The 9th Asian Winter Games will kick off on February 7, 2025 in Harbin, Heilongjiang province. There will be 34 countries and regions — the most in the event's history — taking part in the Games. Here are some fun facts about the Games.
Torch (火炬)
The torch stands 735 mm tall and is inspired by a beautiful lilac (丁香花) , Harbin's city flower. The theme of its design, “Surging”, aims to express the strong energy of life in nature. It shows that the 9th Asian Winter Games will be filled with enthusiasm and passion. The design of the torch takes the form of a flowering lilac, integrating colors such as China Red, Lilac Purple and Snow White, symbolizing the sincerity, warmth, openness, and inclusiveness of Heilongjiang province and the characteristics of the host city, Harbin.
Emblem (徽章)
The emblem, named “Breakthrough”, combines symbols of short track speed skaters, flowing ribbons (丝带) and lilacs. Its colors, in shades of blue and purple, reflect the beauty of sunlight on ice and snow. The figure’s shape looks like the Chinese character “九”, representing the 9th Games, and “合”, representing unity and friendship. Through this emblem, Harbin extends a warm welcome and expresses hopes for shared growth among Asian countries.
Mascots (吉祥物)
The mascots for the Games, Binbin and Nini, are two lovable Siberian tigers. Binbin represents ice sports and wears ice skates, while Nini, representing snow sports, rides a snowboard. Their names — “Binbin” from “Harbin” and “Nini” from the Chinese word for “you” — come together to form a message: “Harbin welcomes you! ” These tiger mascots were inspired by two real tigers born in Harbin and represent values of strength, courage and positivity.
Events
The upcoming Games will feature 64 events in total with 31% making their first appearance, including new events in speed skating, short track speed skating and ski mountaineering. Notably, ski mountaineering will also be included in the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, making the Asian Winter Games a testing ground for the sport.
21. Where did the idea for the torch come from?
A. A cute animal in Siberia. B. A speed ice skater in action.
C. A flowing ribbon in the wind. D. A beautiful flower of the host city.
22. What common message do the emblem and the mascots carry?
A. A shared future. B. A warm welcome.
C. Unity and friendship. D. Courage and positivity.
23. What is special about the upcoming Games?
A. One of the events will be included in the Olympics.
B. The number of athlete participants will break the record.
C. Half of the events will appear at the Games for the first time.
D. Many new events will be tested for the Olympics at the Games.
B
A few years ago, we bought a Lego Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) for my dad’s birthday, hoping to combine his love for architecture with family time.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered around the large dining table to build the model. We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with precision in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction book. The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts producing good results, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the colored bricks on the building’s floor, our conversation too took a turn.
We were amazed by how complex the model was and its instruction book. We realized the book itself was a work of art, beautiful, but also surprisingly detailed and clear. It provided us with the comfort of certainty. We knew if we followed all the instructions, we would end up with a model that looked exactly like the picture on the box. If we made a mistake, all we had to do was to repeat our steps and start again.
Life, however, does not fit together so neatly and rarely provides us with such clear instructions. We talked over our respective lives, decisions made, and actions and choices never taken. Dad reflected on a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, on the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the expert architects doing the assembling (组装), but out in the world, we were the ones being assembled. We think we’re in control, but our choices are shaped by forces beyond our control. In the face of uncertainty, we have to proceed, trusting both in the process and the end result.
Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room to look at the completed Lego model, which brings forth a sense of happiness and comfort. It reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather how we lived it.
24. Which can best describe the author’s experience of building the Lego model?
A. Simple and uninteresting. B. Imaginative and enjoyable.
C. Complicated and rewarding. D. Challenging and discouraging.
25. What does the author learn from assembling the Lego model?
A. Life requires to be planned carefully. B. Life doesn’t come with clear guidance.
C. Mistakes in life can always be corrected. D. Life’s uncertainty makes it more exciting.
26. How does the author suggest we deal with uncertainty in life?
A. By avoiding making any choice. B. By focusing on instant end results.
C. By seeking instructions from others. D. By moving forward with confidence.
27. What does the completed Lego model mean to the author?
A. The value of hard work in life. B. The achievement of life goals.
C. The journey of living one’s life. D. The joy of staying with families.
C
Obesity (肥胖) is often considered a key factor in the likelihood of early death, but a new review reveals that cardiorespiratory (心肺) fitness actually has more of an influence on mortality (死亡) risk and long-term health. In other words, being fit matters more than being thin when it comes to living longer and staying healthy for longer. The findings could be a reason to change public health strategies and treatments.
