for us, we won’t be able to grow or develop beyond our limits. Until you get outside your comfort zone and consider other ideas, you won’t really know what you “know” or even know “why” you believe what you believe.
根据文章第三段“Not only does stretching past your comfort zone allow you to develop into an adult, but it also enhances your happiness in life. The happier you are with your life, the greater the positive change will be.(超越舒适区不仅能让你成长为一个成熟的人,还能提升你生活中的幸福感。你对自己的生活越满意,积极的改变就会越大。)”可知,超越舒适区不仅能让你成长为一个成熟的人,还能提升你生活中的幸福感。你对自己的生活越满意,积极的改变就会越大。即走出舒适区能提升生活幸福感。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“In fact, facing a fear was a strong motivator for many of the participants in their choice of activities. Being able to encounter a fear and overcome it provides a boost to your sense of self and your brain responds with a boost of dopamine. There’s less stress on your body, too.(实际上,面对恐惧是许多参与者选择这些活动的强大动力。能够直面恐惧并克服它会增强你的自我认同感,同时你的大脑会释放出更多的多巴胺。你的身体所承受的压力也会减少。)”可知,面对恐惧是许多参与者选择活动的强大动力,克服恐惧能增强自我意识,大脑会释放多巴胺,身体压力也会减少,这些都表明应对恐惧能带来积极的结果。故选A。
D
Nearly two years after the COVID-19 outbreak, China has granted approval to its first antibody combination therapy (治疗) for COVID-19 treatment, adding a tool to the world’s fight against the disease.
A team from Tsinghua University, along with the Shenzhen People’s Hospital, has accomplished the task in 20 months. It would usually take 10 years. “It can reduce the rate of hospitalization (住院治疗) and death by 80 percent,” said Zhang Linqi, leader of the research team.
The new antibody drug is immediately effective after being used. Moreover, the therapy can protect people, especially those whose physical condition doesn’t allow vaccination (接种疫苗), from becoming infected by COVID-19 for around 9 to 12 months, said Zhang.
How does it work? When a virus infects a cell, it relies on an important type of protein: the spike proteins (棘突蛋白) on its surface. The spike proteins serve as a key to unlocking a cell. If a virus cannot enter a cell, it will disappear immediately. The job of our antibodies is to block the virus from entering cells. So its target is very precise. In addition, thanks to the coordination between the two antibodies, it is highly efficient in preventing the virus, according to Zhang. The qualities of the new drug make it especially useful for high-risk groups, such as frontline medical workers and people not suitable for vaccination due to various underlying health problems.
The new drug is expected to come to the market soon, but it’s not cheap. That’s because of limited production. Noting that China has used science and technology to fight COVID-19 since the beginning of the outbreak, Zhang said, “Science is the key to solving the issue. Science has shown its power in all sectors, from medical treatment, medicine and vaccine development to prevention and control measures.”
12. What can we know about the new drug according to paragraph 1 and paragraph 2?
A. It’s the only way to treat COVID-19.
B. It dramatically improves the survival rate of patients.
C. It takes researchers 10 years to develop the new drug.
D. It was developed by the team from one of China’s top universities.
13. Which statement does the author probably agree with?
A. Only medical workers can take this drug.
B. Antibodies stop spike proteins entering a cell.
C. The new medicine takes effect after a period of use.
D. The new drug can protect people from infection for life.
14. Who are best suited for the drug according to the passage?
A. Doctors and nurses. B. The elderly and children.
C. People without vaccination. D. Patients and their family members.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The drug will be readily available.
B. The new drug has been put into use.
C. Zhang had a high regard for the power of science.
D. China is the first country to use technology to fight disease.
B 13. B 14. A 15. C

根据第四段“When a virus infects a cell, it relies on an important type of protein: the spike proteins (刺突蛋白) on its surface. The spike proteins serve as a key to unlocking a cell. If a virus cannot enter a cell, it will disappear immediately. The job of our antibodies is to block the virus from entering cells.
根据第四段“The qualities of the new drug make it especially useful for high-risk groups, such as frontline medical workers and people not suitable for vaccination due to various underlying health problems. (这种新药的质量使其特别适用于高危人群,如前线医务人员和由于各种潜在健康问题而不适合接种疫苗的人)”可知,这种新药适用于高危人群,如前线医务人员等。因此,根据文章,最适合服用这种药物的是A项“Doctors and nurses.(医生和护士)”符合题意,故选A项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Science is the key to solving the issue. Science has shown its power in all sectors (科学是解决这个问题的关键。科学在各个领域都显示了它的力量)”可知,张认为,科学是解决疫情的关键,高度重视科学的力量。因此,从最后一段可以推断出的是C项“Zhang had a high regard for the power of science.(张高度重视科学的力量)”符合题意,故选C项。

Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job, and now our financial situation was terrible. In despair, I had finally put the home on the market, and a buyer was due to show up later that day. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.
Deep in despair, I sat typing letters for jobs. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my 13-month-old son, Forrest playing near our big, gentle dog, Brigitte.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there? Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
Thinking of these, I couldn’t help but sigh and went straight back to work. However, I hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking madly and running out of the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized my son was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I saw my son struggling in the water. He was in such an urgent situation that he might drown at any moment. Brigitte had jumped into the pool trying to swim to my son. At no time, I jumped into the pool with clothes on. By then, Brigitte was dragging my son to the edge of the pool. I quickly picked him up and carried him to safety. Thanks to Brigitte’s timely warning and rescue, my son was lucky to have a narrow escape.
Later, I told the story of the dog to the buyer. He was deeply moved. He offered to leave Brigitte to me, saying that it was I who had the right to own her. Considering that I was not rich enough to keep her, He paid me some extra money, which was enough for me to keep her living with us. I am very grateful for this man’s generosity and understanding. I rented a small apartment and continued to live happily with her. After that, she took care of her son more carefully.

The wearable device monitors body temperature pulse, and detects movement, falls and more. It works using a gyroscope sensor to detect even the slightest movement and health sensors for pulse and temperature. It works without Wi-Fi or bluetooth and has a range of 1-2k m, according to Hemesh. It can also be connected to an app for children staying far away to monitor their parents’ movements.

8. What does the author encourage us to do in paragraph 1?
