The Pack Horse Library initiative was part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA), created to help lift America out of the Great Depression, during which, by 1933, unemployment had risen to 40 percent in Appalachia. This initiative was an opportunity to boost both employment and literacy at the same time. The WPA paid the book carriers salaries. Counties had to have their own base libraries from which the horse-riding librarians would travel. Local schools helped cover those costs, and the reading materials — books, magazines, and newspapers — were all donated. The book women rode 100 to 120 miles a week, on their own horses or mules, along planned routes, regardless of the weather. If the destination was too remote even for horses, they dismounted and went on foot. In most cases, the book women were hired locally — according to historian Donald C. Boyd, “a familiar face to otherwise distrustful mountain folk.” By the end of 1938, there were 274 librarians riding out across 29 counties. In total, the program employed nearly 1,000 riding librarians. In addition to providing reading materials, the book women served as touchstones for these communities. They tried to fill book requests, sometimes stopped to read to those who couldn’t, and helped develop local pride. As one recipient said, “The books you brought us have saved our lives. It s our duty to visit the library and to help in every way that we can, so that we may keep it as an active actor in our community.” 24. What did the Pack Horse Library initiative aim to do? A. Link remote communities. B. Enrich life in the country. C. Support the local schools. D. Provide job opportunities. 25. Which aspect of the initiative is presented in paragraph 3? A. The operation mode. B. The librarian selection. C. The historical background. D. The community engagement. 26. What was the main reason for most of the book women being hired locally? A. They were excellent horse riders. B. They were familiar with the routes. C. They could be trusted more easily. D. They could be hired at a low cost. 27. What can the book women be regarded as according to the last paragraph? A. Social activists. B. Community facilitators. C. Information providers. D. Book reviewers. D 25. A 26. C 27. 根据文章第二段“The Pack Horse Library initiative was part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration (WPA), created to help lift America out of the Great Depression.(驮马图书馆计划是富兰克林•罗斯福总统的工程进度管理局(WPA)的一部分,该计划旨在帮助美国摆脱大萧条。)”和“This initiative was an opportunity to boost both employment and literacy at the same time.(这一计划是一个同时提高就业率和识字率的机会。)” 根据文章第三段“The WPA paid the book carriers salaries. Counties had to have their own base libraries from which the horse-riding librarians would travel. Local schools helped cover those costs, and the reading materials — books, magazines, and newspapers — were all donated.(工程进度管理局给图书搬运工发工资。各县必须有自己的基础图书馆,骑马的图书管理员可以从那里出发。当地学校帮助支付这些费用,而阅读材料——书籍、杂志和报纸——都是捐赠的。)”可知,第三段介绍了该计划的运作模式。故选A。 根据文章倒数第二段“In most cases, the book women were hired locally — according to historian Donald C. Boyd, “a familiar face to otherwise distrustful mountain folk”.(在大多数情况下,女性图书管理员都是在当地雇佣的——根据历史学家唐纳德•C•博伊德的说法,“对于那些本来多疑的山区居民来说,她们是一张熟悉的面孔”。)” 根据文章最后一段“In addition to providing reading materials, the book women served as touchstones for these communities. They tried to fill book requests, sometimes stopped to read to those who couldn’t, and helped develop local pride.(除了提供阅读材料外,女性图书管理员还成为这些社区的试金石。她们尽量满足书籍的需求,有时会停下来为那些不会读书的人读书,并帮助培养当地的自豪感。)”可知,女性图书管理员不仅提供阅读材料,还促进社区发展,所以可以被视为社区促进者。故选B。 C Recent research reveals that the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by companies in the US has a disproportionate impact on women. According to a recent analysis, approximately 79% of the jobs lost to AI were held by women. This difference can be due to several factors. Women are more likely to work in industries that are highly be influenced by automation, such as retail, hospitality, and administrative support. These sectors often involve repetitive tasks that can be easily automated by AI technologies. Consequently, women employed in these industries face a higher risk of job displacement. Gender biases in AI algorithms (运算法则) can worsen the situation for women. AI systems are trained on historical data which may reflect existing gender biases in hiring and promotion practices. This can result in biased decision-making during recruitment and performance evaluations, putting women at a disadvantage in the workplace. The lack of diversity in the development of AI technologies contributes to the gender difference. The underrepresentation (代表名额不足) of women in the field of AI means that their perspectives and experiences are not adequately considered during the design and development process. As a result, AI systems may not fully understand or cater to the needs of women, continuously leading to gender inequalities. To address these challenges, it is crucial to prioritize diversity and inclusion in the development and deployment of AI technologies. This involves increasing the representation of women in AI-related fields and ensuring diverse perspectives are considered during the design and testing phases. Additionally, companies should actively work towards eliminating gender biases in AI algorithms and regularly assess their impact on different demographic groups. In conclusion, although men currently dominate the labor market, women bear a disproportionate burden due to the adoption of generative AI. The combination of industry composition, gender biases in algorithms, and lack of diversity in AI development contribute to this disparity. To relieve these effects, it is essential to prioritize diversity and inclusion in AI development and address gender biases in algorithms. Only through these efforts can we ensure that the benefits of AI are distributed equitably among all individuals, regardless of gender. 