“As a society, we tend to link body weight or fatness with health status,” says kinesiologist Nathan Weeldryer, from the University of Virginia. “Our study, with the largest and most globally representative sample to date, aims to shift views on the relationship between fitness and body fat.”
Researchers from the US and UK analyzed 20 studies from 1980 — 2023, with 398,716 participants. The data covered BMI, cardiorespiratory fitness, and mortality risk. The team found that the risk of an early death for individuals with obesity who were fit was similar to that of people classed as fit and of normal weight. What’s more, having obesity and being fit meant a longer life on average than having a normal weight and being unfit. While the data didn’t show fitness as being the only factor involved, it highlighted just how important it is in our overall health.
“Fitness is far more important than fatness for mortality risk,” says exercise physiologist Siddhartha Angadi, from the University of Virginia. “Exercise is more than just a way to expend calories. It can largely reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death.” The researchers aren’t dismissing the health burden of obesity: around 1 in 8 are obese globally and the numbers are rising. It raises the risk of high blood pressure, cancers, and other diseases.
However, the relationship between obesity and the risk of an early death isn’t clear-cut. The research team advocates more emphasis on exercise and less on weight loss. “Repetitive cycles of losing and gaining weight — yo-yo dieting — are associated with numerous health risks,” says exercise physiologist Glenn Gaesser, from Arizona State University. “Improving cardiorespiratory fitness may help avoid bad health effects.”
28. Why did researchers conduct the research?
A. To deny obesity’s link to early death.
B. To discover the best weight-loss ways.
C. To update views on the weight-fitness connection.
D. To stress large samples’ importance in research.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Supporting evidence for the research results.
B. Potential application of the research findings.
C. A further explanation of the research methods.
D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.
30. What does exercise physiologist Siddhartha Angadi suggest?
A. Making use of the findings.
B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research.
D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.
31. What will the follow-up study focus on?
A. Obesity and disease. B. Weight-loss impact.
C. Yo-yo dieting risks. D. Fitness benefits.
D
Across the flat plateau of AlUla in Saudi Arabia, shades of gray-brown soil are dotted with areas of dark rock — and a clearly defined circle of stones. Unmistakably constructed by humans, this structure, called “standing stone circles” by archaeologists, was built around 7,500 years ago by a people we barely know for a purpose we have long misunderstood.
In 2019, archaeologists from the University of Western Australia began excavating (发掘) these standing stone circles. Their initial idea was that these were structures built by Neolithic nomads (新石器时代的游牧民) for some long-forgotten religious practices. However, excavating at multiple sites, they found what turned out to be archaeological pay dirt — domestic rubbish. The remains of discarded animal bones, household tools, and even jewelry, have reclassified the standing stone circles as Neolithic homes.
Standing stone circles seem to have sprung up around 5,800 to 5,500 B.C. This coincided with a warmer climate in the region that brought more regular rainfall and a landscape of rich grasses and trees, good conditions for raising cattle and goats. But these were also good conditions for building permanent structures. More abundant vegetation meant less pressure to keep moving the animals to fresh grasslands, which made building homes more worthwhile. This, and the plateau’s abundance of stones, may have encouraged the nomads to stay a while and build.
Excavations of these settlements are revealing something of this people’s way of life. They kept cattle and goats for meat, but continued to hunt and gather to expand their diet with hare, fruits and nuts. The many grinding (磨碎) stones found on the sites suggest inhabitants were regularly grinding grains, but these were likely to be gathered rather than farmed. The plateau sites have also revealed tools made with materials from the sandstone valleys and jewelry shaped from shells from the Red Sea — these Neolithic people had a complex culture involving travel and probably exchange.
The revelation overturns many of our assumptions about Neolithic AlUla. Here was a people more settled and more civilized than history has given them credit for. Their story is just beginning to be revealed, but already a very different picture of early AIUla is emerging.
32. What did the 2019 excavation finally identify the “standing stone circles” as?
A. Religious sites. B. Rubbish stations.
C. Domestic buildings. D. Natural wonders.
33. What was a contributing factor in the building of the standing stone circles?
A. The worsening climate. B. The richness of plants.
C. The desire to raise more animals. D. The need to store goods.
34. What is most likely TRUE about Neolithic people’s way of life in AlUla?
A. They planted crops and kept cattle and goats.
B. They relied entirely on hunting and gathering for food.
C. They had interactions with other groups.
D. They made tools and jewelry purely from local materials.
35. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To provide some new insights. B. To introduce an ancient population.
C. To promote a historical site. D. To argue for some long-held beliefs.

