①Do you ride a bicycle or take other forms of transportation to travel around your city? Do you carry things to the town far away on your bicycle?
②Not many people get the chance to ride in the Tour de France, but people all over the world ride bicycles. Bicycles are so common that we often take them for granted. In the Netherlands, people of all ages and lifestyles ride bicycles instead of using other types of transportation. Along any bike path, you’ll see businessmen with their briefcases, mothers with small babies, and elderly grandmothers bicycling home after food shopping. In Southeast Asia, goods are often transported from place to place on bicycles. High piles of boxes are taken by bicycle from one town to a nearby one. In India and Indonesia, bicycle rickshaws (人力车) are used instead of taxis. It is cheaper to use bicycles than other forms of transportation, and it’s better for the environment, too, since bicycles create no air pollution.
③In other countries, people ride bicycles mostly for recreation (娱乐), as a hobby or sport. Recreational cycling is made up of several different types of activities. Touring Cyclists ride bicycles for long distances, often in places with beautiful scenery. They carry everything they need with them in small bags that hang from their bicycles. They consider their route and bring equipment, clothing, and everything needed for repairs if they are planning to travel far. They can’t depend on finding a garage or repair shop to fix problems. Although they travel with all their equipment, their bicycles are quite light, so they don’t have to use a lot of energy to ride them.
④In recent years, mountain bikes have become popular. Cyclists use these bicycles off roads on rough dirt tracks to go up and down hills and mountains. Mountain bikes have to be strong to stand a chance in these environments. They have larger tires, many gears, and more powerful brakes to help cyclists ride up and down safely. After riding hard to get to the top of a hill, cyclists can use the opportunity in the downhill sections to relax.
⑤So next time, when you have a chance to use a bicycle, what do you want to use it for?
34. How does the writer describe paragraph 2 about bicycle riding?
A. By giving examples. B. By using pictures. C. By listing numbers. D. By telling stories.

A. ride bicycles for recreation B. need lots of energy to ride bicycles
C. can relax anytime at any place D. ride on rough roads and enjoy the beautiful scenery
36. The three underlined words in paragraph 4 probably refer to “________”.
A. instruments B. bike parts C. equipment D. machines
37. What is the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
C
①I recently visited my friend Lydia and saw her new puppy. The energetic dog was really cute! Lydia smiled as she told me about his first days at home. It was truly “puppy love”.
②Later that day, as I helped my dog Skyler climb the stairs, I thought about how you didn’t consider this level of extra care when you brought home a furry (毛茸茸的) new family member. But that is often what that “puppy love” turns into.
③When we got Skyler, my husband and I had only been married for a few years. She was house-trained in no time. At home, she always needed to be behind someone. We took her on hikes, and we were amazed by her energy. If we took off running toward the end of a field, she would have already crossed the finish line before we had even made it halfway.
④Now, at the age of 14, Skyler still needs to be right beside you on the sofa or to follow you into the next room. On walks, whenever we turn the corner onto our street, she pulls hard on her leash (皮带) to race toward home. She has made us laugh endlesely and has comforted me countless times.
⑤But it is hard. It is sad to see this once-strong dog have a difficult time walking up the front steps. Over the past few years, we have had to give up on taking certain family trips because we wouldn’t have been able to take good care of Skyler. My husband spends hours each week making special food for her that helps to control her kidney (肾脏) problems. And I always have to sit in the back of the car whenever she travels with us because Skyler needs help getting comfortable, even though I may get carsick as a result.
⑥Though I sometimes complain about old Skyler, I know she has taught me about love. Dogs give us unconditional love. The least we can do is give it back.
⑦My friend Lydia may not be thinking about this. But if she were I would tell her that ________.
38. The underlined sentences in paragraph 3 mainly show Skyler is very ________.
A. smart B. cute C. energetic D. special
39. What is the correct order of the following activities?
a. I visited Lydia and met her new puppy dog.
b. I got Skyler a few years after my husband and I got married.
c. I helped Skyler to climb the stairs later that day.
d. I took care of Skyler in the back car to make her comfortable when traveling.