28. Why are women in the US workforce more influenced by the adoption of generative AI than men? A. Women are less adaptable to technological changes. B. Women have a lower level of education compared to men. C. Women are generally less skilled in technology and AI-related fields. D. Women are more likely to work in industries that are highly automatable. 29. Which of the following strategies can reduce the potential negative impact on women? A. Increasing gender proportion in AI development teams. B. Providing targeted training and programs for women and giving them more chances in AI-related fields. C. Encouraging women to pursue careers in non-automatable industries. D. Offering financial supports to companies that prioritize gender diversity in AI programmes. 30. Why is it important to prioritize diversity and inclusion in AI development? A. It ensures equal opportunities for women in the workforce. B. It promotes innovation and creativity in AI solutions. C. It reduces the risk of biased algorithms that perpetuate gender inequalities. D. It improves the overall performance and effectiveness of AI systems. 31. What is the main idea of the article? A. The impact of AI on job losses in the US. B. The role of women in AI-related fields. C. Gender biases in AI algorithms and their effects on women. D. Solutions to address challenges faced by women due to generative AI. D 29. B 30. C 31. 根据第二段中“Women are more likely to work in industries that are highly be influenced by automation, such as retail, hospitality, and administrative support. (女性更有可能在受自动化影响较大的行业工作,如零售、酒店和行政支持。)”和“Consequently, women employed in these industries face a higher risk of job displacement. 根据第四段中“As a result, AI systems may not fully understand or cater to the needs of women, continuously leading to gender inequalities. (因此,人工智能系统可能无法完全理解或满足女性的需求,从而不断导致性别不平等。)”和最后一段中“To relieve these effects, it is essential to prioritize diversity and inclusion in AI development and address gender biases in algorithms. Only through these efforts can we ensure that the benefits of AI are distributed equitably among all individuals, regardless of gender. D People vary in how well they discriminate and identify foods. The variation is explained by a general ability to recognize objects. We researchers originally theorized the variability might also be associated with people’s attitude toward new foods. Those who endorse statements like “I am particular about what I eat” have food neophobia — refusal of food novelty. Sure enough, our study did find picky eaters scored worst on our tests of food recognition: Food neophobia is negatively correlated with food recognition ability. While we were publishing our finding, scientists were debating new findings about how the brain reacts to food and color. Different research groups had identified brain areas in the visual system that responded preferentially to images of food. For instance, looking at a bowl of noodles would activate these brain areas, but not looking at a pile of string. The scientific disagreement was about what it meant to identify a selectivity for food in brain areas already known for their responsiveness to color. We repeated our initial study with gray-scale images of food. The result showed without color, people unsurprisingly made more errors, mistaking different dishes as the same, but the pattern of variation across people was otherwise unchanged. Those with a higher general visual ability did better with food. We also found one effect of removing color: Food neophobia was no longer correlated with food recognition ability. It was as if whatever advantage the adventurous eaters had gained over picky ones was all dependent on color. We then made an entirely new prediction: Would people with color blindness be less food neophobic than those with normal color perception? Because the colorblind experience food in a restricted range of color, certain signals that raise flags about freshness, safety, or otherwise drive anxiety about novel food could be limited. We invited participants online, based on how they answered one question about color blindness buried in a long screening questionnaire. The survey suggested colorblind people were indeed less food neophobic than the non-colorblind. Seeing the world with a narrow color range seems to ease an emotion-based resistance to novel foods. Our findings pave the way for addressing extreme cases of food neophobia. As researchers learn more about the complicated relevance between color perception and food, we might develop targeted interventions to improve dietary habits. 32. What does the underlined word “endorse” mean in paragraph 1? A. Comment on. B. Approve of. C. Worry about. D. Argue against. 33. What’s the purpose of writing paragraph 2? A. To illustrate an argument. B. To emphasize the value of science. C. To explain the background of later tests. D. To indicate a positive academic atmosphere. 34. Why are colorblind people less food neophobic according to the study? A. They’re born with a bigger appetite. B. They’re more expert at recognizing food. C. They prefer to take risks and try fresh things. D. They fail to perceive some food signs causing tension. 