I hated writing growing up. But I couldn’t avoid it: learning English was a must in high school. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my disorganized thoughts into fluent sentences. I tried my best but my teachers would return my papers littered with red. I was frustrated to no end. ____36____ And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
____37____ I liked it that objective truth could be found if I searched properly. In college, I joined a research lab to enhance conductor efficiency, and after a year of hard work, we developed a design that halved energy losses. However, the joy was short-lived as I had to write a research paper about our findings.
I knew that if I wanted to become an academic, I would need to spend time penning papers. But with my awful track record with writing, I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks. ____38____
Before I could give up in defeat, though, the graduate student explained those red marks didn’t mean I was a bad writer. ____39____ It requires revising your work, often several times. I kept improving the outline of my paper, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs. My initial draft wasn’t perfect. I had buried a few key takeaways, and the introduction was missing important context. But with help, I finally made it.
From then on, writing became one of my favorite parts of research. ____40____ But I came around. All it took was some trial and error.
A. “Not again,” I screamed inside.
B. I should view it in a positive way.
C. Maybe I wasn’t cut out for writing.
D. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing.
E. I soon realized writing was my strength.
F. I switched to the world of math and science.
G. I had never imagined it in my wildest dreams.

77. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

Events

【答案】24. C 25. B 26. D 27.

“Fitness is far more important than fatness for mortality risk” says exercise physiologist Siddhartha Angadi, from the University of Virginia.
However the relationship between obesity and the risk of an early death isn’t clear-cut.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. A 31.

C Domestic buildings.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. C 35. A

【32题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第二段中的“The remains of discarded animal bones, household tools, and even jewelry, have reclassified the standing stone circles as Neolithic homes. (丢弃的动物骨骼、家用工具和甚至珠宝的残骸,使这些立石圈被重新归类为新石器时代的住所。)”可知,2019年的发掘最终确定了立石圈是新石器时代的住宅建筑。故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段中的“This coincided with a warmer climate in the region that brought more regular rainfall and a landscape of rich grasses and trees, good conditions for raising cattle and goats. But these were also good conditions for building permanent structures. More abundant vegetation meant less pressure to keep moving the animals to fresh grasslands, which made building homes more worthwhile. This, and the plateau’s abundance of stones, may have encouraged the nomads to stay a while and build.
由文章第四段中的“The plateau sites have also revealed tools made with materials from the sandstone valleys and jewelry shaped from shells from the Red Sea — these Neolithic people had a complex culture involving travel and probably exchange. 【35题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中的“Unmistakably constructed by humans, this structure, called “standing stone circles” by archaeologists, was built around 7, 500 years ago by a people we barely know for a purpose we have long misunderstood. (这一结构无疑是人类建造的,考古学家称之为“立石圈”,大约7500年前由我们几乎一无所知的人们建造,而建造的目的我们长期以来都误解了。)”和最后一段“The revelation overturns many of our assumptions about Neolithic AlUla. Here was a people more settled and more civilized than history has given them credit for. Their story is just beginning to be revealed, but already a very different picture of early AIUla is emerging. (这一发现颠覆了我们关于新石器时代AlUla的很多假设。这里的人们比我们历史上所认为的更加定居和文明。他们的故事才刚刚开始被揭示,但早期AlUla的一幅截然不同的画面已经浮现出来。)”可知,本文介绍了沙特一处新石器时代的建筑,该建筑的发掘推翻了考古学家之前对于沙特新石器时代游牧民的设想,为该地区游牧民的生活方式提供了新的认识,因此文章旨在提供一些新的见解。故选A。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.

【答案】参考范文 1
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.
参考范文 2
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK, Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held my mom’s hand tightly.