A. a--c--b--d B. c--b--a--d C. b--d--a--c D. d—b—c--a
40. What does the writer mainly want to tell us in paragraphs 5~6?
A. She complains about Skyler as she is old.
B. It’s very sad to see Skyler have some physical health.
C. She and her husband give up taking Skyler to travel.
D. She and her husband keep giving Skyler extra care and love although it’s not easy.
41. Which of the following can be put into ________ in the last paragraph?
A. she should give her puppy special food every week
B. she should show her love just when her puppy was young
C. “Puppy love” would grow and that it was lucky for her to have her dog in her life
D. The love for the dog would die down and she would be sad to lose her puppy in the end
D
Henderson Island, an uninhabited (无人居住的) member of the Cocos Islands—a horseshoe (马蹄形) chain of 26 small islands 2, 100 km north-west of Australia—should be a paradise (天堂) island that people would never want to leave.
Its sandy beaches, tropical trees and crystal; blue waters are the perfect elements (元素) needed to create a dream setting. However, due to human pollution, the island is now home to over 40 million pieces of plastic!
The 18 tonnes (公吨) of waste that have washed ashore (向岸上) is almost all plastic, with up to two-thirds of it buried deep under the sands. Worse still, it is estimated that up to 13,000 new items are washing onto the shores every day.
Dr Jennifer Lavers, of the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine (海洋的) and Antarctic Studies, spoke to reporters, explaining, “I’ve travelled to some of the most far-flung islands in the world. Regardless of where I’ve gone, in what year, and in what area of the ocean, the story is generally the same: the beaches are littered with evidence (证据) of human activity.”
However, my thought was that the remoteness (偏僻) of Henderson Island would have afforded it some protection. I was totally wrong. The quantity (数量) left me speechless and that’s why I went to such pains to document it in such detail.
No country got a free pass on this—we found bottles from Germany, containers from Canada and, I think, a fishing pole from New Zealand. What that says is we all have a responsibility in this, and we have to sit up and pay attention.
When Dr Lavers began investigating (调查) the surrounding islands, she was met with even more mind-blowing levels of pollution.
In fact, her team of scientists studying the pollution calculated that the islands are littered with 238 tonnes of plastic and estimate that over 370 million pieces of it lies buried under sand.
Dr Lavers went on to warn, “For me, marine plastic pollution is the new climate change, but I would like for us to not make the same mistakes. We’ve been arguing about climate change, and whether it exists and what is changing, for the better part of 40 years. Let’s not wait for more science. Let’s not debate (争论) it. The number of plastic in our oceans is absolutely phenomenal (惊人的), and we need to do something... now!”
42. According to Dr Jennifer Lavers, we learn that ________.
A. the island is still a dream place to live
B. only some countries are responsible for the plastic problem
C. there’s the leftover of human activities everywhere
D. protection in some remote areas has been done to improve the situation
43. The purpose of the text is to ________.
A. introduce Henderson Island to the visitors
B. ask readers to have marine and Antarctic studies
C. ask scientists to stop studying the climate change
D. urge people to care for the plastic pollution on the islands right now
44. Dr Jennifer Lavers expresses her ideas in a sense of ________.
A. pain and anxiety B. happiness and hope C. excitement and anger D. surprise and sadness
45. What is the best title of the passage?
A A Journey of a Scientist. B. Plastic Pollutes Paradise.
C. Human Activities on Henderson Islands. D. Henderson Islands—a Fascinating place.

I’m very happy to share our plan for the project of my hometown on behalf of my group.
To begin with, we need to prepare a camera so that we can take photos or videos of the village. We also need a notebook to write down whatever we think or feel about.
During the project, we’ll interview some of the villagers or fishermen about their daily life and record their moments of talking. At the same time, we’ll take lots of photos about the local culture such as food, folk activities, houses, streets and so on. We think these must be a fascinating visual feast. In addition, we’ll search the information about the village on the Internet to learn more about it. Finally, we’ll make a short video or a guidebook to introduce our village.
This is our plan for the project. Could you give us more advice?
