Kaylie and I had been good friends since Grade 1. Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. And the more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were. We both liked baking extra-creative cookies, we both had awesome (and sometimes annoying) younger siblings, and we both have the same favorite song and even animal — dolphin.
Last summer, we went to the Arts and Crafts Fair in our park. There were so many things to see. We didn’t know where to begin. We had fun walking around the rows and rows of art booths, clothing racks and kick knack tables. I found the best polka-dot hat, but it cost too much. Kaylie fell in love with a yo-yo, but she looked at the price tag, and yup — it cost too much! To tell you the truth, we were starting to get discouraged. Just as we were about to give up on finding anything we could afford, we came to a table with gobs of gorgeous bracelets (手链). “These are so cool,” I said, picking up one with moons and stars. “And look, they’re in my price range!”
“Please try anything on. The beads (珠子) come from Thailand, and I string each bracelet with love. My name is Tex,” the jeweler said with a friendly smile. Then at the same moment, we both saw it! A bracelet with colorful beads shone brightly in the light, including two pink beads in the shape of dolphin, which added a playful touch to the design. It was the only bracelet like it on the table. Reaching for the bracelet together, we asked Tex if he possibly had any more dolphin bracelets just like this. To our disappointment, that was the last one.

Staring at the bracelet, both of us were hesitant. The sunlight hit the colorful beads, making them glisten even more brightly, as if tempting us further. Kaylie's hand hovered over the bracelet, her fingers twitching slightly, eager to grasp it yet held back by her kindness. I bit my lip, my heart pounding in my chest. “You know how much I love dolphins,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “But I know you do too,” Kaylie replied, her eyes locked with mine. We stood there, frozen in that moment, the bustling noise of the fair fading into the background. The bracelet seemed to be a symbol of our friendship, yet also a source of this unexpected conflict.
When we both looked at the two dolphin beads in the bracelet, our eyes lit up. A brilliant idea dawned on us simultaneously. “What if we split the bracelet?” I exclaimed, my face beaming with excitement. Kaylie's eyes sparkled as she nodded vigorously. We rushed to Tex, explaining our plan. Tex smiled warmly and got to work. He carefully removed the dolphin beads and restrung them into two separate bracelets, adding some extra small beads for a finishing touch. As we received our new bracelets, we couldn't stop smiling. From that day on, whenever we wore our bracelets, whether it was at school or during our adventures, we were reminded of our unbreakable friendship and the wonderful solution we had found together.
Staring at the bracelet, both of us were hesitant. Kaylie's eyes were fixed on the dolphin beads, a look of longing in them. I shuffled my feet nervously, my mind racing. “I really want this bracelet,” I admitted, feeling a bit guilty. “I do too,” Kaylie said, sighing. We both knew that choosing one of us to have it would be unfair. The other bracelets on the table paled in comparison. The fair around us was alive with activity, but we were lost in our own little world of indecision. The bracelet seemed to be mocking our friendship, testing our bond. We exchanged glances, neither of us wanting to make the first move.
When we both looked at the two dolphin beads in the bracelet, our eyes lit up. An ingenious thought popped into our heads at the same time. “Let's share it!” Kaylie shouted. I grinned from ear to ear. We immediately told Tex our plan. Tex was impressed by our idea and set about separating the bracelet. He worked with precision, carefully detaching the dolphin beads and creating two unique pieces. As he handed us our new bracelets, we were overjoyed. From then on, every time we caught sight of our bracelets, we were reminded of that special day at the fair and how our friendship had overcome a small obstacle with a big, creative solution.
Staring at the bracelet, both of us were hesitant. Obviously, neither of us could bear to put it down because the bracelet was so delicate. After all, it was a dolphin bracelet — just our favourite! However, seeing the eagerness in Kaylie’s eyes, I whispered, “It should be yours; it matches your style perfectly.” She shook her head, insisting that I should have it since it was I who found it first. Meanwhile, torn between the two of us, Tex was completely at a loss what to do, standing there helplessly.
When we both looked at the two dolphin beads in the bracelet, our eyes lit up. “What if we split the two dolphin beads and each make our own bracelet?” we exclaimed, excitement bubbling. Tex felt relieved, quickly removed a dolphin bead, picked out colorful beads to match it and strung them onto another bracelet. When he handed us our new bracelets, we grinned, realizing it didn’t matter who would wear it; what mattered was our friendship and the joy we found in sharing this special moment. From then on, Kaylie and I shared one more thing — a dolphin bracelet!
