“With the passing of Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, China and the world have lost
one greatest agricultural scientists,” said Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize
Foundation (基金会 ). Quinn also shared his memory of the “father of hybrid rice” in an
interview with Xinhua on Sunday.
Quinn first met Yuan in October 2004, when Yuan traveled to Des Moines in the U.S.
state of Iowa to receive the World Food Prize. As they walked out of the airport, Quinn
received a call and stepped aside to speak. When he turned back a minute or two later, he lost
Yuan. “I had never before ‘lost ’ a laureate (贵人 ),” he said. After an anxious search, he found
Professor Yuan surrounded by a group of smiling graduate students from Iowa State
University who so admired him that they wanted to take him off for a meal and conversation.
Quinn admired Yuan as a teacher. “He always had time to answer questions and speak
with young scientists and students. The American high school students we sent to
his research center each year always returned filled with knowledge and a deep
desire to learn more.”
In Quinn’s eyes, Yuan was incredibly modest, never seeking fame, and focused only on
hard work and results that could help lift people out of poverty. With a ‘down to earth ’
attitude, Yuan greatly reduced hunger and provided farmers with surplus (多 余 的 ) income
through his discovery of hybrid rice.
Learning of Yuan’s passing away on Saturday, Quinn issued a statement to send his
deepest sympathy to Yuan’s family and colleagues. “Professor Yuan Longping, who was

legacy will provide inspiration to generations far into the future, in China and across the

Engineers from the University at Buffalo, Fudan University in China, and the University of
Wisconsin-Madison have come together with funding from the National Science Foundation to
produce an efficient and cost-effective device that purifies(净化) drinking water using the
world’s most abundant power source-the sun.
More than 2, 300 years ago, the philosopher Aristotle described the water cycle. He has
explained that water is heated by the sun, evaporates (蒸发) up into the air, condenses (凝结)
into drops, and then falls back to the ground, pure and free of pollutants.
Professor Qiaoqiang Gan and the other engineers created a method of purifying water that
builds upon Aristotle’s ancient observations. Gan’s team invented a solar water purifier that is a
modern version of an evaporative solar still. This device looks like the roof of a tent, with strips
of carbon-coated paper covering the top so that the paper strip hangs down on the sides. The ends
of the paper strip dip into a water container at the bottom. Gradually, the water in the container is
absorbed by the paper. When the black carbon coating on the paper is heated by the sun, the wet
paper begins to dry. During evaporation, salt, dirt, bacteria, and other pollutants are trapped in
the paper. As the temperature cools, water droplets begin to condense on the surface of the paper.
The purified water is collected in a clean container and is ready to drink.
There are a few key advantages of the solar water purifier. First, the device is quick and
efficient. The solar still can generate up to 5 gallons of clean water daily, which is enough to
provide sufficient drinking water for a family. Furthermore, this solar water purifier is cheaper
than other water-purification devices because it is made with inexpensive and widely available
materials.
There are also disadvantages in terms of the adaptation to diverse environments on Earth
and the building up of salt in the process. Currently, the engineers are working to make their
purifier available worldwide. Soon, drinkable water will be purified and accessible where it is
needed.
28.Why does the author mention Aristotle and the water cycle in the text?
A.To catch readers’ attention and interest.
B.To add more authority to the new invention.
C.To show the history of the solar water purifier.
D.To help illustrate the basic working principles of the invention
29.What is the main function of the carbon-coated paper?
A.To cover the top. B.To collect clean water.
C.To hang down on the sides. D.To absorb water and heat from the sun.
30.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.What the researchers have done.
B.How the solar water purifier works.
C.What the solar water purifier can do.
民乐一中高一(5)部三月月考英语试卷 第 3 页 共 4 页
D.How similar Aristotle’s observation is to the purifier.
31.What might the author think of the future of the solar water purifier?
A.Dark. B.Uncertain. C.Promising. D.Unpredictable.

Useful Tips for Setting Up a Blog in English
There’s a little bit more to blogging than just writing. If you just jump into writing, you
might miss out on some of the best parts of having a blog. 36
Pick a topic. What will your blog be about? Cooking? Movies? Your daily life?
Learning English? Your blog should be about something that you enjoy writing about.
37 The theme could affect how you design it and what you name it, so take some
time to think about this.
Create a schedule. Writing in English regularly might seem easy, but it can be tough
when you first start out. You don’t always “feel like” writing. 38 To
prevent this problem, create a schedule for yourself when you first start. Maybe you will write
every Saturday at 7 pm for a half hour, for example. Pick whatever works for you, as long as
you stick to it.
39 A blog is more than a place online where you can learn English. But it
can be a great place to start! Use your blogging to help you join English learning
communities around the Internet, on social media or in online forums (论坛).
Make connections. As you read other blogs, leave comments and join the conversation.
40 Connect with teachers and native speakers in person, online or through their
own blogs. Find people who enjoy reading what you’ll be writing about, so your blog can
have an audience. Once you have readers, ask them to correct your English and you will see
some amazing growth as an English learner.
A.Make your blog a greater place.
B.Use the blog to branch out to other Internet resources.
C. Invite friends and other English learners to read your blog.
D.Sometimes you have to reschedule your plan all over again.
E.When you first set up your blog, here are some tips to follow.
F.And you might find yourself putting things off until a later time.
G.Besides, it should also match with your goal for learning English.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library,
and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange
problem—inability (没能力)to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I pulled a few books off the
shelf and sat down on the floor. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of dog.
I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was the
one I could share secrets with, but later he was given away to someone who had space and
money to care for him. I never forgot my dog.
On the book’s cover, there was a dog which looked the same as mine. I figured the picture
of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the little, Amos, the Dog with a Plan.Without
opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with
difficulty and got the main ides of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from
his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued
the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my cheeks. It
was until then that I realized I had begun to overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the
very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed myself in the real scene.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;

My mother’s call brought me back to the real world and I suddenly realized something. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. From then on, I kept going to the library. In the library, I was exposed to different types of books: detective stories, love stories, poems and so on. My mother encouraged me to spend time doing my favorite thing. Day by day, I finally succeeded in overcoming my inability to read. Moreover, I began to write some stories. When I went to university, I chose literature as my major.
Last year, my mother was so proud that her son was awarded a PhD in literature. I never told my mother about my experience that summer. It was the very first book that made me who I am today.
