You mustn't walk through moving water.Do not touch any electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water. 写作专项提能 ■写作项目——Continue a story about a flood 本单元的写作任务为读后续写。 It had been raining non-stop for three days. 地点 In their house 人物 Mary, Mum, Dad 情节 The city Mary and her parents lived in was flooded. They were trapped at home, not sure what to do. Mary looked through the windows at the endless rain. (nervous)→Mary wanted to leave the house but her parents refused. (scared)→Mary walked to the door to see how much water there was outside. (curious) →Her parents stopped her and tried to comfort her. 以本文为例: 伏笔1 第一段中的“the endless rain” “had been raining non-stop for three days”及最后一段中“make the wind and rain more frightening”预示着外面的情况很糟糕,且接下来雨势会增强,续写时应有对这一方面的描写以及由此带来的危险或困难。 伏笔2 第一段中的“were downstairs in the living room”及“Dad was listening to a weather report on the radio, while Mum was putting their important documents and disaster supplies into a bag.”提示了续写逃生情节时会用到的三个关键词“downstairs(洪水中为了安全会去楼上)”“radio(可以接收外界信息)”及“disaster supplies(在灾难中受困时的依仗)”。 伏笔4 倒数第二段中提到“Dad moved the dinner table against the door, in case the floodwater forced the door open”,续写中可呼应此处描写洪水破门而入的场面,凸显场景的紧急状态,将情节推向高潮。 2.场景描写 本文中的“the endless rain outside” “It had been raining non-stop for three days.”描写了大雨持续不停的场景,给整篇文章奠定了紧张不安的基调;“The wind roared and the rain beat on the roof and windows.”则进一步突出了环境的恶劣,加深了这种不安的氛围;“The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside.” 3.动作描写 在“Without saying a single word, Dad walked to the sofa, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter.” 4.心理描写 文中的“It was making her nervous.”写出了Mary的紧张不安;“She was curious to see how much water there was outside.”中的be curious则描写了她对暴雨具体情况的好奇;“Her voice was calm, but Mary could tell she was worried too.” 1.What happened then? Now we need to go upstairs and wait there until the rescue comes.” Dad said calmly, and rushed to carry the bag containing important documents and disaster supplies. Mom held Mary's hand tightly and quickly headed up the stairs. 1.Encountering a tornado Although I didn't dare to look, I could feel the tornado getting closer as hail started to fall, hitting the old boat hard. Chased by the terrible nightmare, I couldn't afford to let up for a moment. I didn't even wipe the sweat away as it streamed in my eyes and blurred my view. Finally, Grandma's house appeared before my eyes. We jumped out of the boat and ran towards it. Being complete breathless, we buzzed the doorbell again and again. Grandma opened the door for us, and we followed her into the basement. We stayed down there, waiting for the tornado to pass over us. 2.Encountering a hurricane We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel. Around nine o'clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off. Soon came an indoor rainstorm. I had never felt so scared. My little brother began to cry and my mother held him tightly. We spent a terrible night in the heavy rain and wind. The next morning, it started to clear up. Thankfully, my family came safely through the storm, though the same could not be said for the house. 3.Encountering a flood As I fell asleep, I was awakened by the sound of rushing water. When I swung my legs off the bed, I was shocked to feel cold water already up to my knees and rising fast. Trembling, I grabbed my phone on the table and switched on the flashlight. Water was coming from the garden door. The nearby river must have violently burst its banks. And now I had to get out — fast! With the water up to my waist, in bare feet I started to paddle to my only escape — the door leading to the outdoors. 1.A severe earthquake destroyed almost everything, and left badly damaged buildings.(用现在分词短语作状语升级) → A severe earthquake destroyed almost everything, leaving badly damaged buildings. When the soldiers began to clear the debris (废墟), my uncle led me away.“They have taken the bodies to the river bank,” he said gently.“Come, you must perform the last rites (仪式) to the dead before sunset.Tomorrow, we will go back to the town.” I had last seen my family while leaving for the town. They stood at the doorway and waved, John and Jane. That is the way I will always remember them — smiling and waving at me. “Jane? She was not at the river bank. They have not found her,” my uncle said.“She is dead ...” “But we must find her,” I shouted.I ran back to the village, to the spot where my house had stood, searching, crying, searching on my knees ... “Boy, it is no use!” a voice said.I looked up.The speaker was the Army officer in charge of the relief operation.“Whom are you looking for?” “My sister,” I said, fighting to control my tears. He looked dirty and exhausted as if he had not slept for days.“My men have been on their feet for days,” he said softly.“They have done all they could here.Tomorrow, at daybreak, we go to another village just like this, then another ...” Ten minutes later, the officer was back. Ten minutes later, the officer was back. With him were three soldiers armed with spades and some other search equipment.Without a word, the men began removing the debris. It being completely dark, someone brought a few lit lamps. Two hours later, a soldier called out, “Stop!” He stood in the middle of a small hole. The wall had caved in at that spot.I recognized a part of a door.Beneath it, a small foot. Excitedly, the soldiers began to clear the hole. Then, the door was lifted.“She is alive!” someone said. What a miracle! Cheers went up as she was wrapped in a warm blanket and carried to the tent where a temporary hospital had been set up. [阅读拓展训练] Can you survive an unannounced storm?Although there is expert broadcasting and we are equipped with cellphones, there're still some instances when the violent weather takes us by surprise. While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warning, sudden Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico hurricanes form and move rapidly in less than a day's time, endangering everyone and everything in their path. There have been oil workers trapped off the shore when sudden storms appeared.Field archeologists have been stuck in coastal areas without storm warning. It wasn't but a few decades ago that a Texas National Guard group was trapped on the beach by rain-forced flooding and had to ride out a major hurricane during a training exercise. There have been a few instances when travelers were trapped on an island or in a coastal area and unable to escape in time. Escaping from the storm-threatened areas is generally a choice for most of us — but not for all. Each year thousands of islanders across the Caribbean face the danger of hurricanes without so much as a public shelter to hide in.Most ride out the storm in their homes. But there're a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies.Being prepared for the unexpected may be your best and only defense. If you're headed to the great outdoors for a few days or weeks, you should always carry a flashlight (手电筒) with extra batteries, a navigation device (装置), and a basic medical box.If you're traveling in your car, remember you may suffer from high winds. You'd better not stay inside to avoid being blown away along with your car.Keeping your head and your courage up is essential to survival in any type of danger.Let common sense guide you and always be prepared for the worst. 1.According to the text, most Atlantic hurricanes .
