advised to be careful1a heat wave hits much of the country.
A heat wave is defined as a period of hot weather where temperatures are higher
than is expected for the time of year. They usually happen in summer.
However,climate change (long-term changes to weather patterns,mostly 2
(cause)by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, farming and cutting down
forests)is increasing the chance of heat waves happening and making them more
extreme. The current hot weather is even3(much)extreme in some European
countries--temperatures in southern Spain have reached 46'C.
Heat waves can be a danger to people's health, especially for vulnerable groups
such as the elderly, children and people 4 certain health conditions. However,
anyone 5 suffer from the effects of extreme heat, including dehydration (not

group of leading UK scientists 6(suggest)that,just as storms are given names,
we should name heat waves in order to raise awareness of the health risks.
The Met Office, the UK's national weather service, has issued an amber warning.
This means there is the possibility of travel delays, road and rail closures, power cuts
and a potential risk to people's health.Temperatures are expected 7(rise)to 35C,
and there have been predictions that the record for the UK's hottest day could be
broken.Government officials have met to discuss 8 to introduce a heat wave
emergency or not.
To cope with hot weather, the NHS (National Health Service)says people should
try to keep out of the Sun between 11 am and 3 pm,9 temperatures are at their
highest and the sun is strongest.Make sure you wear a hat, apply sunscreen and drink

Intentions Matter
When my daughter was very young, she broke my favorite cup.She was moving
it aside, and it slipped from her hand and broke on the floor.I loved that cup and was
really disappointed,but 21 I didn't punish her.It was an accident.She didn't
22to drop it.Intentions matter.Or do they?
I can't help but feel that our modern world does not 23intentions.We are all
so ready to find fault with another person and so concemed with our own responses
that we don't consider the 24of others.
There are25opportunities to be upset these days in the celebrity news cycle,
in politics and in our own interpersonal interactions.Every single day, someone is
torn apart on social media for something they have said or done.
A friend of mine says,"It's not how the message is intended;it's how it's
received."He means that we need to be 26 when choosing our words because
they can easily be 27 by the person we are addressing.
We all at times express ourselves poorly, make errors of judgment or have a
moment of 28 where we say the wrong thing. All of us have offended someone at
some point in our lives.
The internet is full of people seeking to make things worse.29 there are also
many decent people who30get things wrong or simply do not know better.
I get that there is much to be angry about. The world is full of injustice. The
actions and words of other people can cause harm;31,the actions and words of
other people matter.
But intention has to matter too,for us to make sense of the world, and for us to
affect changes.32 intentions can help us to feel better about our fellow humans.
When we appreciate intent,it can help to lessen the impact of their message.
On a more practical level, understanding intention can help us respond to people
with 33 instead of anger.People who wish to do the right thing are often willing
to listen. When we scream at people in anger,we 34communication and make
them less open to change.Remember, humans are 35 as divided as social media
suggests.

family recipe. He started selling jars of his jam door to door near his parents'home in
Edinburgh. As interest grew, his hobby stated to turn into a business. He now makes
40,000 jars of jam a month and is well on his way to making his first million.
Doherty, who has been chosen to represent Britain in the Global Students

if you don't understand why something works in a certain way you will decide to do it
differently.”
Emma Jones, founder of Enterprise Nation, the home business website, said that
young people were much more confident about using technology as a base for their
business than the ofder gemeration."Whole sectors that didn't exist ten years ago are

