Sanchez stopped excitedly on her way to observe a bird on a shaking branch call its distinctive sound and then fly away. “It's a nice clear day with little wind," she said. “The birds are much more active when there isn't a lot of wind."
Sanchez is a Golden Gate Bird Alliance (GGBA) member. In 2023, she was a scholar of GGBA Birding for Everyone and returned to the program in 2024 to serve as the fellowship adviser.
Many people pour into birding because they love birds' beautiful feathers, their complicated songs, or their entertaining antics(滑稽可笑的举止).For Sanchez,it was serendipity. During her bachelor's degree in biology, she needed one more class to graduate and the only one available was ornithology. “Before that, I wasn't really into birds,” SÃnchez reflected. “They were just there and I didn't bat an eye whenever I saw a crow or anything else. ” But she needed to graduate, so she signed up. Learning about bird biology and how to interpret their behavior allowed Sanchez to start seeing birds as unique individuals with rich lives and personalities.“The lab part of this class was basically field trips to go birding," she said, “and I fell in love with it. " She also fell in love with the birding community she's now helping to build through involvement with groups like GGBA.“Nice as it is to go out on your own birding trips, sometimes you'd like some company," she said. “And sometimes you'd like to share with someone who gets it, how cool it is that you saw a bird around. ”
For Sanchez, birding is a way to relax and escape the busyness and stress of daily life. Slowing down to notice birds and getting to know them give her a new lens(透镜)through which to see the world. “I know better what's around me, which makes me more appreciative," she said.
24. What can be known from the first paragraph?
A. Sánchez is an expert on climate. B. The weather affects birds' activities.
C. Sánchez was on a business trip. D.The wind protects birds from attack.
25. Which of the following has the closest meaning to the underlined word “serendipity” in Paragraph 3?
A.Chance. B. Interest, C.Responsibility. D. Investment.
26. What made Sanchez develop an interest in birds?
A. Her curiosity about nature. B. A birding trip with friends.
C. Her desire to interpret birds. D. A required class in university.
27.How does birding benefit Sanchez?
A. It helps her make more friends. B. It gives her a sense of achievement.
C. It frees her from her daily pressure. D. It allows her to adapt to the real world.

There are about 537 million people living with diabetes(糖尿病)today. It's predicted that by 2045, 700 million people will have the disease worldwide. Type l and type 2 diabetes are both conditions that affect how the body regulates blood sugar, but they have different causes and treatments. In type 1.diabetes, the body produces little or no insulin(胰岛素).This means that patients have to obtain insulin externally to regulate their blood sugar levels. Nowadays, this is mostly done via insulin pumps that are attached directly to the body. These biomedical devices require a reliable energy supply, which at present is met primarily by power from either single-use or rechargeable batteries.
Now, a team of researchers led by Martin Fussenegger have put a new idea into practice. They developed an implantable fuel cell that uses excess blood sugar from tissue to generate electrical energy. They combined the fuel cell with Artificial Beta Cells (ABCs) developed by their group years ago. These help produce insulin at the touch of a button and effectively lower blood sugar levels much like their natural role models in the pancreas(胰腺).
“Many people, especially in the Western industrialized nations, consume more carbohydrates(碳水化合物)than they need in everyday life," Fussenegger explains. This leads diseases such as diabetes, fatness, etc.“This gave us the idea of using this excess energy to produce electricity to power these devices," he says.
The system combines sustained power generation and controlled insulin delivery. Once the fuel cell indicates excess sugar, it starts to generate power. This electrical energyis then used to stimulate ABCs to produce and release insulin into the blood. As a result, blood sugar drops stops. to a normal level. Once it falls below a certain level, the production of electricity and insulin The electrical energy provided by the fuel cell can also enable the implanted system to communicate with external devices. This allows potential users to adjust the system via a certain app. A doctor could also access it remotely and make adjustments. “
The new system could be used to treat diabetes. However, bringing such a device to the market is far beyond our financial and human resources. So there is still a long way to go," Fussenegger says.
28. What do the team of researchers aim to do?
A. To find an alternative power source for biomedical devices.
B. To make a kind of effective insulin for diabetes sufferers.
C. To work out a way to prevent the spread of diabetes.
D. To investigate the exact cause of type 1 diabetes.
29.(易错题)What does Fussenegger want to tell us in Paragraph 3?
A. Why people in the industrialized nations enjoy carbohydrates.
B. What inspired his team to develop the invention.
C. What can easily result in diabetes and fatness.
D.Why ABCs can function effectively.
30. What is special about the new system?
A. It is powered by an artificial pancreas.
B. It requires doctors' real-time monitoring.
C. It constantly releases insulin in the blood.
D. It can automatically adjust blood sugar levels.