35. How did the author uncover the effect of color on emotional responses to food? A. By experiencing food diversity firsthand. B. By analyzing feedback from respondents. C. By testing brains’ reaction to colorful foods. D. By monitoring picky eaters’ dietary variations. B 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第一段的“Those who endorse statements like “I am particular about what I eat” have food neophobia — refusal of food novelty. (那些endorse“我对自己吃的东西很挑剔”的人有“新食物恐惧症”——拒绝新奇食物。)”可知,“Those…have food neophobia”这里指那些人有“新食物恐惧症”说明他们支持“I am particular about what I eat”这一观点,划线词意为“赞成、同意”。 根据第二段的“While we were publishing our finding, scientists were debating new findings about how the brain reacts to food and color. Different research groups had identified brain areas in the visual system that responded preferentially to images of food. 根据倒数第三段的“Because the colorblind experience food in a restricted range of color, certain signals that raise flags about freshness, safety, or otherwise drive anxiety about novel food could be limited. (因为色盲者体验食物的颜色范围有限,某些关于新鲜度、安全性或引起对新奇食物焦虑的信号可能会受到限制。)”和倒数第二段的“The survey suggested colorblind people were indeed less food neophobic than the non-colorblind.(调查显示,色盲者确实比非色盲者更不害怕食物。)” 根据第三段的“We repeated our initial study with gray-scale images of food. (运用了as引导的时间状语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Next to our house lived an old couple, who, accustomed to country life, were unwilling to move to the city to live with their son and stuck in a lonely existence for many years. It seemed that they didn’t feel like making any new connections with others, including their next-door neighbours. The neighborhood kids nicknamed the strange old couple Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. Rumor (流言,传言) was that they sat inside and drank tea all day. The only words we ever heard from them were “Keep out of our rosebushes!” The rosebushes crawled along the fence. Or rather, they served as a fence between our house and theirs, overgrowing the support. I was eleven at the time and the oldest of our family girls. A suitable playing court was a headache problem for us when we felt like playing softball games, which was our favourite sport then. We should have played our softball games elsewhere to avoid hurting the roses, but we secretly enjoyed annoying Crazy Jack and Ruby Rednose. One day, we had a softball game in our yard. Mary was trying to catch a fly ball. She stumbled (绊倒) over one of Ruby Rednose’s rosebushes and fell on top of several more. Just at that moment, Ruby Rednose sprang out and ran toward Mary. She screamed angrily, “Look at what you’ve doneto our family’s roses! You’ve always been a trouble. You have no idea what this rosebush means to me!” Hearing this, my sisters and I ran into our house. Breathlessly, we told Mom what had happened. “Girls, I have told you not to play softball near those bushes. Come outside right now and help me fix them.” “Mom, we thought you didn’t like the couple,” we protested. “They’re mean to us.” Mom just glared at us. We followed her outside to help repair the rose fence. While Mom was examining the damaged roses, Ruby slowly walked out. She looked sad. And it wasn’t her nose that was red, but her eyes. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150字左右。2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Ruby walked over to my mother, we girls holding our breath. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Ruby walked over to my mother, we girls holding our breath. We waited to see who would shout first and what terrible things would be said. “We are sorry about the flowers. The girls will fix them and help weed the roses.” said Mom. My sisters and I looked at each other in horror, but Ruby smiled through her tears. “I know we’re particular about these roses, but they’re very special because they remind me of my mother.” Soon both women were down on their knees examining the damaged bushes together. A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. My mother and Ruby worked together on the roses all summer and many summers to follow. So did my sisters and I. A friendship was formed between the families. Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. And the rose fence wasn’t a fence any longer. My mother had turned it into a bridge. 查看:examine/check/inspect ②.(关系)形成:form/build ③.把……变成:turn sth into/change sth into 情绪类 ①.抱歉的:sorry/apologetic ②.害怕:horror/fright 【点睛】[高分句型1] Ruby became part of our family, spending many happy hours at our house, especially during countless birthdays, graduations and weddings. B In Hindman, Kentucky, a group of women, known as the “book women”, usually set off on horseback at dawn, to pick their way along snowy hillsides and through muddy streams with a simple goal: to deliver reading materials to remote mountain communities. C Recent research reveals that the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by companies in the US has a disproportionate impact on women. AI systems are trained on historical data, which may reflect existing gender biases in hiring and promotion practices. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 In some workplaces like Myosin Marketing in Austin, Texas, an unusual activity takes place at the start of group employee meetings. ____36____ At first, employees thought it was strange, but later they found it beneficial as it helped them relax. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Ruby walked over to my mother we girls holding our breath. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: A few weeks later, the plants all came back to life. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