Eating out goes a long way back. The Romans had their pubs serving set meals
and cook shops called thermopolia selling hot ready-to-eat dishes. In the Middle Ages,
inns would provide buffets of cold meats or roasts to serve the many people who
didn't have kitchens. Before the revolution in France, there were plenty of places
where you could eat out but fine dining was something enjoyed merely by the
aristocracy in the comfort of their own homes.
In 18th-century France, while the aristocrats were enjoying food prepared by
personal chefs, cold winters and oppressive taxation had left most of the French
population unable to afford bread. When the starving masses finally took to the streets
of Paris in 1789,commonly known as the French Revolution, the aristocrats fled to
the countryside, leaving their chefs and their fine wines behind. Both found their way
to the cities'existing eateries and within a year,a host of new elegant restaurants with
extensive menus had been established.
“These restaurants were a microcosm(缩影)of the New France,.”says David
Gilks,a lecturer in Modern European History at the University of East Anglia."They
were the places where the nouveau riche, who had profited from the revolution, were
to be seen. There were still shortages of basic food stuffs in many parts of Paris but in
the nicer parts you would see people enjoying fine food in elegant surroundings."
In the 1760s the merchants of Paris developed a taste for light soups known as
"restoratives"or "restaurants",and dining halls where customers could sit at
individual tables and have them began popping up around the city.
The new post-revolutionary restaurants took their names from these and the new
class of French businessmen, booming in the early 19th century when Napoleon
decided that if people were enjoying food and drinks, they'd be unlikely to rebel again.
Citizens were granted the "freedom of pleasure"and restaurants began to compete
with each other. They were featured in travelogues and became tourist attractions in
their own right.
"Intended or not, restaurants can signpost both the decline and success of an
Empire,"says William Sitwell, author of The Restaurant:A History of Eating Out.
"The extraordinary advancement of the dining scene of ancient Pompeii was
indicative of the Roman Empire's vision breadth and booming. The dark restaurant
scene of the United Kingdom in the 1940s after World War II showed quite how the
horrors of conflict had damaged the country's food, culture and taste."
43.Which of the following is a consequence of the French Revolution?
A.Most personal chefs were left unemployed.
B.Eateries found their way to the countryside.
C.Fine dining no longer just belonged to the aristocrats.
D.There were almost no shortages of basic food stuffs in Paris.
44.What can be learned about the word"restaurant"from the passage?
A.It was coined by the nouveau riche.
B.It originally referred to a type of food.
C.It came into being after the French Revolution.
D.It was first defined as the"freedom of pleasure".
45.What can be inferred from William Sitwell's comments on restaurants?
A.They are symbols of transformation.
B.They are the result of development.
C.They lost their appeal to British people in the 1940s.
D.They made their first appearance in ancient Pompeii.
46.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The national vision of eating out.
B.The varying popularity of restaurants.

Discover How Trade Unions Have Shaped the Way People Work
If you are travelling by train this summer you may find this journey is affected by
the national rail strike.47This year lots of workers are taking strike action and
asking for better pay.Teachers, for example, are thinking about whether to go on
strike in the autumn.Strikes are usually organized by trade unions.Read on to find
out what trade unions are and how they have shaped the way people work.
What is a trade union?
It is an organization that looks after the rights of people who work in the same
industry,do a specific job or work at the same company. The National Union of Rail,
Maritime and Transport Workers(RMT)represents 80,000 transport workers, and the
National Education Union has more than 460,000 members who work in teaching.
Trade unions give their members a strong, group voice and support when dealing with
the companies they work for.48.There are trade unions for lots of professions
including actors,doctors,farmers,journalists,nurses and teachers.
How do trade unions achieve their aims?
49 If they can't agree, then union members can vote to take action, which
could include going on strike.A group of women who made car seat covers in
Dagenham,Esses, went on strike in 1968 because they were being paid less than men
for doing a similar job.It lasted four weeks and the factory had to stop making cars
because no-one else could make the seats.Eventually, the women got more money.
Does everyone agree with strike action?
No.Strikes can seriously disrupt daily life.A rail strike stops people getting to
school and work and a teacher strike could close schools. This year's national rail
strike is the biggest in the UK for 30 years, and the next strike day(27 July)is due
just before the Commonwealth Games starts in Birmingham,England. The
Government says this will harm the event but Mick Lynch of the RMT says the public
support the strike.50Greta Thunberg's School Strike for Climate, for example,
when she protested every Friday instead of going to school, grew into an international
movement.

main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words.Use your own words as far as

The Achievement Gap in the United States
The achievement gap in the United States refers to the observed, persistent
disparity (in measures of educational performance among subgroups of U.S.
students,especially groups defined by socio-economic status,race and gender.The
achievement gap can be observed on a variety of measures including standardized test
scores, grade point average, dropout rates, and college enrollment and completion
rates.
Research into the causes of the disparity in academic achievement between
students has been ongoing since 1966.Many experts argue that achievement gaps are
the result of more subtle environmental factors and "opportunity gaps"in the
resources available to poor versus wealthy children.
Home environments have a stronger impact on school achievement than in-school
factors,in part, because children spend more time outside of school than in school.
Studies have found that children in poverty whose parents provide engaging learning
environments at home do not start school with the same academic readiness gaps seen
among poor children generally.
In addition, the out-of-school factors influencing academic performance differ
significantly between children living in poverty and children from middle-income
households.Being raised in a low-income family,for example,often means having
fewer educational resources at home,in addition to poor health care and nutrition.
The achievement gap has become a focal point of education reform efforts by a
number of non-profit organizations and advocacy groups.Attempts to minimize the
achievement gap by improving equality of access to educational opportunities have
been numerous,such as multicultural education,finance equalization,and
interventions to improve school testing, teacher quality and responsibility.