Floating solar panels could supply some electricity needs of the world, new research has shown. The study, by the researchers from Bangor University,Lancaster University and the UK Centre for Ecology &Hydrology, aimed to calculate the global potential for deploying(部署) low-carbon floating solar arrays. The researchers calculated the daily electrical output of the floating solar panels on nearly 68,000 lakes and reservoirs(水库)around the world, using available climate data of each location.
The researchers' calculations included lakes and reservoirs where floating solar panels are most likely to be installed. They are no more than 10 km from a population centre; they are not in a protected area; they don't dry up and don't freeze for more than six months each year. They estimated the potential output by assuming that the floating solar panels would cover up to 10% of the surface area of these water bodies, with a maximum coverage area of 30 km2.
While output varied depending on altitude, latitude and season, the potential annual electricity generation from the floating solar panels on these lakes was 1,302 terawatt hours(TWh), around four times the total annual electricity demand of the UK.
Floating solar panels have a number of additional advantages over land-based solar installations: They free up land for other uses and they keep panels cooler, making them more efficient. There is some evidence for other environmental benefits, including reducing water loss blooms by limiting light.
However, the researchers warn that further research is needed on the overall environmental impact of floating solar panels. They suggest that decisions to deploy floating solar panels should consider the intended function of water bodies and how they are used, as well as the potential ecological impact. Lead author of the paper, Dr lestyn Woolway of Bangor University, said, “We still don't know exactly how floating panels might affect the ecosystem within a natural lake, in different conditions and locations.”

I disliked Del. He never used my real name “Jenny". Instead, he always called me“Germy”, which meant “dirty". Besides, he was a very naughty boy at school. So when Mr. Smith, the head teacher, asked him to come to his office one day, I naturally thought that Del had done something wrong. A few minutes later, Del returned to the classroom and seemed heartbroken. He took his schoolbag and left, without saying anything. He did not return to class that day and the next day. All of us kept wondering what had happened to him.
“What did he do?”one of my friends asked me.
“He must have hit a little boy and was sent home by the head teacher,” I whispered to my friends. “A moment ago, I saw a little boy crying outside while Del was talking to him."
Immediately, the whole class was talking about Del being kicked out of school for beating up a kid. I was shocked that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom a few days later, the kids sitting next to him tried their best to avoid him.
“What's the problem?” Del asked.
“I don't want you to beat me," oneof the kids said.“Yeah, I might," said Del.
I could tell Del was joking, but many kidsthought he admitted he did beat up someone. During the breaks, when Del tried to join the games, the players just declined
“Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always played with you guys.
They just ignored him and went on playing. Del sighed and sat by himself while the others were enjoying themselves. Del looked very lonely and sad, much different from what he had been. I started to feel sorry for what I did to him.
I felt even worse for what I said after I learned what really happened. The boy was Del's younger brother and he was crying that day because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. So I decided to do something to stop the rumor(谣言).

One possible version:
The next day, Del was left alone during the break, again. So I walked slowly toward him. At the sight of me, he looked a bit puzzled. Daring not to look into his eyes, I apologized and explained how my assumptions had turned into such a terrible rumor. “I'm sorry, too," Del hung his head in shame and said in a low voice. “I wasn't very nice to you, either. I know you spread the rumor just because of my bad behavior. I think I have earned it. ”
After we apologized to each other, I decided to do more. I walked Del toward our classmates and called for their attention. Everyone stopped in surprise. I told them that Del didn't beat up anyone and that I just made up the whole story because I hated being called“Germy”. On hearing that funny name, all of them laughed, in good nature. “All right! Can Germy... Jenny... and I join your play now?” Del glanced at me shyly.
