The afternoon was very hot and dry. Sweat ran down Richard’s face as the 24-year-old kept cycling along a rural road. Suddenly, he noticed a small bike lying by the roadside. He immediately got off the bike and approached the spot, noticing a water bottle and a small pink helmet (头盔) lying nearby. He bent closer and saw fresh little muddy footsteps disappearing into the woods.
Richard’s eyebrows (眉毛) shot up as he hurried toward the entrance of the thick forest. It seemed highly unusual for a little kid to be alone there. He had seen several houses on his way here, but even the nearest one was about five miles away. What would a kid be doing here all alone? Richard was confused and anxious.
Richard’s instincts (直觉) told him something was wrong, so he cupped his hands around his mouth and called out: “Hello, anyone there?” Just as he changed course, he heard a distant cry from the heart of the woods. It was a little girl’s voice crying for help. “Help...I’m stuck...Help...” The voice faded with the wind. “I’m coming! Hold on!” Richard rushed toward the voice. As he got closer, he was shocked by what he saw.
Tree branches moved quickly in circles on the muddy-brown river, the powerful current rushing through the rocks. He noticed a little girl and a dog holding onto a log (原木) floating in the water. The current was washing away everything on its course, and the girl was lucky as the log was stuck onto something under the surface. But it wouldn’t hold for long as the current was growing faster and stronger.
Richard was running out of time. He had to pull the two out to the bank before they were washed toward the edge of the waterfall, which was just meters away. His mind acted fast, and he ran back to get something. “Hold on! I’ll be right back,” he promised her. Moments later, Richard returned with a long length of jungle vine (藤) tied around his waist.
Richard jumped into the river and swam toward them._____________________________________________
Finally getting his breath back,Richard asked the girl how she ended up there. _________________________

Richard jumped into the river and swam toward them. The muddy water had blocked his vision and choked his breath, but he continued to move forward with determination. Drawing closer, he shouted to the frightened girl, instructing her to reach out her hand. She obeyed, stretching her arm out towards him with a trembling hand, and Richard lifted her onto his back. Gathering all his strength, Richard pulled the log toward him, seized the dog’s leash in one hand, and swam toward the bank. Finally, Richard brought them to safety, lay on the land, completely worn out but hugely relieved.
Finally getting his breath back,Richard asked the girl how she ended up there. She explained that her dog had run off after hearing firecrackers earlier that day. She followed it on her bike. When the dog ran into the woods, she left her bike behind and went after it. After the dog accidentally fell into the river, she jumped in to save it without hesitation, but she got stuck too. Having rested for a while, Richard walked them to their home, one of the houses he had passed. The girl’s parents, who had been anxiously searching, were deeply grateful. Richard’s bravery and quick thinking saved two lives.
